General Software Discussion / Bartels Media paranoia
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:52 AM »
I recently started using a registered copy of PhraseExpress Pro.  I knew it was capable of being portable, which could be useful to me, but it didn't seem to work like Intellicomplete or Comfort Keys do, at the word level.  That is you can define your own words and short forms, but it doesn't seem to have a ready-made dictionary built in.  So I put a message in their forum:
Please excuse my ignorance, new user query...  I'm already using my own multi-word phrases plus some words I've defined.  But to make PhraseExpress behave like Intellicomplete/Comfort Keyboard etc. which come pre-loaded to give you pop-up lists of words at the cursor, do I need to import a dictionary into PhraseExpress, or something like that?

I'd have thought that was pretty innocent.  After all, we've all looked at other softwares, and nothing is developed in complete isolation.  I got an e-mail from Bartels Media of which the operative part reads:
Thank you for taking the time to write us about PhraseExpress.

Please note that the PhraseExpress forum is not about other programs.

For a start, we recommend to study http://manual.phraseexpress.com first to
learn more about how to use PhraseExpress.
How tetchy can you get?  PhraseExpress seems a good product, but they want us to believe and act as if nothing else exists?  Don't they have any confidence their product is good enough to beat the opposition?  You can't even mention any other program as an example, to explain what you mean?  When I entered my post, their forum changed "Intellicomplete" to "another software!"  They since deleted the post.

I've read Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, and I used to work for a big company with a Stalinist culture, so I've had my fill of paranoid megalomania.  I deleted my registration key and uninstalled PhraseExpress.  So, until the Instant Text people come up with a version that runs on Vista with UAC = yoU Aren't Computing On, I suppose I'll have to use AutoHotkey, just like everybody else.  I'd still be interested in alternative portable apps, though.

Other than Jarte, please an anyone recommend a portable = no-install, run-from-a-USB-stick word processor?  Not expecting anything like Word; indeed, I want something simpler.  Word is often too complicated.  Widely-used format like RTF (as used by Jarte) preferred, and also freeware, but the latter not absolutely vital.

Thanks...

Some editors use JavaScript as their macro language.  The few books I've glanced at in a bookshop all talk about JS in the context of Web pages.  Please can anyone recommend a book on JS as a macro language for editors?

General Software Discussion / Software for n-up photo printing?
« on: January 18, 2010, 02:39 PM »
I want to print some digital photos "n-up," but the sizes pre-set in Windows don't fit what I need.  Please can anyone recommend something that offers a greater range of options, and is, preferably, free?  The first one I found was ACD Systems' FotoSlate 4 Photo Print Studio, which isn't free, but at least it's cheap.

General Software Discussion / Recommend a text scraper for Vista?
« on: September 26, 2009, 03:45 PM »
Kleptomania doesn't seem to work for me on Vista, treating everything as a graphic, despite reporting over 600 fonts in its database.  Please,

  • Can anyone confirm this?
  • Recommend anything that does work?

I've tried both Hypersnap and Nir Sofer's sysexp; both seem to work some of the time but not quite all (unless I misunderstood something).

Thanks...

Another episode in my ongoing saga of "migrating to Vista" woes.

I have an old but little used Canon BJ-10ex portable ink jet printer.  It only has a parallel port input.  My new Vista laptop doesn't have "legacy ports."  Is there any way to make the printer work with the new computer?  Some way of converting USB to parallel, as it were?

Thanks...

General Software Discussion / How to migrate Palm T3 to Vista?
« on: September 17, 2009, 03:41 PM »
I'm migrating from my old Win98SE laptop to a Vista Home Premium one.  I also have a Palm T3 (T/3, T|3) which I've used with my old Win98SE laptop.  Unfortunately
the Palm desktop that comes with the T3 (4.something) doesn't work on Vista.  I downloaded the 6.something desktop that comes with the TX and late model Zire, which does work on Vista, but despite HotSynch saying it had synched correctly, nothing showed in the desktop.  Maybe I missed something, of course.  Palm's Web site is useless, "no free support for (your old model)."

Does anyone know, please, how I could migrate the T3 from Win98SE to Vista?

Thanks...

134
Please, how can I "laplink" between my old Win98SE laptop and my new Vista Home Premium one, as the latter doesn't have "legacy ports?"  Can I use a USB cable, or do I need something else?

TIA...

Bits du Jour has an offer on the UltraEdit Bundle of UltraEdit, UltraCompare, and UltraSentry for 31 August 2009. Deal price $49.95, list price $139.95, you save 65%.

UltraEdit is mouser's favourite editor and came top in the DC Best Text Editor review (though the review is getting out of date).  As well as the editor, the bundle includes UltraCompare that lets you instantly review the differences between up to three files or folders, and support file merging and FTP.  Finally, UltraSentry is an application that deletes data to United States Department of Defense standards, making files and folders unrecoverable, and offers secure disk sanitation, registry cleaning, and advanced browser security.

Please can anyone recommend a macro program with a "learn by example" feature, that can be run no-install from a USB stick?

The obvious answer is AutoHotKey (AHK), but I've had hit-or-miss results with its AutoScriptWriter, and to get anywhere with AHK, you really need to start editing scripts.  What I'm thinking of is the sort of job where you need to repeat an action 20 or 30 times or more, but may never have to do that job again.  In those circumstances, the effort put into script writing might be greater than doing the job manually (if more interesting to do).  A macro recorder would make it quicker and more painless.

I contacted Insight Software Solutions, authors of Macro Express, and they say they're working on a portable version, but can't give a release date (sounds like pressure of too many other things).

WinMacro by Senthil Kumar is a simple freeware macro recorder/player, but may be a bit too simple.  No editing of any kind, for instance.

General Software Discussion / Recommend file shredder?
« on: August 19, 2009, 05:03 AM »
I've just been made redundant - less than seven weeks after my mother died.

Next week I'll need to remove all my own software from the work computer.  It'll break my heart to delete a large collection of good software that's served me well, but if I'm going to do it, better do it thoroughly.

Please can anyone recommend a good file shredder?  I've heard of a few but would like to know DC members' experiences.

I'd really like one that works as a plug-in for Total Commander.  I looked in the TC forums, and found a few references, but apparently Christian isn't interested in shredding, so it's down to add-ons.

TIA...

General Software Discussion / Down with Foxit!
« on: July 31, 2009, 05:26 AM »
I am a registered user of Foxit PDF Editor, which at $99 isn't cheap.  Yesterday I re-registered in their forums (the first time I tried, I could never log in after: the registration information got somehow lost at their end, and was never recovered, despite e-mails).  Yesterday I posted twice, first a pretty modest suggestion that they add a hotkey to toggle the Properties panel on/off, for convenience.  The second time was to add to a short thread Convert PDF files to Word file, suggesting Zamzar (with a caveat), also Nuance and Able2Extract.  Today I tried logging in again, to find this:

vBulletin Message

You have been banned for the following reason:
No reason was specified.

Date the ban will be lifted: Never

They had deleted both my posts.  Nice people, eh?  Looks like they can't stand any suggestion that software other than their own can exist, even though they don't seem to offer a PDF-to-Word converter themselves.

Naturally, I shall be looking for another PDF editor to replace Foxit.

XYplorer 8.00 has been released on 15-Jun-2009. Here's a quick introduction to the main new features:

1) Dual Pane
Dual Pane file management is synonymous with productivity and ease of use. It combines comfort, speed, and power in the most natural way, namely by letting you look at the contents of two folders side by side.
Both panes are tabbed, and can be arranged vertically or horizontally, or shown individually as single panes.

2) Overlong filenames supported.
All fundamental file operations now work with extremely long filenames (longer than 260 characters): Rename, Copy, Move, Delete, Preview, Thumbnails, Backup, Properties, Time Stamp, Attributes Stamp, etc.

General Software Discussion / Screenshot tool with built-in OCR?
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:51 AM »
Please, is there a good screenshot tool with built-in OCR?

I have to extract editable text from documents, including PDFs that are scanned-in image files.  PDF seem to be a problem because it handles fonts differently than Windows.  Some screenshot tools, like the recent free version of SnagIt, can't do it.  I could save an image and use Evernote to OCR the text, though I haven't tried that.  What I do at present is load the PDF into Foxit PDF Editor, increasing text size if necessary, and using freeware JOCR to capture and recognize the text.  This works surprisingly well, but JOCR is dependent on Microsoft Office components, which I'd rather avoid if possible.  I also have Able2Extract which isn't, erm, as able as its name, especially with small fonts.  [For comparison with Able2Extract, I've asked Darwin about Nuance elsewhere on DC].

[Edit]
And lived to discover I was wrong.  Able2Extract is able to do the job, see my confessional message   :-[
[/Edit]

So, please, any recommendations for anything "better?"

Thanks...

Nir Sofer, one of the most remarkable free utility programmers on the Net, has released a new program, SearchMyFiles v1.00:
Description
SearchMyFiles is an alternative to the standard "Search For Files And Folders" module of Windows. It allows you to easily search files in your system by wildcard, by last modified/created/last accessed time, by file attributes, by file content (text or binary search), and by the file size. SearchMyFiles allows you to make a very accurate search that cannot be done with Windows search. For Example: You can search all files created in the last 10 minutes with size between 500 and 700 bytes.
After you made a search, you can select one or more files, and save the list into text/html/csv/xml file, or copy the list to the clipboard.

SearchMyFiles is portable, and you can use it from a USB flash drive without leaving traces in the Registry of the scanned computer.

JoeJoe, author of freewares such as the excellent ArsClip, Rename Master, OkayKeeBees etc., has made available beta versions of new program MouseWrangler:

JoeJoe's freeware utilities

 MouseWrangler, a new program

I've created a new program called MouseWrangler - for mouse gestures. While holding the right mouse button, mouse motions are detected and a series of motions will trigger an action. Currently, a keystroke or a series of keystrokes will be simulated for each gesture.

See the Public Betas page for more information and to download. This program is still in the Beta stage, but it's currently stable and functioning well.

General Software Discussion / Wanted: line highlighter
« on: February 13, 2009, 06:07 AM »
I have to use Web apps that present results in a table, which tends to be eye-boggling if you have to read across to match opposite ends of the line without accidentally slipping onto the next line.  I'm looking for something that highlights a line on screen in the same sort of way that lots of text editors do, highlighting the line the cursor is on, as per the image.    I could start looking at on-screen rulers, but please, does anyone know of a program more like what I'm looking for?

This is a bit like line highlighters from the days of DOS mono LCD laptops  ;)

Thanks...

General Software Discussion / diff for RTF files, please?
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:09 AM »
Is there a program, preferably free, that "diffs" RTF files, please?  Both ExamDiff Pro and Total Commander's built-in diff utility show the formatting instructions as well as text.  I'd like something that ignores the formatting stuff and just shows the differences in the text proper.   Component Software's CSDiff does it in a way, but I don't like the way it displays results, and it seems to put them in a Word doc which has to be read by Word.

Thanks...
