@MerleOne
I launch Cathy with a launcher (Executor). But double-clicking it in Windows Explorer or starting it via a link on the desktop doesn't help.

It only runs fine on my Win7x64 when I launch it from the Desktop icon.

That is strange. How did you create that desktop icon then? I did via drag and drop and holding the Ctrl-Shft keys.
If you don't start it via your desktop icon what do you see then?
Does it start or not? If it does, does it look like my screenshot?

Hi.  I have installed Cathy on a data disk, D:, in D:\Tools\, then I right-clicked on Cathy.exe and chose send to DEsktop (create a shortcut to the desktop).  When I launch it with RecentX, the existing catalogs are not found, because  the current directory is not Cathy.exe's, but RecentX's.  And no, it's not like your screen capture.

Hey, do you launch Cathy from Windows 7 from the icon on the Desktop or using a launcher like RecentX ?  It only runs fine on my Win7x64 when I launch it from the Desktop icon.

Nice to hear :)

Would probably have been better to .zip up the file? Unless, of course, the webmail either disallows .zip or checks contents for executables as well (*sigh*).

Yes, I think it does check .zip for executable files and blocks the mail if one is found.  I could encrypt the zip, in that case I just get a warning, but it's faster to rename as a .doc file.

Hi all,

I am happy to report that the issue is solved.  Actually, it was a MS Word error.  I had sent the file as a .doc file, to have the webmail accept it.  The receiver had to rename the attached .doc into a .exe to be able to read the message.  But on his PC, extensions of known types were hidden (default XP setting), so when the file (foo.doc) was renamed into a .exe, it was actually renamed into foo.exe.doc. Hence the error message.

The setting has been changed on this PC, and now it works fine.

FSekrit should run just fine on anything from Win2000 up.
Actually from Win9x and up - I had to go through a few pains to make that work (and then there were a couple of versions where I accidentally botched the win9x support :$).

So, no, there should be nothing preventing fSekrit working on XP. In fact, I've just tested 1.40 on XP-SP3 (under vmware), and it runs just fine. fSekrit also doesn't use any of the fancy instruction sets, so in theory you should be able to run it on... dunno, probably even a 386 :)

Please do try getting a capture of the error message. Perhaps antivirus? Some of those products don't like fSekrit, either because it's compressed with PECompact, or because of heuristics (copying itself to %TEMP% and launching from there, writing to it's own executable).

c.gingerich, from your site: "256 bit RSA_AES encryption with password". That seems like a weird encryption scheme to choose for an application like this?

Thanks, I'll look into it .

General Software Discussion / Re: Software to suspend HDD ?
« on: October 01, 2012, 03:52 PM »
Dropping it could kill the hard drive. Bumping into a door/wall not so much. It would have to be a really freak accident, with somebody running full speed into a solid object at just the right angle..

Forcing the drive to park while the OS is running OTOH ... That could do some damage.

Thanks.  I guess then it's either make the PC sleep or leave it running trying not to bump into something hard...

I have an app that is similar if you want to check it out. It's called Self Note and it supports tabs to allow multi notes. It is free also.

Thanks, will try it.  But I'd still like to know why/if fSekrit has an issue on this old PC.

Docking is not the main issue, it's moving around the building, hitting door frames and so on when HDD is working.

General Software Discussion / Software to suspend HDD ?
« on: October 01, 2012, 06:33 AM »
Hi,
I have the following issue that I'd like to solve : quite often, at work, I have to remove my notebook from the dock and go somewhere else, for example to attend a meeting.  I usually put my PC to sleep before removing it from the dock, so that I don't have to move it when the HDD is still working.  But putting the PC to sleep takes quite some time, and also awaking it at destination.

Is there a simple utility that could park the HDD for a few minutes, without make the PC sleep ?  I suppose not, but one never knows...

Thanks.

PS : this PC is running XP Pro.

fSekrit / fSekrit not working on an old XP PC

Hi,

A friend of mine says fSekrit.exe v1.40 won't launch on his XP PC.  I'll try to get a capture of the error message and will report here, but is there any known issue on some old XP PC ? I personally never encountered such a behavior.

Thanks.

Thanks.  Nice offer !

Resurrecting this topic:

@MerleOne: You may want to check out the deal that Curt posted: Debenu PDF Maximus FREE toady

Since it should do what you want, monitor a folder and turn an image into a PDF - it can also turn a normal PDF into an image PDF.

Thanks for notifying me.  I almost missed it !  I am not 100% sure it does what I want because I want to convert word documents with math formulas directly into a raster pdf.  The only way to be sure formulas are correctly output.  Here, if I have to use a structured pdf before, I think I'll encounter again the issue of formula translations.  Anyway the only way is to try it out...

164
Thanks.  Got a license but didn't try it yet.

Knights of Cydonia by Muse

Not only is the music fantastic, the music video is a hilariously great homage to spaghetti westerns.

Excellent, fun and interesting at the same time !  Thanks for sharing it.

No... why should I when I bought ClipMate and have used it for years now?
...
Yes - and I mentioned that I can also do that with ClipMate - look at my previous post. Point is, why should I have to always go back and re-copy the entry before I can paste it? Again, read my previous post!
...

I see what you mean for the second point.  Regarding the first one, I just mentioned "trying", not "buying".  But I guess it's no longer useful since ClipCache seems to work the same way. Sorry !

167
Did you try using ClipCache instead of ClipMate & Excel ? If I copy some cells within Excel then paste them at another location, then press escape so that the dotted blinking line is no longer visible, I can return to Clipcache, copy the last entry, and paste it again in Excel.  I just tried with cells having simple numbers, not formulas.

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?

That happens all the time with TV shows BTW (sorry for being slightly OT).  I am thinking for instance to SAAB (Space Above and Beyond) which had a few nice points but was cancelled with more questions opened than closed.

169
Doesn’t really matter which one you use, if you are using Excel 2007 or 2010 the Office Clipboard simply will not get along with the clip utility. I HATE this about MS Office, and I'll probably drop Office altogether. I'm trying to find out if Softmaker Office acts this way with the clipboard.

BTW you can turn off the Office clipboard in Excel 2010 - I did but now I get errors whenever I copy anything in Excel. This is one Microsoft program "feature" that really sucks worse than most!

Jim

We have Excel 2007 @ work, and clipcache latest version seems to work fine, but I have not tested it extensivey. What do you mean by "it doesn't get along" ?

Please, is there a simple program that will allow me to butt-join graphic images together, much like you'd do with paper and glue?  This would be nice for things like before-and-after screenshots, etc.  The images might not always be the same size or shape.  I'd like full control over their positioning, and to save the composite result as a new graphic.

I thought this was what NANY 2012 Pledge & Release: Image Grid was, but it felt like a sliding-block puzzle and wasn't quite what I wanted.

I found a while ago, on GOTD : Total Image Slicer.  Reasonably easy to use and does just that.

Just started Games of Thrones from Georges RR Martin

Settle in; you're in for a long ride.  =]

You couldn't be more to the point : I saw the paperback version, which gave me a fair estimate of the "volume" it represents.   I find the kindle version less intimidating.

My ISP is broadcasting now the season 2 of the HBO TV show made after the series, but I doubt I'll be able to catch up...  I am still in the part where Jon is staring is "job" at the wall....

Just started Games of Thrones from Georges RR Martin, and at the same time, thanks to Kindle, Telling from François Taillandier.

Recently tried TreeProjects, also proposed on BdJ, and I really like it : light on resources, efficient.  Lacks encryption at the moment but the developer has added many features in the past few months, hopefully this one is in the roadmap.
