Hi,
I recently came across a rather strange display problem when using IE7 on Vista.  The favorites bar, instead of displaying favicons and names like "Windows Update" on the favorites bar, now display the .url icon and names like "Windows Update.url".  All favorites are displayed with the .url suffix.

It's all the more annoying that I already came across this problem several months ago on the same machine.  I had to restore the system disk to a time where it was not solved and it's back !  But I can't remember how I did it.  I thought it was just an uninstall of the Google Toolbar, but I did the same thing, and it's still there.  I am also pretty sure it is not related to the fact that the shell doesn't hide file extensions when they are known.

A first look on google was not successful.

If you have an idea ...

Thanks.

Just got an e-mail from them, coupon code is dclone30pro0531, goto
http://dr.bluehornet...685E4E2C0A165F41E74F

Main features :
  • System Snapshot backs up a 250GB hard drive in as little as 10 seconds!
  • Universal Restore allows you to restore files or images across different hard drives, regardless of hard drive format, size, brand, or operating system
  • Backup photos, music, and emails with AES Encryption locally or offsite
  • Migrate to VMWare, larger storage devices, or a new system with just a few clicks!
  • Backup and restore all settings for office, iTunes, and more!
  • 100% RAID support - RAID 0/1/5/10/50/60/JBOD

Cf also www.farstone.com

Overall, it's a mix between Goback and an Imaging + Backup tools.  Recovery CD is WinPE based.  CD-less recovery is also working, without creating any special partition.

Hi,

I just found out a few days ago a really nice software, somewhat comparable to spacemonger or windirstat.  It's free and can be found on :
http://www.uderzo.it...e_sniffer/index.html

I like it a lot.  I have tried to convince the developer to join us here. Maybe this will happen...

Hi all,

There is one thing I liked about XP, it's that it used to be easy to setup a small home network by just making all PC connected to the wifi router have the same workgroup name, by default MSHOME.

I just installed a brand new Samsung NC10 running XP SP3 and this time, it doesn't work.  The NC10 doesn't see the other XP but the other ones see it.  The problem can also be seen doing the following thing :

I open a command window (execute cmd), then type net view.

On the NC10, I get an error message after 10-20 secondes : "System error 6118, the workgroup server list is not currently available" (translated from French).
On the other PCs net view immediately returns a list of machines, including the NC10, like
\\SamsungNC10\ ...

I have used Google to look for solutions but found no clear cause.  This is all the more surprising since it is a brand new machine that I have not already "tuned".

I'd like to know if any of you has already encountered a similar problem and would gladly like some advice on how to solve this.  Thanks !

Hi,

I will soon be configuring a netbook, a Samsung NC10, running XP SP3 Home, and I am wondering which solution to use for backup/recovery.  I have to take into account that this machine has no CD/DVD reader.  Even if I could use an external CD/DVD recorder with USB, I would prefer a solution where it is not necessary.  I guess the system will come with 2 partitions, System & Data, plus probably a proprietary recovery system.  I would like to have a system that can withstand user error (user would be ... myself).

So far, I have identified these solutions:
  • FD-ISR (full version, not the cut-down currently sold by HDS)
  • R-TT drive image which has a CD-less recovery boot system
  • Drive Clone Pro 6 which install a non standard MBR and can reboot in Win PE environment
  • Paragon Drive Backup 9 Personal which allows to use a usb key as bootable recovery medium
  • Image for Windows v2 which also supports usb key as bootable recovery medium

I'd like to know which solution you would recommend in this CD-less configuration, either from this list or from another.

Thanks.

Hi,

I am looking for a simple program - preferably freeware - that does the following : I have a folder that holds all my downloaded software installers, currently around 6GB.  I'd like to burn them on a set of single layer DVD, without being zipped, and if possible, burn newly downloaded files on the space available on the last DVD, or on a next DVD.  I have tried several commercial backup programs : Genie Backup, Backup4all 3 and 4, Titan Backup, they either lack this function or have nasty bugs.  The closest think I can find is a Mac freeware : http://photography.s...eant.org/dvdspanner/.

I also tried Ignition from KC Software, which doesn't seem to work, and also includes a nasty adware (whose installation can be optionnally stopped).

Thanks !

General Software Discussion / MBR Backup & Restore
« on: December 27, 2008, 03:55 AM »
Hi all,

Could someone recommend a good, preferably free, MBR manager.  I am about to install software that will change my current MBR on my Lenovo and I am pretty sure this MBR is non standard (I am running VISTA). I'd like ideally to backup the full first cylinder.

Thanks.

Find And Run Robot / Intermittent Hotkey problem on VISTA
« on: November 06, 2008, 06:59 AM »
Hi,

I recently noticed that, on some occasions, on my VISTA PCs, pressing "pause" doesn't open the search windows.  I usually rely then on the menu tray icon, and it works again fine after.  I never saw this on XP.  Could be a hotkey conflict, but since it works most of the time, it's strange.

Coding Snacks / Global Hotkey Management

I'd like to have some kind of utility that would tell me which hotkeys are currently assigned on my XP system, so I could avoid conflicts between different applications.  Thanks !

See http://www.bitsdujou...movie-collector-pro/

They will propose a 38% rebate on the pro version.

DC used to have a special offer (which I used).  BTW the publisher changed some month ago their lifetime license for a more conventional model, with upgrade fees for major versions, AFAIK.

General Software Discussion / Excellent RSS reader
« on: September 24, 2008, 06:46 AM »
Hi,

I recently discovered FeedDemon from Newsgater which is freeware.  There is one feature I'd like to mention because it is really there that this software shines : if you create a simple account on Newsgator (username+passwd, no e-mail required!) you can sync all your PC where feeddemon is installed so that you share RSS streams and also which items have been read.  There are many other features, I would really advise those who look for a nice RSS reader to have a look.

This excellent software from Metaproducts that helps saving web pages in full is now freeware in its basic edition from http://www.metaprodu...ry_Basic_Edition.htm

It's very basic compared to the standard payware version, but it's still nice IMHO.

Living Room / Lost URL for website that helps fight SPAM
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:58 AM »
Hi all,

I just realized I cannot recall the URL of a website that offers the following free service : the website has a name I cannot remember, say it's www.nomorespam.com.  If you go to the URL, you define any (long) character string, say  "my_new_address", then if someone sends an e-mail to "[email protected]", you can read the email simply by entering the above string "my_new_address" on the website URL.  So you can create very easily one-time e-mail address you may use for registering on some websites and downloading demos without revealing your true e-mail.

Can anyone help me find this website again !  Thanks.

Update : I just found it again, using "one time email" on google...  It's http://www.mailinator.com/

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a freeware that can convert a bootable CD into a bootable USB key ?  I have the feeling that just copying the file won't work (I didn't try yet).

Thanks.

Find And Run Robot / Small request about FARR 2 (last version)
« on: June 18, 2008, 03:46 AM »
I finally made the jump and upgraded yesterday from V1 to V2 !!!  I like a lot the new version, but I am missing one small thing : formerly, when the search results where displayed and when I pressed Enter, the top of the list item was launched.  Now it is the same behaviour *but* the entry is no longer highlighted, same thing when I press [1-9] to select one of the first nine entries, before it was highlighted.  I realize I was looking at this.  Is there a way to have this back ?

Thanks !

Found Deals and Discounts / Macrium Reflect Backup Program
« on: June 16, 2008, 02:21 PM »
There is an excellent deal, apparently, on GAOTD this monday : a file backup  + diskimaging program, which includes Linux Recovery CD, BartCD Plugin and WinPE ($5 extra) recovery CD.  It's called Macrium Reflect.  It looks like Acronis, in its principle, with many interesting features.

I suggest you download it and activate it ASAP.

PPTMinimizer reduces powerpoint and word files without losing the information...  Pretty impressive with some big ppt, whose size is due to pictures that have been included.

A disk defragmenter with many possibilities.  I personally prefer PuranDefrag 4.5 from PuranSoftware but it is a nice tool at that price !
