Instead of giving in to the temptation to buy the 4.0GHz 32GB-RAM powerhouse, I settled for an incremental improvement: upgraded RAM from 6 to 8 GB, and moved the OS to a 120 GB SSD.

152
Yeah, I think I'm doing the same sort of justification, mouser. The PC I've got is functioning just fine, and more than ample for my needs. But, I make a few hundred extra bucks a month proofreading, and I think to myself, "Go ahead. Treat yourself. You deserve it..."

Living Room / How do you resist buying ever more powerful PCs?
« on: July 14, 2015, 10:26 AM »
So, recently I purchased my stepson a serviceable refurbished Win7 machine. And while shopping, naturally I find a unit or two that I sure wouldn't mind having:

Intel Quad Core 3.4GHz i7-4770 32GB 1TB SSD + 2 x 3TB 7200rpm RAID 1 HDD Windows 7 Professional...

Thing is, my current setup (Win 7 Ultimate, 6 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD with a 2.8 GHz cpu) is more than adequate for my simple needs: a bit of programming, web browsing, proofreading for pay, emailing.

So I've learned over the years to resist these urges and usually in 2-4 weeks they pass. How do you deal with them?

154
Thanks, Deozaan. I'm pushing my proofreading manuscripts to BitBucket right now...

156
I was thinking of using Mercurial to keep revision history of the various manuscripts I proofread for various Kindle authors. The image below shows a screen shot of the main directory, /manuscripts/ and the /.hg/ repository that I created for it with TortoiseHg Workbench. Here's my question. If I zipped that /.hg/ repo directory and uploaded it to my website, and then... say... a year later my hard drive crashed (assume I don't have backups on removable media), could I (a) download and unzip the /.hg/ repo and, (b) using cmdline or Workbench, reconstitute the original directories inside /manuscript/ ? If so, any brief explanation about how?

Also, it's worth mentioning that you can setup Free File Sync to backup files or directories/subdirectories to an FTP server. Not well-documented, though.

158
Free File Sync will meet criterion #2 if you choose the "keep revisions" option.

159
A buddy of mine over at moonlightingapp.com says someone needs a 5-page website worked on. Maybe 2-3 hours of work. Pays $100.00 (negotiable). If interested, you'll have to log an account and email Michael (admin).

160
Aha!

use:

/home/user/public_html/directory

161
Decided on WinSCP for FTP synch. But if anyone has FreeFileSync sFTP connection string clue, I'm still interested.

162
...<i>and</i> lost it, because after job ran last night, Win7 rebooted to install updates. Thought I'd saved the config data but ... grrrr...

163
Got it working. It's running right now. When it completes and I can access the right dialog, I'll report the path that worked.

164
Tried the following (all failed):

public_html/proofingDocs
williambryanmiller.com/public_html/proofingDocs
williambryanmiller.com/proofingDocs
proofingDocs

Tried the above four with trailing slash too. :(

165
[email protected] [~/public_html/proofingDocs]

is the value returned from the PWD command...

I DID move the folder into the /public_html/ directory...

166
Disregard putty question...

167
I have putty. Is there an equivalent comma to PWD?

168
Nope. Tried it barebones. Also tried with only the trailing slash, and with both a fore- and trailing slash.

169
Using Free File Sync and like it. Does great with local drives. Find and connects to my website okay via SFTP. However, I can't figure out how to correctly tell it where to look for the remote backup folder. I have a directory named /Proofreading/ that is located at the same level as .cpanel, public_ftp, public_html, etc. Anyone know how to fill in the info correctly in the circled area in the screenshot below?

I'm sure there's something out there that'll do what you need. Just dunno if it's free :D

http://www.softpedia...unter-Software.shtml ($19.99)
http://www.windows8d...r-software-wrxeurnh/ ($19.99)
http://www.windows8d...r-software-hdliylkl/ ($19.99)

The following claims to run in the background and constantly monitor typing and calculate WPM:

<b>This one looks promising, and is free:</b>

I'd use FreeFileSync and script it to run automatically:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/

This software is fantastic for backups, synchronization and version control. It can be installed "on local PC" or as "portable (USB drive)".

I tend to use it for Mirror backups.

You can create scripts for backups, and you can batch script multiple backups together if desired.

To create a backup script do the following:
 - Open FreeFileSync
 - Click on "Advanced" menu option
 - Click on "Create batch job..."

172
Consider this one DONE? Using the script myself. Good work

Can you give me an example of two or three strings and then the contents of a CSV file and how you'd want to apply those contents toward extraction/replacement of substrings?

If you can give me some real world examples, I might be able to tackle this for you, OP.

I did find that I liked a vintage version of MS Word for final setup of hypertext chapters and so on, for just before uploading to Amazon's Kindle Author Central, but just prefer O.O. 1.1.4 for daily use.

I'm with you, bit. I use Writer for all my document needs, both writing and proofreading.

kyrathaba, can you tell us more about Spunky exe? Did you write it yourself, or find it? Is there a web page for it or a video? More information on what it does, etc.?

It's an AHK script I wrote that incorporates some of the AutoCorrect.ahk script and has some additions of my own. Basically, it uses hotstrings and replaces some errors "on the fly" -- mainly misspellings.

The pseudonym choice for the other three books was due to concerns that family members would identify some themes/characters as being reflections of themselves, if they knew I was the author ;)

Branding is important, but after two years of dipping my toes in this writing industry, I think the majority of Kindle authors are posers, exaggerating their reported sales, etc.
