Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Auto-push/pull clipboarder?
« on: October 19, 2010, 02:38 PM »

The Advanced Clipboard Manager is a Windows-based clipboard management utility. ACM comes with a slim and sleek graphical interface, which can be conveniently placed anywhere on the desktop. It manages all of your recently used copied content and places them in an easy-to-use toolbar. Retrieving stored content is as simple as moving your mouse cursor over the numbered toolbar buttons (called 'slots', to preview) and clicking (to select/paste). For advance use, ACM offers the textbox, which allows users to execute advanced commands such as search, join, delete and file I/O. ACM also allows execution of chain commands, which allow you to execute multiple commands in series: for instance, the command "sj" shows the content of all the slots and then joins them together, ready to paste.

Living Room / Re: Desktop Linux: The dream is dead
« on: October 18, 2010, 06:03 PM »
My recent, last six months, experiences with Linux have been very enjoyable. Previously, 1995-2005, I had a terrible time, mostly with hardware detection problems. I found Ubuntu okay but limited for what I wanted to do. KNOPPIX is great and Puppy, 'lupu-500', is even better. The group on the Puppy forum is great. I like the concept of a simplified OS with selectable extras. The ability to recompile a CD or USB for a specific job is nice. I liked DOS and Windows 2000 Pro but I don't like Windows XP. I'm just waiting for something like MASM to merge with Linux 'Live'.

CodeTRUCKER,
Re. "...vast array of possible vocations...":
I found the book, "Dictionary of Occupational Titles" very helpful for specifics.
Obviously, the vast majority of occupations can be ignored or dismissed. The
trick is to narrow the field and offer new alternatives for choices.

Re. "...online evaluation tool...", "...create what I need...":
Interests -
- expressed interests of children and adolescents don't provide useful predictive measures.
- - They are usually very limited in scope and/or unrealistic - 'hockey player' 'game designer'.
- - There are trivial and spectacular rare exceptions - 'wanted to be an astronomer since age five'.
- measures: scientific; social welfare; literary; concrete (things vs people); record-keeping;
  social contact; artistic.
- actual experience would be expected to have more weight than expressed interests.
- an online interest inventory could, in theory, produce a 'self-perception' that might be compared
to that of others. [I'm not aware of published lists of interests by occupation.]
Caution: The relationship between activities and interests is very weak. It is widely believed,
but unreliable to assume, that a person does what he likes because he is good at it.

Re.  "...further offer questionnaires...":
Selection for job openings, admission to higher education and the higher-valued training programs
seems to be increasingly dependent on evaluations of social activities and past experience. If you
could get access to the weighing schemes used it might provide the basis for other forms.

superboyac,
Re. "Can anyone recommend anything?"
I believe WordPerfect can do everything you asked for and a *lot* more. Most people seem to think the learning curve is not worth it. I'll make a list of everything it can do with numbering text lists if you think that might help. There is also a good help forum <wordperfectuniverse> and macros at <barrymacdowalls toolbox>. Cheers

There is an interesting article in the October 2010, issue 119, Linux Pro
magazine that describes an approach to note-taking as used in the Emacs
extension Org-Mode. <orgmode.org> I bet a similar *really streamlined*
approach would work using a good database app or word processing app.

Living Room / Re: How much soda (pop) do you drink?
« on: October 11, 2010, 05:46 PM »
Now it is about twenty ounces of pop per year. I never liked sweets much. My downfall was fats, probably inherited from Irish and Scottish ancestors. When I lived in Miami and the Keys for seven years everything was highly consumed. My wife hates fat so she has saved me there. *ALL* of my relatives have a problem with weight and I can't help thinking fat is the main cause for them. Calories matched to activity levels work for me.

Hi CodeTRUCKER,

Testing must be done by mutual agreement for jointly established purposes.
[The person being tested must want it.] Vocational counseling needs to be
between a person trained in counseling, with knowledge of occupational
information, and a person who can discuss their aspirations, abilities,
interests and plans. As a bare minimum, you need to know aptitudes,
interests, personality, intelligence and proficiency. Some battery tests,
such as those used by government employment services, measure
aptitude and intelligence. You need to avoid making a mistake based on
partial or incomplete information. The best hope of getting help is from a
Professional Psychologist specializing in vocational matters. Other help
may be received from government employment services, school guidance
departments and private employment services but you should check the
qualifications and reputations carefully.

For background information see:
Super, D. E., & Crites, J. O. (1962). Appraising vocational fitness (2nd ed.).
New York: Harper & Bros.

If you still want to take on this difficult task, and have other questions, let
me know and I'll try to dig up answers. My first full-time job was as a
Vocational Specialist with the Federal Government decades ago.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to create algorithm graphs
« on: September 26, 2010, 05:16 PM »
One *very* easy way to make something like that is with Microsoft Publisher. My licensed copy is 2003 and with that you select "Design Gallery", "Attention Getters", "Dot Attention Getter". The location on the page, color, size and text can all be easily changed. Hope that helps. Cheers

Living Room / Re: Looking for Refrigerator Magnets that work
« on: September 26, 2010, 03:33 PM »
I use salvaged doughnut shaped magnets from old microwave ovens for fridge magnets. They work best if covered in cloth or paper. They work for holding kitchen knives to the back of my electric range too.

1. Create shortcuts to your files.
2. Place the shortcuts on your desktop and open them.
3. Open the file that you want to process and drag selections to the opened files.

mwfuss,
I like Advanced Clipboard Manager for merging clips but it needs Java 1.6. After <Ctrl+c>ing them you can type "s" "j" [select all and join] .and hit <RETURN> and all of the clips can be pasted in open windows with <Ctrl+v>
Cheers

hulkbuster,
If you have MS-DOS v5 as a stand-alone operating system, independent from any other operating system and not in Windows, you can easily upgrade to MS-DOS v6 by obtaining a set of MS-DOS v6 install floppy disks. Just insert the first disk and follow the instructions. After MS-DOS is installed, you can use a MS-DOS v6.22 "upgrade" floppy disk to upgrade to MS-DOS v6.22. This will give you Norton Commander and RAMDRIVE. Searching online for DOS commands should give you a list of new or changed DOS commands. I agree that "APPEND.COM" can be useful.

I use WordPerfect. Master documents, sub-documents, linking, XML, preview, searching.

This solves an email problem I have had: how to keep my actual email address private while still communicating information.
www.akapost.com I did not want to post my email address on forums and message boards but I wanted to send information to some posters without replying publicly to their posts. An example post was asking for the names of their ancestors' parents. Many forums send messages on, without divulging the recipient's address, but I wanted the poster to be able to contact me to get more information, and still stay safe. It should make filtering emails or deleting some at the source easier.

Title:Firefox extension to copy plain text with URLs? - DonationCoder.com
Source:https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=21971.0
Clip:I assumed that meant that if you copied a section of a page containing a number of URLs, it wouldn't include both the text and the URL itself.  Is that so?

It is very fast and convenient. I set up my copy to show, "Accessed, Title, Source and Clip" but that can be changed. I use this to grab clips and to save where I got them. I save them to Advanced Clipboard Manager, but any clip capture should work. I've used ClipMate and Keynote to auto-capture with good results. For capturing multiple links within Firefox, I like the Firefox add-on, "Quicknote". You can add personal notes to that too. Any questions?

166
I use Firefox add-on "QuoteURLText" for this. The last time I looked at it, it was good for Firefox v1.5 to v3

To grow, a service, product or group should provide perceived value for time spent and it should be seen as different from the alternatives. Rolls Royce bragged that it did not need to advertise and that was a mistake. Spreading the word about something of value is worthwhile. There are some good things on other sites that might help, such as asking if the visitor found what they were looking for or if there are any suggestions about wanted features, navigation or help. Some feedback about which topics should be expanded, divided or followed might be interesting. I did not get why the topic of 'Cheat Sheets' seemed to 'die on the vine'.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone still using WordPerfect?
« on: January 05, 2010, 04:05 PM »
Their marketing is not strong. I believe their product is excellent and worth every penny. I use earlier versions, up to v12. WordPerfect Universe and Barry McDowell's Toolbox show some features and have links to other uses. Tables, columns, searching files, very large page sizes, indexing, macros, master documents, file lists and reveal codes are some of my favorites. If you have something that you would like it to do, I'll try to locate the help file or method. There is a reason why law firms, government, universities and writers prefer WordPerfect. It works very well.

General Software Discussion / Re: Special Clipboard
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:01 PM »
Contro,
I use another clip capture application called Advanced Clipboard Manager. Any one should hold your, " - ", spacers, if that is what you are using it for, along with Clipmate. You can also just use a second or third copy of Windows WordPad on your desktop. You could have a lot of, " space, hyphen, space", sets and just paste in the word or words between the sets, from a copy of your original in one of the copies of WordPad, or to ClipMate, depending on what you find best.

The relatives have a farm/greenhouse outside of town that grows Cactus plants. I can't give any personal details.

Question:
Steven
Topic: Firefox - new window - can you remember the google search you opened with
« on: Today [Thu Sep 24 2009] at 08:49:35 AM »
However I forgot which search it was ! hmmm .  Any extensions or tricks to overcome this ?
Keep that search somewhere .. e.g. in the Find: bar when the window returns or a special
little view area... toggle searches without retyping and remembering as I go over pages.

Short reply:
This works for me. 1) Use Google Advanced Search, 2) highlight and save [copy "Ctrl-C"]
the box above the 'fill-in' boxes. Example: Firefox "capture searches" save OR store OR list ,
3) save these in any convenient place, 4) past them back into Google.

Detailed reply:
 1) Use Google Advanced Search, 2) highlight and save [copy "Ctrl-C"]
the box above the 'fill-in' boxes. Example: Firefox "capture searches" save OR store OR list ,
[ I use Advanced Clipboard Manager to save clips to numbered (1 to 19) buttons that are
always visible and the contents can be easily viewed.], 3) save these in any convenient place.
[ If I need more than 19 saved clips per session, I save them to a 'form' I made, that I keep on
the desktop, by saved number.], 4) to reuse the search, put the pointer in the Google box for,
"All the words" and paste the selected search there. ACM does this automatically when you
click on the box number, 5) click on "Advanced search".

Re. "...Keep that search somewhere...?:
I save good/old searches to file by date. I save current/useful searches with the Firefox add-on,
"QuoteURLtext" but CAUTION, it only works on Firefox v1.5 to v3. Copy needed ones to ACM
for easiest use.

Contro,
I don't know the, "Ditto" application. I have used ClipMate version 5 on older Windows and I like it a lot. Let me know if you have questions.
My wife has two cousins on Tenerife working with Cactus. I can't use names for privacy reasons. One visited here in Northern British Columbia a few years ago.

I find having FireFox v2 on another box handy. You can buy a copy of it on a CD from On-Disk [on-disk.com] for under four dollars if you can't find yours.

General Software Discussion / Re: Special Clipboard
« on: September 18, 2009, 05:14 PM »
Contro,

Try Clipmate not sure about adding, " - ".

Advanced Clipboard Manager does that. It needs Java 6 and will store highlighted and 'Ctrl-c' and you can copy the, " - " from anywhere for a 'spacer'. Then you can enter, "sj" and "ENTER" to combine all in one continuous file. Then, "Ctrl-v" anywhere you want to paste it.

If you have WordPerfect, there is a macro named, "Clipper" that does all you want automatically and the 'spacer' can be set by you.

Windows Clipboard should work but it will need more clicking and pasting than the other methods.

KeyNote will automatically copy selections.

I got an USB to serial [ nine pin male ] cable to do this from a box with Win 98 SE to Toshiba laptop XP. I have WinLink 2000 that says it can use serial ports. If your laplink documentation says it can connect to serial ports this might be an easy,low-tech solution. I have not tested this.
