Living Room / Re: Is Cybersex Cheating?

This is a little OT, but it is parallel...

Some years ago I spent a couple of years in Papua New Guinea. There are two interesting facts from PNG that relate (somewhat) to this thread:

1. Polygamy is legal in PNG
2. Female prisons are filled with women who have either murdered the "other" wife or the husband of the "other" wife.

Some things were never meant to be shared, no matter what the understanding concerning the arrangement. I guess that's where a written marriage contract (if there is such a thing) would fail completely: in a deep relationship there is no limit to the level of sacrifice or sharing that you are called to.

So as much as I like the collection idea from GTD, I think infinite pool and cherrypicking are issues.

I do agree, which is what I meant about deceiving oneself. That's where I thought that priorities may influence the mix. Hmmm, maybe priorities and deadlines.

Where the infinite pool comes in really handy is when there is no priority or deadline: it's just an idea that I want to achieve (someday), and I want to break it down into managable tasks along the way. It certainly isn't going to work for the purchasing of ingredients for Friday night's dinner party: that task has to float to the top before Friday night!!

For bits and pieces I've used KeyNote for years (and years it seems): for simplicity and functionality nothing beats it, as superboyac says,

KeyNote is the George Washington of notetaking software; it is the father of the genre and the one that started it all (in the modern format).  It is discontinued and not supported anymore, but it is still one of the best, and that is saying something.  It would be in the Big Three but other programs have built on it's core features since its time.  That being said, it is still awesome and great for the simple user, and is probably better than some of the average programs in this genre that are not free.  You can work with multiple databases at once, it has a clean interface, and it has some interesting and useful plug-ins.  Still has very good import/export capabilities.

There have been a couple of people say they were going to pick up the batton (but I've lost touch and interest) so don't know where any of that is up to? I still have KeyNote files that I have old bits and pieces that I use! KeyNote exports well to RichText.

At the moment though I'm a SurfuLater true believer: it's fantastic for research work, and is more than adequate for keeping notes, etc.

But if you're wanting actual story related software, the couple of applications that I'm acquainted with (though not necessarily used for an extensive period):

I think the thing I like about this system so far is that everything that needs to be done gets popped into a pool, out of which I can select what I want to do (when there's time).

I understand that priorities are not part of it for the purist, but like some others, I think I'd prefer to record a priority (just to help me differentiate between the tasks).

But the big pool of tasks has some real benefits: if you choose the one you most want to do then you're more likely to be most productive on that one rather than the one you're don't want to do. That's not always true of course, and it's open to deceiving yourself... but the point of it all is that we are wanting to get stuff done and not just make a show!

I guess that's what I like about ToDoList too (or most software based lists): you can record this stuff and filter it in or out, archive it, sort by something else, or put it in a different file. I was a bit concerned that with a big list and paper that trying to sort through paper would get unwieldy. I'd appreciate some feedback from you paper-shufflers out there  ;)

I've got to ask: What's the issue? Cybersex or Cheating?

The issue for me would be "Cheating". If I give something that I've promised to give to my partner to someone else, then that is cheating. I don't care what it is: Cybersex, time, money, affection, me...

Hi Carol:
Your link seems to point to software that combines bitmap and pixel in one package - but that really isn't what LitghtRoom is about - it is about a professional workflow solution for RAW file processing and building catalogues of images. (Well at least they are the primary aims but there are others too).

Ah, probably true. What caught my attention what the similarity of using layers for effects without altering the base image. I should have read further...

Are the colours (on the cards) colour coding?

I'll be heading down the software road as well... I'll be using ToDoList (which I've used on and off for a number of years now).

I'm done (actually was done yesterday)... my special area will be an issue as the house is just about to enter into serious renovations; but we'll see how it goes.

Didn't microsoft announce something like this some time back???  :-\

edit: Found it here  ;)

Yes: Thanks Ampa!

The odds were very good! Amazing really.

I think what we need to do is to draw a line between work and recreation! And then distinguish between the tasks we have to do.

I have the same discussion with my wife, and thankfully she fully understands that I get great pleasure from working up an Access database or Spreadsheet solution that equally could have been done with a suspension file in the filing cabinet.

And thankfully I'm learning to distinguish between what would be more appropriately "knocked over in a booring way"!

But isn't that the question we have to answer at work, whether the planned response to the problem is the best use of resources?

Thanks a lot that solves the problem

Excellent!!!  :D

I'm at a loss: every word I've used it's Ctrl-F to get the Find/Replace/Go To requester. As Cranioscopical mentions (which I assumed), Find All is on that requester.

You'll need to click the "Highlight All Items" toggle to see the "Find All" button, otherwise it remains "Find Next".

Living Room / Re: USB sticks - do you need a famous name?
« on: August 22, 2006, 12:00 AM »
When I had my computer on the floor at work I realised halfway to the bathroom that my computer was following me, dragged along by the USB stick strap around my ankle.

It's a bit bent, but still works [a middle of the range type brand]. When I took some photos to get printed the lass behind the counter viewed it suspiciously...

Good advice about backing up etc. I should have it synchronised.

Hiya:

Do a "Find All". On my copy of Word2003 it will highlight all occurrences.

Tab completion? Would Auto-Complete and Auto-Correct do what you want? They're found in Tools > AutoCorrect Options...

If you want the minority report type of interface, check out Tactile 3D: http://tactile3d.com/.

You may want to see this tread, where 3D Desktops were discussed (at least in part)

Hey, I thought it was a great idea, not unlike trackbacks on blogs: it was neat how you could combine images from all over the net into one big, browsable image.

I thought about the GPS thing too and it scared me somewhat: Wouldn't it be scary if you not only got directions from the map servers but you also got to SEE what it would be like?? Would you then need to make the journey?  ;)

I'm in too (I think I just heard my desk give a cheer),

Thanks!

Just thought I'd mention that I'm having great fun with TiddlyWiki: simple & flexible. No software required: just a browser!  ;) Works extremely well off a USB.

MonkeyGTD is also another spin off that I'm using as well (but that's more pitched at projects etc)

Does any notekeeping program have a way of reconciling the files by importing new or changed nodes only, without overwriting the whole file?  I assume that's the way Palm PDAs work, but I wondered if it were possible with USB keys.

I know that nevf is working on sync'ing the SurfuLater files across two computers (eg: home and work); some other discussion about this functionality here.

1524
yair, I saw that plus a couple of other references, but none had an answer unfortunately.

...and I'm guessing you haven't played with it before... most odd! Pity really: it's a bit querky (interface wise) but the value for money can't be disputed. I'm not sure that I love it, but it's done the job for me for many years now.

Thought I'd download and try photoimpact on the strength of that. Unfortunately, when I tried to run the demo version I got a really curious message:
"limit users can not try this product. You can use normally after successful activation"

Odd! Although the same problem (although with a different ULEAD product) was reported here. I don't know if that helps or is the same situation as yourself?
