JeffK, how about Google's picasa then? Tried that?

brotherS: Use keyconfig enhanced. It can be downloaded from http://www.extension...ex.php?showtopic=254 (at the bottom).

It's working on my latest Firefox, 1.5.0.7.

DonL: I tried the latest beta (5.10.0032) and see that the auto remember only works partially.

Watch this screencast to see what I mean.

Thanks DonL. Kindly include these two features. The day that's done, I'll buy your XYPlorer.

Breadcrumbs feature is self explanatory. But if you haven't already, I urge you to try xplorer2 (I use the free version) to test exactly how the 'auto remember' works. That way you won't be working on something that's not what is generally intended here.

1) is it possible to have clickable breadcrumbs in XYPlorer (like in xplorer2 shown below)?

2) Can XYPlorer remember the navigation I used? For example: In xplorer2, if I navigate to C:\Program Files and go inside say 'FindAndRunRobot' folder when I hit the backspace key 'Program Files' folder is currently selected, now when I press enter to go in it, 'FindAndRunRobot' folder is auto selected 'cos that's where I was the last time.

Not only that, even if I close and open xplorer2, it will remember the last navigated folders/files.

This is an supremely useful feature which you'll only realize the value of, once you know/use it.

Does XYPlorer have it?

I've created a 4:44 minute screencast in flash format that shows

1) Downloading mIRC
2) Installing it
3) Setting up mIRC
4) Connecting to Efnet
5) and finally joining DonationCoder's IRC channel.

File size: ~ 7 MB

It has helpful bubbles but no audio.

Click on the screenshot below to launch it:

Let me know if anyone wants it in zipped format.

I am a big fan of del.icio.us. I bookmark links there and they get auto posted on my blog once every day.

Pligg's official instructions are a mess in that they are incomplete and if you follow those, you will end up pulling your hair in frustration.

But if you follow my installation tutorial, it's very simple and easy.

http://www.soople.com is a useful site where you can do a variety of Google searches. I'll let the attached screenshot below do the talking.

Of these, I use ' Search within one site' most often.

brotherS: Good extension. This is copied fron HitAHint though and of course made better. Can you confirm that this doesn't work properly and as expected in Google image search pages (try going to next page or the id of say, 3rd or 4th page of the results)?

housetier, You can get rid of two buttons (back and forward) and have only one.

Instead of creating a new thread, I thought it's appropriate I post here.

If you are a power surfer jumping from one site to another several times in a day, you need better ways of doing the following:

1. Opening a new tab
2. Closing a tab
3. 'Undo'ing a closed tab
4. Going back and forward
5. Jumping to next and previous tabs
6. Opening extensions window.

You can increase your surfing productivity by using Keyconfig, a Firefox extension inspired by Opera. If you want to be able to do the following, read on.

T (key on your keyboard)  to open a new tab

C to close the current tab

ctrl + Z to undo and thus restore the last closed tab (for that oops moment ;)

Z to go back, X to go forward

A to go to previous tab, S to go to next tab

E to open the extensions window

The steps below will enable you to set E key to open the extensions window.

1. Download and install keyconfig enhanced from here. It's at the bottom of that page.
2. Tools -> Keyconfig.
3. Click Show Edit Mode. Click New.
4. Enter Extensions as the Name.
5. Leave Menu/Extension blank.
6. In Shortcut field, type the letter e
7. In Command box, paste BrowserOpenExtensions('extensions');
8. Click Apply and OK.
9. Restart Firefox.

Similarly you can set the other shortcuts. Below are the commands you would need (the underlined text could be entered as Name). Note that you can set any of these at once and press OK to dismiss the window once done:

Next Tab
gBrowser.mTabContainer.advanceSelectedTab(1);

Previous Tab
gBrowser.mTabContainer.advanceSelectedTab(-1);

Close current Tab
var tab = gBrowser.mCurrentTab; gBrowser.removeTab(tab);
This may require Tab Mix Plus installed. I am not sure.

Back
Type back in the Filter box, click the entry where the shortcut is alt+left arrow, set the shortcut to Z, Apply.

Forward
Type forward in the Filter box, click the entry where the shortcut is shift+backspace, set the shortcut to X, Apply.

New tab
Type new tab in the Filter box, click the entry where the shortcut is ctrl+T, set the shortcut to T, Apply.

Note that most of these shortcuts won't work in the tab that has Gmail open. You might take some time to get used to, but start using these shortcuts. You will definitely enjoy.

Living Room / Re: Zap reader
« on: September 10, 2006, 06:18 AM »
I came across this only now and it's good. Here's a IRC convo on it:

[16:13] <srikat> try http://www.zapreader.com/
[16:14] <srikat> I have been testing it since half an hour. Looks like it really makes me intake content faster than normal reading
[16:20] <app> omg...you actually like that?
[16:20] <app> that conflicts with my reading style
[16:20] <app> i don't read 1 word at a time
[16:21] <bro|thr_S> srikat: o.O wow, looks great!!
[16:21] <bro|thr_S> srikat: I *listen* to some knowledge-based radio shows at ~180% of the speed too, so this might work for me :)
[16:22] <srikat> app: you can set the no. of words it shows you per frame
[16:22] <srikat> I set the speed to 325 and no. of words to 2
[16:22] <app> i am kind of a natural speed reader
[16:23] <srikat> The author said in the screencast, he uses 600 and 2
[16:23] <srikat> now that's really fast
[16:24] <app> kind of makes it hard to visually scan diagonally through a paragraph though
[16:24] <srikat> ya, this is not for most web surfing activities where we scan
[16:24] <bro|thr_S> it should have keyboard control, like GoogleMail and http://www.rememberthemilk.com/
[16:24] <srikat> this is for those articles that we really want to read, every word
[16:25] <srikat> bro|thr_S: it uses few keyboard controls currently. 'p' to play/pause; 'l' to skip to nxt line, 'k' to previous line etc.
[16:25] <app> only thing i read every word is technical stuff where i am reading it to learn something
[16:26] <bro|thr_S> srikat: ah, thanks

Living Room / Re: How to turn F lock on the keyboard ON by default?
« on: September 09, 2006, 03:30 PM »
TucknDar: Can you please explain as to which key should be remapped to what?

I ran the program and the F Lock key image representation is grayed out. Every other key on the keyboard appears enabled and I am able to click on any, and assign it a new mapping.

Living Room / Do you have a blog yet? Introducing "Vox"
« on: September 09, 2006, 01:59 AM »
Vox.com is a free blog provider with supercool designs, helpful community, and great features.

Few highlights:

1. Tagging, Commenting
2. Unlimited uploading of your Photos, Music, Videos.
3. Flickr, YouTube etc. integration (meaning, you can pull stuff from there and have it displayed in your blog posts)
3. Template customization
4. 'Collections'  where you can group any blog posts, photos, mp3s, videos of your choice so they belong to a particular topic.

You don't have to worry about hosting costs, uptime, bandwith and other such maintenance headaches. Of course, you also can't insert your own Google ads or do other customizations that you could, on say your own WordPress blog.

My Vox blog is at http://sridhar.vox.com. That is the default design and I haven't touched the template.

Vox registration is currently invite-only. Let me know if any of you is interested and I shall see if I can arrange some.  8)

Again, a disclaimer: I am just a voxer, not affiliated with that service.

General Software Discussion / MiniReview: Windows Live Writer
« on: September 09, 2006, 01:39 AM »
Hello all,

I wrote a 'on the fly' review (meaning: quick, reviewing as I was testing it) of Windows Live Writer, a free downloadable program that will help you include rich content in your blog posts.

I am linking it here so others might find it useful: http://www.sridharee...windows-live-writer/  :-[

I am in no way affiliated to Microsoft. What is your favorite blog posting software?

[edit: i just changed topic to say MiniReview - mouser]

Living Room / How to turn F lock on the keyboard ON by default?
« on: September 09, 2006, 01:31 AM »
I have a Microsoft keyboard which has a 'F lock' (Function lock) which is OFF by default when the computer is turned on. Unless that key is turned ON, pressing function keys like say F5 doesn't work.

It's not a problem as such, but a minor annoyance.

Is it possible to have this key turned ON by default upon system start?
