Screenshot Captor / Req: cmd-line parameters in the "External File Explorer" field

i sometimes use the File > Explore at Screenshot Directory option for file management purposes. however i would prefer more control on how the folder opens since most of the file-managers support command-line parameters.

e.g. "C:\Program Files\Altap Salamander 2.5\SALAMAND.exe" -R %folder%
or
C:\totalcmd\totalcmd.exe /O /T /R="%folder%"

it seems to be the season for new search engines, this time from Microsoft. Bing looks quite fresh and does quite a good impression of a search engine. there are general and local search plus images and news, maybe an alternative to the almighty Google? more importantly, is anyone from DoCo using it yet?

DC Gamer Club / 3D Realms closes down - Duke Nukem Forever no more

i was waiting for further news to see if this was a hoax by 3DR but it seems like the fat lady has finally sung. 3D Realms has folded due to insufficient funding, placing the future of Duke Nukem Forever in the hands of their publisher, Take-Two. this sequel to wildly popular Duke Nukem 3D was announced in 1997/98 and has had a long journey into vapourware-dom. Hail to the king, baby!

General Software Discussion / character encoding keeps changing to Cyrillic in WinXP

i noticed recently that i can't type certain characters without them being turned into Russian chars. i checked the regional settings then i looked at the character encoding on my browser and email programs and also my office programs but they all show as 'English - United States' or its equivalent (Western ISO 8859).

later while fiddling with the font settings, i found out that all the fonts' script has been changed to 'Cyrillic' instead of 'Western' (see pic). changing them back is now an issue because once i closed the dialog, it's reverted to Cyrillic encoding. so can someone help me with this problem?

after some time using Greasemonkey i was going through installed scripts for i had accumulated quite a number. i want to remove redundant (upgraded to add-ons) and not so frequently used ones.. there are some gems in there like Simplepedia, Twitter results in Google, Text-area Backup and Better (…) series from Lifehacker but i am wondering if there are any special recommendations from fellow DC'ers. so if you had found or wrote a fantastic user script, please share here..

is there a way to programmatically toggle DirectDraw Acceleration other than the 'dxdiag' way? i'm looking for a way to temporarily disable DirectDraw Acceleration to trouble-shoot a game, maybe with a few DLL calls. any chance of doing that?

DC Gamer Club / Playing Grim Fandango on a modern PC

on a slow day, i tried installing an old favourite just to see if it will run on my WinXP SP3 with 8600GT. everything went well except for sprites which looks 'striped' like in the screenshot. Manny Calavera looks like he's been through a shredder.

i googled but most of the advices are about setting Win98-compatibility, copying files to the hard-disk and disabling the multiprocessor/hyperthreading settings. i believe my problem is graphics-related and was wondering if anyone else has had any luck with other golden oldies and therefore may lend a hand here.. btw, i had also fiddled with the anti-alias setting (plus some others as well) within nvidia's control panel but to no avail.

DC Gamer Club / Gothic 2 mod team looking for help with English translations

one of my favourite game (Gothic 2) has a very cool mod called Velaya. its original run in German was very successful, so much so that the team behind it was encouraged to produce an English translation. they (Sektenspinner -programmer and Schreiberling - story writer) have obliged and have asked for volunteers to help out with the translation works.

i'm not sure how many of DC gamers are Gothic fans but if you are proficient in German and/or English, do drop by this site: http://velaya.worldo...othic.com/translate/ and help out if you've the time. you don't even have to sign up, you can help out as a 'guest'.



PS. i came to know this community effort via this thread and i've been trying to spread the word..

i'm trying to recall but this fails me. i need a command-line tool (dir, ls, etc) that is able to list down folders with the criteria that the folders do NOT contain a certain file (the file is specified by user). can someone please help..

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Find filenames/folders above certain length and offer to rename them

as per title, i was thinking that a program could go through given folders recursively and report back the files/folders that are above the user-defined length and alow the user to rename them within the UI.

this will come in handy when burning cd backups. too many times, the burner complains about extra-long filenames way too late and sometimes this happens during the burning session, with a prompt holding up everything. i'm not someone who hangs around watching the whole burning session, so this program will be a good guide for me before i click the 'Burn' button.

General Software Discussion / Help me back up a virus infected CD (!)

a friend has an old cd from which he intended to retrieve some stuff but unfortunately his anti-virus scanner's spider sense was working and it displayed this error message (see pic). i told him to turn off his anti-virus temporarily and get his stuff, later he can run a full scan on his PC. at the same time, i'm thinking how can he back up this CD minus the infected file(s)? hopefully fellow DC'ers could come up with some solutions..

Coding Snacks / Word 2007 MRU Menu

this is a small tool that displays MRU list items in Microsoft Word 2007 and helps the user to delete the file-entries. Works only with Microsoft Word (Office) 2007.

advanced users may have noticed that this also can be done manually by going to the following key in the registry: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\File MRU] and delete the listed keys. plus this technique works with all Office 2007 applications not just Word.

Installation & Usage
Download this file into a folder of its own and run from there.

Usage is quite straight-forward. It is best to close Word 2007 before using this program. the 'Backup' button is to back-up the registry keys involved (you can run this first after loading the program) while the 'Delete' button deletes the checked items. that is all to it.

over at bit-tech.net, there is a quite interesting and ubiquitous (given the time of the year) article. i wonder if fellow DC gamers could come up such a list of games they had played throughout the year and their comments about the good, the bad & the ugly. i myself for the time being had been sucked into the wastelands of Fallout 3.
