I've never seen a piece of spyware or virus bundled with AIM. I even tried installing the latest version just a few minutes ago, no spyware at all.

May I ask what version of ad muncher is installed and running? Also, what is the process name of the aol executable? I am sure that this either A. Is blocked in the newer builds of ad muncher, or B. Can easily be blocked by adding the process's name to the filter targets tab under options.

3054
Just wanted to give everyone this hint for ad muncher to display some of its capabilities. This little section allows you to add a "Download Video" link to every youtube page so you can save each video you want. Just an example :)

This post has been updated on 14/07/2006 to allow it to work with the new Youtube.

Under My Filters

function y(swf_id){var i= swf_id.indexOf('=');var videoID = '';for(var no=1;no<swf_id.length-21;no++){videoID+=swf_id.charAt(i+no);}document.getElementById('yt_download').innerHTML='<a href=http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=' + videoID + '>Download Video</a>';}
- Add javascript to all pages

Under Tools >Replace Text

Match Text
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->*<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Replace Text
<div id="yt_download"></div>

Match Text
ord=math.random()*10000000000000000 + 3;

Replace Text
y(fo.getAttribute('swf'));

Now, when you visit any Youtube video page, a "Download Video" link appears above the video's title. Since Youtube stores all it's files as flash videos (.FLV), simply rename them as filename.flv .

This is only my first attempt at writing a custom filter and it's probably a rather amateur way to implement it, especially the replacement text.

I havent seen a chat program that messes with a web browser, installs spyware or viruses at all. What ones have you tried? I know gaim is perfectly safe, as is trillian, miranda, aim, msn, yahoo, icq and google talk. IRC (mIRC) is also a good chat protocol/series of networks.

Living Room / Re: Free alternative for Windows/Microsft Update
« on: July 13, 2006, 10:57 AM »
Personally, I wouldnt trust anyone BUT microsoft to update my computer as they know which files my computer requires. I have already chosen NOT to install the WGA notification stuff (Yes, it is possible), and the updates keep coming as they should.

 HFNetChk pro is a utility I might consider being that it utilizes the hfnetchk program (Microsoft's OWN tool used in its MBSA) to scan for needed patches. I have yet to verify the method that the other site uses, since it's not stated on their site.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: MS Virtual PC is now free
« on: July 12, 2006, 05:54 PM »
I honestly dont see it as a big possibility of monopoly abuse. I mean, vmware makes most of their money from the GSX/ESX. As long as MS doesnt make VPC locked into the OS, i.e. you can remove it, I dont forsee a problem. Anyways, from the following quote

Virtual PC Express is limited to only 1 single Virtual PC Image and supports Windows 9x, NT, 2000, XP, MS-DOS, and OS 2. Its designed to give Enterprise users the ability to use a earlier version of Windows for application compatibility if needed for applications that cannot be made to work on Windows Vista. Essentially it gives Enterprises the ability to upgrade and still be able to use their older software. Software Assurance customers get the right through licensing to run two operating systems - Vista and the "Guest" OS. Virtual PC will also offer 64-bit support as well.
-msfn.org

Looks like vmware still has the edge in that you can create MULTIPLE machines in vmware workstation while MS limits you to 1 installation and only of a MS os or compatible (OS2).

perhaps this would be good time for them to do so, i mean, wouldnt you think they make more on their server products anyways? for companies looking to deploy multiple installations on a single machine?

How can this be abuse of monopoly thou? I mean, surely, vmware making their product free and ms following suit cant be considered anti-trust, or am I missing something? Are other companies allowed to do it but not MS?

Very big deal indeed! Glad to see microsoft has decided to make this freeware. A very good move. No doubt this is another one of those apps that still needs to be cracked for those that dont pass the WGA check :-/

3062
I am not saying that you are wrong in this matter, but I do think that at some point you have to pull the plug. Patching security holes in an OS that will be almost 10 years old, in an industry that moves as fast as the computer industry, just isnt feasible.

Microsoft has extended support once for Windows 98 users, and warned ahead of time that support would end as of a few days ago.

I understand what you are saying about something working, and seeing no reason to upgrade, but heck, I know a few pc's still running windows 3.1, that doesnt mean microsoft should continue to support it. Yes, it might not be feasible for certain folks to upgrade given their current product works, but, the technology engine keeps on rolling and the industry has to keep up.

Microsoft has done a great job of supporting their products, and the knowledge base articles will remain online until this time next year before MS considers removing them (according to their press release). Even as such, it wont matter if MS drops their knowledge base as there are far more articles available via the net now, than there are on the knowledge base anyways.

Yes, it would be nice if we could get security patches from 3rd parties, but I dont forsee this happening either as it would require access to the source tree for windows 98.

3063
Another good point Carol. I would be in support of adding an ADDITIONAL stream in ogg, but moving it strictly to ogg would alienate alot of users who might not know about ogg, or might not want to use ogg. MP3 is the mainstream format, and is supported by every player, proprietary or not, and it works well.

3064
proprietary? How so? Ogg would require users to install a 3rd party codec when you can play mp3's out of the box in just about any media player on the market.

3065
This is a good thing. You can only support a product so long. They extended support back in 03, i believe, due to customer demand and gave ample warning to its corporate customers still running the OS that support will end on this date. Chances are, if a user hasnt upgraded by now from 98, they wont, regardless of security updates. Its like any product in the world, you can only support it for so long. Look at the automobile industry. I guarantee ford wouldnt issue a recall on a 78 mustang.

3066
Done and done!

3067
I dont know what I was really asking, please forgive me. The wife got me up WAY to early today.

3068
This was a very nice idea mouser, and I think this will attract many more users to come into the forums and participate. Its definitely less intimidating, thats for sure, and I know that was your goal!

Great job!

3069
Looking good! One final thing, can you get it to work with the arrow keys for Vol Down, Vol Up, Skip Forward, and skip backward?

I.E.

Skip forward -> right arrow
Skip backward -> left arrow
Vol Up -> Up Arrow
Vol Down -> Down Arrow

If you could do this, I would be set! Thanks again for your help!

Developer's Corner / Re: DNS Service
« on: July 11, 2006, 09:29 AM »
I run my own dns caching server at home, made by www.ntcanuck.com, and I have never had a DNS issue. Before that, I would utilize ns1.berkeley.edu and ns2.berkeley.edu as both proved extremely reliable.

General Software Discussion / Re: GreatNews RSS Reader

I must say, I have been using opera's rss reader more and more. Although, I think I am going to switch to great news. I've used it in the past, it is a great program, and it has more customizability on views than opera's does.

I actually enjoy the new windows GUI's, but am glad that microsoft left in the classic view for users who do not like the new colors. I tend to use the newer gui more as i find it more appealing.

Living Room / Ancient Technology (Computers)
« on: July 10, 2006, 01:41 PM »
http://oldcomputers.net/

Early personal computers were nothing like present day computers, they had personality!

Each was different and more exciting than the previous, with new features and capabilities.

Sure, they have limited power, were possibly very expensive, and can't run any software written for a different system, but that's what makes them unique and interesting!

This website is dedicated to the preservation and display of these vintage computer systems.

Pretty interesting site if you ask me :) I had to post this for app, whom said she still runs the altair 8800 ;-)

OK, I admit it now, your posting this has caused me to further investigate AutoHotKey and I love it. Now, if only I could get this script to work properly with ZP. I have tried what I can to get this to work, perhaps someone here can help.

I have attached my current custom key config for zoom player so that you can test it with the keys I have configured. I have also attached IDEAL.TXT which is the same as what I made in my OP, but has a listing of the search term used when searching for the entry in the edit keys dialog on ZP, plus a second column which has the key I would ideally like to use with the CTRL+ALT combo.

Currently, using these keys causes all sorts of mayhem in ZP. I have tried redefining the keys that have duplicate definitions after editing the desired function, but to no luck. Any help is appreciated!

Also note, as I said above, the first column in ideal.txt is what you can use to search for the associated key in zoom player since I got tired of remembering where to look.

Zoom player can be d/led from www.inmatrix.com
