A project idea for someone; anyone! I'm not a coder, though I might get a batch file to work, maybe. Anyway, the idea:   how about a front end or package wrapper that would allow a user to take a program that doesn't normally start with Windows and wrap it in a shell that would allow a user to specify that the program should in fact run with windows.

For example, one of the DonationCoders made me a wonderful little program called DoubleClick, which converts the scroll wheel to a double left mouse click when pressed. I would like to convert or modify this program (as well as a few others I have) to start-up when Windows does, without having to remember to run each one separately. Any ideas or suggestions?

Basically, you want a tool that takes a list of programs and starts them up? I actually think that app's Lacuna Launcher will do the trick for you.

I, for one, cannot stand DRM and cannot stand streaming content either. However, that said, I have had a VERY positive experience using the VuDu rental service on my playstation 3. My family just rented Brave and it worked great. Granted, this was due to my connection being available.

On the other hand, I am completely for offline storage. With hard drive prices going down, it is easier to download a file and store it than to rely on the cloud. I have almost completed ripping my 850 DVD collection to MP4 for storage on our media server. This will be complete once I am able to setup a Raid 1 array of about 4TB. Right now, I am stuck at 2TB on a single disk. Once I get a new enclosure, I will setup a Windows-based raid mirror (hardware raid is flaky unless you invest in a reliable controller, not those cheap promise boards).

I have had ZERO problems with 64 bit windows since the Vista days. XP64 was another animal, but Vista 64 and Win7 64 have proven quite reliable.

Mouser, do you have a screenshot of the thinner toolbar in expanded mode?

I think this version of the toolbar looks much cleaner, much more visually appealing, and will fit in nicely regardless of where it is placed on the screen.

I am with tomos on this one. I think the toolbar needs to be thinned out and perhaps have the "Then" drop down removed. When I use a tool like this in toolbar mode, I want it to occupy as little screen space as possible. The toolbar is still quite long and large.

How many 16 bit Windows apps still exist? Why is there a need to maintain backwards compatibility with DOS or 16 bit apps at this point? Even in Windows 3.1, we had the win32s 32-bit abstraction layer which allowed the execution of 32-bit code. I view the removal of 16 bit compatibility as a step forward and I hope to see more of the legacy code removed from Windows. I think this is the one thing that has truly held back Microsoft from being able to move Windows forward in a more proactive manner. At what point do you cut slingload and say "Developers, update your code."? At what point do you tell that user who refuses to upgrade their machine that they will not be able to upgrade to the newest version of Windows because of their choice? At what point is it time to move forward and let those who choose to remain in the past, remain there?

Is that true even in desktop mode? Can someone clarify/confirm that That would be enough to keep me from using Win 8.

Not only no, but hell no that isn't even vaguely true. The Windows 8 desktop is a desktop just like every other desktop all the way back to Win95.

The start menu is "missing" in Windows 8 (Oh FFS) ... The Start Menu has been "Missing" since Win XP launched in 01. The Start Panel is what's actually "missing" in Windows 8. And I for one am actually tickled pink that the Start Menu has finally been taken out and shot in the head. Every time I get stuck in front of a machine that's been retro'd back to the start menu I feel like I've been instantly transported back to the 1870s, and am being forced to dig for potatoes with my teeth after my arms have been cut off!

And regarding the Windows 8 is poised at the brink of enslaving us in a gilded cage which will turn us all into palpitating porridge based eye puppets crap ... Can we at least try to keep in mind that this is totally conjecture. Nothing is or has been proven or verified as fact. No internal secret memos have been exposed substantiating any of these claims ... It's total assumption pure and simple.

Because it just might actually be a really handy step forward in user interaction if people could refrain from fashionably shitting all over it long enough to learn how to use the god damn thing.

God mode stuff was not added to FARR since it varies greatly with each OS (since Vista). Also, there is no direct way to call these links and this would require a set of shortcuts be developed for each OS (Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, Vista x64, etc).

I am still looking at a way to accomplish the God Mode items. The CPanel shortcuts are for control panel namespace applets only, not God mode.

On the original topic, I am compelled to mention my 8 year old son. Without any forewarning he went from Windows 7 one day to Win 8 the next. He noticed the change and made mention of it but had absolutely no difficulty making the transition.

Granted, my son does have one advantage over Chris Pirillo's [stupid] father -- having not grown up in the Windows 95/XP era, he was accustomed to using the physical start button to toggle the start menu.

In my opinion, all of this hyperbole about Windows 8 being impossible to use is just that. It's bullshit.

Again, I am not saying everybody will or should like Windows 8. It IS in many ways a change of direction for the company; one that may jive well for people who have wholly bought into the cloud, and especially those likely to buy into multiple screens within Microsoft family (Xbox, RT, Win Phone 8 ).

While RT is going to remain a closed ecosystem, I don't believe the conventional desktop is at any risk of going away, the enterprise market is too important to MS.

Big +1 here. My 10 year old daughter had a similar encounter and can now use my laptop without very much of a transition period. She can easily move between my laptop, windows 8 pro, and my wife's with windows 7.

Is it really a bad choice? I can't say that I've had the desire, over the past month+ to use my old start menu. Even when it was available, I did not use it often. I find myself using the start menu on Win8 in conjunction with FARR, both operate in basically the same manner. Both search existing entries although the win8 menu has a noticable speed advantage over FARR.

I used to be a very big fan of developing a set of 6-7 core folders, and grouping programs based on those core folders. Now, I don't even have to worry about it. I can just hit WINKEY (or WINKEY+A for farr), type a few letters and launch all using the keyboard. No mouse involvement, no wasted time sorting through menus (even if only 2-3 deep).

I think a much smarter approach would have been to leave the original taskbar, startmenu, system tray -- which to my way of thinking are excellent, and simply replace desktop icons with the tiling system, with a simple way to toggle tiles off to yield a blank desktop (or switch between tile sets); to me this would have been so much better than the confusing approach they have come up.

Disney is buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion, adding the legendary Star Wars franchise to the entertainment giant's stable of characters. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by founder George Lucas. The purchase culminates a one and a half year pursuit of the Lucas empire, Disney's CEO said.

Lucas, who receives 40 million Disney shares from the deal, will be the second-largest non-institutional shareholder of Disney, Bloomberg News says, behind the trust of deceased Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

The 68-year-old Lucas will serve as a creative consultant but plans to retire.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," said Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm, in a statement. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers."

Said Disney CEO Robert Iger: "This is one of the great entertainment properties of all time, one of the best branded and one of the most valuable, and it's just fantastic for us to have the opportunity to both buy it, run it and grow it."

Ditto. I love system restore and have already tested the "refresh my pc" option in Win8, just because. It works and it works well.
