General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« on: October 17, 2007, 11:34 AM »
Windows explorer (with out any add-ons, such as qt*, etc.) on XP (or < XP) is no good. Not even a match to any of the good file managers (such as the ones being constantly talked about). But with an add-on such as the qttabbar, it really makes a difference (in a good way).

and the advantage and extras gained from said third party tools doesnt really justify the added expense or reconfiguration I have to go through
 It doesn't justify 30mins - 1 hour of your life to configure/learn about a new program that could potentially/exponentially increase your productivity (such as managing files)? C'mon  ;D

Post New Requests Here / Re: Kill Multiple Processes
« on: October 15, 2007, 03:04 AM »
Any chance of making a general kill process app that allows you to kill multiple processes instead of individually? Like you have a tickbox next to each process name.

What are the explorer addons you talk of? Can you link them?

180
Come on/one, he said. So here I am - again:

To the best of my experience   none   of the apps you all have mentioned   can do better  than our standard XP's Explorer plus addons.

Tell me what it is, apart from dual panes, that I cannot do with Explorer plus addons, but that you can do with something else, please! I mean, I have (almost) tried all of them, and still I don't miss anything in my Explorer plus addons. What is it that you have, that I don't have?

And what would these be? (links???)

edit: yes the addons..

I quite like xplorer², but lately I have been using Windows Explorer (XP).. about 50/50 usage of both.. And today I discovered the QT addons for Windows Explorer thanks first to azza (and second to Curt via Quizo QTTabbar).. I was curious about these "QT" addons and found my way to the authors (Quizo's) site (not hard, I know :P) and he has 3 cool addons: QTToolBar2, QTTabBar, & QTAddressBar and I must say that I am very impressed with them! Absolutely wicked.. (Ok, back to reality..  ;D this is Windows Explorer, but really, these addons are very cool  8)).. They add so many good things to WE..

When I began using xplorer², I especially liked the double click on background to go up a dir (and still do), and noticed by accident (!! due to my x² habbits) that QTTabBar has this feature (or mini-feature, what ever.).. Quizo's software also has many other cool little things (as mentioned by Nighted).. Tip of the iceberg.. I advise any one who likes using WE over file managers to check these addons out!

I spotted this thread the other day and decided to give QTT a whirl - I'm impressed, very impressed.
That makes 2 of us.. probably a whole lot more  ;D

QT addons are very cool!

Very nice window explorer addons from this person! very nice indeed.  8)

Edit: Wow, double click on background goes up a dir! I'm in love.. been loving this feature since I started using xplorer², then today I started playing with these QT addons (or addins? :P), and double clicked on the background in windows explorer from my x² habbits, and.. AWESOME!!  :-*

Re: wiki on filemanagers... good idea. I thought "but there's one!", but I was remembering this:

This site is pretty bad ass.  8)

Should a software app be allowed to change the user's settings?
Only if the user agrees to such changes, ofcourse. Otherwise, gtfo.

186
i will amend the description of editpad pro.
mouser, you might as well completely update the official review, a lot of stuff is outdated. I've said this many times, but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen any time soon (also talking about the other outdated official reviews). Until then people will just keep complaining about them being inaccurate.

187
Hey tinjaw, very good topic and I hope a good discussion follows (I'm sure :P).

Well for me, I use AceText, I wrote a review of it just over a year ago now.. It's basically a program that stores plain text in collections, which you can further organize into folders.

AceText is not completely aimed at code storage/snippets/templates/etc. - that is, it's not made specifically for development. But it is more than capable of being used for that purpose.

For your other questions.. AceText uses xml files for data storage, which makes parsing them easy (as Allen pointed out) if needed and AceText also has a portable version (which comes with the regular version) which installs nicely to removable media.

AceText has a lot of really cool features, such as AceType. Let's say your typing in a document and want to insert a snippet, just press your AceType hotkey, AceType will then pop up with a search box which you type your label/tag/abbreviation, when typing AceType filters out the closet match to your typed text.. then just press enter and the snippet gets inserted into the previous application.

Like I said, AceText has some really nice features, I urge you to take a look at it and decide for yourself.

Mind you, there are tons of tools for snippet/code/etc. storage, each with their own pros and cons...

You can search your collections easily, using regular expressions if need, and AceText also doubles as a good clipboard manager/extender.

You could just ask them/him/her why they need that information. [And if they ask why you asked, for your own protection of course.]

he says that he wants to protect himself for when he makes his payment to me.

He does want me to sign a contract and stop distrubuting the program that his is based on.

Insurance I guess - So if he finds out that you have broken the contract in any way, i.e., started selling your own slightly modified version of his product, he can sue *some body* instead of trying to track down your net identity (which would probably be easy any how).

So I think best is to just ask why he needs what he wants and explain why you care.

189
Yes that is right Lashiec, I forgot about that one.. very useful  ;D It's a start.

edit: actually it's very similar to what I'm after, but not dead on :) but as I said, it's a start.. I'll post my "research" later on.

190
Keeping a .txt / .nfo / etc files is also handy as Lashiec and Nighted have mentioned [Nighted mentioned in IRC that he some times uses .nfo files to describe a file, etc.]. Either one big .nfo / .txt file with all the files and some descriptions, or individual .nfo / .txt files for each installer/etc. For example.. someProgramInstaller.exe, someProgramInstaller.exe.nfo (or perhaps someProgramInstaller.nfo).

Also interested to know what you guys use for your top-level folders/directories for archiving the different types of files (graphics, software, fonts, etc.). I want to try and build a complete list - ofcourse a lot of peoples will be different, but once some ideas come in, we (or just my self) can come up with (and put to use) a good categorization scheme for archiving (or sorting) your different files. Well that's the idea..

191
I am a bit of a Virgo when it comes to archiving downloads...
Ampa, what exactly does this mean?  ;D

Nighted, very nice.. things I can see:

  • you add [version] to most (or all) of your files
  • you also use a "!folder" like naming scheme for important files and/or folders - I guess to keep them in the front (if arranged alphabetically of course). ! is also my prefered character for this - some times i use an @, not a lot tho :P
  • you use quite an organized structure/hierarchy (ok maybe not hierarchy) of directories
  • x rated yahoo smilies... what the..

btw, nice theme. ;D

Carol i think the fdisk part was Ralf Maximus's solution to all the problems ;D

Me too! First time I have seen mouser ;D It's good to finally see the father of DC.

allen, noticed you removed acetext from your sig?  :o

I wanted to know how many if any (probably so..) of you archive (or store) your downloaded files, mainly program install files. Program install files include .rar/.zip/etc archives/installers, .exe installers, etc., the files that setup/install/unpack programs/files.

If so, do you have a certain way of archiving them? Do you spend a lot of time archiving them? Or just dump them into a "installers" or similar directory/folder?

Some reasons why I archive install files:
The most obvious reason is that if you ever need the install file for some/what ever reason, you have a local copy - You do not need to download the file again. This can be great for large (10mb+) & rare files. And a chore for small files, because if you need a small installer file, you probably just end up redownloading it, but this time the later version - I archive all downloaded installers.

Also some times when you want to download a file, you try to download it from the web, but some times it takes a very long time just to download a small file, either due to problems or what ever - now you either try to look for a mirror (another server/place where you can get the file) or, if you have a local copy, resort back to your local copy.

Another reason is, you may not have internet access, but you need an installer for what ever program.. your archive to the rescue :)

Some problems with archiving them:
Organizing them! If you are fussy then organizing can take up a lot of time.. too much time infact. One thing I've come to dislike is installer files without the version in their name.. some of you probably like this, but for me, it's extra work since I archive every download [Side note: I don't download a lot, but when I do download some thing I want to make sure I don't have to go thru the trouble of downloading it again, for what ever reason.]

For instace, let's say last month I downloaded skype.exe, and the version is at 3.00, now today I update my skype, and also save the .exe installer to a temp dir, ready to be sorted later.. So now I am free to do some clean up, so I go of to store skype.exe 4.00 to my Archives > Software > Messengers > Skype directory.. but hmm.. there is already a previous version of skype here with the same name (the old version).. What to do? Overwrite it with this newer version? Rename the older version? Rename the newer version... Rename both versions!? Sing the national anthem and hope they sort them selfs out!? Some of you would probably just overwrite the old version - fair enough. But myself, I like to keep versions in case I need to roll back to any one if I am having problems, missing features, disliking any version, etc. So I am left with two choice.. Rename the old, and rename the new.. Or create directories for each version.. The later is my preferred method of archiving the versions. [Mainly because searching for filenames can do wonders ] Now if the installer was named skype_4.0.0.exe, this saves me from having to create extra directories for each version.. makes sense right? I can just dump them in the Skype directory, and have a nice listing of the different versions.

Disk space is another problem - ok, not really a good enough problem, especially in todays times ;D

Any thoughts, tips, remarks?

« on: October 07, 2007, 07:53 AM »
I think I will stay on XP (and lower, if wanted/need) for a another year or 2. I've read so much bad stuff about vista...

  • requires some pretty high end hardware - some thing i don't have - to get any decent performance
  • sp1 is not out yet, and from what i hear, it's not that good and doesnt address most problems people have experienced
  • windows xp is actually pretty solid, well tweaked ofcourse

some reads:

Since we are advancing into the future (as usual), computers are getting more advanced (surprise) which probably does mean less choice/privacy/control.. i dont expect "windows 7" to be any less restrictive as vista - i think hope will be left with free os's.

The perl one was pretty good from one of the comments ;D

« on: October 05, 2007, 05:25 AM »
xplorer2 has a nice feature suited for this - Comments - check that page and read about 'em.

comments that I can easily printout with a file list or simply with associated file name
You can copy columns (including filename, size, date, comments, etc.) in x2 and paste them where you wish, like in this example:

comments_x2.jpg

ofcourse i added the proper tab amounts so they would line up nicely :) but i think this is what you are after.

198
Yep, consolas is the shiz.  ;D

199
The easiest and safest?? Idk about that  :) But for VMWARE's official source for "appliances", check the Virtual Appliance Marketplace

You can find many things to try from nix OS's, to small dev environments (small nix os set up to do dev with python, etc.), to web servers, to.. well a lot.. Check it out if you are into virtualization stuffs.
