Yes, you can imagine that there was a lot of self examination going on... like: why am I feeling like this, or that, or whatever, or nothing at all... and I guess there was a general lineal progression, but there were lots of ups and downs along the way too.

You only think we look well adjusted because you can't remember the thoughts going through your head when we took the photo!!  :)

Thankfully it was long enough to get through the institutionalised thing and get to feeling a sense of completion: otherwise it could have been very messy (well, more messy than it was) ;)

Funny, I was just typing that bit up in the blog... The track passes through 12 "towns" where we camped in caravan parks and who also held our 12 food parcels. Most of those towns had cafes and shops where we could buy fresh food (it's amazing how focused you get on red meat and vegetables on a walk like that: we'd be dreaming of steaks, potatos and sour cream and stacks of vegetables on the days leading up to a town ;) ).

The longest stretch between towns was about 7 days. We eat about 1.5kg of food a day (between us), so that's 10.5 kg of food -- which was getting to the limit of my carrying capacity  :-[

Here's the shopping list that we had to purchase and pack and deliver before starting the walk:
Muesli20.4 kg
Powdered Milk2.96 kg
Tea Bags388 bags
Large Clip-lock Bags43 bags
Scroggin9.8 kg
Small Clip-lock Bags118 bags
Sultanas1.225 kg
Vegemite4 tubes
Cheese160 servings
Muesli Bar96 bars
Staminaide1.596 kg
Dehydrated Meals43 meals
Cup-a-soup86 packets
Supper Snack82 servings
Drinking Chocolate41 sachets
Coffee Bags82 bags
200ml UHT Milk11 cartons
Boiled Lollies318 (maybe ~7 packets)
Emergency Chocolate1 family bar
Soap1 bar
Laundry Powder10 washes
Garbage Bags12 bags
Packing Tape1 roll
Matches2 boxes

:-[ Too true: brain wasn't working, or not explicitly on that example. PNG doesn't have Exif tags, but TIFF does.

Well... according to ExifTool, there are heaps of file formats that have metatags, not all are very useful for this purpose though...

The pics are coming (I had issues with one of my SD cards that has proved unreliable and has slowed me down a bit), but I've just finished the timelapse...

Found a very suitable piece of music on Jamendo for the backing:  Walking

single files as well as multiple folders, as well as patterns

Single files and multiple folders I can do.  Patterns...well, depends what type of pattern you're looking for.

I might add in a search subdirectories option too.

Yep: Subdirectories seems obvious (but I didn't think of it ;) )

Patterns:
  • *.jpg, *.png
  • gps*.jpg

Any chance of getting commandline parameters? I'd like to run it and load a folder...

Sure!  I'll put that on the planned features list & will probably add it in by tomorrow.

If you're fiddling in there... I'd probably find it even more perfect if the commandline allowed single files as well as multiple folders, as well as patterns (if it's not asking too much  ;)).

This is nice!!  :-*

Thanks Perry, this works.
Does anybody know the solution to the second problem?
Maybe the ahk forums have solved this...

Why hasn't Word done it itself on installation? I have Word in my New Context Menu??

159
Is it the same as 2007: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2008/07/get_word_2007_to_use_draft_mode_as_default?

Edit: You'll also need to save your Normal template in Draft View as well as "Allowing it to open in Draft View"

Sorry to hear this - and after such a great adventure. It's a harsh lesson but "copying" from one location to another is the only way; maybe even treating the original cards as permanent media rather than something you can reuse. That's all in hindsight though.

It was only 1 16Gb card (of 3), and not every image on the card -- it's quite random... and actually, only mainly evident on copied files once they get onto the HDD (and even then not every time for the same file)... which made me wonder about the software: so I'm generally able to copy them off again without too many issues (apart from time).

I'd also blame the card(s), i.e. I've seen it happen and assumed it was the card so threw it away - then not had the problem arise again. I convinced myself this was due to putting the card in my back pocket - did you store the cards in a less than perfect way?

:o  You are joking, right?? Me, do something less than perfect??  ;)

Well, seriously... this was such an important walk (for us), that I had the filled cards in their cases, inside a padded bag that was inside a protected pocket of my pack.

And the images that are corrupt on the card, are fairly few... unless the card can affect the file as it's copied off?? I wouldn't have thought that was possible??

Anyway, I've got to get as many rescued before I start any investigation which may overwrite those files and make them unrecoverable permanently :(

Maybe it's all part of the adventure?

161
I had a Canon that after I ran and played sports with it in my pocket became similar to this permanently.

 :( :o >:(

162
When actually taking the photo or after a serious jerk (bump)?

Generally I'm pretty steady when taking a photo (after long experimentation of long exposures without a tripod)...

In my experience serious jerk

and I should have added: permanent problems or just for the current photo? Because this is rather ad-hoc...

163
Based off of my own experiences (personally and professionally), I'd say it's the card.  To rule out the camera, have you tried taking any test photos with it and one of the known good cards?

I will... I'm busy trying to get this mess fixed at the moment  >:(  But have you found it to be every file or random?

But interestingly, I just found one moved:

That IrfanView said:

And recoved, which was the same on the card:

I have seen similar to your screenshots (but not the JPEG errors) when the camera's CCD went bad when the camera was moved or jerked too much.

When actually taking the photo or after a serious jerk (bump)?

Generally I'm pretty steady when taking a photo (after long experimentation of long exposures without a tripod)...

165
and another:

which IrfanView complained:

Here's another example:

Original Move:

IrfanView complained when saving after reducing:

I'm on Win7 Professional SP1 64bit, lots of RAM (don't laugh Nudone), and a SONY CyberShot camera.

After my recent short walk I have 3 16Gb SD cards full of photos, which I moved to my computer with MultiComander. The first two cards went flawlessly, but I've run into dreadful issues with the third, where the images are corrupt. Well, corrupt on the first copy/move (mostly).

What I did, which is what I've always done (maybe not any more though  :-[), is to move the files from the card to the computer. Some of the moved files ended up like this (reduced): DSC01272_bad_s.jpg. The regularity of a file being corrupted increased during the move opperation (that is, it was maybe 1 in 20 at the beginning and 1 in 3 at the end). I may attach other examples, but some of them look they have multiple layers overwritten with mismatched origin points (ie offset). I used EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard 5.0.1 to recover the deleted (when moved) files, and mostly they seem to be OK: 2011-10-17_11-11_FILE2171_s.jpg. But sometimes the files are also corrupt on the card, iterestingly mostly different to the file that was moved, but the same as what was recovered. I also tried Recuva, but Recuva found 3169 files as Easeus found 9442 files, which seemed to give me greater ability to find a non-currupted file. BUT, what is also extremely odd is that sometimes the recovered file on the HDD is not the same as what is on the card, and when recovered individually.

Now, what that implies to me is:
  • The original move produced some corrupted files. Caused by?
    • MultiCommander?
    • Windows?
    • Hard Drive?
  • The camera wrote corrupted files.
    • Bad Card? But it's not consistent?
    • Naughty camera? It's not the most perfect environment for a camera in the hot and cold, sometimes rain, and jolted when I fell over... But the timing of the corrupt files doesn't correspond with any of those events.
    • The recovered files may not have been the final file the camera wrote? Maybe the camera used the card as a temporary storage when combining images?
    • The recovered files are not named the same as what was moved, so I'm not sure what that means?

If a JPEG expert is interested they can access the original, non-reduced, files for comparison here (warning - they are large files). When I edited them with IrfanView (eg to resize), IrfanView would complain that the file format was corrupt: extra data where it shouldn't be, or missing data; which to me sounds like the file has been written incorrectly (either by camera or software during the copy):

I'm going through, slowly, and re-copying them when necessary and I think that in the end I should not have lost very many images (though with 9,500 I can afford to lose some and not be too upset  :-[), but the why of this problem is troubling me... anyone with any ideas?

The main lesson I learned is that Move as a file action is not the best idea when there are lots of files and it may be best to check first before removing them from the origin location (but in my defense: this is the first time that something like this has ever happened).

Well... we're back (I think)

Two months of having had your life reduced to 6 simple tasks each day:
  • eat
  • pack up
  • put one foot in front of the other until the next camp site
  • set up
  • eat
  • sleep

makes for a very uncomplicated life. Getting back home (not that I entirely recognized it when we got there), has been an interesting and difficult experience. The memories of life before the walk are like far away stars that spin away well outside our reach or influence.

The walk itself went extremely well (should hope so, it was thoroughly well planned), but there were no surprises like injuries, sickness or accidents. We got every type of weather except snow and most of our gear performed very well (I was getting rather worried about our boots that were getting very thin and we were starting to feel every stone or stick we walked on). We were pretty happy to finish as there was a strong sense of completeness, but we didn't really want it to end (if you know what I mean); and maybe the funniest thing of all in the midst of that simplicity was that each day pushed the previous day out of your head so that we were only left with today (they often had sufficient troubles and difficulties to keep us busy anyway) - so now it all seems so far away.

I'm now dwarfed by the task of sorting through the 9.5K photos that we took, the 256 pages of diary entries and the 1,000 kms of GPS log, trying to work and battle the xenophobia that seems to have snuck in somewhere when we weren't looking  :-[  But I'll get it all sorted as the flowers were awesome and the scenery brilliant, and there are some wonderful memories hidden in there somewhere...

Thanks for all your thoughts and concerns: it was absolutely fantastic and we'd do it again at the drop of a hat... tomorrow would be nice  ;)

169
Thanks all

Why can't I sleep???

It will be amazing, but at this point I just can't imagine what it'll be like (we've only done a couple of weeks in one go before)... so beyond our experience (I guess we'll either get addicted or hate it?). Apparently it's modelled on the Appalachian Trail?

I've taken extra strong measures against Sandi's propensity to blister, and on the 110km of training walks we've done it's looking effective. If it's one thing I'm desperate about it's making sure that Sandi enjoys the walk. And yes, with 48Gb of card space available, I'm expecting (if not obliged to take) quite a few photos  ;)

...and it would be great if you could drop in (although that's impossible physically), I'm hoping I'll get a sense of your vicarious enjoyment along the way ;)

Anyway: busy day ahead - we've a late flight over to Perth arriving near midnight then 3 extremely busy days after that before setting foot on the track (which at this point will be a relief  :D)

Catch you when we get back

The answer is complex, and simple: We both enjoy getting away, into the Australian bush, by ourselves and our God.

That's like... great. :)  Really don't have anything else to say after that, other than that's pretty humbling.

You and me both

And keep your eye open for Cody in the trees!

Well, as kyrathaba reminds me, looking up is not the safest thing to do down there. I've been reading other people's blogs and they're reporting many snake encounters every day: so eyes down and concentration is the order of the day (all 54 of them).

Don't forget snake-bite- and first-aid- kits...

I didn't think about this when I married Sandi, but marrying a Nurse has significant benefits in that regard  :D  Sandi says that I have better instincts, but she is the knowledge holder

Our snake-bite kit, if that's what you mean, is a compression bandage. Sandi was saying that because the snake venom travels through the lymphatic system that the whole thing is a bit of a non-issue. But I'm not planning to test all that stuff out...

I'm writing this from a cabin on a lake, visiting family.. Your adventure sounds amazing.. life changing even.  Please carry a little bit of all of us on your trip so we can enjoy it vicariously.

Yes, been thinking about your family visit... hope it goes extra well!!

Yes, the SPOT Satellite messages are neat in keeping people up to date with location. I guess in the future we'll be able to do a lot more, like images, etc (but that will have to wait till I come back), in the mean time everyone can at least follow us around  ;)

172
Actually our boots are just about the only piece of clothing that we have not renewed. Most of our other clothes were sourced at second-hand stores (so well worn in ;)) -- but they were all either getting too thin or worn to take on a 2 month walk (last weekend it was my shorts that I put a hole in :( ).

Our boots are not that old, they're propper hiking boots (unfortunately they don't come with an odometer), but I'm sure they'll last the distance. They are a little on the heavy side, but we like the confidence that gives: lots of snakes down that way (mind you the light weight walkers swear by just a pair of volleys -- I have read somewhere that 1kg on your feet is that same as 5kg on your back).

The camp shoes we've got double as river shoes and are pretty good walking sandals in their own right -- so will get us out of an emergency.

173
Sandi and I are 78 hours from flying out to Western Australia and the start of a 1,000 km walk from Perth to Albany. The Bibbulmun Track is well known, and getting more so; I'm not sure how we came across it now, but it feels like we've been working toward this point for about a year.

We've been in active planning for the last 6 months, and actively training for the last 4 weeks, and at the moment I'm at fever pitch and hardly able to control myself with the excitement (or is it nerves?).

Anyway, we'll be gone for just over 2 months and completely out of communication (to tell the truth, the planning and training has been so intense that I feel that I've not been on the same planet this year: I haven't kept up with NANY at all, and don't even get to read my feeds properly, all my little projects are lying at the bottom of the hard drive...).  Actually, we will be communicating: we carry a SPOT Messenger that acts both as a EPIRB and a satellite messenger, so we'll be communicating our current location -- this will be displayed on our site: mitupela.net/gnw/bibbulmun.html, as well as FaceBook and Twitter (if you're interested).

It's at this point you stop and ask yourself "Why the hell are we taking leave without pay to spend two months walking 1,000 km in Western Australia's sun, wind and rain?" The answer is complex, and simple: We both enjoy getting away, into the Australian bush, by ourselves and our God. The solitude and isolation that blooms into a deep belonging and closeness feeds both us and our relationship. The simplicity of reducing your day to putting one foot in front of the other generates a buoyancy in our spirits.

Of course, putting your foot in front of the other 1.3 million times is something we've not done before in one go :) so it'll be interesting to see what lies in the unknown beyond our previous boundaries.

All the best for the next two months whilst we're away!

Perry, that walking trip looks wild.

It's made me feel selfish really  :-[

It's pushed just about everything else out of the way (NANY, coding, drawing, etc)... But it's an investment into my marriage that I'm very much looking forward to.  It's also for me (which makes me feel selfish)... but hopefully it will reap dividends in other areas  :)

I'm not looking for investors since i don't think something like this can be sold.. But i'd be very pleased to find a company that would be willing to fund further development/customization for use in other projects, enough so i could keep working on it.

  • Can't donations be gathered pre-project? (just give me the opportunity...)
  • Can't the project have a funded version as well as a donation version? (although that sounds like a headache)

I'll post some updates and screenshots as I go along -- still a ton of work to do and it's a rather massive project.  And I would be very interested in hearing ideas and suggestions for it.

If it's something all encompassing, maybe if it's done in a modular way so that aspects can be excluded if not required?

For example, if you don't want Projects for a particular site it can be excluded from the Db and interface.
