it seems like Microsoft is trying a different approach to get Vista more endearing to the users. there is no content on the website yet, though.

General Software Discussion / Tiny Watcher - a tool hosted at DC
« on: August 03, 2008, 10:44 PM »
i was reading a blog entry about this tool called 'Tiny Watcher' when i realized that it's actually hosted on DC. it was even mentioned before in this thread here. we really need a who's who directory of software for DC. :)

Coding Snacks / codename: CopyCap - a tool to copy caption text
« on: August 01, 2008, 12:38 AM »
some back-story: sometimes i want to copy a window's titlebar text or edit the caption before taking a screenshot. so i started working on my 'middle-button-magic' tool.

basically you middle-click on a windows titlebar and a menu pops-up where there are commands to copy the caption text (and the windows' class as well) into the clipboard. plus another option to modify the titlebar itself, though any change is temporal and lasts while the program is not refreshed or closed.

ws-CopyCap-1.png

note: AVG inadvertently ate my script just a while ago so please bear with me until i retrieve a backup-copy.
a bit anti-climatic since Skrommel had already whipped up a script in my absence but here is it anyway. :)

P.S. Ack: Deozaan came up with the name - 'CopyCap'. :)

LaunchBar Commander / Mouse click delay
« on: July 29, 2008, 07:12 AM »
after a shortcut is clicked, some sort of delay would be helpful so that users wouldn't launch two-three instances of the clicked programs. this happens when there is no visible status of the program is being launched (read: programs that takes ages to appear).

LaunchBar Commander / Read-only option hinders shut-down
« on: July 28, 2008, 10:10 AM »
after setting the 'read-only' option, LBC shows a message asking me to 'save anyway' or 'discard changes' whenever i shut-down the computer. is it possible to suppress this message?

on my LCD screen, ClearType is very useful when i am reading on-screen however this feature is not the best when it comes to fixed-width fonts. so whenever i'm doing some programming work, i need to disable the feature quickly, hence this tiny tool.

QuickType is a utility that sits in the systray for quick and easy toggling of the ClearType settings system-wide. my only wish is that it can do command-line toggling, that way i can call it up to toggle the setting and quit.

Note: it needs .Net framework, though.

General Software Discussion / MHTML support in Firefox
« on: July 18, 2008, 12:41 AM »
UnMHT - a Firefox addon that provides support for viewing or saving as MHT file. AMO tags it as experimental so you may have to register/login to download. However, this addon is also available from its web-site with separate versions for Opera/Safari users.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Alias: Google Maps Directions
« on: July 17, 2008, 01:15 AM »
New Update:
thanks to the efforts of herojoker, this alias has become more flexible with the separators. now the queries can be separated by arrows with arbitrary length (>, ->, -->, --->, etc.), semi-colon and "lines" with arbitrary positive length >= 2 (--, ---, etc.).

also added is single location search as well as support for .dcupdate files where you can update future versions via DCUpdater.

if you had already downloaded the previous version. please delete the old alias in '\AliasGroups\MyCustom' and extract the new zip contents into '\AliasGroups\Installed' instead.

P.S. the icon is from the openPhone theme.

i was not happy with the SetPoint software that came with my Logitech mouse so i installed UberOptions which improved the UI a lot. then i recently came across the X-Mouse Button Control and i downloaded & put it in a KIV folder. so here i am wondering what other tools are available and what is my fellow DC'ers favorite mouse button enhancing tool?

those who have been using Firefox 3 may have noticed this change. Firefox 3 now by default blocks any input on the file upload edit field, instead a file-browse dialog is opened. >:( This makes the text field un-editable and to make matters worse, the devs are proclaiming that this behaviour is to prevent 'exploits'.

there hasn't been much news on this - i did find a blog entry, though.

Edit Middle 2 is a handy addon when using the location bar, now dubbed the 'AwesomeBar' in Firefox. this addon updates the results from awesome bar even when editing in the middle, not just at the end as is the default. e.g. let's say, you have typed 'donatoncoder' before realizing the missing 'i'. you can use the arrow key and type the 'i' & the results will be shown immediately. a must-have for keyboardists, imo.

DC Gamer Club / Diablo 3 announced!
« on: July 02, 2008, 05:36 AM »
Blizzard's classic hack-n-slash action RPG is set for another sequel! this surely brings back a lot of nostalgia - gaming-wise. 8)

Diablo 3: What We Know So Far
by Nick Breckon Jun 30, 2008 4:47pm CST

With Blizzard's Saturday announcement of Diablo 3 came a veritable whirlwind of details in the form of developer interviews, panels, and gameplay demonstrations.

After becoming frustrated with the lack of consolidation, I've compiled a simple bullet-point list of all the known features, changes and additions to the series in the new sequel.

Considering the wealth of knowledge, I'm sure I've missed a thing or two. Feel free to use this as an opportunity to share tidbits of information, and to speculate on all things unknown.

Table of Contents:

1. General Overview
2. Gameplay
3. Questing
4. Interface
5. Multiplayer
6. Classes
7. Monsters
8. Story
9. Screenshots and Video

Screenshot Captor / Making the values persistent
« on: June 04, 2008, 08:44 PM »
mouser, in the highlights section i'd like the transparency/opacity value to be '120' instead of the default '200'. how can i make it persistent? currently the value reverts to '200' each time SC is restarted.

DC Gamer Club / Penguins Arena FPS - fun penguin shooter
« on: May 29, 2008, 11:10 PM »
i found this game via google thinking it'll be a nice game for my little ones, instead i've ended up playing this game. this is an indie game that puts the player in a penguin's shoes (webbed shoes/flippers?) in a mission to exterminate all the other penguins. i think it's intended as a multi-player game but single-player works just as well. the demo version is somewhat limited but doesn't take away the fun. a good diversion while waiting for the day to pick up. ;)

Some screenshots:
screen03G.jpg
screen06G.jpg
screen07G.jpg

It all begins when a penguin legend comes to life in the form of Sedna, the ancient Penguin Goddess. Global warming, pollution... Penguin tribes are endangered. Sedna utters them that there is room for but one tribe. And so the purging begins.

Now it's your turn to join the snowball battles and drive the other tribes into the sea.
Penguins Arena is a thrilling and innovative First Penguin Shooter with very short rounds and where the magic of reincarnation, combined with the supernatural ability to return to the game as a ghost, ensures that your character has every chance to change your tribe's fate. And you can do it all for just $19.95!

DC Gamer Club / quitting PC version of Assassin's Creed

i wonder this has been posted before.. but watching this video was quite a laugh, though not for the actual gamer. Ubisoft needs to really get a UI team that specializes in PC games.

reading Curt's thread on fav apps reminded me of this app, which is a front-end for cdrdao recording tools. quite nifty and does the job nicely.

Burrrn is a little tool for creating audio CDs with CD-Text from various audio files.
Supported formats are: wav, mp3, mpc, ogg, aac, mp4, ape, flac, ofr, wv, tta, m3u, pls and fpl playlists and cue sheets. You can also burn EAC’s noncompliant image + cue sheets! Burrrn can read all types of tags from all these formats (including ape tags in mp3). Burrrn uses cdrdao.exe for burning.
