looking for a software or something that has the ability to display text as shown below
ie. where text lines are grouped in a treeview with the ability to expand/collapse, etc them
the grouping criteria will be a regex match or something
also, it would be nice to highlight (paint in specific color) groups that all their lines have some specific regex matches

hello!

I need a tool that will let me shut down my pc with one or two clicks

while this seems very easy at first thought, I am basically searching for a solution that will properly shut down all processes and programs that are possibly unresponsive or they run and their shut down will result in data loss, and all the other possible popups that WinXP or programs display and you have to click them in order to shut down your PC

so, I need to click it and leave the office, being 100% sure that the PC will shut down

also, any solution that speeds up shutting down, is extremely welcomed

hello!

I use the scanner software that the scanner was shipped with, but it too much verbose, it asks me to click a button in order to create a pdf, after I have scanned a page (while it should just do it automatically) etc

I have used AHK to try to automate it, without much success, because its GUI is troublesome

anyway, is there a software to replace it, but fully compatible, without interfering with scanning quality and speed, but more customizable and handy than this one?

General Software Discussion / antivirus' negative impact on read/write/copy etc file speed

I notice that running an antivirus, has a noticably negative impact on read/write/copy etc file speed
if this is true, I suppose it is because before accessing a file, it is firstly read and scanned by the antivirus, which causes a delay

to overcome this problem, I wonder if we can run every new file sandboxed by default, so that we wont have any delay (afaik, to be honest I 've never used sandbox) and afterwards, antivirus may scan the file, or afterwards, if antivirus will not detect malicious behaviour, the file to be removed from sandbox

this way, the whole system will be more secure (since malicious file detect wont lay only to heuristics analysis, but also its real behaviour will be examined), and moreover, the whole system will be more responsive and there will be no negative impact to its performance

your opinion?

hello!

I want to research (gather information) on 20 subjects/questions. That means that for each subject/question, I will copy text from various sources, extract pdf pages, crop parts of pdf pages, copy images, tables, etc from the web, MS Office documents, etc, and put all of them together, so I will process them later, to produce a report/response to the subject/question.

Is there a software that can help me manage the research of those 20 subjects?

Maybe MS Word can do this, but:
- I want to easily go through the info I gathered for each subject, and not do endless scrolling (unless MS Word can create an outline or something, so when I click on a specific subject, to display the gathered material on that subject)
- I want to easily add material of various formats, pdf, images, tables, text, without any problem (eg without pdf text's format to break, etc)

any suggestion?

I am looking for a free antivirus solution

Microsoft Security Essentials seems the best solution, we have it at work with no problems at all, but at home, I run WinXP 64 and it is not supported

instead, I run Avira freeware, but lately it spams so much with ads, that I want to uninstall it

any alternative? lightweight in performance is my main criterion, and reliable ofcourse

hello!

I have a word list (different each time), where each of the words (or lines, if you prefer) is the name of a chemical substance
I have a huge folder of pdf files of the specifications of every substance

what I do is to gather all those specific pdfs of the specific substances in the list, to make bunch of pdf files that corresponds to every substance of the specific wordlist

but I need to automate that process, so can you suggest me please:

1) how can automatically bind the wordlist with the according pdf files
2) how can I create a single file (not sure what kind of file) that will contain all these relative files (compression files, rar, zip, etc would not be convenient, because they will require time to open)
3) how can I check at each point, if a specific project (eg the gathering of the pdfs of a wordlist) is incomplete and which exactly files are missing (so to add them manually)

can you suggest me an idea, a procedure, an excel file to build, and ahk script to build, a program, anything!

I am searching how to do these in EXCEL:

1) select cells and then replace the text of each selected cell with *something*, with one click
2) set as default to always "expand selection" and select "no header row", before sorting, and select all cells with data before sorting
3) drag and drop columns to change their position (eg, drag and drop column A, between column B and column C, so that it will become column B)

any idea?

I try to add the printer, but I cant go through the process, WinXP offers to find it, but it founds nothing, or maybe I dont search correctly

I saw in Windows Explorer of Windows7 a search field at the top right, that also searches inside the content of the files of the folder (even xls files, etc)
