General Software Discussion / Re: POP Mail checker
« on: September 24, 2008, 05:25 AM »
PopPeeper, been using for many years now, small and reliable :)

Just tried it. Nice, probably reliable, and small for download, but consuming over 200 MB of RAM with a single account, and even with its main window closed seems to me too much. The full Outlook 2003 takes usually 20 MB, occasionally 30 MB maximum. Or is there any option for this?

General Software Discussion / Re: Unlocker 1.8.7 released - 01/05/2008
« on: September 23, 2008, 03:30 PM »
Weird, indeed. It happened on ALL my three installations, and I'm not the only one. Maybe an updated installer? Anyway, it's not that big issue to lose more time with it. I just wanted to inform others, because I suddenly discovered the eBay shortcut (I don't have any icons on desktop, it just appeared in FARR window), and became suspicious from where it appeared.

I just discovered what is already known, but was never mentioned on DC, so here it is:

- Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those.

On all systems I installed the new version I experienced the problem described here:

The problem with this version is that it installs a program called eBayShortcut.exe. The installer even gives you the option to deselect this but unfortunately it gets installed anyways. What makes it worse is that it is not uninstalled correctly by the installer which is a big problem.

I can confirm this, of course I unchecked the "eBay shortcuts", but it was installed anyway (on WinXP twice and once on Vista).

The batch file published on the mentioned site or here for removing this stuff works, but I still found another instance of this file at C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\AD ON Multimedia\eBay Shortcuts\.

It's probably harmless, but this a reliable and fast way how to destroy a good reputation of otherwise extremely useful application.

None at all. I'm able to make fool of myself much easier way.

Anyone tried OpenDrive? 1 GB at the moment, but looks promising. Not mentioned at DC so far.

urlwolf:

I'm glad my research was not vain. However, for me it was enough to disable one not used protocol, not the whole WLAN card. And I'm very satisfied with Dell, except for this case and the case with the "software" sound card.

At the moment I'm quite happy with FolderShare. It's for free and you can have up to ten synchronized "libraries" of up to 10.000 files. What I like about it is the fact that this is not a remote storage, just sync service. The advantage is that when both the computers are on the same LAN, they are connected peer-to-peer, so you can sync many gigabytes in a couple of minutes, which would be impossible via internet.

I only had slight problems with Excel files ever changing theirs timestamps (described here).

For this reason and for the case of any other disaster I'm running on one of the computers FileHamster, which keeps automatically different versions of important files.

This setup is not suitable for every situation, but it works completely unattended, reliably and doesn't cost me a dime. Hope this helps.

To urlwolf:

I also have Dell Inspiron 1720, but with Vista Business, and my latency was occasionally measured about 1 ms, usually .25 ms. However, if you experience crackling sound on this PC, there's a known, but very strange advice:

In Device Manager choose the 802.11n WLAN Mini Card, On the Advanced Tab choose Disable Bands from the list. In the dropdown choose Disable 802.11a.

Quite weird, but it really helped in my case. Some interrupt collision, perhaps... More on this at http://forums.micros...2&PostID=1373474.

General Software Discussion / Re: New version: Copernic Desktop Search 3
« on: September 13, 2008, 03:54 PM »
It depends on what you need. For me the NEAR operator is the must, so as far as I know, in the freeware rank there are no other alternatives. Anyway, if Copernic 2.3 runs under Vista, which I didn't try yet, there's no need to switch.

General Software Discussion / Re: Mouse Gestures
« on: September 13, 2008, 03:14 PM »
No, I'm not using FireFox, I was investigating these programs because of Chrome. As for IE, I'm using IE7pro, which has very good mouse gestures for IE7.

Now, to the flipping issue: In the meantime I discovered that my favorite application HotkeyP I'm using for assigning tasks to different keys, can easily create a macro for this flipping, too. Alas, flipping from left to right works well, but from right to left collides with both StrokeIt and gMote.

Couldn't this be accomplished using AutoHotKey?

If anyone is interested, there's a new free application for mouse gestures, which unlike StrokeIt works fine under Vista: gMote. Works well with Google Chrome, too. Unfortunately, it also lacks flip back/forward actions.

It looks to me like they've removed the ability to index network drives (amongst other things). That's a big minus in my book.

Not only this, but these are gone also (in the free version):

  • Save searches
  • Display search results as you type

Also, ads are to be expected in the free version, as the item "No advertisement" is unchecked.

So, this is not for me. No substantial improvements, and if I want similar capabilities as I have now, I'd have to pay $50. No way. Gonna stick with the current version as long as possible and then switch to something else.

Here's the correct link: http://r2.com.au/sof...&show=startdelay

And of course, you can easily enable/disable individual starting applications. You can even run it in interactive mode and decide during startup which apps you don't want to load.

Highly recommended. Since I'm using it I managed to get rid of many startup troubles.

264
That's terrific, mouser! Thanks a lot. I can confirm it's working now perfectly in:
  • IE7pro 2.3
  • Opera 9.52
  • Google Chrome 0.2.149.29

General Software Discussion / Re: Yet another Hotkey app!
« on: September 08, 2008, 04:09 PM »
Thanks for heads up, anyway, there's a new version available. I was using Hotkeyz previously and referred about it in this forum, too. If somebody is interested in these applications, I later switched to HotkeyP, which is faster, lighter on resources and in my opinion has more capabilities. It just lacks the option of creating application specific shortcuts, which I don't need. On the other hand, unlike Hotkeyz, it can easily handle special media keys.

I can't resist to add my view. It's not new, it was taken in October a couple of years ago, but the view remains the same, just the light was exceptional then.

May I ask the previous contributors to edit theirs posts and add at least basic geographical information? Most of you probably know each other's personal details, but for me it's not always obvious.

To set an example, here are my details: Czech Republic, Praha, part Koloděje, view taken southward. For interested Google Earth users here are the coordinates of the location: 50° 3'53.37"N, 14°38'16.49"E.

I thought you were speaking about Locate32, sorry. I've never had any issue of this type with Copernic, though. "AND" is default there, no need to type it.

269
Also, I am still not certain exactly how he set up its Boolean operations. If you just type in three or four words, it searches as "ANY" and brings back far too many words.

Settings > Advanced > check "Use AND mode as a default"

It should be ON by default, IMHO.

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: OCR & paste
« on: August 17, 2008, 02:34 AM »
It looks like JOCR requires Msoffice to be installed? I do nto have it and it gives me error.

You're right, I completely forgot it, sorry. From the website:

JOCR requires Microsoft Office 2003 or higher version.

Anyway, for MS Office users it's quite useful tool.

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: OCR & paste
« on: August 17, 2008, 02:08 AM »
I would love to have a program which would allow me to select part of my screen, perform OCR on it and copy the recognized text to the clipboard.

I'm using for this purpose JOCR. Not very new, not always 100 % reliable, but free, simple and does what it's supposed to.

272
So far it looks that we two just confirmed each other's opinion that there's no real, affordable and reliable solution. Hope someone else joins...

273
Just a small link correction: Systweak's Advanced Email Utilities;)

Thanks!

274
Exactly. I didn't dare to experiment with my precious data, because I know how the PST file is fragile, so at the moment I'm quite happy with a remote access to my Outlook via LogMeIn. Not suitable for every situation, but I really enjoy it and use it on a regular basis. And it's free.

275
Sorry, I don't have any solution, but I did some research recently, too, and ended up on this page. Hope that helps. I didn't choose any, the apps are either expensive or not suitable for my needs, though.
