Thanks again for your thoughts and insights. Our needs are similar but not exactly the same (makes the world go 'round, right?). My requirements are more in line with what ReaderWare offers although I'm not too happy with having three separate applications, either. On the other hand, that aspect allows for more precise and meaningful database fields. Less generalization as to what goes where.

I recently spent less than $50 on a used bar code scanner. What a buzz to sit with a pile of CD's, for example, and just blip them as fast as the checkout person at Wal-Mart could ring them up. PRESTO! - they're in the ReaderWare application with the cover art and all the data and reviews harvested from as many sites as I have cared to define. I certainly recommend the investment in the scanner! That almost completely covers the errors problem that you mention. (Also streamlines a lot of other searches, too, BTW. Just scan your cereal box into Google and you go right to the product's website. Even in Spain, I suspect, since UPC's are registered internationally.

Further, for something that doesn't have a bar code actually on it (e.g. a rip) I can still look it up on Amazon or similar, drag it into ReaderWare and, if needed, print out the bar code to put on the item from the data imported. Really neat, IMHO.

I'll certainly be interested to see the results of your comparative analysis if you decide to do it!

Thanks for the review.  Helpful and timely as I, too, need to get my act together. I'm on the verge of plunking down $75 for ReaderWare (http://www.readerware.com). Time is money and I don't have a lot of either. But this thing seems to work impressively right 'out of the box'. I've got a lot of books, music and videos to catalogue so need a system that works, works well and doesn't slow me down.
Hopefully, GCstar will mature quickly. It would be nice to have in the wings for other things and media (as you suggest).
NB Developers: Bar code scanning is crucial, IMHO. Most stuff that doesn't have a bar code already will have one applied by me once catalogued.

Update Scanner AddOn for Firefox, perhaps?

BTW: "Internet Owl" had a lot of potential for this purpose but unfortunately seems to have 'died on the vine' as it appears to no longer be supported. Shame, too.

Bravo!!
And, thanks, Nosh. A very well spent 3.46 minutes.

Pretty much ...
                                 Rename Tab grab.jpg

What am I doing wrong? When I do as you suggest Firefox opens a new, blank tab and runs the Rename script, i.e. it doesn't rename the current tab as when I run the Bookmarklet "manually".  :tellme:

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Monitor Dimmer
« on: May 27, 2008, 01:53 PM »
Ah!  :-[ I get it. Thanks.

That certainly does work although it's a little finicky - easy to not have the focus where you intend and/or several key/mouse strokes to run it the way you suggest. Also you must load two scripts instead of one. It would be fun to have that functionality built into Monitor Dimmer so that was the only thing that it moved and did it with a single keystroke (e.g. Win Numpad/ ?) ... IMHO.

Cheers!
Jim

MoveToMon is an interesting solution but, unfortunately, not one that works for me in this situation. The way I have my screen real estate carved up moving applications from one monitor to the other would only serve to make a jumble of things,

I think that this little program is pretty neat! Thanks

My use of it is just slightly different in that I don't often watch movies on my dual monitor setup. But I am frequently working in one application on one monitor while having to keep an eye on something on the other. So it's nice to have the one of lesser interest dimmed slightly. But when my focus shifts I'd like to be able to quickly swap the dimming effect to the other monitor. Any chance of incorporating that as a hot key rather than having to go through several mouse clicks to achieve it?

A nice icon will be fun, too.

Thanks for sharing, as they say.    :)

General Software Discussion / Re: LoudTalk - anyone tried this?
« on: May 20, 2008, 11:35 AM »
I haven't tried LoudTalks yet but it seems to me that one advantage (in a situation like your house) would be not having to wait for someone to answer - or bother them with having to.

Also, the "group" (broadcast?) feature seems useful ... IMHO.

It doesn't seem to be there anymore. The link is just a GoDaddy page of advertisements.

I need a license to kill, can you help me with that?

Just remove the original photo... :D
 (see attachment in previous post)

I'm sorry, sir. That license is out of date.
Please step away from your computer.

That's cool. I will be following this thread closely as well as the Xobni forum. I, too, had to uninstall it a couple of days ago. I couldn't cope with the memory leaks or not being able to close Outlook without rebooting. In fact, I had to do a "Detect and Repair" of Outlook to get it back to normal. Xobni certainly does do some useful stuff, though. I'm anxious to get it back!  ;)

Living Room / Re: USB Flash Drives: What to look for or avoid.
« on: February 26, 2008, 09:13 AM »
According to an item in one of Gizmo Richards newsletters last year there is tremendous difference in performance amongst Flash Drives. I'm sorry, but I can't provide the exact reference right now but he's been messing with them for a while his figures are impressive if not shocking. Good luck!

That's pretty interesting, Darwin. I've been experiencing most of what's been discussed above (running XP/SP2 with 1.4 Gb RAM, Outlook 2003) and although I, too, have found that I REALLY like many of Xobni's features I can't afford the resources cost or not being able to shut down Outlook cleanly.

Does your recent discovery imply that these other problems are 'fixable' if we can get the authors' attention? A little alarming that they might seem to have their heads in the sand!   :(

Fox News? Oh, dear. There goes credibility out the window.   :-[

We'll need to find a better feed. This one is "morning chat show gibberish" with pretty people yucking it up and no soundtrack from the original report.

Are there links to the video that they're talking about? I couldn't find one. Or do I have too much AdBlockPlus and similar working.

On that note, a moment of silence for all the unfortunate consumers who ended up with a now antiquated HD-DVD Player.....

No! Wait! It's only a flesh wound.

Yep I love a well told story too which is why I enjoyed it so much.

Me, too. But bravo for TextAloud (and other screen readers). I was able to enjoy it from beginning to end and still do other things. So I don't know where I fall in the personality profile. In the 11% I hope.
Thanks for passing it along!

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Hotkeys/keyboard macros??
« on: February 14, 2008, 01:46 PM »
Either solution looks great. Yes, I have installed Texter and it seems that their description is a little confusing (having lived in Europe for over 20 years I 'share your pain' over date formats!). In Tester I simply defined a hotstring called "d s" (without the space) and it returns the system like so: 14 Feb 08  which is my system format. And another called "d t s" which returns the time, too:14 Feb 08 @ 15:46 hrs:  I also have a number of often used signature and such which are very handy. The only trick is to name them with 'non-naturally occurring' strings.

How about simply using the system date/time format?

BTW: Texter found over at the Lifehacker site can easily be used for this ... and LOTS more.
