Now THAT is SLICK!

Sending positive vibes!

Also I can recommend I.C.T. - Ice Cream Therapy.  ;)   One of our Greyhounds found herself in another dog's argument <sigh- stuff always happened to her>, and ended up with a number of stitches and associated drains (I called her the Borg Dog). We needed to distract her while we massaged some of the muscle tissue to keep it supple and drained, so we got her on the couch with a bowl of ice cream and fed her tidbits as she got a massage. Of course the other dogs lined up too, but what surprised us was one of our cats, Gracie, also climbed onto the couch arm and patiently waited for her turn. With a little soft ice cream in a spoon, she gently lapped lapped lapped it up, like everyone else in the family. (Well, the dogs tended not to gently lap it up...)

So if dietary concerns aren't an issue, try a little soft vanilla. I can envision from the wonderful picture how careful she will be.

We have a slightly used one available...

Not only does common sense not get updated, I've found it is also prone to being disabled very easily.  :tease:

Living Room / Re: WinXP is officially dead!
« on: July 27, 2014, 07:49 AM »
I expect that option fakes your installation into pretending it is one of these... does it say support will extend to January or to April?

Two Windows XP Embedded products will lose extended support in 2016, while two others face 2019 end-of-life dates, according to the post:

"Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 3 (SP3). This is the original toolkit and componentized version of Windows XP. It was originally released in 2002, and Extended Support will end on Jan. 12, 2016."
"Windows Embedded for Point of Service SP3. This product is for use in Point of Sale devices. It's built from Windows XP Embedded. It was originally released in 2005, and Extended Support will end on April 12, 2016."
"Windows Embedded Standard 2009. This product is an updated release of the toolkit and componentized version of Windows XP. It was originally released in 2008; and Extended Support will end on Jan. 8, 2019."
"Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. This product for point-of-sale devices reflects the updates available in Windows Embedded Standard 2009. It was originally released in 2009, and extended support will end on April 9, 2019."

Then again, mobile devices could still use more of just about everything, as it's harder to fit the more powerful things inside the smaller cases and also deal with heat/battery issues.
Bingo. I think battery and mobile device power technology is begging for "an exponential" to ride for awhile.  Where's Nikola Tesla when you really need him??

It was a nature documentary about the penguins
That would be this BBC special report I believe.

My Dad had a copy of Hortus 2nd that he used religiously, and which is now in my library. It is far from new, although of course the information is still accurate.

That said it has been eclipsed by newer editions that are more up to date, such as Hortus Third (from 1976). It may not be something for now, but if his interest continues (and he is in North America  :P) then you might consider it later.  (Warning, it is as expensive as a college textbook... :o)

Living Room / Re: Avast is vulnerable?
« on: July 10, 2014, 07:54 PM »
I also have Avast! free. I have also noticed some significant deterioration in my PC's performance over the last couple of months, and last week I also had a message from Win7 saying my antivirus is not working, even though Avast was saying everything is fine...
Just for comparison, I switched over to Avast! Free for A/V and ditched MSE. I have not noticed any slowdown, slowness in email, etc. I also refuse to get any of the "Internet Security" editions of anything so maybe that is a prevention. :-)

I also get a message about A/V not working, but that is limited to when the engine is updating. If you don't get notification, maybe is the Silent Gaming mode enabled?

heh - how long would Angela last up there?  ;D

The two biggest threats to this country's way of life are a false sense of helplessness on the part of the general public - and its silence.

True. But I think the silence is 50% ignorance and 50% fear... 50 years later there are ever so many more options available for responding to complainers...

464
don't you need spaces between the = chars and the parameter? (like "reset= 120")?  i seem to remember that.

Hm, I might build one of these to replace my Mom's old fart sunglasses...  :P

It oughta be either Lasagna or Little Debbies... dunno what the poll options are though... :-)

Living Room / Freedom Summer
« on: June 24, 2014, 10:13 PM »
Just saw the Freedom Summer program on PBS.  How could you watch that and not get chills.  I was an 8-year-old in Alabama during that time and only caught the very slightest glimmer of anything.  What heroes these people were.

468
I don't know.  I just downloaded drivers the other day with no problem.  For a 9 year old printer, no less.

Please see this link. The last couple things I have been looking for ran into this.  Looks like it affects the server line, not the printer line apparently... at least there's that.

469
I have to say Dell used to be the bomb in support - call in, talk to a knowledgeable person, no charge unless they have to ship or do something (at least for server support). They've made it a lot more difficult in the last 10-15 years. Still have the best support web site though - at least you can find systems, pull up original configs (if they're under 7 years old), and.... they haven't started charging you for drivers if you don't have a support contract (shame on you HP!).

470
I've used FreeFileSync for similar tasks, although never quite 400gb worth (~50 was my max) and never from an Acronis disk (although I've copied 10gb over a vpn connection, and smaller amounts to TrueCrypt volumes). FWIW.

Anyone here related to Eugene?
Yeah, I only fool people about 30% of the time too... nobody confuses me with Wintermute...

Google Chipsbank Umptool.  My old company bought about a thousand of those "secure" thumb drives where you had to enter a password to see the hidden partition. Of course it wasn't compatible with anything newer than XP so we had to remove it. Low level format took care of it.

General Software Discussion / Technet After Technet
« on: June 02, 2014, 07:21 PM »
Has anyone determined yet what happens to Technet keys when the subscription ends?

Mine goes belly up on June 22, and I need to build more stuff than I have time for (several iterations of server O/S, Exchange, Sharepoint besides what I have running now).  There's no way I will have time enough to install even half of it, even if I do a half-assed job and go back to clean up later.

Presumably activated keys will continue to run, although even that isn't certain. As for unactivated keys - ???

Small percentage of repair bill is on its way. Just one thing... after you get it all fixed up, make sure not to run into anything while driving forward...  :P
