General Software Discussion / Re: Text editor with filtering of lines
« on: November 02, 2014, 11:37 AM »
Thanks Shades!

However, when those lines get hidden using TextFX Viz, I don't get the little markers in the margin if I want to see one portion of what was hidden. If I hide the lines manually, the markers show up and work as expected.

Please let me know if you have any questions or any feature requests for future versions.

Very nice work!

For a feature request, when using the filter bar, maybe it would be nice to be able to see some number of lines of context around each of the found items.

As info, SPFlite does this easily (and at no cost).

The caveat is that this is a line-based text editor (it's a clone of the IBM ISPF Edit facility, for any other old mainframers). As such it doesn't behave quite like what you're used to. But for certain things, SPFLite can satisfy like nothing else. I have a copy that I fire up when I need to do things that match its strengths.

As a line-based editor, you have line numbers on the left of the display and a command line at the top. Global types of commands (Find, for example) are entered at the top, and directives for one or more lines are entered in the line number area.

Per the original request, once a file is open, at the top you could type in "x all" (to exclude all lines, hide them from sight) and then "f mailbox all" which would locate every line that contains the word "mailbox" and make it visible:

Screenshot - 11_1_2014 , 7_18_39 PM.png

Any old ISPF Edit user can tell you that it can do things that are impossible in other editors. While that's probably not quite true, it makes a lot of things trivial that would take a lot of work in another editor. And there is definitely a withdrawal when you leave that environment... that's where SPFLite comes in. It is not a perfect clone, but it brings 95% of ISPF Edit and has been extended with additional features (and scripting in Basic, instead of Rexx, which I would prefer).

The free version has an innocuous nag screen that just tells you you're using the free version, and it only shows up more or less every 5th time you use the program, as you're exiting. If you donate (which I have) you get a small utility that fixes it not to display that screen.

As I said, this is not my main text editor, but it is extremely useful to have as a tool. I wish they had a "demo" script written, in the sense that you could follow the script with a sample file and see the unique things it can do.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ad Muncher 5 will be free
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:28 PM »
I have to admit that I never tried Ad Muncher before, because of the price and because I was afraid that I might like it. — True. I do.

So far I'm amazed with the amount of garbage this app is capable to block. Also, I've never realized before how much the AdBlock plugin slows down the browser.

True dat to both.  Too bad Ad Muncher isn't working with Internet Explorer properly - which I didn't realize until I tested it on some other machines (not mine).

General Software Discussion / Remote Desktop for Kindle
« on: October 26, 2014, 08:13 PM »
Can anyone recommend a standard RDP app that is available in the Kindle store?  I'm trying to find a good one for my wife to access her work PC from her new Kindle.

I say a standard app, meaning not one that uses an intermediary server like LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, etc.  I don't think the IT staff wants her installing anything on her PC so that precludes a whole class of remote access apps.  I've installed the Sonicwall app on her Kindle so she has access to the corporate network, and she gets in from home using RDP so she's used to that.

I installed the 2X app and the AccessToGo app to try out. Both work, but both seem a little more awkward than they should.  I have the Microsoft RD client on my Nexus 7, and I think it works pretty well, but that does not appear to be available from the Kindle store.

I also bought the Xtralogic client a few years ago, so I tried that from my Nexus and found it terribly unintuitive. The price is up to $15us now too, so I won't be putting that on.

Any thoughts? I'm not opposed to spending a little on a good app that works as it should, although one with a free trial would be nice. So far AccessToGo wins, but I hope that's because I haven't tried whatever you will recommend...

PS- I have a bluetooth keyboard on order for her too, I think the on screen keyboard would push her over the brink on a 7" tablet!  :P

Kalos, what are the relevant features that you are really looking for? And do you have a need for any less mainstream features like RPN entry for example?

If you have everything in one location, it might be easier to use fsum to build a list of the MD5s of the files, then you can sort the result and see what is duplicated. Names and file extensions can be misleading.  ;)

Navigate to the top level and use "fsum -r *.* > checksums.txt"  and you'll get a nice report. Then you could "cat checksums.txt | sort | uniq -D -w 33 > dups.txt" to get a good list of just the duplicates. (You'd need unxutils for cat and uniq - and other useful stuff too.)

Both reports are attached here for a sample folder.

-Not sure if Derik's will do same to any thumb drives, but it's worth considering.

Yes, I once did an Autonuke after booting from the thumb drive and proved that it wipes everything.  ;D

The latest Cryptowall variants are mean. They encrypt a random number of files from most, but not all, folders they have access to, then they reset the file date stamp back so you can't tell as easily what has been hosed. I think our company has handled 6 instances for our customers in the last two weeks, 3 from the same client (different locations), one of which entailed an all-nighter since I was the 3rd level on call. In most cases we can't identify the person who was actually hit - whoever it was never spoke up, we ended up finding out when a file wouldn't open, and find the DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.txt files.

On the plus side it's a good way to verify that your backup system is working.  :P

Given what I've seen, I'm writing something to at least detect this early, kick out a ticket, and try to grab enough info to see who is causing it. The all-nighter instance was due to a process that ran for almost 24 hours, would have been a lot easier if we saw it sooner. That's my weekend project. That won't get finished over the weekend <sigh>.

Heh - I take the list at face value, none of the A/V companies are interested in false positives, it might compromise their ranking scores!  Those first three probably just send reports to the bit bucket anyway  :P

Also, fwiw, you don't mention VMware vCenter Protect (which used to be Shavlik until they were bought out... and a sorry story that was). They license the Vipre engine, or at least used to, for the product.

I want to build a website providing info on how to maintain focus and avoid distractions, targeted at those with ADHD, and use this for the background.

My 7-year-old just told me that makes him dizzy...  :D

This system has been on the sheet to be upgraded/(REPLACED) now for over 6 months.  I guess now someone will finally OK it.

Heh... we're making plans to put in a replacement for the file server at one of our plants, a Dell 2500 that has been humming along for probably 13-14 years or so. Just started acting persnickety on reboots.  It's not the only 2500 left in the field, either. That was a pretty good model for its day.  :P

[off topic] Of course, in recent months parts of it and its brethren have been Cryptowalled several times.  Russian mafia coders, may Níðhöggr devour your spleens.

General Software Discussion / Re: Folder / Files Copier
« on: October 16, 2014, 08:11 AM »
Wizard_not, could you just create a sample of the new file structure somewhere and then make a zip file that contains that sample, then when you need it somewhere you can copy that zip file to your target folder and do an "unzip here"? That's not quite a one-click operation, but it might be just two or three.

Living Room / Re: Your favorite cartoons of yesterday and today?
« on: October 07, 2014, 05:45 AM »
Looney Tunes definitely. Written on two levels, nothing like today's abysmal stuff. Animaniacs were good too, although they were a little young for me at the time. :-)

Manual management is fine until you get to a certain point. The Solarwinds freebie is nice since it knows when it last saw an address being used and can tell you. The freebie requires you to run the scan manually though. But when you acquire a few plants that use /15s and you don't know where the "stuff" is, something you can scan with a few times can give you a better idea of where things are, IP-wise.

Finally, does stoickjokers suggestion about sorting help?

Indeed, my thought was initially sorted by last modified date. Look on the View menu, there are options. Including to hide empty drives (like a DVD drive) most likely. (Although this is straight 8, not 10.)

Sorry - I shoulda added the  ;D to my comment!  Having a cat who needs regular application of an ointment, I just know how easy to work with they are as a species...  :P

Replenishing the butter or replacing the cat would be matters of simple maintenance.

Right. Replacing a cat would be a matter of simple maintenance. No worse than giving a cat a pill, I suppose.

My general thoughts are these:

I have to agree with Iain on these points. Turn on Defender at least for now, and worry about specifics later.

Here's another vote to skip MSE. Its corporate clone, System Center Endpoint Protection, is in my experience garbage - it lets too much stuff through and is apparently easy to make non-operative. Too bad its license cost is included in the Core Cal... bean counters don't want to pay extra for something that actually works well...

Nice one, Mouser!

Out of curiosity, it sounds like you knew of this chair before the request came in, but if not, what were your search terms and on what engine? (Search Term Optimization, you know... like SEO but aimed at people ;))

Do you think this Vango DelMar Chair might fit the bill?

There are several options here as well, though they're not UK.

These all seem to be camping style as well, not traditional "folding table/folding chair" style.
