Thanks all for these directions.  In the mean time, I also found an interesting but not free software, Flashboot (http://www.prime-expert.com/).

Regarding the type of bootable CD I'd like to convert, they are of all kinds : WinPE, BartPE, DOS, but generally not Linux.

I also just tried yesterday UBCD4win, which solves the problem I had with BartPE CD on a SATA notebook, now it would be great to "USBize" it.

Thanks, I thought I registered it the way you indicated, but I may have missed something.

Regarding Office compatibility itself, I have found something a bit annoying when you go from Excel to Kingsoft and back : I had a sheet where I have the excel formula for multiplying one matrix by another.  I opened the sheet without any apparent pb with Kingsoft, the resulting matrix of the product was ok, excep it was now static, and just the values had been kept, so any change in the multiplied matrix would have no effect.  Since there is no warning, it's a bit of a problem...

Anyway, for people that don't need to use both suites, it looks like a nice product.

The English version of WPS called Kingsoft Office has been released and it's free.
Go download it at http://www.kingsoftresearch.com :D
After installation, the license manager says it's only free for 30 days ???

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a freeware that can convert a bootable CD into a bootable USB key ?  I have the feeling that just copying the file won't work (I didn't try yet).

Thanks.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Macrium Reflect Backup Program
« on: June 20, 2008, 07:04 AM »
I finally uninstalled this app : every two times or so, the application hang while imaging my disk.  My PC even froze while using the WinPE recovery disk, and last time one of my partitions was corrupted, it took me quite some time to fix it.

Too bad since it really looked promising and full of good ideas.

Merle,

so basically you are not saying you need it to functionally behave any differently, you justmiss the brief highlighting of the result before it is launched, is that right?  It's only the brief highlighting visual feedback that you are wanting back?

Exactly, this visual feedback helps me confirm I made the right selection.  In some cases, it has helped me to perform specific actions when I realized I had not chosen the right program (like waiting for the chosen program to load and not leave my seat...).  That would be wonderful if you could put it back (possibly as an option if other people don't like it).

Thanks !

757
Thanks for the hint.  It doesn't change on my current system at work.  Will try on my home PC tonight.  Maybe FARR2 is so much faster than V1 that the brief highlight is lost before the desired app starts ?

Find And Run Robot / Small request about FARR 2 (last version)
« on: June 18, 2008, 03:46 AM »
I finally made the jump and upgraded yesterday from V1 to V2 !!!  I like a lot the new version, but I am missing one small thing : formerly, when the search results where displayed and when I pressed Enter, the top of the list item was launched.  Now it is the same behaviour *but* the entry is no longer highlighted, same thing when I press [1-9] to select one of the first nine entries, before it was highlighted.  I realize I was looking at this.  Is there a way to have this back ?

Thanks !

Hmm... It is a little strange that you already can have the 2008 burner this way, because I pre-purchased it some weeks ago and am still waiting for the link to the final and official version - due in two weeks time from now.

Anyway, the 2008 burner is *ALMOST* the only new program on Raymond's list (not really, but some are already freeware versions or even abandoned), but the 2008 burner is certainly worth this price!
I just downloaded and installed the 2008 version : it's a cut down version, even poorer than Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.  I think you actually bought Burning Studio 8 which actually is different from Burning Studio 2008.  So Ashampoo is not giving away free versions of its next release.

Found Deals and Discounts / Macrium Reflect Backup Program
« on: June 16, 2008, 02:21 PM »
There is an excellent deal, apparently, on GAOTD this monday : a file backup  + diskimaging program, which includes Linux Recovery CD, BartCD Plugin and WinPE ($5 extra) recovery CD.  It's called Macrium Reflect.  It looks like Acronis, in its principle, with many interesting features.

I suggest you download it and activate it ASAP.

I took the offer, and also got TurboDemo for free, listed price €200. I wish I also had $50 for their last offer, AllCapture, listed price €169. Nice programs, really! Updated for Vista but otherwise properly almost abandoned - well, I don't know, but their offers really are mysteriously low priced!

Actually I also took the offer, but I didn't see the TurboDemo for free, only the GAOTD offer which has a similar name, TurboDemo Album.  Can I ask how the free TurboDemo was proposed ?
Thanks !

There is also a funny competition to win free licenses :

Remember Nero ? ;)

PPTMinimizer reduces powerpoint and word files without losing the information...  Pretty impressive with some big ppt, whose size is due to pictures that have been included.

Living Room / Re: Opera 9.5
« on: June 14, 2008, 10:37 AM »
I have been a long time user of Opera.  I recently updated to 9.5, but one one PC, it crashes as soon as I right click on a page.  And it is not that easy to revert to the previous version (9.27) since some data files (mail related) are modified by the installation.  I had to use a full backup of the program folder to have 9.27 work again.  On other machines, it has problems with Metaproducts Inquiry : the right click menu item used to save a page is no longer working.  Hopefully Metraproducts will find a fix soon.

For the moment I rely a lot on K-Meleon, a trimmed-down version of Mozilla which is surprisingly fast.  Maybe as fast as Opera.

Well, for the French soccer team in Euro 2008 that was certainly a bad day (lost 4-1 against Holland)...

I always manually clean virus/malware  ;D

Most ppl visit lenovo for Thinkpad laptops, right?  ;D

I personally rely on SuperAntiSpyware, which I found quite "professional".  And yes I confess I have a Lenovo Thinkpad  ;)

I installed a previous version some time ago, it was at that time quite rudimentary but OK.  I have now switched to AJC Backup (http://www.ajcsoft.com/index.php), which I find very clever, but more expensive than this free offer.

You may try a newly released freeware : http://www.ntfs.com/disk-monitor.htm
It offers SMART analysis and Surface Scan.

HDTune is also a tool you may try (also freeware).

771
I'd like to add that UD 2008 is actually very very close to the now freeware V1.72, so I suggest installing first the free version, and also the demo for the 2008 version and compare.  The difference is really little (small ?).

And for a simple yet efficient and quick defragmenter, there is always PuranDefrag 4.5.  For those who don't want to spend their computer life in looking for the best parameters ;)

772
Just a reminder MerleOne... $7.5 to optimize XP NTFS Drive access : rip-off or not ?  ;)

Would you still deal with such a company?

I must admit I had completely forgotten that ! But even so, since it is a freeware, I see no moral problem in downloading, installing it and even recommend it !

773
http://www.disktrix.com/UDFree.htm

A disk defragmenter with many possibilities.  I personally prefer PuranDefrag 4.5 from PuranSoftware but it is a nice tool at that price !

Hmm, this brings back found memories from my stay in Denmark some 22 years ago (already!) when I spent nine month in "Koebenhavn" (don't know to have the "o + /" character).  I was there again, in 2006, in Aarhus then Aalborg, on the year where heat was unbearable in Europe, even in Aalborg.  Only when we got to Loekken and the long sand beach there, then jumped into the sea, we got finally some coolness.

I won't be able to join this time of year, hopefully next time.  Too bad. Anyway, thanks for the proposal and for this small instant of nostalgia.
