My question is: Why do they play those audio ads on some sites where you can neither turn off the sound or even turn it down. The only thing I can do is mute the system until I navigate away. Which really annoys me if I listening to music.

Does anyone know how to mute Firefox?

At least YouTube and Myspace let you turn down the sound easily enough

Living Room / Re: Winamp 5.53 Release
« on: May 09, 2008, 10:00 AM »
Personally I have 5.5 and use it for most media. I just want something which can browse my library and play songs in any format.
What I miss is a really light player for one song at a time if I just want to see what a sound file is. Sort of having a picture viewer instead of opening Picasa every time.
But Winamp suits me alright. Early versions were no good at browsing/searching the library.

The only problem with killing the process is that Messenger's tray icon stays visible (until you hover it with your mouse). At least that's what it does on my XP.
Common problem with XP, I often end up with tray icons which have to be moused away. Once ended up with 3 network connections when only one was running (and slowly at that :)

Vista problems:
Was reading a bit about them on Ask Leo the other day. Try a reinstall of Vista. This isn't just the usual "try rebooting advice", retailers are finding that they have to reinstall Vista as a pre-delivery on all computers since otherwise they have way to many fail like you are describing.

The article is pretty recent on www.ask-leo.com, so it should be easy to find. Hope that helps.

Another Aussie here,
We dropped the 1 and 2 cent coins a while back, and the canny amongst us collected the old coins, knowing that they only need a hole in them to become the cheapest copper washers out there.
As for our notes, I noticed that within the last few years, we have had 3 different $5 notes, but the differences were pretty small and not many saw it.

Thing is, I remember reading somewhere that you can wreak havoc with some forms of email by changing the user's computer date. This is probably an outdated prank, but it worked somehow and the email was delivered lower down the stack if the date was older.

I still saw the joke about 3 lines down though. Good joke, but I still reckon last year's was a corker (anyone remember Gmail Paper)

I join all others in condemming the attack and saying a big thank you to Mouser, gothic, and all others who got it back on its feet. And while I'm at it: a big thank you to all who run this site even when all is smooth.

Living Room / MySpace spam
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:46 AM »
Hi,
I recently started getting into this time waster that is MySpace, and have noticed plenty of spammy comments in others profiles.
Can anyone tell me what good they do.
I mean, if you click on a link to a 'picture', what do they know, and what will they do.
Obviously when they ask for an email, they are address harvesting, but in other click throughs I can't see the point.

Hey, when they ask for an email to example.hotmail.com, would it do any good to sign that address up to a known spam list. Revenge is sweet.

Living Room / Re: Tell me why I have to be a PowerSlave?
« on: December 25, 2007, 07:01 PM »
Considering that my laptop uses about 60w maximum (rated on the sticker on the bottom, not measured), I think that is quite a significant power saving.  Very neccessary in an alternative household, we rely on solar power which is not very forgiving on cloudy days.

« on: July 19, 2007, 06:40 AM »
Thanks for your help,
Actually I have now found that I was just too blind to see the button in Picasa which does what I want. It can automatically resize pictures when it exports them to temp folder.
Easy when you know how, the problem is that I never have the time to fully learn all the habits of my programs, it wasn't in the right-click menu so I finished looking.
My mistake,

Thanks anyway.

Post New Requests Here / Idea: Automatic Photo resizer
« on: July 18, 2007, 06:41 AM »
Just like most people, I have a large supply of photos on my computer. These are in good quality (about 3mb). To send one in an email, I have to find it, copy it to a temporary location, resize it, and then send it.
Could someone please write a hotkey program which ideally links into Picasa2 and copies the selected image to a temporary position (say desktop) and resizes it to a standard size. And most importantly, doesn't hurt the original.

Maybe use a screen capture of the image with the desktop coordinates in the right spot, then automatically save it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The roos just got scribbled out and the same would probably happen to all the other animals.

Then again, the same would probably happen to our army too. Maybe we could send some rusted out submarines (local joke). We just have to issue an international statement that no country is to wage naval war against us until however many years in the future.

Come to think of it, just tell them not to bother with us at all, we aren't really worth it,

Thats our entire defence policy, very cheap.

« on: June 05, 2007, 05:11 AM »
Got it now. thanks
I have to type in the directory right from C:\.
I was sure I tried that before but I think I must have been using / by accident because I remember it used to run out of room for letters which it isn't doing now.
Also it doesn't work to select, say, My Documents and then add \<directory>, the whole address needs to be put in.

So now I have exactly what I was after originally. Thanks everybody  :D

PS I have no idea who should get the credit for the picture I use as an avatar. I got it in an email  of funny pictures. It was entitled "How to tell if you spend too much time on your computer".

Its me in the future.

It doesn't work for me. I tried that straight away and it would let me type in whatever I wanted, it even made a button for me, but nothing happens when I click on it.
Is there any special syntax that needs to be used?

Thanks

Back again. I have been struck down with the flu for the last few days, that'll teach me to make light of pagan customs.

But, the good news is..........I got it working. I did a safe-mode cleanup (it was due for one anyway) and even though nothing major was found, it seems to work now. And the problem was in the downloading, not the unzipping; the file I downloaded earlier still won't work.

I still haven't started seriously playing around with it yet, but when I do I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks for your help,
God bless

PS the unsupported compiler I (try to) use is Bloodshed Dev-C++. Its best feature is that its free. Also it comes with a good tutorial. (and I still can't use it :( )

243
I've tried downloading from 2 different browsers, I've tried downloading the earlier version, I've tried downloading the source code but then I realised that my compiler isn't supported by that widgets add-on, or whatever it is, which is needed, and I'm not sure if I should get another compiler just for this program. I only got the the other one to try to inspire me to learn coding but it never got off the ground, but thats beside the point.

Anyway it looks like chooks and incantations may be called for, but with my luck, they won't work either.

Thanks for your very useful suggestion

I can't get it to install on XP. I downloaded the zip file but it Windows wouldn't extract it (unexpected end of file).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Living Room / Re: Why don't you pay for software?
« on: May 27, 2007, 05:36 AM »
I haven't got any easy way of paying for software on the net, so, if I can't get it free, I can't get it at all. Therefore I am not lessening anyone's income by using free/pirate software.
When I get rich I will return the favor to those who gave me the free software. To those which were pirated, well, if they want to act like a business, then I will too: they get paid if I need their software for commercial reasons but thats all.

That is better than filebox extender because it doesn't need to have anything running in the tray; the only problem with it is that it is only customiseable to the limited amount of folders that it lets you choose from.
Is there any way to make it add custom folders?

thanks

Are you aware that you can locate every image and movie located on your hard drive by just using the windows search function? Did you know that, especially if you use Internet Explorer, Windows keeps an easily retrievable record of many of your usernames and passwords to almost any website (including banking websites), whether or not you save your password manually?
Is this still the case with IE7? I take it the guy is referring to the index.dat?

Take a look at www.fuckmicrosoft.com and look at all that is stored and not too hard to get to, if you know how. I haven't tried it so I can't tell you if its still applicable, maybe someone else with more spare time can answer for us.

You all seem to be limited to dogs and cats (and one wife).
Ever seen a minature shetland pony play with a set of spanners while you're trying to fix the lawnmower that broke down in the middle of the paddock? He plays with anything, especially if it is easily lost or broken, and preferably hard to replace.

Macs are ok; its the people who come with them that are the problem. Does anyone know how I can write a small 'virus' for a mac, just to tell my friend "click on this button labeled 'I will never again tell you that Macs are that much better than PCs' or I won't go away?

Thanks heaps for the links. Filebox Extender works excellent. I would recommend it for anyone else who is looking for something like that. It saves a lot of time.
