General Software Discussion / Badges
« on: December 12, 2006, 05:53 AM »
Badges is a system where you can add graphic overlays to existing file | folder icons that act adjectivally... I always though file notes were a handy thing but this seems like a great idea for a more visual solution:

Badges - the program, allowing placing handy emblems upon familiar Windows icons. From now there is no need to invent sophisticated file names, to drag icons to different corners of the screen or to seek new ico-files for having fast access to a folder with recent projects or with latest images. Place a badge on the desired icon and you will notice it immediately!

10 different kinds of badges, each represents its own semantic category: certified, cool, danger, delete, distinguished, favourite, important, new, personal and web. This will satisfy even exacting users. The quantity of the placed badges is unlimited.

But if you must have text you still can... with an additional Shell Extension:

« on: December 12, 2006, 04:11 AM »
That was a good read, thanks skrommel!

but the file managers i have seen are proof that using a namespace is not necessary (but it would be kinda cool).

My only thought on that is that exposing it to the system as in a namespace only extends its usefulness and useability.

I'd be interested in reading the links you found...

as mentioned in that thread, it is a bit bloated for the needs addressed here.  and the ability to add items to a specific virtual folder using the commandline it a must for the kind of functionality mentioned above.

Yep, I completely agree: just thought the two ideas were not too dissimilar  ;)

integrating this as a shell object so that it can be viewed in a file manager certainly has its benefits.  i am only concerned that going down this road would require more time/effort than a traditional "coding snack".  i would be completely thrilled with either way.

Agree again! Especially: something would be great!

A Recent Documents Manager was mentioned Over Here, which is not too dissimilar to some aspects of the requirements posted in this thread.

The more I've thought about this the more I like the idea...

a folder of shortcuts to a group of files is not as useful because you get the right-click context menu for the shortcut (rather than the file it represents).  this means that you cannot move/copy/rename the files.  a virtual folder provides access to the files as if they were really grouped together in an actual folder.

That's true, but my thinking was that the application that manages the shortcuts would do the other functions: copy, move, write to dvd, etc.

I think that would give you the best of both worlds: a lot like your favourites folder, you can open and act on the shortcut.

the question is what is the best way to allow all programs to access the same virtual folders.

My first thought was doing something like Shell Object Editor would get it very accessible.

pretend you are working on a project.  for example, say you are authoring a dvd.

The term that comes to mind is Categorised Favourites  ;)

Doesn't sum it up completely, but it's what came to mind...

This is a nifty idea.

Pikybasket will certainly do the job (if it's just a list of files type job) for a single folder.

But, I'm guessing you're more wanting a shortcut to the file?? That way you can interact with it via Explorer as with a normal folder: play mucic/add to list/etc??

I'm thinking a group of folders (aka your music.box type folders) and a group of SendTo entries (ie to those folders) would fit the bill?? That would get shortcuts into your "virtual folders", but then it depends what you wanted to do with them?

May be a better solution if your wanting to act on the files from the context menu directly (like Pikybasket does) is a separate application?

ContextMenu Commander / Re: ContextMenu Commander
« on: December 08, 2006, 05:44 AM »
basically ive been spending a lot of time making a really nice friendly and very powerful infrastructure for letting users design custom hierarhical menus and stuff, which would be useful for designing custom context menus, launch bars, and more.  i'm really very proud of it and i plan to be using it in several programs.

This certainly would be very handy! I've done a bit myself with AutoIT and the SendTo menu... the only issue there is that it's an app per menu item. But neat all the same: so you could have your "Send to NotePad" there for every file type.

But with this framework and the simplicity of AHK or AutoIT it would open up a lot of powerful options.

For example, at work where IT do not allow us to install programmes, I've a "CopyPath" AutoIT exe in my SendTo which copies the file paths of the selected icons.

Nice idea Jammo re your installations! ie you can link to a whole lot of on-line stuff...

I've used it work for the people I manage to document procedures for the group (they love it as IT has not provided an intranet solution)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Command-line spellcheck utility
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:43 PM »
The thing that bugs me is that every application has it's own dictionary, so that you have to add a correct word to each dictionary.

Wouldn't it be better if there was a "system wide" dictionary, so that if I add a word in MS Word it could also be available in my non-Outlook* email programme and my speller enable text editor [PSPad] and my webbrowser (through IESpell) and etc and visa versa???

I use an online dictionary like OneLook generally, or tinySpell if I'm not in a programme that has spell checking (ie PSPad, Word, etc)

 Thanks for your post AJP! I was a KeyNote user too, but have moved on, mainly to SurfuLater, but I also use TiddlyWiki at work (where I can't install SurfuLater). I have a script that can dump a SurfuLater file as a TiddlyWiki file, and when I get time I'd like to see about doing the reverse  :)

I mentioned TW in the main discussion, but it didn't seem to raise any interest at the time.

TW is brilliant, it does use standard Wiki formating (as you showed), but when I last looked there were a few people working on a WYSIWYG editor  :-\ But even so, I've managed to convert some of my computer semi-illiterate workmates to using it in a collaborative framework.

You can get your own hosted TiddlyWiki over at TiddlySpot using any of the more common versions:

WikiPedia also has a good list of resources.

BidiXTW has some great plugins that allow you to upload to a server and for enabling Group Authoring... but the development community is extremely active!

search "mouse catcher" and you'll see...  :D

Quick definitions (mouser)

noun:   a cat proficient at mousing
name:  A surname (rare: 1 in 100000 families; popularity rank in the U.S.: #11334)

 ;)

I've been using OneLook for ages now: it really is great... and with the wildcard filters narrowing large result sets down is a snack!

Don't give up the fight to improve yourself, if you've fallen off the GOE wagon, just pick yourself up, make a post, and get started again

I don't think I've fallen off the wagon, but it does feel as though I've been fighting a guerrilla battle; and App103 said:
I am happy about the accomplishments in the kitchen, but not at the expense of everything else...and it can't be the time I spend in the kitchen that is causing me to fall behind in everything else, because I am not in the kitchen all that much.

Some general feedback (not necessarily associated with this assignment [hope that's OK]):
 My our ToDo Lists for the House renovations work really well: perfect almost! They've taken the pressure off, given us a springboard into weekend productivity .
 At work I've discovered that my productivity/organisation is closely tied to that of my team (of three). My manager is great, but she's pretty disorganised. So I've managed to talk her into weekly meetings that I religiously minute and distribute (including action and carry over lists). So without saying anything we've fallen into a pretty easy GTD implementation that seems to be working (at least I feel better knowing that it's detailed what we've all got to do).
 I've pretty much trained my fellow employees to send me Outlook tasks, rather than bits of paper.
 As far as personal projects go, they seem to suffer at the bottom of the priority scale. But maybe that's an indication that the whole GTD priority thing is working??

Now FlyLady is a real challenge, I mean: who prefers the dishes to playing?? But I love the bit by bit approach, as it's got a real chance of succeeding.

A final though: Some years ago I read a book by a lady who walked herself into clinical insanity and walked herself back out again. One of the main points I remember from the book was her definition of insanity: "misplaced importance". In my mind this is what gives FlyLady's approach a lot of credibility as it's trying to re-align our tasks by proper importance. The dishes are more important than playing!

Also love the idea of Clutter: that it's meant to be trashed rather than tidied. A a couple of years ago I changed our Financial Records in the filing cabinet so that we had one file for each of the seven years we need to keep stuff. Each year the contents of the file gets moved to the next file until it gets to the last file... then it gets thrown out. That certainly solved my financial clutter problems.

I've use sandboxIE for some time as well without any problems.

I did start using something else (that escapes me at the moment): but that involved far too many restarts to set up the sandbox environment.

It's hard to beat $5  !!

I'm just playing with the free version, and at this point it's pretty good! It's going to challenge ieSpell (which is great in WebPages)! The only benefit of ieSpell that I can see (at this stage) is that it does your text area all in one go.

Programmes I can't live without [definition: use and require every day] (in descending order):

Programmes I'm [quickly] getting attached to:
  • LaunchBar Commander:
  • SandboxIE: Really easy protection.
  • ToDoList: So much more than just ToDo lists!!

 I note that I've not added a file manager: I've probably tried them all, just can't settle on one is my problem!

I should probably add the graphics programmes somewhere (like DogWaffle, PhotoImpact, GIMP) but that's more hobby (like VisualStudio)

« on: September 21, 2006, 08:10 AM »
agreed, two monitors really does make a difference.

I've got to say that it's the best thing I've ever done was to let the fellow I buy my computers from to talk me into buying two monitors: they're Samsung 17" 173plus SyncMasters.

His argument was that you get much more real estate for the dollar with 2 17" monitors than one huge monitor: that works well for me (not so good for movies).

Next best thing would be three (or four: but that would be getting greedy  ;))

Wow!! It's got a few bells and whistles!

Didn't have any problems with my normal email accounts (work email was an issue though).

Seems like the perfect solution for multiple email accounts/computers/IMs as you can have them all on one page?

It's nice that the emails stay on the origina server too (as that would deal with a lot of privacy concerns).

I may just have to try it out...

you can only feel bored if you have something to do

That's a really interesting observation. My wife has identified something that happens to her. She's a normal over-busy woman who is generally storing away things to do when she's got some time. The probelm occurs when the time arrives and she chokes on it. She'll get to the end of the day and say "I'm sure there were things I wanted to do?"

Not that she's bored (but is is very similar); it's an interesting parallel to your comment (BTW: I'm hoping this GTD will rub off  ;) )

I really like Next Tasks and Due Dates on my tasks that are floating around my pool.

I'm another ToDoList user (read a great review here you beat me to it urlwolf!), and this is the way I've set mine up (which  travels around on my USB Drive):

Next Tasks:
  • As SubTask
  • Priority 10 [highest]
  • Become filterable as: Show Incomplete Tasks + Above Priority #10

The nice thing about that is that I can have my Next Task for a "Someday Project" will still display when filtering, but it shows as a SubTask of the Someday Project [Priority 0].

Waiting for:
  • Allocated To
  • Allocated By (when not me)

Tasks that are allocated can be filtered as well.

Maybe Tasks/Projects:
  • Priority:=0

ToDoList only filters on priorities above #, so low priorities are not filterable by themselves.

Use "Due Date" as the calendar for keeping track of your appointments and commitments: ability to sort by date and show tasks due by day, week or month.

Projects can be formed in the TreeView as nodes and childnodes.

I'm using Categories to group Projects/tasks together  ;): For example "GOE" is a Category at the moment!

The only other thing is some paper and a pen when TDL is not available  :)

Living Room / Re: Is Cybersex Cheating?
« on: September 09, 2006, 12:55 AM »
Actually not knowing what CyberSex was I just looked it up on WikiPedia.

There are other issues/problems I didn't quite understand:
cybersex satisfies sexual desires
I didn't understand how that was possible.
Cybersex allows "real-life" partners who are physically separated to continue to be sexually intimate.
Certainly: this is a digital version of the time honoured "love letter".
It can enable participants to act out fantasies in which they would not engage in real life
Wikipedia had this as an advantage, but I'd imagine that if you are participating in something (at whatever level) that normally you have qualms about, that that is NOT a healthy exercise??

I'll grant you app that if two people consented to cybersex in the sense that it was (or would be) just a creative and fictional exercise, then by definition they would not be participating with their whole selves. Then it's like acting. But I wonder how often it is actually like this?

In the future we will endeavor to offer all authors the chance to comment on their product and link to their comments - i think it will make for a better review.

It may also be an idea to offer it pre-posting?? Some of these "language" issues would have been picked up then.
