General Software Discussion / Re: Best password manager?
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:55 AM »
I have been using a shareware TK8 Safe - http://www.tk8.com/safe/ - (discounted recently on BdJ) and updated also recently.  I like it a lot because it can work in a manual and automatic way.  There are functions to sync between computers or with a USB key.  I didn't use any other one so far, so it's difficult for me to compare with other solutions.

Before using MHDD, which is rather technical, I recommend the Derevitalize demo software (try the "windows multi" option).  It runs under windows, in english !

678
I recommend either HDTune http://www.hdtune.com/ or DeRevitalize http://www.drevitalize.xwp.pl/

are you familiar with any other catalogers that you could compare it with ?

I tried just a few from your review at https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7764.0
I used for quite some time ADC from ElcomSoft.  I stopped using it when I noticed that it had trouble scanning withing multi-part zip archives, whereas WCL does this fine.  I still miss some features from ADC such as displaying the free space on a media in the status bar.

Also, updating a media can be very long and CPU intensive with WCL, it was quick with ADC.

Will be soon (March 16th) on BdJ http://www.bitsdujou...are/wincatalog-2008/ with 50% discount.  Seems a rather nice tool to me, I personnaly rely on the free lite version - for the moment.

be sure to install Steam to your large drive if you think you may be using Steam for future purchases.
Or use NTFS Junctions to redirect the SteamApps subfolder elsewhere, that works as well :)

Could you tell us how it works ?  I really need this !!!  Thanx.

Does this version support incremental or differential backup ?  And the recovery Cd is still linux based or WinPE ?

Thx

I recently came across Comodo Backup, free license, which has nice features.  On the pay software side, someone also showed me a software called vice-versa.

Thanks !  Will try.

Ah, ok. Which are the "aspects of the V3 GUI" that you miss?

And did you write them, suggesting that those - and the file exclusion feature you mentioned - could be added?
I sent this suggestion once to the developer back in May 2007.  Regarding V3 GUI, I think you had all parameters in view when launching a sync.  Now you to have to go into edit mode. Also I liked the color theme better.

686
I would just like to point out that I do like v4 for the extra features, it's just that I miss some aspects of the V3 GUI.

Also, I feel something is missing from both versions : when I preview the files to be synced, I sometimes note that a given file, for instance 'my_very_big_file.mpg', should be excluded from all syncs from now on.  All I can do from the preview windows is manually enter a new exclusion rule, I would much prefer to have a goodsync-like feature where I just right click on this item and chose "exclude my_very_big_file.mpg".  When the path/file name is complicated, entering it manually is a big cause of error.

Apart from that it really stands out !

After not doing any real backups for almost a year ( :-[ ) I today installed version 3 of Super Flexible File Synchronizer again (which I registered back then) and started to backup some stuff.

Feeling more secure already. 8)

My question: what has changed in the new version 4? Does anyone know? The German site has a version history which ends at a 3.x (huh?) and the English site doesn't seem to have a version history at all. http://www.superflex...ble.com/amazons3.htm hints that 4.x is needed for Amazon S3 Web Storage support, but I didn't find more than that.

Also it would be interesting to know the cost for updating from 3.x to 4.x

I got a free upgrade from V3 to V4.   Many things changed from V3 to V4, cannot mention all of them.  The most visible is th e GUI. I admit I preferred the V3 one, but one get used to V4.

From what I read on the site, it does not have partition imaging. This is the way I like to make backups, so I can't use it. If they will add this functionality in future releases I will surely try it.

MerleOne, could you describe us your process of backuping?

Hmm, short question long answer.

I use alternatively Drive Snapshot (with the new Drivesnap frontend, the fastest tool of all) and Image for Windows v2 (Terabyteunlimited) for C: and D: partition imaging.  My XP system is on C:, My Documents Folder is on D:, as my mail.

I use Genie Backup Pro 8 for file backup (incremental backup of My Documents, and Windows Live Mail Data every 2 days)

I use AJC BAckup for versionning of doc, xls, and other data files.

All my backups are made either on an internal second HDD, or external USB HDD.  When they are full, I burn the older image files on DVD.  Since I use differential backups when imaging C: and D:, I discard unnecessary files before burning them on DVD, so as to keep at least 1 backup per month, no more.

I recently added, on top of this, DriveClonePro 6 which has both imaging capabilities, as well as file backup and instant recovery, a bit like Goback, except it is much more compatible with most HDD tools.

I now have to keep track of my image backups in an xls file, because, I use so (too?) many imaging software and on various destinations.

I have tried in the past Paragon's imaging tools, Acronis' and O&O's, and I stay away from them.  I found 2 interesting products recently :
- R-Drive Image V4, quite powerful, with possibility to create and modify scripts, with CD-less system restoration mode (useful of PC without CD) and many nice features, however I don't like their file naming system.
- Keriver Image 4 (=PC Undo Easy Image = EAZ Image = HorizonDataSys Drive ClonerRx4) : the cheapest of such non free tools ?

Comodo has released, some time ago, a free backup software that seems really nice (for backup freaks like me at least).  It can be found on
http://backup.comodo.com/

What do you think ?

There are many different models like all those on http://www.usbgeek.com, S&H are low and I find them quite reliable.  I admit though that the white dock shown by zridling is looking nicer !

Living Room / Re: Drive Dock: Turn bare drives into floppies
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:46 AM »
i wonder if they have docks for IDE hard drives. now i have plenty of those!
It think the connectors are also a cause : it must be easier to plug a SATA HDD than a IDE one because of the number of pins on the IDE, which require some precision and maybe also more strenght to plug/remove.

General Software Discussion / Re: How would you market Windows 7?
« on: January 29, 2009, 03:21 AM »
Hire George Clooney and have him say : "Windows 7, what else !"
and Mila Jovovitch would say "Because you deserve IT..."

694
My only beef with Teracopy (which is at beta 4, BTW) is that it doesn't automatically recognise source and target folders when using TC or DOpus (both of which it includes instructions for integrating with). If I have the source and target folders open in separate panes, I'd like to be able to configure Teracopy operations without having to select folders from its interface...
Now Teracopy integrates fine with TC.  Here are the button scripts :
Parameters for copy : Copy *"%L" "%T"
Parameters for move : Move *"%L" "%T"
works with last versions of TC and Teracopy

Also note that TC proposes auto-rename when copying a file to another with the same name.

... I personnaly don't use PD any longer, I have switched to PuranDefrag V6 which better suits my needs, but there must be some hard-core PD fans here and there... :D

MerleOne, would you mind telling us why you switched and like Puran better? The feature set seems to be largely similar to me.

Thanks, Ken

Hmm, that's a long story.  For one, I was not happy with PD having some task always running on in background.  Not the case with Puran when you don't activate auto-defrag.  I find Puran to be much faster to defrag & optimize, I find the optimized disk to run as fast or faster than when defragged with PD.  Boot Time Defrag is also working fine.

Folders are placed at the beginning of the partition, which makes more sense than PD solution (at the end of all files).

One thing I am missing from PD : the offline defrag without reboot for non locked disks.  AFAIK, this is rather unique.

Also :
- Re-defrag is often quicker with Puran than with PD.
- You can chose not to optimize file placement, just folder placement, which is enough for partition that contain only data (in most cases).

Like Carol, I stayed with PD version 6 since I found next version had too few improvements. I did try RXSuite, which was a cut-down version of PD, packed with other uninteresting tools, just a "marketing gone wild" product, and Raxco was suddenly less attractive.  Funnily enough, Puran Defrag, which I discovered through Donn Edwards Blog and his "Defrag shootout", is now also in version 6.

There is still  room for improvement with Puran, like the possibilty to exclude files from a size criteria (like in SmartDefrag from IObit), it's certainly less polished, but I just say this : try it on your system - after a full image backup of course  ;)

I have a very bad experience with Macrium : it install an active filter driver that runs even when Reflect is not running and this had made my XP BSOD several times.  After I removed it, BSOD disappeared.  That was with GAOTD free license a while ago.  Maybe it's fixed now...

I've read many articles/threads on backup/imaging but still haven't found something that is simpe enough for a novice yet powerful. What I'm looking for -

1. define backup profile like backup a certain folder/drive
2. detect external drives based on their unique serial numbers, not drive letter
3. automatically run the backup when the external drive is connected
4. be able to monitor the backup location for changes
5. keep multiple revisions
6. keep backup files in a native format, so I can use the backup drive anywhere
7. be integrated into explorer, like previous versions. So I can right click on a file/folder and say, show me the last 2 revisions

Many programs do 1,4,5 but I haven't seen anything which combines all the above.
I think SFFS, Super Flexible File Synchronizer is close to do what you want, may be not all but most of them.
http://www.superflexible.com/ which does 1,2?,3?,4,5,6, 7
Also AJC Backup which does 1,4,5,7
