General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ideal backup utility
« on: October 08, 2008, 04:26 AM »
I think there is also a new  contender in the area : TK8 Backup (http://www.tk8.com/backup/), pro version preferably.  It's a new product but very promising, in particular it has a very quick backup engine.  I like the straightforward interface and the direct management of saved files.  However, IMHO, this software is still lacking some important features such a verify, especially when burning on DVD.  Future versions could be nice.  I purchased a license through Bitsdujour rebate some months ago.

MerleOne: how does it do it's job? Filter Driver, or filesystem notifications?
I would bet on filesystem notification, since there is no special service/driver running AFAIK, but the developer should probably be asked.

This thread reminds me of an excellent real-time backup software called AJC Backup where versionning is very nicely done.  Versions are saved in a proprietary compressed (or not) format which is very efficient at storing multiple versions of a same file.  I may have 20 versions of an .xls file and the archive is 70% of the size of the last xls file.

Backup is updated as soon as a file is saved.

General Software Discussion / Re: Kingsoft Office
« on: September 28, 2008, 02:36 PM »
I tried a few weeks ago KSO 2009 and 2007.  The last version, 2009, is more Office compatible : I was able to load some excel worksheet that had some formulas that didn't load in the 2007 version.

BUT there is one major drawback for the moment : spell checking is in English only.  So I'll stay with Softmaker 2008.

General Software Discussion / Re: Excellent RSS reader
« on: September 24, 2008, 08:20 AM »
lol, funny you should mention google reader. That is what I use. I also used to install readers, but I finally switched.
Maybe, but I did try first Google Reader and I simply don't use it anymore : too confusing.  After a few days/weeks without looking at it there are so many messages that I don't read any of them.  With a local RSS reader I tend to be more selective since I know it will take some part of my HDD.

General Software Discussion / Excellent RSS reader
« on: September 24, 2008, 06:46 AM »
Hi,

I recently discovered FeedDemon from Newsgater which is freeware.  There is one feature I'd like to mention because it is really there that this software shines : if you create a simple account on Newsgator (username+passwd, no e-mail required!) you can sync all your PC where feeddemon is installed so that you share RSS streams and also which items have been read.  There are many other features, I would really advise those who look for a nice RSS reader to have a look.

Found Deals and Discounts / Metaproducts Inquiry basic freeware released

This excellent software from Metaproducts that helps saving web pages in full is now freeware in its basic edition from http://www.metaprodu...ry_Basic_Edition.htm

It's very basic compared to the standard payware version, but it's still nice IMHO.

Very impressive !  Thanks for reporting this event.

Otaku software has a nice Multidesktop software, but not free.  It's called Deskspace : http://www.otakusoft...deskspace/index.html

I rely on Dexpot and before I used VirtualWin which I found quite stable compared to other solutions.

Living Room / Lost URL for website that helps fight SPAM
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:58 AM »
Hi all,

I just realized I cannot recall the URL of a website that offers the following free service : the website has a name I cannot remember, say it's www.nomorespam.com.  If you go to the URL, you define any (long) character string, say  "my_new_address", then if someone sends an e-mail to "[email protected]", you can read the email simply by entering the above string "my_new_address" on the website URL.  So you can create very easily one-time e-mail address you may use for registering on some websites and downloading demos without revealing your true e-mail.

Can anyone help me find this website again !  Thanks.

Update : I just found it again, using "one time email" on google...  It's http://www.mailinator.com/

Living Room / Re: DVD Drive eject issues
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:00 AM »
the poster in that thread could have elaborated on the DLA software, however a wiki search returned this article but i'm not sure whether it applies to your Pioneer drive.

interestingly, one of the "Known Issues":
DLA may prevent eject of media from an optical drive. If this is the case you need to restart your operating system.

I too have DLA on my system, and when I encounter an ejection pb, I just desactivate it/reactivate it, it sorts of reset the drive and usually it works.

Living Room / Re: Opera 9.5
« on: July 11, 2008, 09:35 AM »

If you haven't done so already, please report it in metaproducts forums or via support.
They have a tendency to be quite fast to fix issues, although I've only dealt with Oleg and Alexander.

Mass downloaders issue with O9.5 was fixed in a few days for instance.

 Metaproducts just released a beta version for Inquiry 1.8.x, which fixes the integration with Opera 9.5x !

All would be perfect if right click on an Opera 9.5x windows would not crash Opera on my office PC...

General Software Discussion / Re: Extract files from a .pst file
« on: July 10, 2008, 07:17 AM »
I have a big problem.
A client sent me a CD with a .pst file on it, claiming that there are hundreds of documents tucked away inside that she needs printed. A quick search on the web says a .pst file is an outlook archive.
"No problem," I thought. "I'll just make a new user, import the file into that Outlook account, and be done.
No such luck. Apparently, Outlook express won't touch it and now I'm stuck for a solution.
Any takers?

Hi,
I think there is a tool, reasonably cheap for a corporate product, that works quite well, even in the demo version you can do many things : R-Mail for Outlook at http://www.outlook-mail-recovery.com/.  The Outlook Express version is excellent.

I installed recently Symphony of a Vista Machine and was quite surprised to see an excellent compatibility with Excel files, where functions are the same whereas for OpenOffice, last time I checked, they have their own functions, which is very annoying for me.  I also like the "tab" approach and the fact that Symphony doesn't take over your .doc, .xls associations like openoffice where its' almost impossible to remove.

I already reported it via support, they do know about the problem, I suppose they will fix it with the next Inquiry version.

However, Metaproducts Inquiry integration with Opera 9.51 is still broken.  For those who want to be able to access Inquiry from within Opera, the only solution is to keep Opera 9.27.

Next Inquiry release should fix this, hopefully !

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Macrium Reflect Backup Program
« on: June 29, 2008, 01:31 PM »
Glad to read that.  My problems started when I tried to perform a diff. image.  Every two times my PC would froze, I had to force power down, with damages on the filesystem !

747
Thanks !  I was asking about Vista vs XP and chksdk because after I perform a vista chkdsk on a XP system, the next XP chkdsk detects errors in the "uppercase file" (?) and corrects them.  Without any seeable impact on my system, for the moment.

748
Thanks a lot for this information.  Actually after your first post I downloaded and tried PE2USB and it worked great, I now have a USB bootable key with the latest UBC2Win version.  As a bonus, with this release, the SATA HDD of my notebook are now seen by the PE system.

Now, the next question is : is there any equivalent with Vista instead of XP SP2 : for instance, using chkdsk from XP on a Vista system may cause problems ?

Developer's Corner / Re: Need help with Vista Backup
« on: June 22, 2008, 06:54 AM »
These folders are probably seen as "system" folders, hence locked against deletion.  You have to reassign the users folder to another one.  That's just a possibility.

How to do that : in the properties of the users folder there should be a special tab or option to relocate it.

750
I find it also very good.  Just a tip : when you have picture with embedded text, don't chose too big a compression level, because it can degrade lisibility quite a lot in some cases.
