Now I found the time to give AccelMan a test run. Seems to have the potential to steal the first place as the most bloated, unintuitive file manager, right before Directory Opus (which will never be my favorite one, it is powerful but....).

And I haven't even managed to make it run continuously. Started it - no AccelMan appears. Killed its process, started it again - works. Exited, started it - no AccelMan appears.

Looking forward to any further development, though...

Why? "Never change a running system". After all, there wasn't a need for that, unlike 16 bit software (as 32 bit CPUs came up).

Ya know the "Classic" start menu really only had about a five year run 95-2k ... The Start Panel introduced (to the public e.g. the rest of us had it earlier...) in 2001 when XP was RTM is looking at about a 10 year run at this point. So... Why is it still being treated as some new evil thing?!?

Or do you mean it just uses more resources in general? But I always heard that "unused ram is wasted ram", don't you agree?

Unused RAM is cache for me. More resource usage = less performance with the same resources, right?

what I read about microsoft having made studies on how it was an improvement in usability for the general public.

According to the recommendations, it takes at least twice as much of resources.

I performed studies myself. The one I performed them with was I. You see, if you are keen with a certain way to handle your OS (having been using Windows since 1996), it is a huge loss of productivity if you'll have to change your behavior entirely.

No more actual "task" bar, no more classic start menu; two big disadvantages for me. Of course, computer newbies (starting with Vista or sth) won't have these problems.

Windows 7 is, basically, Vista with a unusable task bar. So I can't see a sense in "upgrading".

Another PDF viewer, apart from the "big players" listed here, is apvlv.
Its "special feature" are keybindings like Vim has.

For example, < Ctrl-f > to forward page, < Ctrl-b > to previous page, 'k','j','h','l' to scrolling a page up, down, left or right, and so on.

Free, open source and multi-platform. GTK though, so not really optimized for a fast startup.

About the "too many buttons" on small windows: The group button is enough for me, as all features are hotkeyed..

Depends on how you use it.

If you use it with eclimd, not necessarily, as it seamlessly starts a "hidden" eclipse without all that GUI crap...

I would actually vote Directory Opus, but no lifetime license with this price is a no-go for me.

So currently I basically use two file managers:
1) CubicExplorer, still in first steps of development but already fast and stable with a bunch of useful extra features. And it is free.
2) xplorer², the fastest FM on the "market". Using your regedit skills, you can also assign My Computer to it, although the developer doesn't really support this ...

Alternative: Nomad.NET is very feature-rich (and free), too, but the major con is that it is developed in C#, so it's sluggish and hogs resources. A pity, really...

As I recently stumbled upon this thread:
The major reason for me not to use TC is the lack of a single-pane mode. I tend to do a bunch of file operations within the same directory. The second pane is a waste of space for me.
