You don't say what version of Windows you're using, what software you've tried, nor what exactly the web site is.  All that is potentially useful information in this kind of query...

Unless you have special requirements, you may find it better to try a completely different approach.  Have you tried a Download managerw?  Don't miss the Comparison of download managersw either.

I use Internet Download Manager.  It isn't free, but it's good value, and says it can do what you ask; see Internet Download Manager Features.  Or, I think Free Download Manager can also do it.

If you really must have an auto-clicker, you may need one with reasonable intelligence and at least basic scripting.  Try PTFB Pro ("Push the Freakin' Button").  Or a full-blown macro program like Macro Express.

Easy Screencast Recorder / Re: Display keystrokes in video?
« on: March 20, 2019, 04:53 PM »
It's a good question.  Have you tried Skrommel's "ShowOff"
That's the best one yet.  Thanks for the pointer.  Skrommel is a marvel.

Discussed here as well: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=792.0

I'd like to hear what features you'd like to see added in such a tool.
Skrommel points out that what ShowOff shows is what happens at keyboard level, but I'd like to see "real keypresses" in the sense of what the user thinks they're doing too, so that "Ctrl+D" is shown as exactly that.  Perhaps both methods could be available as a choice.

Skrommel's comment (that I don't think he went on to implement)
Maybe I'll show all keys pressed, just adding up until all are released again?
would be good too.

I'd like a GUI configuration.  I realise one can edit the INI file, but I'd guess most non-coders would appreciate not having to delve into hex codes for colours, for example.

Is there an inconsistency in the INI?  In the comment block at the top it says

;timetohide             ;time in ms

but in [Settings] it has

timetoshow=1000

Although ShowOff's display is described as a window, you can't resize it, and it isn't big enough for some keypresses, e.g. Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Win+Z, which I have configured for one program (that I don't use very often).  It might be nice to have a thin border round the window, as a bit of psychology, to emphasize that what's being shown is monitoring what's happening, not the event itself.  The default black on white colour scheme underlines this; if you put ShowOff on top of the white background of another program like an editor, say, it can be a bit disconcerting to see text being apparently typed twice in different sizes.  That probably means that the default colours should be something else.  Besides, white-on-white makes it hard to see where the window is for when you want to move it.

Most of this amounts to cosmetics, which indicates that ShowOff is basically sound.

I did a quick search for screen recorders that included showing keypresses.  The only one I could find in a hurry that actually claimed to was Movavi Screen Capture Pro.  I'm surprised this feature is (apparently) still so rare.

Easy Screencast Recorder / Display keystrokes in video?
« on: March 19, 2019, 05:17 PM »
I can't see an option to echo keystrokes to screen and have them captured in the video.  Have I missed it?

Otherwise, please can someone recommend a separate tool to do this?  I've tried those below in conjunction with FastStone Capture rather than ESR, but wasn't happy with any of them, and some are getting a bit old, too:

I'm not sure it's exactly what you want, but have you looked at FastStone Image Viewer?  Grab the tutorial from the Download page too; it's old, but may give some helpful hints.

The OP mentioned TreeSize.  From idle curiosity, I entered it into AlternativeTo and found WizTree, which claims to be the fastest of its type and certainly seems like it, much faster than WinDirStat, but doesn't address the more-than-one-file question.

Also, FolderSizes, which apparently can:
You can now search for folders based upon the number of files and/or subfolders they contain. This criterion can be based upon the immediate file/folder count, or the aggregate file/folder count (which includes counts from nested subfolders).
But it's a heavy-duty tool - 27MB and $60.

Nir Sofer's SearchMyFiles can show number of files per folder in Summary mode, but you'd still have to eyeball the report, or post-process it.

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?
« on: March 05, 2019, 05:39 PM »
Catherine Fisher's Chronoptika Quartet; YA time-travel.  Vivid, energetic, engrossing, bleak.  None of the main characters are really sympathetic, but you understand what drives them.
Catherine Fisher writes: I have always thought the idea of Time Travel fascinating, full of paradox and speculation and opportunities for adventure.

If you had the power to change previous events to bring back someone that you loved, would you do it, even if it changed the world? In Venn I wanted to invent a man so deep in guilt that he has lost the ability to care about anyone else.

Into this dilemma I wanted to mix all the old folklore: the wintry isolated house, the dark wood, the beautiful, deadly Shee and their ageless, changeless land; the eccentric inventor, the opium dens and alleys of Victorian London.

I wanted a story full of variety and mystery. And above all, enjoyment.

Automatic Screenshotter / How to capture a transient window?
« on: February 17, 2019, 04:33 PM »
I tried to install the TWAIN driver that came with my scanner.  All I got was a window that flashed up on screen, instantly disappeared before I could read it, and nothing else.  I'm pretty sure it was saying that the driver wasn't compatible with my old Vista, but it would be nice to be certain.

What's the best way to go about capturing such a transient window, please?

Try Bulk Rename Utility (BRU), which can, I think, do most of what you want.  It has a companion command-line utility BRC, but, BRC doesn't have the EXIF tag processing that BRU has.

I specially liked Clippy's ability to group operations togther into a single one, triggered by one click.

Truth to tell, both Text Monkey and Clippy are probably of less value than formerly, now good clipboard managers such as ArsClip and Mouser's own Clipboard Help+Spell that you run anyway have a lot of this functionality built-in, albeit not necessarily available as smoothly.

That looks like Chameleon Startup Manager - not quite the same thing as ad hoc launchers?

It's hardly little-known any more, but the best dialog box extender that I've seen is Listary.  I particularly like its ability to integrate with many file managers, so I can steer a dialog box to whatever folder I'm looking at in my file manager.  There's a portable version.

another small size portable software from Bcheck.

I still use bCheck's HoeKey hotkey program.  I don't use a lot of general hotkeys, but when I change to another computer, I'll probably replace HoeKey with HotkeyP as it's easier to configure, updated rather more often, and probably more powerful.

I'm not sure how much (if any) this helps, but you might like to review these threads (in which I bang on about Unix comm):

I also mentioned fintrsct = File Intersection.  Its home page seems to have disappeared, so I attach the latest version I know of.  DC's forum software won't let me upload a tar.bz2 file, so I've had to ZIP it.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Folder Organizer/Sorter
« on: January 15, 2019, 03:37 PM »
everything goes into a download directory. I would like to sort the download directory and put the files where they should be according to what they are used for.
If all your downloaded files have the same extension, .ZIP or whatever, this won't help; but have you considered using a download manager like Internet Download Manager (IDM)?  You can define separate categories for files by extension(s), and have each category saved to a category-specific directory.  I believe the same thing is true of Free Download Manager (FDM).

I have Installed Kirby Alarm v2.11

I can't help with the original question, but, you appear to be using the last free version (Web site checked 2019-01-14):
Kirby Alarm & Task Scheduler

 Kirby Alarm Pro (v4.45)
File Size: approx 6.5 MB | Date: April 13, 2008, 9:49 pm
Kirby Alarm Pro Lite and Kirby Alarm Pro are the same program, but with some of the more advanced features disabled.

Kirby Alarm v2.11 (Old free version)
File Size: approx 2.47mb | Date: February 10, 2015, 6:52 pm
Old free version of Kirby Alarm v2.11 originally released in 2004.

I don't know why the file is dated 2015 if it's for a 2004 program.  But... maybe a program that old doesn't play nicely with late-model Windows?  The current Pro version - now 11 years old itself - works fine on Vista Home Premium, but I haven't tried it on anything later.  Maybe time to consider registering, or an alternative program?

rShopping List - Grocery List looks interesting, but two of the four stores I'd probably include don't have easily identifiable aisles
[...]
What I need is a list that I can use when I go to store X or Y to remind me of what items I want to buy. I'd like that list to be organized so that all the vegetables I want will be listed together, as will all the fruit, all the poultry, all the dairy products, etc.

Don't overlook that rShopping List - Grocery List has categories, which it calls labels, and you can set it to show only items that have a particular label.  See screenshots.  I don't use aisles either, I don't see the point; they vary by shop, and are occasionally moved around.  I too think it more useful to group "Fruit" together, "Canned Goods" together, etc., and being able to display one such group at at a time is potentially useful.

Actually, this thread made me go back to HandyShopper.  I hadn't realised that it too has this very feature...  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Et Tu, CCleaner!
« on: December 23, 2018, 05:07 PM »
Privazer

I seem to remember looking at Privazer, and getting nervous that it might wipe things I needed.  Time for another look, perhaps.  I'm currently using BleachBit but don't really know how it compares.  The most recent issue (no. 543, 19 Dec. 2018 - 1 Jan. 2019) of UK magazine ComputerActive recommends open-source program XTR Toolbox.  Its home page isn't all that informative; the Major Geeks page for XTR Toolbox pages has more detail:
Author: XTR Toolbox
Date: 04/16/2018 07:58 AM
Size: 2.76 MB
License: Open Source
Requires: Win 10 / 8 / 7

XTR Toolbox is a portable open-source app to optimize, clean, tweak and protect your privacy in Windows.

XTR Toolbox is relatively easy to use with four categories - Quick Tools, Privacy Tools, Other Tools, and Cleanup Tools. It starts with a "dark theme" using brown and white but you can uncheck that at any time to go brighter.

Quick Tools allows you to rebuild your icon and font cache. Privacy Tools feature a Windows apps manager and the ability to remove telemetry. Other Tools has a startup, services, software, and hosts file managers. Finally, cleanup has a junk files cleaner and chrome extensions manager.

While overall, the app is excellent, there are a few oddities. Uninstalling telemetry says that it will remove telemetry from Windows 7 and 8 with no mention of 10, causing us to hesitate. Windows App Manager does not detect what is or isn't installed and offers to reinstall all apps, something we know can be hit or miss as some Windows apps, once removed, can't be restored. Junk files cleaner appears to be decent, but there's no browser specific cleanup listed, and you have to select each category one by one. It was incredibly fast, however. Software manager can remove software, but with so many uninstallers available, we hate to see anyone offer the old Windows uninstall method.

Overall, XTR Toolbox is an excellent fit, assuming it has the tools that you need. While not a complete suite of everything but the kitchen sink, it has many tools that most people will find useful.
They don't add that it needs .Net Framework: 4.7+

What I'd like to do is have a shopping list that includes several stores, such as Safeway, Trader Joe's, etc., or perhaps several lists, one for each store.  For each store, I'd like to have a list of things I want to buy.

HandyShopper does this by defining a master list of items, and also a list of stores.  When you define a new item, you check which (multiple) stores it can be bought in.  Probably the key to using HandyShopper is that it has multiple views.  When you need to go shopping, you start off with the "All" view which shows the master list view combined with the "All Stores" view. As you check off each item you need it acquires a greyed-out checkbox.  When you finish your list, you change to the "Need" view.  Everything not marked disappears, and the checkboxes of the remaining "needed" items go live.  When you get to a store, you can if you wish change from "All Stores" to a view of the particular store you're in.
