PC World - Three Apps' New Approaches to Old Standbys
"Expand Clipboard's Memory

The Windows Clipboard is just a short-term holding tank; make your snips more hip with Clipboard Help+Spell. When running, this powerful freebie automatically stores all the text copied to your Clipboard, turning it into a huge searchable database.

Clipboard Help+Spell marks every entry with the date, and it lets you sort the entries into groups. The Quick Filter function searches for entries containing the words you specify.

Other functions make Clipboard Help+Spell even more useful. For example, you can type directly into Clipboard Help+Spell and then press a button to paste the text into the last open window of any program that accepts text. And as you might guess, it checks spelling.

Clipboard Help+Spell costs nothing to use, but the author--known as Mouser of DonationCoder.com--accepts donations for his work. Free/donationware."

General Software Discussion / Problem with Stumbleupon
« on: December 01, 2007, 05:59 AM »
"Too Many Accounts

There have been too many accounts created from your internet address. If you have never created a stumbleupon account before, you can request an account here. If you already have an account, you can recover your password here. .
If this still doesn't work for you, please Contact Us to let us know :)"

Lately, I have been getting the above message when I used the Stumbleupon button.

When I wrote to their support, I got the following rather unhelpful message which is contrary to what is happening since I use a security enabled network which I'm pretty sure no one else access. Besides me, I have 3 other family member who shares the network with their own computers but other than myself, no one uses Stumbleupon :

"I regret that this message indicates that someone
who is sharing your IP address (or Proxy) is using
our system in a manner that breaches our terms.
The system is geared up to detect such breaches
and imposes a limit on further activity.

Unfortunately, this also affects other members
using the same route of access.

The engineers are investigating other solutions,
but I regret that I can offer no immediate
solution.

Regards,

Barry Conway"

------------

Anyone else on this forum face this Stumbleupon problem too ?

Has anyone any suggestions to overcome it short of a re-install of my OS ?

Thanks

Any Windows Mobile enthusiasts here - hmm ! I don't see much discussion on Windows Mobile devices software at Donationcoder.

Maybe this 45% off some really great products for the PocketPC or Window Mobile devices may draw some of these enthusiasts out of the donationcoders that hangout around here.

I was at this free wireless zone where I buy a coffee and you can use the wireless.

This is a great way check a few sites when you are out and about.

But just today, I noticed that they started taking over about 7% of the real estate at the bottom of each page.

I could block the advertising graphics. But that did not release the "hijacked" screen real estate.

I examine the html code on the page with the Firefox Firebug Addon and in fact I can get back my screen real estate by deleting the relevant code, but each time I refresh, the real estate gets taken over again.

Does anyone knows of a Firefox Addon that can help me block all this pesky squatters and reclaim the real estate.

Thanks

I'm testing a software application that also runs a mini-webserver so that it's database can be accessed from the web via port 82.

I made sure that my firewall, I allowed Incoming TCP ports 82 and allowed Outgoing TCP ports 82.

There's one thing that I'm rather confused by.

If I use Windows ipconfig command, I can see my address as 192.168.1.100 (on computer A where the mini-webserver resides)

And if I use http://192.168.1.100:82 I can actually see the data on the mini-webserver, but it is only accessing Computer "A" locally via my wireless network.

If I use a tool like FollowmeIPlite (http://www.snapfiles...re/network/fwip.html), my External IP address is shown as 202.156.173.124 for example.

Now I have 3 computers A, B, C in my home network. Each one of them show exactly the same External IP address 202.156.173.124

But computer "A" is where the mini-webserver resides.

If windows ipconfig command shows :
"A"  ipaddress as 192.168.1.100
"B"  ipaddress as 192.168.1.101
"C"  ipaddress as 192.168.1.102

What would be the correct url to put in a browser for me to access port 82 on computer "A" from anywhere on the internet ?

http://202.156.173.124:82          - This would be incorrect as which of the computers would it refer to since A, B, C has the same External IP address. In fact the browser cannot locate the mini -webserver at all.

http://192.168.1.100:82             - This would be incorrect although it would access the data via the internal network which is not what I want.

So the url is somehow a combination of both.

Is there some software utility that can help me determine the correct answer ?

I would appreciate if someone can point me to a solution ? Thanks

Gmail has been giving me this message a lot more frequently.

This has happened simply because I delete a particular email, or tried to add a Label to another or simply click an email to open it.

It certainly unusual activity but by seem to be created by Gmail itself.

Is anyone else experiencing this as well ?

I was talking to the University co-op vendor who sold my son the Lenovo T61 Thinkpad and since I'm the so called resident computer "expert", I was exploring how I should go about downgrading from Vista Business to Windows XP Pro.

In the course of the discussion with the co-op vendor, I was given to understand that I cannot just buy an "ordinary" SATA harddisk, pop it in and just install Windows XP Pro on it because of certain proprietary things that Lenovo put in the "Lenovo" harddisk. That is, a ordinary SATA harddisk, will not work.

Why I would like to buy another harddisk is because I don't want to overwrite Windows Vista on the existing harddisk that came with the laptop because at some future point in time, he may just want to so call move on to Vista.

There are two possible comments that I make to this so call proprietary things that Lenovo put in the "Lenovo" harddisk (which if I remove it, looks exactly like a Hitachi harddisk - simply because it says so on the label).

1. It's a crappy red herring to scare me so I have to buy the high priced "Lenovo" harddisk from him - ie just go and get a ordinary generic SATA harddisk, either a Hitachi, Seagate or Samsung - I have done this so many times with Fujitsu, Toshiba and a Dell as well.

2. It is true that they make it proprietary by what they put in the harddisk - In which case, it is a rip off and I'll never ever buy a Lenovo again, at least not in this life time.

Tell me your experience or what you know about this.

I'm inclined to think it's 1 - it's a crappy Red Herring.

I have been playing around with Vista for a few days now and my conclusion is that there's still a bunch of software I almost cannot live without that still would not run properly on Vista.

I was googling around and found this :

For more information on Microsoft downgrade rights, please visit the following URL:
http://download.micr.../downgrade_chart.doc

I have not had a chance to call the Laptop manufacturers to find out how many arms and legs do they want.

One issue of downgrading a new Vista based laptop is to make sure you can obtain the right drivers for the hardware.

65
I've just started looking around for a Bluetooth Car Kit that works well with Nokia phones.

Of course Nokia has one called HF-6W and presumably it works well with their phones.
Any feebback on the HF-6W would be appreciated.

I would also appreciate feedback on other brands that I should consider as well. Presumably they would work well with Nokia phones as well.

Besides seamless integration like voice dialing, clear voice, charging cables, number of Bluetooth enabled phones it can pair at one time.

What else should I be looking for ?

66
I was setting up this new Laptop that came pre-installed with Windows Vista.

I had re-partition with the shrink and extend command that are native to Vista.

I even did a Full format of the 2nd Partition as Drive D (NTFS).

It seemed to work well for a few days and I was able to copy files to D drive.

And suddenly today, when trying to access D, it says that it is unformatted and would I like to format it???

What a shock. In all my years of computing, I have never seen something like this.

It's unbelievable !

I'm glad it happened now as there isn't much on Drive D as yet. But it could have been a lot worse.

Who knows maybe that's a good reason for many of us to buy more hard disks as backup hard disks.

Has anyone here ever experienced this ?

What may be the cause ?

Is there a utility available to recover the RAW partition to its former NTFS status ?

67
I'm trying to setup a laptop (that comes with Vista pre-installed).

After installing all the various utilities, printers and making other changes, I normally like to take a ("pure and unadulterated") image in case it gets messed up later on, so that I can revert to its pristine state easily.

Anyone here have any experience with a imaging software that runs on Vista ?

Thanks

68
I'm trying to configure this Vista laptop and I'm having some difficulty finding a firewall (other than the Microsoft native one that comes with Vista)

Understand that Commodo is good (best ?) but there is no Vista version yet.

Any suggestions ?

69
I'm sticking to Windows XP as long as I can. But I had to buy my son a laptop that is bundled with Vista - so much for free choice.

So I would like to partition the harddisk.

Can anyone suggest a good Partitioning software that works with Vista. Of course if it's freeware, so much the better.

General Software Discussion / The state of speech recognition
« on: July 31, 2007, 09:58 PM »
I first started looking at speech recognition some years ago and then stopped using it somehow because it never quite caught on with me because of issues like processor power, training required and accuracy issue even after that.

I wonder if anyone here has successfully implemented the likes of IBM Viavoice, or Dragon Naturally Speaking and now I noticed, there's another contender for much less CoolsoftLLC's Speak To Text (and currently with a discount to boot for only about $20) http://www.coolsoftl...p?productsummary=9#9

Are there any people here who are regularly using any of these to type notes, letters etc on a day to day basis ?

Would you care to share your experience ?

73
I have long entertained the idea of reducing my computer overload by removing the software that I seldom or rarely use but are just around chewing up CPU cycles during startup and while in normal use or otherwise occupying my registry and disk space.

So I thought this ought to be a piece of cake (bad example to use when dieting).

Well, my cake example was ominous enough when I started by trying to uninstall Microsoft Windows Desktop Search.

I got a warning message which essentially said if you remove me, it will gum up your computer saying that a series of programs (including Mouser's beloved Find and Run Robot and others ) and Microsoft patches etc may no longer work.

See jpg attached.

Has anyone removed Microsoft Windows Desktop Search and experienced the "End of The World" ?

Any suggestions and help would be much appreciated.
