I'm a big fan of BareGrep Pro by Bare Metal Software, a truly excellent visual grep.  I didn't expect much when I downloaded the freeware Hound from Jimmy the Fork.  Indeed it won't replace BareGrep Pro.  But I was impressed when I turned it loose on a directory that happened to have some PDFs in it, and found Hound's status bar saying things like "Examining PDF", "Converting PDF to plain text," and giving a grep-like posting. I don't know how it does it, and didn't check for absolute accuracy, but the set of results it gave looked right.

Nice bit of humour on that site, too.  E.g., his duplicate file finder is called Dolly, with a picture of a sheep   :)

I've just been looking at a few more Windows editors.  Originally, I was looking for these features:

  • Automatic back-ups
  • Bookmarks
  • Edit multiple files (tabbed interface?)
  • Ability to specify filters as external user tools (most seem to unable to cope with redirection symbols)

I looked at (freeware) Metapad, TED Notepad (great little editor), Crimson Editor (nice), PSPad, Notetab Light, PFE, Editor2, ConTEXT, and briefly at (payware) Boxer.  I have a copy of Notepad++ to try.  I'd be interested in further recommendations, but (correct me if I'm wrong) none of those I've seen so far seemed to have all the features I wanted.  Worse, another very serious lack became obvious: the Windows-Notepad idea of marking text is a feeble, crippled thing.  In almost all the Windows editors I've seen, you have to use the mouse, or Shift-arrow keys, to mark text.  If you press almost any other key, you lose the marked area and have to start again.  That means that if you want to mark a long piece of text, you have to keep tediously scrolling down and just hope you don't overshoot your target.

Compare this with WordStar-style editors.  You drop a Start Block marker with Control-K,B (^KB).  You can use ^QF Find to locate a target point, or ^QM/^Q1 to go to a bookmark - and the Start Block marker is unaffected while you do so.  When you've marked what you want, you drop an End Block marker with ^KK and the block is locked as a unit.  You can still whizz around the file without affecting your marked area.  It only becomes unmarked when you make a deliberate action to unmark it.  That's a far more efficient way than Notepad-style for handling text.  True, I believe Boxer and TED Notepad both have limited work-arounds, but not as good.

Do Windows editors really have to be so bad?  So much worse than my favourite WordStar-style DOS editor, VDE, at handling text?

Of course, WordStar is One True True Way for writers: here's author Robert Sawyer's manifesto on the subject.

IDM integrates seamlessly into Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, MSN Explorer, AOL, Opera, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Firebird, Avant Browser, MyIE2, and all other popular browsers to automatically handle your downloads. General Software Discussion / XY 7.90 released!
« on: December 08, 2008, 03:39 AM »

XY 7.90 released!

XYplorer 7.90 has been released on 08-Dec-2008. Here's a quick introduction to the main new features:

1) Here's a killer feature for you: Mini Tree!

It's an extremely simple idea, but it might change your way of browsing the file system forever: The Mini Tree displays only the paths you have actually used.

This makes browsing blindingly fast (it's instantaneous even with deeply nested subfolders), it makes the tree ridiculously small, and it makes you feel like being back in control (because you look at just the folders you are actually using, instead of being avalanched by all the folders that have accumulated on your drives over the years).

2) Quick Searches now support multiple locations. For example, you may paste a line like this into the Address Bar...

E:\XY\;C:\Temp\;D:\Backup\?*.gif
... and E:\XY\, C:\Temp\, and D:\Backup\ are searched for GIF files.

Quick Searches are remembered in tabs and across sessions, you can save them as Favorites or assign Keyboard Shortcuts to them.

At work, it looks like we will have to edit finished PDFs generated by a proprietary program.  Does anyone have any experience with the full version of Acrobat, or one of the other programs that claim to edit PDFs?  Is there anything that works like a normal editor/word processor does but with PDF as its standard format?

Thanks...

Clipboard Help+Spell / Feature request: Ctrl-F
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:14 AM »
Mouser,

When you're at CHS's main window, please could it respond to Ctrl-F like EverNote does, i.e., Ctrl-F puts the focus in the filter box, and Escape returns to viewing all entries?  Or, make Ctrl-F a toggle?  Also, there's no entry that I can see for Search/Filter in the menus.

Thanks...

General Software Discussion / Injecting HTML into Outlook?
« on: July 02, 2008, 03:35 AM »
At work we have to use Outlook, the full version, not Express.  I have it set to plain-text e-mails but occasionally I need fancier formatting.  If I have a pre-existing HTML page, is there any way I can get it into Outlook as an HTML message?  All I seem to get is the plain text, or HTML as code that doesn't render.  I was somehow expecting to be able to drag and drop, or mark a piece and copy it into Outlook like you can from a browser into EverNote.

TIA...

General Software Discussion / Undelete - am I missing something?
« on: July 02, 2008, 03:30 AM »
On WinXP, if I look in c:\Recycler I find several enigmatically-named subdirectories, all containing desktop.ini and INFO2.  The latter looks like an index.  Eventually, I find the subdirectory that contains deleted files with their names changed to "Dcnnn.{ext}" where the original extension is retained.  - hmmm...  Dc?   8)

If the deleted files are still there, renamed, and there's an index, is there really not an undelete function built into Windows?

XYplorer 7.30 has been released on 30-Jun-2008. Here's a quick introduction to the main new features:

After two years of continuous development Catalog-Based Browsing finally takes over: Now you can hide and switch off the Tree by a quick Shift+F8, and browse via Catalog only.

Quick File Compare. Check out with a single click whether two files are same or different.

Support for Hard Link creation. The new command is located in the Paste Special menu.

List Management: Now you can move items to new list positions via drag-n-drop. Big plus in usability.

In version 7.20 the mouse wheel did not always work depending on the manufacturer. Fixed.

New command "Open Folders in Tabs" allows you to easily switch sets of tabs.

Am I really the first to notice this?

XYplorer 7.20 has been released on 09-Jun-2008.  Here's a quick introduction to the main new features:
Support for editing Unicode filenames. Finally, XYplorer supports inline renaming for filenames containing non-ANSI Unicode characters.

Warp speed through new "treeless browsing". Ever since, the Tree shows basically the same path as the Window Title, the Address Bar and the File List: If you change the current path by any of the numerous ways available in XYplorer, the Tree is automatically adjusted to the new location. Even, if you don't really need that service... The new toggle "Auto-Synchronize Tree" allows you to turn off the Tree temporarily. Here are some of the reasons for doing this:

(1) It offers a uniform maximum browsing speed that's totally independent of the nesting depth of the target locations. For example, if you quickly need to check size and version of a particular system file, it is totally pointless to expand the tree down to system32, because all you need is a quick glance at that file in the file list. Or, if you have a script that needs to visit some location -- why should the tree get busy here?

(2) It keeps the Tree in a stable state and position while browsing. For example, this can be valuable when collecting stuff from various locations via drag+drop into a couple of target folders -- no need to scroll the tree anymore: The Tree just sits there and waits.

(3) It makes consequent use of XYplorer's many ways of going to a new place: Address Bar, Tabs, Catalog, Favorites, History, Hotlist, Breadcrumb, GoTo, UDCs, Scripts, etc. ... they all work flawlessly without the Tree, and if you just need to go somewhere to work with certain items, you may well be completely uninterested in their position in the file system -- no need for a Tree to show you.
New popular button "Copy Path/Name". A new toolbar button for a common task: copying the full path/name of a file item to the clipboard.

The button comes with an extensive context menu (as most of XYplorer's toolbar buttons):
Faster startup. Fundamental re-engineering of core components resulted in notably shorter load times: around 0.6 seconds (!) on a typical 2 GHz processor.

Bits du Jour currently has a discount on Push the Freakin' Button! from Technology Lighthouse.  Offer is valid for over 17 hours from the time of posting.

Purchasing  PTFB gets you a discount on their other programs, including the PromptPal "GUI for the command prompt."  Some of their programs are also available "free" via TrialPay.

I've sometimes used the last free version of PTFB for auto-pressing buttons on certain pages/popups.  It found ways of doing it, even when I couldn't figure out the details myself to put them into PowerPro or AHK.

From PTFB page:

    * Automatically respond to irritating prompts and pop ups.
    * From simple auto-responses & auto-clicks to complex macros.
    * Monitor vital programs and keep them running.
    * Prevent programs from running at undesirable times.
    * Receive notification of all actions taken on your behalf.
    * Highly configurable
    * Quick & easy to use.

Bits du Jour adds:

An Automatic Form Filler. PTFB Pro takes automation of repetative tasks to a new level with its capability to trigger a macro in response to a specific window appearing. This makes it ideal for automatically completing the login screens and connection dialogs you see every day.

(I don't see this on PTFB's own site)

General Software Discussion / Unix utilities for Windows - book/manual
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:46 AM »
I use a number of command-line Unix utilities in ports for Windows or DOS, but usually have to read the instructions each time.  And there's the rub; GNUish is a language that looks like English, but is a lot less intelligible.  Please, does anyone know of any good books or online manuals/tutorials?  I already have The AWK Programming Language by Aho, Kernighan and Weinberger, and the first edition of the Dale Docherty book on AWK and SED, but here I'm thinking of things like grep, csplit, cat, unique, paste, etc.  The slight differences in syntax for how you enter /regexps/ into the shell - how you quote them, etc. - get frustrating.

Thanks...

General Software Discussion / Simple download manager?
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:38 PM »
I thought of adding to an earlier thread, but SMF pointed out it was over 120 days old and would I like to start a new one...

I'm interested in a "simple download manager," in that all I really want to do is schedule downloads for slack times.  However, I ideally want it to meet these requirements:

  • Run on Win98
  • Can use a proxy.pac file, or read whatever proxy Internet Explorer is using (is that wininet technology?)
  • Portable, avoiding he Registry and using relative paths
  • Either built-in scheduler, or, easy control from external scheduler
  • Can be used in a commercial environment

I haven't yet seen anything that matches all those; even FDM isn't really portable.  Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Thanks in advance...

General Software Discussion / PDF to DOC converter?
« on: February 01, 2008, 04:26 AM »
I just hit a PDF I needed to extract details from.  PDFtoText (from the XPDF suite) gave a text file containing two page feeds; Acrobat Reader gave a zero-byte text file.  That bodes ill for any other software on that particular file, but it made me wonder again about finding something else that converts PDFs to a more amenable format.  Various PDF-to-Word DOC and other format converters exist; please, does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

Thanks in advance...

General Software Discussion / Spam filtering
« on: January 28, 2008, 04:06 PM »
What are people using to stop spam?  I'm currently using Mailwasher, but not all that happy with it; insufficiently keyboard-friendly, downloads the entire contents of my mailbox every time - I leave quite a lot on the server  - and now seems to have decided to delete mail it thinks is old, even though I haven't told it to.  Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I can't immediately see ways of changing these settings.  I do like the idea, though, of deleting spam from the server, and never having it in the e-mail client.

Any other suggestions, please?

Thanks in anticipation...

MailWasher Pro version 6.0 has been released. And as promised, this is a completely
free upgrade.

We recommend you upgrade to this version as soon as possible to take
advantage of the new features. Also see below about the 2-for-1 deal
on MailWasher Pro this week only.

New Features
============

Easier to use
-------------
Many of you didn't know how to train MailWasher to block spam, so this has
been made easier with the Action column. The Action column lets you specify
whether an email is 'GOOD' or 'SPAM' and from this, MailWasher will quickly
and automatically learn which of your email is spam and which is good,
saving you time.
All the settings for options, email accounts and spam tools are now able to
be changed in one area. All accessible via the 'Settings' button on the front
of MailWasher.
Additionally, there are many small tweaks to improve your experience of using
MailWasher Pro.

Recycle bin
-----------
Many of you never knew you could rescue accidentally deleted email. So a
button called the 'Recycle Bin' has been placed on the front of MailWasher
and this allows you to restore any email you have lost.

A new look
----------
MailWasher is now a bit brighter and shinier. It was looking a bit scruffy,
so hopefully you like the subtle changes.

Vista Compatible
----------------
Yes, this version is fully compatible with Windows Vista. Finally.

Updated spam algorithms
-----------------------
We've updated the spam algorithms so you should see a big difference in the
spam catching ability of MailWasher if you're using FirstAlert.

2-for-1 deal (This week only!)
------------------------------
If you buy MailWasher Pro this week, you'll get an additional copy for free.
Visit http://firetrust.com...her-pro/promo/HJY945
to get this special offer.
Of course, feel free to pass this special offer on to your friends.
