Living Room / New Smiley Requests
« on: June 17, 2006, 09:15 AM »
As the "Master of Smilies" I am feeling the need for a couple that I can't find.

1)  The $0.02 smiley.  It's just "my two cents" or "just a thought" that I want to convey.
2)  After having recently seen the badger dance, I feel compelled to request an "Eek Snake" smiley.

If anyone has any mad skills at creating these things, please get right on it.

Thanks
 :D

He he .... Badgers I've seen and like.  SNAKE!

The Annoying tune was... er... well... annoying.  :P

This is more of a discussion item, that a "left out" issue.  (Move it as you see fit)

RE: Advertising - I am absolutely for any advertising that can help offset costs @ DC.  I am absolutely against obnoxious ads, that 1) distract 2) impair viewing or 3) have nothing to do with software.

The Ads @ yahoo (and some other site) are terrible.  Float-by ads, Video Ads and frantic flashing ads should be avoided at all cost.  Pop-ups & Pop-unders should be illegal and their authors shot.

That said, Software Development Times has a lot of print examples of ads I like to see.  Stuff about SDK's, PDF Creators, Issue Tracking software, etc.  These things are on topic for the content I'm already reading.  Probably something done the way google ads are inserted now would be fine.

Oh, I know what prompted this post  ;)

It definitely put me on task.  I almost started this thread last week when nothing else was going on.   When I found out what "All your base.." was about, I started seeing it everywhere.  I just wonder what else I'm missing  ;D

There are so many "inside jokes" available on the 'Net today, I thought it might be fun to pool our resources in order to highlight some we might not all know about.

One of my favorites is this:  All your base are belong to us.

It comes from a bad Japanese game, that was so poorly translated, it became a cult classic.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_your_base_are_belong_to_us

Never under-estimate the stupidity of large crowds.  I'm totally serious about this.

It's amazing what "normally rational" people will do when they're in a crowd.  We've all see the same thing in email and forums.   People who normally wouldn't say "boo" start flame wars all the time.  Digg and similar sites can suffer from the same type crowd/email mentality.

Mouser, if you can find a control mechanism to stop the stupid and find the forgotten stuff, you'll do well.

Cool!  Lots of stuff going on @ DC.

Two weeks would be ok.  Weekly would get too routine for me...

General Software Discussion / Re: soft and hard links in ntfs
« on: June 14, 2006, 09:48 PM »
Rover: don't you actually mean that NTFS hardlinks are the equivalent of *u*x hardlinks? :) (if not using a protective program such as NTFSlink).

Btw., it was my impression that *u*x used reference counting for hardlinks, so that the data went pop only when you deleted the last filesystem entry referencing it?

Glad I check my stuff before I told you how wrong you are...cause you're not  :o
Somewhere I got it in my head wrong.  *nix hard links work just the the NTFS counter parts.... or visa versa.  ;D

So, yeah, f0dder, what you said.

[/offtopic]I never got it, why do people say *nix, of *u*x, or something else instead of unix?[/offtopic]

*nix, is short for Unix and/or Linux (including BSD, AT&T Unix, and Solaris).
In other words, very generic unix and not vendor specific.

General Software Discussion / Re: soft and hard links in ntfs
« on: June 14, 2006, 07:30 AM »
Hard link vs. soft link:  Under windows they're called hard links, it's the approx. equivalent of a soft link in *nix.
Consider:
c:\some_file
c:\stuff_I_Link\some_file (created as a link to c:\some_file)

Under Windows, if I delete either file, the other remains.  It's just another location in the NTFS structure.
Under *nix, (soft links) the link is always a link.  If I delete \stuff_I_Link\some_file, just the link will go.  If I delete \some_file, the link will remain, but will be "broken".  It will appear in the directory, pointing to nothing.

A *nix HARD link, is different.  It links the files in a way such that if you delete one, you delete both.  They are much less used. :)

One reason you might want to use NTFS hard links is in a network environment.  Say have a java application that many people use.  For some reason, your (stupid) java developers require that a .jar file be in the user's home directory.  So you either have #users*jar files running around, or you create an NTFS hard link to the jar file in everyones directory.  The effect is this, everyone can see the required file in the right place.  The file takes up the space only 1 time.

How's that?  ;)

As you can see from the graphic below, there was a serious lull in the posting activity here tonight.  Quite frankly, I am shocked  :o

Actually I was more just looking for some stuff to read  :P

Where is everyone?  Watching WCS w/ Mouser?  ;D

DonationCoder Projects / Re: DC Homebrew Mini-CMS Discussion
« on: June 12, 2006, 06:29 PM »
Conceptually, this is just a PHP wrapper around a directory structure, right?  The pain in the neck about writing a CMS is the User Interface stuff.  (At least to me it is)

From what I recall, you're proposing something like this:

A directory structure.....
/www/dc.com/html/mainsite/pages of stuff
/www/dc.com/html/non-published/pages of stuff
/www/dc.com/html/includes/ header, footer, css, images, etc.
/www/dc.com/html/admin/ admin programs to promote content, preview it, etc.

with a control php script to read and display requested pages, but not unpublished or removed pages.  Something like:
/www/dc.com/html/pager.php?page=/reviews/av-2006-04-01.php
That would read all of the mainsite directories and pages to create a link panel plus display the requested page.  Is that about right?

If you can live without WYSIWYG page creation, this should not be incredibly difficult....for someone else :)

Seriously, is this the concept?

Hey mouser, don't feel too bad.  Most americans just don't understand futbol.

I don't get too excited about it unless USA is doing much better than they did today and/or near the end.  :)

Thanks for the suggestions. Notify doesn't really fit my need want.  I just want to be able to go back a revisit some topics without having to search everything to find them.

I've waiting this long, when mouser gets the mod, I'll be ready

I feel like Dr. Suess  :D

Anyway, there are many cool threads that I would like to keep track of for future reference.  Is there any way to bookmark these within the forum?

I suppose I could create a folder and just bookmark the topics I want in my browser, but that seems kind of lame.

Thanks for your consideration  :)

wget is very cool.  I use a similar technique to check my router for my current IP address.  If it has changed, I launch an update script that updates all of my DDNS records.

wget is

Windows has a write delay "feature" for all drives.  The fine folks over at http://www.sysinternals.com have a neat utility called "sync" that will flush the delayed writes to disk.

There is a command line option that will flush all removealbe drives.  It has worked well for me.  YMMV.

Just brainstorming with you here....

How about if your blog the ability to subscribe to another blog via RSS?  That should be a pretty easy plug-in for just about any exisitng blog platform.  Then conversely you should be able to make certain article available via RSS.  I think most blog engines to that now.

Seems like a simple request.  I''ll be surprised if it doesn't already exist somewhere.

325
That has to be the STUPIDEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!

OK, I'm just kidding.  It was really a lot of fun.  I just hate to be the "me too" guy.  ;D
