Living Room / Re: Looking for smartphone
« on: March 28, 2018, 10:14 AM »
My opinion based on the half dozen or so phones I've gone through:
  • Never get a phone that isn't rootable.
  • Never get a phone that didn't provide Dual SIM and MicroSD storage, (ie. not Hybrid slot).

Thanks. However, I never root my phones, I use bank apps and MobileIron that do not work on rooted phones or it is illegal to install them in rooted phones.
As for the hybrid slot, it seems a bit of inconvenience if you have to use either second SIM or MicroSD and not both. But I have never bought a MicroSD myself, so it would be okay I think.

As for its screen, sound quality, signal, robustness? I think that would matter most for me.

I am planning to buy Lenovo P2 due to its long battery life, any opinions?

Also, I logged in a wifi that opened a website and asked me to enter my login in order to connect. Now, each time I connect to that wifi, it doesn't open any window to log in, probably it remembers my login from last time.

Is there a way to make it forget the previous login so that I log in with a new login? I tried to 'forget' the network but it didn't work.
Any hint? thanks!

Living Room / How to check xlsx files for malicious macros or virus
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:48 AM »
Hello!

I got today a response from a job ad I applied and they sent me an xlsx file to test my Excel skills.

This sounds a bit dodgy to be honest and I am reluctant to open it. However, I scanned it with VirusTotal.com and no virus was found from all engines.

However, are these virus engines able to detect malicious stuff in a xlsx file, such as macros etc?

They also told me not to distribute the file because it's a 'test' so I cannot really upload it here.

Any advice?

Thanks but it does not seem to apply for my version (I don't know which one I have, there is no About button).
I tried to see in the Options for a 'do not update normal template' but I couldn't find anything.

Any idea?

Living Room / Re: Extremely dissatisfied with Google Drive
« on: December 31, 2017, 09:03 PM »
Strange, after selecting all, the three dots at the top right has these options only:
Sort by
Clear Selection
Select all
Folder actions (which doesn't have an offline option)

But I will download them, thanks, but maybe Android deletes them from there?

Living Room / Extremely dissatisfied with Google Drive
« on: December 31, 2017, 06:19 PM »
Hello!

I have Google Drive on my Android phone. I had selected some files and chose to make them available offline. However, now after few months, they disappeared. Additionally, the option to make them available offline disappeared.

How can I make them available locally on my phone? I only see the option to download them, but it doesn't allow me to choose location!

Is there any other solution?

thanks!

Living Room / Convert scanned column text to normal
« on: December 31, 2017, 01:49 PM »
Hello!

I scan text from scientific articles where the text is in columns and then I have to manually convert it into regular text (ie. newline occurs only in new paragraphs).

Is there an automated way to do this?

Thanks!

Yo no comprendo.
STEP 1 (calculate)
STEP 2 (proof)

...That's it.
It would seem to be an elementary accounting question.

Yeah, I know, but how much you calculated it to be? Because I find 3.1

OIC. The question is a bit confusing. It seems to be a an accounting question, except they have apparently confused it by using (misusing) the term "trend".
Generally speaking one will not necessarily be able to establish a significant statistical trend from just 2 (or 3) successive annual data-points. A significant trend usually only emerges over longer time-series data. Thus, to be correct, there are no "trends" in the data given in the example.

I would guess that what the question probably means is:
If the rate of growth or decline of the factors (costs and revenues) between year 1 and year 2 is repeated in year 3, then what would the tax be?

STEP 1: As a quick rule of thumb, I would initially calculate the percentage net rate of growth in pre-tax revenue, between year 1 and 2, and project the year 3 pre-tax revenue based on that percentage, then apply the 35% tax rate to the projected revenue, to arrive at a projected year 3 taxation figure.
The growth in pre-tax revenue would be a net factor of the sum of the rate of growth or decline of the factors (costs and revenues) between year 1 and 2.

STEP 2: You could show workings for a proof of that (i.e., checking the rule of thumb) by projecting the factors (costs and revenues) for year 3 and adding them up. This is usually good practice anyway (especially when using spreadsheets) since it checks your initial calculation (above) and will identify any errors made.

Having said that, you'd be surprised how many people omit such elementary checks to prove the figures calculated in spreadsheets. Reminds me of some years back in NZ when the published Treasury budgets were found to be embarrassingly out of whack by a factor of 10 because of a simple spreadsheet error, where a check of the type above would have easily identified the error prior to publication. Not a good look.    :-[

I think that's what I did. I projected the values to year 3.
There are two ways to project them, one by keeping the change percentage same and the othe by keeping the change same. I would go with the first, but I find something like 3.1 :/

No it's not hacked! Why do you think it's spam?

It was just a web hosting link, here I uploaded it somewhere else:

The prior link had porn on it which is why I agreed with IainB and deleted it.  Archive.is can't interpret this one, so I'd suggest approaching it with caution.

What is this one?  It would help if you'd include a description.

Ah sorry didn't know that, it's a simple maths question.

The only video interview I passed, was one that was a genuine technical issue and my camera blanked out and didn't properly record image.
The company told me that 'there was an issue with your camera but that's fine you passed that stage'

LoL the problem is that after many interviews, I have 0% success in video interviews and 100% success in telephone interviews, so what could I do other than fake a technical issue with the camera so that they will only judge what I say and not how I look?

PS: I am not applying for modelling jobs lol

Living Room / How can I blank out my laptop camera?
« on: December 09, 2017, 12:42 PM »
Hello!

I have a video interview where I have to record myself via my laptop camera. (I can use my mobile phone camera too)

However I don't want to be seen during the recording. I cannot put something on the camera to block the light, because it will be obvious. Instead, I need to blank out my camera (with grey colour as when there is no signal) or something.

Any idea how to do that?

thanks!

but it was blocked as malware :(

Add it to the AV exclude list

It's the Microsoft AV, I don't think it allows me to do that!

It's an mSATA SSD, go buy a bigger one.

Is there some philosophical reason it always takes half a dozen posts before we get enough information?

Well, I started the thread having in mind a portable storage device, as I didn't expect my laptop to be upgradable!

I download the Free Keylogger from here:https://www.raymond.cc/blog/free-and-simple-keylogger-to-monitor-keystrokes-in-windows/
but it was blocked as malware :(
Is there a tested solution?

Copied text can be captured with plenty of things.

I like using Notepad2 with the /b command line switch to turn it into an automatic pasteboard. Keep in mind that it will not autosave the file. You have to do that manually.

Check the command line switch section in the readme file for more stuff it can do.

Thanks, but I am looking to capture typed text (and copied text now that I am thinking of it)

I am afraid I wont be able to upgrade the hardware, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 20175 (convertible) do you think it would be upgradeable? Also which compatible SSD I could use?

Yeah, I did try that but you are not enabled to paste anything in the dialpad while there is active call.

Living Room / How to expand laptop storage?
« on: November 12, 2017, 12:54 PM »
Hello!

My laptop only has a 128GB SSD which barely meets my requirements. Which solution would be best in terms of maximizing storage capacity without bulkiness?

I got a low profile USB but it is only 128GB :(

Thanks!

I am roaming now, so I call the international voicemail number. It asks me to enter my mobile number in international format, even though I am calling from the same SIM. It's a UK number so it should be +447.... What can I do? :(
