Circle Dock / Re: Circle Dock

Assuming that you are running the original version (ie the one currently available on this site), it doesn't install, so you cannot uninstall it. You can just delete it.

The one comment I'd make about price at this point is that people need a sense of stability and long term support if they are being asked to pay a higher price. The extended, unpredicted and unannounced, absences unfortunately don't give this impression. Neither does the loss of the old forum posts or announcing a price change and limited time offer that then apparently goes on forever.

I understand the need to replenish and the new features that have been added, but the price people will pay isn't just about the features on offer. Current users are very supportive, but that might not always be the case if you manage to extend your market (as should be possible) and especially if the price goes up. I appreciate your ethics and concerns about all your users, some of whom may have difficulty with higher prices but, at the same time, it won't be a going concern as a program if it doesn't make the money you need out of it.

Living Room / Re: The All New Kindle - ripoff!
« on: October 09, 2011, 06:28 PM »
Someone pointed out to me that the UK version included taxes and Amazon US ads taxes at checkout - but even so the state with the highest sales tax is California at 8.25% so even at the most expensive in the US it costs $118, still $21 cheaper than the UK market (and over $100 cheaper than SA).

That was the point of my previous post - the UK VAT is included BUT even taking that into account AND adding Californian Sales Tax (which is near double most states, and quite a few are zero rated) the UK version is still $21 more than the US version.

I don't see how shipping or import/export duty would have much bearing - the devices are probably all made in the far east and shipped directly to the sales area. Even if it was shipped to the UK from the US the sort of bulk Amazon ship and the margins that they can acheive with shippers would not amount to $21 per unit. Plus if they are exporting product they will be able to recoup the import duties.

I don't understand where you get a $21 difference. Take the VAT off the £89 and you get £74 which works out at about $115. $6 difference only. All figures approx. I've no idea whether there are differences in the import/excise duties into the US & Europe, but that price difference is so much smaller than we usually see and disappears if the £ goes down to $1.48.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« on: October 05, 2011, 02:13 AM »
It seems as though Trout doesn't know how to respond to a change in the audio output device. If headphones are in when I start Trout and then I unplug the headphones, no songs will play. It shows an "error" or "notification" symbol/icon in the playlist and skips to the next song, at which point it does the same thing, etc.

Same thing happens if headphones are unplugged when Trout starts and then get plugged in.

Basically, I have to restart Trout to get it to play songs if I change the audio output from speakers to headphones.

I find quite a few programs have the same feature. And I don't use usb headphones. It is something I take advantage of some times as well as being a minor inconvenience at others. Never tried to list which progs worked this way and which don't.

Does that do most of it?

In terms of devotion, blind faith, communal ecstasy and tithing it surely has to be Apple.

I'm getting a 404 from that link...
Same here; now replaced it with a better working link to a different site.
I tried looking at original again and got these:-

(It would be nice if they had a complete feature set table... I suppose that's too much to ask what the product does... sigh...)

This shows the feature differences between the versions, but it certainly isn't a complete feature set table - but does any software ever really have that?

Have to go along with everyone else that DNS is the only serious game in town for this sort of software. Not that surprising since they bought their main competitors, I suppose, though they were always the best.

I love listpro and used it a lot when I had a windows mobile. I kept looking for them to release an android version but there's never been any sign of them doing one so I've more or less given up using it. I've never seen anything similar that is just so simple to use but still powerful. I've ended up with mlo just to sync lists since I never liked any of the other alternatives I tried. Also works well as a way of getting my tdl lists onto the phone.

OneNote + Outlook + Jello Dashboard

I also use OneNote. I find it's useful for a completely different range of things than Evernote, but is also fairly ponderous and limited in many ways. I tend to use it only for research into complex areas. Its value is increased if you spend a lot of time working with its Office colleagues (I avoid Outlook like the plague wherever I can, and only use Word when necessary to edit or review other people's documents).

I have used Jello Dashboard in the past and it does make Outlook a little more tolerable. But I just didn't find it nice enough or good enough to make me want to use Outlook.

However, from what you say, I'm not sure that it is yet free of what I saw as the single greatest drawback to using it - namely, proprietary "lock-in" of your data to, and your dependence on, an offline service which you cannot control.

The data can be exported as one large or many separate notes. xml, mht or html.

And there's no dependence on the service any more than there is with any program resident on your computer.

Many people here abandoned evernote when it went 'cloud'.
Well, I don't know how long this feature has been there, but evernote can actually work offline.

I never abandoned it and there has always been a choice about whether you kept a notebook in the cloud version (a local version is always there anyway) or in an offline version. I do find the cloud ability very useful for a lot of things; not everything I have is confidential.

I don't have a google+  account (I don't use Facebook or twitter either)  but I can see that it's the first of these that I would use. Once I have friends etc with accounts to use it with.

My watch syncs by radio and is always correct . My phones sync with their networks and are always correct . My W7 computer syncs daily with the windows internet timeserver and is 8 minutes fast (& this doesn't change even if I do a manual update or change the timeserver   ).

I simply tell my tailor whenever I go in, "I need three suits, and I want to be the best dressed person in the room. Show me what I should get." He never disappoints. :)

If you're in three suits you'll certainly be the most dressed person in the room. ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera 11.5 Released
« on: July 04, 2011, 08:00 AM »
I am having this weird thing in Opera at the moment where the "delete" from shopping cart in amazon doesnt work. Needless to say it is annoying  :-\
I just change quantity to 0 & update. Always did that anyway, because I'm more often changing 2 to 1, having added a 2nd by mistake.

ending by the end of tomorrow,
after that you can only get a normal license, not a lifetime.

Not sure about that. Seems you can still get the lifetime license at the $39.95.
Website still says only available until July 1, but the buy link takes you to a page that says lifetime updates at the same price.
I assume this will change when Rob gets around to changing it.

Living Room / Re: Looking at Cameras
« on: July 01, 2011, 06:24 AM »
The Sony NEX-3 seems to have the best image quality/ high iso performance of any non-SLR camera, matching some SLRs which have much bigger sensors ... Also there's not much choice in lenses till next year. I guess that's why it's selling so cheaply..

You can get an adapter to allow you to use any A Mount lens. You get AF, but most A mount lenses don't have image stabilisation (A mount DSLRs have it in camera). Of course, the adapter itself isn't cheap. :(

Yeh. I've tried Compendium too. Could never think of a use for it that it was the best solution for.
Sort of opposite problem to that I have with IQ - plenty of possible uses for it and recognise that it might be efficient if I thought the way it does, but never see an easy way of doing what I want. And probably never will unless the failure of other tools forces me to try and adapt to its way of working. May need to have another look sometime.
Would take a lot more persuading/examples to make me try Compendium again.

1071
So basically everything he said doesn't apply to me. I'm not wasting my life if I don't have an SSD.
Well, seems to me you will probably be wasting some of it if you don't have one  :D; rather depends on how much of your life you have to spend to earn the money to buy & fit one & what else you would do with any time saved.

1072
Those of you who have made the jump - did you tweak windows so that the often written folders (cache, virtual memory files, temp folders, user folder) are on another drive or did you just install as normal?
I shifted these. As much to save the space as the write limitation.

General Software Discussion / Re: web clipping
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:28 PM »
The main reason I didn't respond to suggest Surfulater is that the O.P. seemed to be looking for something that would work well with Opera.  Surfulater used to be able to do so, thanks to some instructions in Surfulater's old forum.  However, as far as I can tell, those instructions no longer work with Opera 11.11 (the current version).  According to some messages in the Opera forum, the problem began with Opera 11.01.  It's a pity, because Surfulater is a terrific (though admittedly rather pricey) program.
I remember being interested in Surfulater before I bought UR (I seem to remember reports of UR capturing web pages more accurately) and have kept half an eye on it since. Never enough to buy it even on BdJ days. And I do already have quite a lot of ways of doing this, so there has to be a compelling reason to acquire another. Always open to compelling reasons though. Working with Opera might be one; although I cope OK with using other browsers when I'm acquiring info, it would be much more convenient to always do it in the one I am using.

1074
For instance, after dropping an indeterminate number of clips, every drop becomes one (1) particular clip.  Only thing I've found to cure that is to kill, then restart, URP.  But it shouldn't be happening, and it's likely something else running is interfering.  However, I can't afford the time to hunt that particular needle - it's a big haystack  :P.
Completely agree.
And UR is very complex. My own approach was like my normal approach to many even slightly complex programs - a few minutes here and there seeing what it does, reading the forum regularly etc over a long period of time before I decided I got it and it would do some aspect of what I wanted and started actually using it. Pretty much the complete opposite of your situation.

Even though they are selected in the View | Choose Columns (?) menu window.  That is, both Web site and URL are selected, but neither shows in the item attributes window.

I don't have either of those boxes clicked there  :(
What I do have it those attributes ticked in the menu - Tools>Attributes  :)
And I bring up the Attributes panel by the menu - View>Other Windows>Item Attributes (or just CTRL 4)  :) :)
CTRL 5 brings up the item notes (or otherwise just go through the same View menu)

And for some reason, the UR folk apparently don't believe that, even with screen shots  .  I don't doubt that the product is good, but it simply does not perform as advertised on my system.  My next step, when time allows, is to deinstall, reinstall, see if something went awry in the original install.  That seems more and more likely, as new [non] events occur  :o.

I do sort of understand where they are coming from. This sort of thing just works in UR - as long as you know or can work out how to do it. It is, to my mind, rather like Directory Opus: lots and lots of possibilities and controls - but so many places to do it and so many things you need to understand. I don't think I ever read the manual; I did find some really informative key posts in the forum written by the developers. Just a question of finding the ones you need. My guess it is not your install that is a problem, just your settings somewhere.
