Thanks, will try to download an eval version !

There is a small tool (commercial) from Valixsoft which is supposed to do quick net searches (maybe not within files).  It is regularly offered on GiveAwayOfTheDay.  It's called Netsearch I think.

I would also recommend ScanFS from Saleen Software.  GUI is a bit overwhelming but it has many features and perform non-indexed search (slow) within files.

Living Room / Re: Buffalo external HDD with "TurboUSB"
« on: January 16, 2009, 07:22 AM »
Hm, there's no description of this "TurboUSB" available anywhere whatsoever? No indication whether it's smart firmware, or a specific app for file copying? Sounds fishy to me. Also, encryption software isn't a selling point either, you shouldn't really use anything but TrueCrypt on Windows...
Here is what I found so far about TurboUSB :

I agree about TrueCrypt, it's close to perfection !

Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience with the following external HDD from Buffalo Technologies and their proprietary "TurboUSB" mode.  Reviews are fine AFAIK.

Thanks !

I bought one license of this small & efficient software which is excellent for casual evaluation of software, among other things.

Actually no.  I just try to disable as many hotkeys as possible when I install a new program !  And I understand from this thread that there is no easy/obvious solution !  Thanks !

General Software Discussion / Re: MBR Backup & Restore
« on: January 06, 2009, 04:12 PM »
Again, thanks all for all these tips.

I did try MBRtool by burning  a CD but it wouldn't save the MBR on anything.  HDHacker seemed easier to use even if I had to be extra careful when performing the save (a restore could have been catastrophic).

To be on the safe side, I also performed a full image backup of the entire HDD with Image for Linux bootable CD (TerabyteUnlimited).

I then installed the software that was rewriting its own MBR, DriveClone Pro 6 (Farstone) and I must say I am quite impressed with it.  It's a mix of Rollback RX and Acronis True Image, with the difference it doesn't crash so much.  But I guess I should give more details in another thread, even write a minireview, if only I could figure how to use the post model.

Thanks a lot 4wd !  I had a bit of trouble getting MBRTool, the main site seems to have problems, but they had it on download.com.  In my case the Lenovo MBR is proprietary, non standard, because it can activate Lenovo Recovery Partition.  I want to install DriveClonePro 6 from Farstone which comes with an excellent optional instant recovery system, like Returnil or Rollback RX, except that it seems nicer so far.  So I want to be able to restore the original one.

You're right by saying most image software also backup the MBR, it is the case for instance with TerabyteUnlimited Image for Windows V2, but I am always afraid that I need to image the full HDD and not a single partition.  Also, MBR restoration (or HDD cylinder 0 which I prefer, in case of non standard MBR) is usually tricky.

All that to say I was hoping to find a nice straightforward tool that does is.

HDHacker (Scroll to bottom of the page).

Raymond recently reviewed 5 Free Tools to Backup and Restore Master Boot Record (MBR)

Thanks.  I have tried some of them in the past, but will look again.  HDHacker seems indeed quite close to what I'd like.

For 4wd, I agree Google is often a good place to start with, but I was looking for a real experience from DC readers, not just some pagerank data.

General Software Discussion / MBR Backup & Restore

Hi all,

Could someone recommend a good, preferably free, MBR manager.  I am about to install software that will change my current MBR on my Lenovo and I am pretty sure this MBR is non standard (I am running VISTA). I'd like ideally to backup the full first cylinder.

Thanks.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Intermittent Hotkey problem on VISTA
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:39 PM »
I have noticed that the hotkey works fine almost (but not always) when the desktop is selected.  When it's another application whose windows has the focus, or other vista items (deskside bar), I think it doesn't work so well.  I have yet to change the hotkey to see if there is an improvement.

The game is also supposed to appear on Wii , using download....  So your kids could use a Wii, and you would keep your PC...  ;D

OK, thanks, I'll let you know if that solves the issue (might take some time since it only happens now and then).

I'll try that. I think I have to delete the current assignation, it doesn't seem editable ?

Find And Run Robot / Intermittent Hotkey problem on VISTA

Hi,

I recently noticed that, on some occasions, on my VISTA PCs, pressing "pause" doesn't open the search windows.  I usually rely then on the menu tray icon, and it works again fine after.  I never saw this on XP.  Could be a hotkey conflict, but since it works most of the time, it's strange.

I'd like to have some kind of utility that would tell me which hotkeys are currently assigned on my XP system, so I could avoid conflicts between different applications.  Thanks !

I personnaly rely on Metaproducts Inquiry (http://www.metaprodu...Standard_Edition.htm) which is excellent.

I take it that BitsDuJour.com is working for you? They've been inaccessible to me since Friday. Pings and tracerts don't return, both from my home and from my office.

Coincidentally, GiveawayOfTheDay is similarly inaccessible, although it's not their server itself that's unresponsive, but something on the route to them.
I can acces Bitsdujour website fine.
I forgot to mention two things :
1/ this "deal" will be valid on November 8th.
2/ An upgrade from previous version (V4) may cost you less.

720
It does work today (November 2nd) and I got Open File Backup.

721
See http://www.bitsdujou...movie-collector-pro/

They will propose a 38% rebate on the pro version.

DC used to have a special offer (which I used).  BTW the publisher changed some month ago their lifetime license for a more conventional model, with upgrade fees for major versions, AFAIK.

Is there any way to test the game before actually buying it ?
I believe there is (or is going to be) a demo version featuring the first episode of gameplay.
There is a demo version downloadable somewhere (http://2dboy.com/for...ndex.php?topic=378.0) , and also on Steam if you already have an account.

PS : I bought a license, this game is really great !

oooh. I see. Thanks for taking the time to post this screenshot.

That option could be handy...  :-\

Actually I didn't try it, but you may experiment directly, they have a trial version.

Also, I didn't see any option related to open files backup.  Maybe it's always on ?

This screen captures shows the feature "save when folder content is changed".

Thanks MerleOne.

On the feature page, they say :

"Folder monitoring to auto start backup tasks when file change is detected"

Seems like a nice feature. Do you use it, and does it work well?

And how about backing up locked files ? I'm having problems using the volume Shadow Copy service, and wondering if TK8 Backup uses the same technique...

I have not tried this feature yet and about locked file, I suppose it is VSS since there is no extra software installed, which I also like.

Actually, the publisher responds always quickly to inquiries, I am sure he can give more details.  If I can manage, I'll try to look deeper and let you know here.
