General Software Discussion / Re: Stay Away From Microsoft VISTA

I seem to recall $400 at the time

I just got through ordering a new Compaq laptop with Vista Basic Home, or whatever the low-end version is called, for $400 shipped.  It'll be for my mother in law, after I get it set up and working properly, and hopefully idiot-proofed (no offense, Mom, but ...).

Something like that might be an inexpensive tool for testing Vista compatibility of our own programs.  Or would it?

Norton Internet Security 2007
Norton Partition Magic 8.0
Norton Ghost 12.0

The whole enchilada can be had for $5.00 shipping + two rebates

I sent a feature request to IDM.  Got this answer back:

"Hi Mike,

Thank you for your message and the request.  I'm not sure what changes
would be required to support this option, but I will ask our developers
to consider this as an optional setting for a future release.

Thanks, Troy"

UltraEdit has FTP/SFTP and code-folding.

Along with the requested "syntax highlighting, regex search, tabs, etc.", plus a ton of other features.

Yeah, I'm a fan.  The down side is, UE is suffering more and more from the "every new release comes with many new bugs" problem.  IDM is very responsive and fixes the bugs pretty quickly, just seems like more keep showing up.

256
I understand now.  Can't help you with that one.

257
If you're talking about selecting a wrapped line, you can just save this little macro and assign it to a keystroke.

UnixReOn
Key HOME
Find RegExp Select "\p"

For me, much of the appeal of UltraEdit comes from its old-but-powerful macro language, and now it even has scripting capabilities (which I don't use).

258
Guess I'm too old to appreciate that one.

simple, clean and does what it's supposed to do

That's about the best I can hope for - "Joe Six-Pack" programming.    ;D

260
No, you're right, it's a little steep for people who already have a license.  There's nothing on version 13 that changed my life anyway, so if I go the USB route it'll be with v.12

261
There are detailed instructions on the UE forum for getting it to work from a standard USB drive, at least through version 12.20 (latest is 13.10)

Does XP count??

The developer of these two compilers (Aurora and Emergence Basic) has decided to distribute them as freeware, in the hope that charging a small fee for support coupled with much wider distribution will give him a better payback in the long run.  These are both rock-solid programs capable of producing compact, standalone Windows executables.

I use Emergence Basic to create my own commercial software.

http://www.ionicwind.com

Aurora features a syntax similar to C++ with high level commands making it ideal for students and advanced programmers alike. Aurora can create stand alone executables with no runtime libraries needed.

Main Features

    * Fast 32-bit compiler, assembler, and linker.
    * Uses standard COFF and LIB format files for maximum compatibility.
    * Easily upgradeable with add-on command libraries.
    * Integrated editor, source-level debugger, and compiler.
    * Multi-module programming supports unlimited source and include files.
    * Interfaces seamlessly with Windows™ technologies.
    * COM and OOP (class) support.
    * Supports Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista.
    * Intrinsic unicode support.
    * Linux support in development.
    * Built-in GUI/Form designer.
    * Built-in menu designer.
    * Gui, database, string, math, console, file, 2D and 3D libraries included.
    * Integrated resource compiler.
    * All tools can be run from the command line as well as the IDE.
    * Robust data type support including classes, structures and unions.

I've been using one of these lately, and it feels good to my sixty-year-old back.  I take it with me when I drive, too.  Costs sixty bucks at Amazon.

Is "beautiful code" the same thing as "elegant code"?

266
I have a total of eight years of intensive work with NT4 and XP, and I've never seen the problem.   Like others have said, it was easy to cause on 98.

General Software Discussion / Re: Converting from FLV to AVI
« on: June 02, 2007, 02:48 PM »
I've downloaded a bunch of music videos in flv format that look fine as-is in VLC Player's full-screen mode.  I had to uncheck the "overlay video output" option (Preferences > Video) to get rid of some unwanted color effects that showed up in about 50% of the videos.

"pirate" is a such too strong word for what we are talking here

Are "thief" or "parasite" more acceptable?

i'm saying giving the reward shouldn't be ENFORCED upon the user.

I know from experience, the vast majority of users will not voluntarily contribute anything in the way of financial support.  The programmer spends hundreds of hours creating something, the user is quite happy to get full benefit in exchange for a couple of mouse clicks to download and install.

Who's the greedy one?

The reward is/shoud be the joy of working on the software, and sharing it with people.

With that rationale, all programmers would have to be hobbyists or independently wealthy.

Locate "imagezoom.autofitlargeimage" and make it true

I tried that - it slowed Firefox down quite a lot and screwed up the display of my website.  Had to change back.
