I caught my wife with her funny bone momentarily off-guard recently when I got her a dozen roses. After we got home and they were put into a vase, I spotted a stray rose leaf on the kitchen linoleum. We're always talking about health foods and herbal cures, so I said, "You know what that can cure?" As she scooped up the leaf and deposited it neatly in the wastepaper basket, she absent-mindedly asked, "What?" I replied with a smirk, "A broken heart." She laughed.  :)

Matthew 9:16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

Mark 2:21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

If the Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic is presented with a pair of predrilled parts that go together, and if either part has hole/s that are even 1mm off, s/he has no choice but to wobble the drill bit and oval or oversize the hole at least enough to put in a fastener. He is not allowed to substitute a different kind of fastener than specified, so unless it is a squashable rivet that can be deformed to help fill up the oblong hole, he must go oversize, such as reaming and substituting a 1/4 inch fastener in place of a 3/16 inch one.
If he does, it will change the flexibility of the entire row of fasteners, creating a stress point in the oversize hole location; the oversize fastener will not allow even flexing of the part, throwing an uneven, greater burden on surrounding adjacent fasteners and parts.
Now, add a few tiny gaps where the oblong hole did not quite get totally filled up; magnets for corrosion. On a large scale we call areas that collect liquids such as rain water, hydraulic fluid, and the like, as ''natural sumps', and often the instruction is to drill a drain hole to keep it drained out (believe me, they don't drill holes randomly, they follow instructions dictated by Engineering in AFCs [Air Frame Changes]). In a little gap in an oblong hole, it's just a 'gap', but prone to corrosion.

Intergranular corrosion - aluminum has 'grain' just like wood grain. Much the same way that termites furrow deep into the core of a solid piece of wood, intergranular corrosion can take advantage of tiny gaps in oblong holes to invade deep into solid aluminum parts. It does take time, but it's not supposed to happen at all.

@IainB Awesome feedback, Iain.  :Thmbsup:
I'm reminded of tests showing that a less 'flammable' fuel was developed, less prone to igniting in a crash, then discarded as less profitable, due to 'gallows engineering' (or 'gallows economics').
In aircraft design theory, 'aerodynamics' is prioritized above 'anti-corrosion' (or something of 'words to that effect'), which it should be; then every means of employing anti-corrosion into the design is employed. Thus; corrosion-prone aluminum was/is used (prior to the invention of composites) in construction; then it is electroplated wherever possible with corrosion-resistant anodize and epoxy primer, 'wet-installed' with more epoxy primer and catalytically cured silicone rubber, with drain holes to eliminate natural sumps (hidden pockets where water can collect and corrode), and so on. But -as per my ^first video- if holes that are supposed to be pre-drilled by CAD/CAM in sub-assemblies with micro precision (for later assembly into the main body) are instead pre-drilled by hand (being 'sighted in' by macro eye-balling), then the aircraft mechanic ends up having to 'wobble' the drill bit to 'match up' the matching holes in sub-assembly and main body or next-larger assembly, thus 'going oversize' and ending up with oval holes anyways, that weaken the design and become pockets of future corrosion-prone 'design discrepancies'. Please excuse me for waxing a bit wordy, but I am a former 'blue collar' aircraft industry worker-mechanic (not an engineer), and I've seen (and avoided) such.
It sounds like the bottom turds could benefit from a liberal application of 'de-turd-gent' to clean up their revolving door act.

BTW, every individual aircraft part (be it a leading edge slat, or an angle, or a stringer, whatever) was always pre-stamped with a serial number, ending in a dash-even for right hand, or dash-odd number for left hand, assembly. In the 9-11 Twin Towers documentary, an aircraft engine ended up on a sidewalk, battered into junk; every part of it should have had such a serial number pre-stamped onto it, identifying both the part, and the aircraft type (but I never saw anyone's investigation of that).
Thanks for your most informative and professional feedback.

Living Room / What musical piece is this?
« on: April 24, 2019, 06:51 AM »
I think this may be by the classical musical composer Bela Bartok. I don't know of any way of posting a sample written musical score without laboriously finding, downloading, and installing a huge music-composing software program.  :-\  So I will try just posting the notes in alphabetical form, and see if anyone has any idea who the composer is, and what the name of the Work may be.
So here goes, in simple melodic form, on which the full orchestration is based, and hope for the best.  :)
A blank space indicates a new note, \ indicates that the next note is 'down'; / indicates that it is 'up'. Single letters are quarter notes, as 'C'. Double letters, as 'CC', are half notes. 'R' is a quarter-note 'rest', 'RR' is a half-note 'rest'. '#' is a 'sharp'; 'flat' (spelled out) is a 'flat', as 'B-flat'.
I will post a full scale in the Key of C to help me choose my notes as letters more accurately:
A B C D E F G,  A B C D E F G,  A B C D E F G.
It is a fairly quick piece, not slow or languorous. Here is the first part of it.
C C C \B /D D D /E \C C C \B \G \CC /D /E /F. (repeat).
CC /D /E /F# F# /G \F# \E \DD, \CC /D /E /F# F# \E \D \B \A. (repeat) .

Could an old slow Pentium type pc be used as a makeshift usb docking station? Or an old dead RAID mobo in a box pc? IOW, what if one ran a usb cable from a new laptop to a usb slot in the mobo of either of the above which was not powered up? Then the extra usb slots could be plugged into?

Another whistle-blower exposee, reporting shabby workmanship, about a completely different airliner, also manufactured by Boeing, the company whose aircraft never crash, they just go 'boeing-boeing':
Boeing 787 Broken Dreams
"Our journalism reveals the deeply-held safety concerns of current and former Boeing engineers, who in some cases fear to fly on the 787, the plane they build. We uncover allegations of on-the-job drug use, quality control problems and poor workmanship."

« on: April 12, 2019, 11:12 PM »
a.k.a. Talicor
The Ungame - Wikipedia
Rhea Zakich, then a young mother from Garden Grove, California, was forced not to speak for months after her doctor found polyps on her vocal cords. Although the polyps were removed and she made a full recovery, the experience affected her: unable to speak for that long period, and afraid that the problem might return, she felt emotionally estranged from her family. This led her to the realization that, as she put it, "we all spend so much time talking... but we never really communicate."

As a remedy, she decided to write down on paper cards a number of questions that she wanted to ask her husband and children. Some were light-hearted ("What do you like to do in your spare time?"), some serious and intimate ("If you could live your life over, what would you change?"). Before long, with nearly 200 cards on her hands, she realized that she could turn them into a sort of board game.

She played it with her family, and the results were surprising: her husband revealed for the first time how frightened her illness made him; her son, a bright student, expressed how he hated the constant pressure to perform well in school; the other son talked about how his brother's constant teasing hurt him. At the end of the game session, her husband said: "I've learned more about all of you in these twenty minutes than in the past five years." It was the first time each family member really felt listened to and heard, since the game rules state that players can only talk on their turns.

Later, they let their neighbors borrow the game to play with their children; the oldest son took it to his school psychology class, and his teacher asked for copies. Soon, a company was founded by someone whose family was dramatically changed by playing The Ungame. The new Ungame Company began to produce and market it, and as their line expanded, it was renamed Talicor. In 2008, the sales topped 4 million in more than 14 languages. The Ungame was the first non-competitive learning/communication game on the market and has been used in schools, churches, businesses, counseling centers, hospitals, and prisons, as well as in families and party settings.

The best tool is a Premium membership...  :(

https://www.youtube.com/premium

I have a membership, and I can say that the best tool isn't a premium membership.  I download videos even though I have a membership because of this stipulation:

Download videos and music on your mobile devices to watch and listen offline for up to 30 days without being connected to the internet. For more details on how to download videos and music, please see this Help Center article.

I don't download normal music that way- but unique things that could disappear and are not available elsewhere?  Yeah, I download those all the time.

tnx Nod5, but a bit too tech for me.

wraith808 I have to surf yt w/o logging into it, to protect my ID and privacy.
btw fyi the live action air crash investigation vids are all disappearing and being replaced with pay per view on yt.

You are aware that there are scripts running next to any giving website that can be made to look like they originate from the website you are currently watching. Can be something you picked up from another website.

Ads without exit button? That is fishy, whichever way you look at it.

Anyway, best to scrub your system with anti-malware tools such as: Junkware Removal Tool (jrt for short), rkill, ADW cleaner, UnHackMe. In your case ADW cleaner should not be necessary, because you are already running MalwareBytes. The others are an addition and only do their work when you activate them, so no real-time protection. Both look spartan and will terminate all other running processes, so make sure you save whatever you are doing first before running jrt or rkill. Often jrt and rkill find what MalwarBytes misses and vice versa.

You can also use the Glasswire Monitor software for free (this limits the functionality) for personal use. That is a pretty nice looking tool to see if your computer is putting out traffic that is not legit. It does this in a very graphic way, that makes it quite clear what is going on your computer that is network related, even for the lay person.

Then there is UnhackMe. I got it some 6 months ago as a giveaway for free and it is very thorough, but the buttons look weird and the standard GUI layout rules are not followed at all. And there is also the badly translated English. But if you can put yourself over that, it does work. Even though it takes it sweet time to do so. it also requires user interaction during the scan and removal process.

But after you run these tools (and a reboot), you can be pretty sure your system is clean enough to surf again (but with a bit more caution hopefully). I'm not familiar with the Norton AV software, haven't touched that software with a ten foot pole for many, many years now. I like the unobtrusiveness of free BitDefender AV software, but with common sense, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender you can be just as safe, except you don't lose a lot of your computers resources in the process. The free versions from Avast and Avira have become real hogs and are spewing almost continuously adverts in your screen to buy their full fledged products and subscriptions and services and the kitchen sink. Practically as irritating as having a virus on your system.

JRT ---> ADW Cleaner found five and removed five:

OS: Windows 10; browser: Seamonkey; Anti-V: Norton 360, Malwarebytes, CryptoPrevent.
I was watching Exceptional Engineering - Offroad Caravan Monsters on youtube, when a pop-up ad appeared on the lower LEFT for an electronic 'tiki torch' ad that I took an interest in. I clicked (safely, or so I assumed) on it -I mean, it's 'only' youtube, right?- and viewed the ad. Then, I tried to click out. And I'm, like; 'Okay, where do I--hmm; lemme see now...'
Nowhere could I find to click out. I tried, I really did. I finally virtually crashed Seamonkey and actually had to Log Out, then log in again and start a new session from Desktop.
Okay, so I should'na clicked in, even if it is 'only youtube'. So anyways how do you 'click out' from that ad page?

Who still uses DVDs?  Let it be known, I have a collection of over 2000 DVDs (burners and originals) and I can't be bothered to use them. Pen Drives are so much more convenient, available in much bigger storage capacities, faster, usually more reliable (in case of burned DVDs) and by now cheaper.

For old style magnetic media, like tapes I can still see uses. Still very hard to beat with regards for price/performance per GByte of stored information. But DVDs? Its just not worth it. I can buy here in the capital 1TByte portable hard disks from Seagate for 30 USD. With DVD's you must make lists of what is stored where, you need to verify if burned DVDs still work after a year or so, you must store DVDs Preferably in a location without lights and a constant temperature else they fade/rot away.

While portable hard disks are not a good long term storage plan either, they sure do last longer than burned DVDs. Original DVDs use much better material for their storage layer, which is then protected by one or two optically invisible layers. That makes them much more robust than burn DVDs, which use a much worse material (so the laser inside the burner doesn't have to be too strong). Protection layers are usually not included, because legally the strength of a laser for public use is very limited. So the material in the storage layer does rot away pretty easily, making the data unreadable.

Nowadays I only have one DVD reader available to copy the drivers from any device I purchase onto a portable hard disk (I always keep those as an archive, just so I know there are drivers to fall back to). And that is literally the only reason.

Ok, on topic: Mouser is correct, you will be needing a USB hub device that comes with its own power supply. Although the laser in a burner is weak, it does draw quite some power when writing to a DVD. You also have to take into account that it is very important that the engine spinning the DVD that is being burned runs at the same RPMs during the writing. You really should not depend on the power of the USB ports on your laptop to provide the power to spin the DVD and the laser. Any hiccup there and you can throw away the DVD. No, even burning DVDs with the slowest setting can fail easily when you only depend on the power supply from your laptop.

USB hubs with separate power supply should have enough consistent power for burning DVDs. Is there a DVD reader in the laptop you have? If so, use that reader to check if the burned DVD was done correctly. You will be surprised (in a bad way) how much burn DVDs can only be read properly in the DVD unit that did the burning.

Buying a USB bracket and separate DVD burner device to create your own portable DVD burner, that can be a not so great experience. Lots of burner devices do not burn so well when connected through USB. Firmware from USB brackets and DVD burner units are know to create conflicts. That way of creating your own portable DVD burner can be a total crap shoot.

Really, so much headache for so little storage capacity per DVD, why even bother when there are so many better alternatives available for similar prices (per stored GByte) or cheaper...
I'm learning, and thank you both. Pen drive = thumb drive? I do need a way to access data on old DVDs; such as my official Windows Word Office software disk, so I can install it on the laptop.
