Re-reading - more accurately, reading the second edition - of The Tough Guide to Fantasyland^w by Diana Wynne Jones^w.  IMO the first (UK) edition has a better cover, and they lost at least one good pun in the second, but only the latter has the Dark Lord Approved! stamp.

This is the cult classic in which Diana Wynne Jones, no mean fantasist herself, ruthlessly skewers [OMT] every tired trope and cobwebbed cliche of the entire fantasy genre.

Many thanks!    Especially for taking the trouble to make the demonstration video.  You are right, it's an outstandingly good deal for a lifetime license, and I bought one.


I asked a similar question before, and ended up combining FastStone Capture with skrommel's ShowOff;
Display keystrokes in video?  This works even on Vista, but it's nice to have alternatives, and ShowOff's display isn't wide enough to show multiple key modifiers, e.g. something like Win+Crtl+Alt+Shift+F12.

I'm seeing more spam on the forum than ever before, mostly in the morning UK-time, i.e. 5 to 8 hours ahead of US-time.  I wondered if spammers were particularly busy then, vomiting as much as possible in the small hours US-time, hoping for the spam to stay on the forum longer when there perhaps aren't as many moderators about.

I'm in the UK and have just paid the $10 discount version via my laptop, without trying to finagle the system.  That's partly because I've looked at it several times today on my Android tablet, and it never worked properly.  It might show the discount banner briefly, but then went to apparently full price.  The tablet has geolocation disabled, but the web site must know where I am because it shows the price in UK£ as well as US$.  Odd.

Maybe Hamrick prefers Spain to Britain - flamerz got a good deal.

So did I, in 1999    It was the first thing that made working with Windows almost semi-tolerable.  I have licences for Ztree Win and XYplorere too, but TC is the one I practically live in when at the computer.

On the other hand - I carry a USB stick around with me, and I've left it stuck in a computer in the library a couple of times.  My limited experience of USB stick encryption was not very delightful, and I wondered about what free software to put on an unencrypted stick, so that someone picking it up wouldn't benefit from my licence (and wouldn't be able to broadcast it all over the Internet).

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you, right?

EPIM (at least the Pro version) has its own built-in email client, if that's what you mean.  I haven't tried it, but it's there.

I don't understand the wording of the press release, though.  Do they mean that only the new v4 is free?  V4 doesn't support (at least, they don't say it does) Windows earlier than 7.  Some of us are old-fashioned...

You might try Local Website Archive (LWA, free and payware versions) by Aignesberger Software, author of the more famous WebSite-Watcher.  If you need to keep exact copies of web pages offline, it's the best I've seen.  Usually I only need redacted fragments, which I keep in notekeeping-program-of-the-week, but for perfect copies, this is the thing to have.

Given that Aignesberger Software make these two excellent web-oriented programs already, it's a pity they haven't offered an alternative to Linkman, LinkStash, etc.

Well, it only says it supports EXIF, IPTC and XMP, which as I understand it are all established standards.  You could ask the author about adding Picasa - but he might not be interested in a proprietary program that's been abandoned.  Speaking of which, Google at one point owned the Nik collection, and offered them free of cost.  They're now owned by DxO, who are charging for them again, and at more than a casual impulse purchase price.  Maybe Google should sell Picasa on to someone else, but really, the market for digital imaging software must be pretty saturated

Why not just use a sticky notes program?  Stickies (free) and Notezilla (payware) have been popular on DC.  There are many others.  I generally (from inertia) use Magic Notes (payware).

Another program, "Ka Type In," has gone from the normal Web, the author's site is up for sale.  I retrieved the installer from the Wayback Machine and attach it here.  But maybe it's too old.

The best course of action would be to have a dual screen system but the earnings from the program do not justify the expense.

In that case, I wonder if the earnings justify immediate notification...  Another hypothetical approach.  On a single-monitor system, could you harness a macro program to bring the window of interest to the front, run the notifier, then return to the previous status?  And, set it to run both from a hotkey for ad hoc checks, and also from a scheduler so that it would check for you when you were at lunch, or the coffee machine or whatever?

I've never used a two-monitor setup, so don't know if this is feasible.  Could you have two monitors, with the window you want to watch the sole item on one of them, perhaps pinned to be always on top to be sure, and do all other work on the other monitor?
