Living Room / Re: Firefox fixes the version number problem
« on: August 17, 2011, 02:03 AM »
FF users need to stop giving IE a bad rap. We need the "vast majority" to stay there so the Mozilla devs can take care of stuff that matters and put an end to the weirdness that's creeping up over there.

A lot of extensions marked incompatible work fine even after FF has moved up several versions. If someone were to rely solely on automatic updates FF would never update. And perhaps throw a nag box about incompatible extensions everytime it checked for an update. There are too many ifs and buts to implement an intelligent auto update for FF.

It isn't anyone's right to make them think about it. I'm not defending anon or hacking in general.

And yes, getting you account hacked can definitely hurt. Realizing that Facebook is vulnerable to hacks, scams, whatever could help. They're two distinct aspects, you don't necessarily need to be the victim of hacking to have your faith in FB shaken. Simple bad press may get the job done.

I was responding to 40s comment about everyone on FB having opted in. I don't have a dog in this fight, I just think what's happening is unavoidable. If not anon, it'd be someone else down the line.

I do believe a lot of people have blind faith in services like Facebook and don't realize all the implications of putting their personal info out there. They could definitely use a wake up call. Having their faith in FB shaken a bit can't hurt.

i don't mean to nitpick here but I have heard of cases of identity theft on FB where the authorities haven't done anything to help the victims despite several people reporting it. Perhaps not for lack of trying, but I suppose the policy is "when in doubt, f### it!" I'm sure a few of those victims would be delighted to see FB go down in flames.

The bottomline is, FB, like most of the Intertubes, is unregulated - even if an imposter is eventually stopped, a lot of irrevocable damage can be incurred.

This cat and mouse game, IMHO, is unavoidable. Even necessary for future security. I'm just glad Anon is keeping itself busy with the likes of FB and (hopefully) not messing with the local nuclear plant.

Mozilla dev owns up to FF4 regression.

And while things improved in Firefox 3/3.5/3.6, Nethercote admits "Firefox 4 regressed again" in part because of all the new features that were shoveled in, as well as "over-aggressive tuning of heuristics relating to JavaScript garbage collection and image decoding."

If they must do something to embarrass FB, I hope it's slightly more creative/entertaining than a DDOS. Facebook offers lots of possibilities. 8)

PS: Setting Guy Fawkes as everyone's profile pic would be pretty funny. NTM memorable.  ;D

But pot? Jeez... Selling weed doesn't make you a bad person. Weed is hardly a serious problem

LMAO!! I didn't say pot dealers, half my friends smoke it. Come on, R... I think you know what I was getting at.;D
But just for the record: pot dealers are duly exempted.

These guys are Wikileaks on crack. Among the "snitches" they've exposed are people who've turned drug dealers and other dangerous felons in. I don't see how throwing the innocent under the bus can be justified.

I tried the latest Nightly, Aurora and v6 Beta yesterday. Couldn't run the nightly well, too much weirdness caused due to the changes in the UI. Aurora did feel snappier, I'd just come off reading a review that it was targeted towards performance, so hopefully that wasn't the placebo effect. v6 Beta felt kinda the same as 5, couldn't tell much of a difference. Roboform doesn't work on any of these, even after manually bumping up the version in the .xpi. I'm back to v5 and really looking forward to Aurora getting out of the pipeline.

I guess it's the addons. I had 55 installed -  have cut down on a handful of non-essential ones and have gone back to FF 5.1. I'm on 32 bit XP, Core2 Duo 3.16 GHz with 3.x GB RAM and a 1GB GFX card.

It runs OK if I have a few tabs open but I stress tested it with ~100 tabs  :-[ and it all but died. Come to think of it, maybe I was a bit harsh. FF 3.6 _does_ handle the load better, though.

I spent most of yesterday moving to FF 5.1.  Made sure all the functionality was there, got replacements for the addons that didn't work, got the layout pixel perfect, tweaked the major new about:config settings. And what a letdown! The thing is a step back from 3.6 in speed and resource consumption. The UI feels more sluggish, browsing speeds seem to have taken a hit too. Had to fkn roll back to 3.6!!

If it's just file creation/modification you want to monitor, you could use a disk monitor.

I use Xplorer2 which allows you to sort by comment (the comment column can be hidden once you've set it up), so you don't have to mess with the actual folder/filename. Works with folders but not all file types. And IIRC, won't carry across to FAT32 partitions (for files). Be careful when using special characters since they may interfere with some other program's functionality. For instance ! is a NOT operator in Everything search.

I'd probably use one or more underscores if comments didn't work.

I'm always torn when it comes to these issues. It sucks having big brother breathing down your neck. OTOH, I also can't stand libtards whining about security checks. We live in f#ed up times, there's no perfect solution.

General Software Discussion / Plugging Adrive
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:31 AM »
If you came here to read about floppy disks you're in the wrong decade thread.  :P

I just want to plug the online file storage service, Adrive.

I needed to download a few episodes of a TV show before they were taken down from the channel's site. The downloads total to a few GBs and I have other stuff downloading that I don't want to interrupt. So I looked for an online service that would directly download files from the web. Fetch.io, which I tried first, was a disaster. I read about Adrive and tried it next and it seems like a great service. No-nonsense signup, 50GB free, it fetches the files fast from 3rd party sites (~10 mins/GB - would be dependent on the host servers too, so YMMV) and it allows the use of a download manager with resume capability. I thought they deserved a mention.

Thanks, should come in handy for stuff like PMs on forums where I tend to forget to save my sent messages.

I have REFOG keylogger running on my PC 24x7. I _am_ nice enough to give my friends a heads-up when they login to their email/whatnot from my machine, though. ;D

It's much more than a simple keystroke recorder but AFAICT it's extremely light on resources. If you're looking for thorough monitoring, you should check it out. The only PITA is, it's always flagged as malware by Malwarebytes, no matter how often I ask it to ignore it. And REFOG breaks up its logs into several tiny files, so I have to individually mark each file as safe.

Sounds interesting, cyberdiva. Esp. the retention for an adjustable time part. I'll be sure to try it.  :)
