Living Room / Re: TOR Vidalia - newest update has no control panel
« on: September 23, 2015, 07:50 PM »
I installed the newest TOR Vidalia, but it is unable to connect.
Since switching to free AVG, I don't know if it is excluding TOR or how to make it allow it, but when I disabled AVG for a moment, TOR still could not connect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: I added TOR connect and TOR.exe to my Firewall permissions, and still no success connecting.

Screen rez question for anyone please...
This show was user-edited (i.e. 'hard wired') to give quarter-screen playback.
It's built-in. How would I get it to show just the video in full-screen?

@MilesAhead I don't know any of those websites you name, so I'm unfamiliar with them.
That would be a cool idea, any kind of an Asian films thread.
The way I often find good Asian films is to start with a good film I already know, and see what other films were done by the same Producer or with any of the same actors.
Or sometimes a film by a western company may be cloned by an asian one, or vice-versa, which often works out quite well.
Or I'll see a review linking to a trailer and then check it out with rotten tomatoes or asian wiki. :)

Cellular 2004 which was given a remake into the Hong Kong film Connected 2008.
Both are energizers with nonstop action that never gets tiresome.

I haven't seen this film.  So I have no idea if this review is on the mark.  But generally this site is a good resource for Hong Kong movie reviews.  I have read it for many years.  It also has bios with pics of many HK and Chinese actors to complement sites like AsianWiki and d-addicts.

Edit:  Also if you hate Wong Jing films http://lovehkfilm.com is the site for you.  :)

Ratings do matter, but I really enjoyed Connected and thought it was an xlnt film, and if I may say so, I think ^reviewer Kozo's long-winded rating fits himself more than the film. :)
Or, let's be fair, Kozo describes it as "perfunctory, and the acting is overdone with a capital "O", but the whole thing manages to work in spite of its own rampant stupidity. 'Connected' isn't quality, but it's fun."
Sorry to disagree, but the 'Connected' I saw was delightful, exciting, well-acted, brilliant, as I put it in an earlier ^post, an 'energizer' with 'non-stop action'.
Kozo comes across to me more like an amateur headhunter Performing Arts critic.
I get the feeling Kozo wants me to attribute to himself, the excellence of qualities he claims are so sadly lacking in 'Connected', b/c I've seen 'Connected', with good English subtitles, and I liked it no end.

Interesting article from the MIT Technology Review

A Video-Game Algorithm to Solve Online Abuse

How a team of psychologists and scientists at Riot Games is unlocking the secret to eliminating abuse within an online video game.

By Simon Parkin on September 14, 2015

But there's an easier solution too. If more communities on the web could just be more like here... it would already be "problem solved."   8) ;D
^ditto. DC is a rare gem of a website.  :-*

Play it again: One fan’s quest to save old video games

(more at the link)
When the French native moved to Tokyo in 2000 to research and archive retro Japanese PC titles he was shocked to find collections left to languish within an inclusive community. He wormed his way inside through online auctions and forums to contact others who shared his passion. In 2011, he established the Game Preservation Society, an NPO to save gaming from the landfill of pop culture.

We meet at the four-story apartment, in Tokyo’s Todoroki neighborhood, that serves as the group’s workshop, archive and Redon’s residence. I admire his vision. But why would anyone today care about, say — I pull a random package from the shelf — “Morita Shogi,” an unassuming shogi (Japanese chess) simulator? Redon doesn’t miss a beat.

“Oh, Morita-san was an exceptional programmer who wrote beautiful algorithms. Computer magazines used to sponsor reader-submitted game creation contests and this title was a winner. It wasn’t unheard of to pocket ¥10 million in prize money and royalties per game.”

Redon has an anecdote for each title in his archive. The disks are more than data. They’re a record of the forgotten history that today’s gaming industry is built upon. Imagine a generation of self-taught programmers, the Bill Gates of their day, striking it rich in magazine contests before going on to develop software for Nintendo, Sega and Sony.

FWIW, in this predicament I would x-fer any recently added data to a cloned backup HD, then switch to that HD, and restore the goofed one.
But in any case I wish you success in restoring your OS.

Does anyone know where I can download free legal Public Domain ebooks in text form, working through TOR Vidalia, and without joining or registering?
For instance, Project Gutenberg has a ton of books, but won't let you access or download them through a proxie, but only in direct open unencrypted mode, which is vulnerable to cyberstalkers.
Other web sites want you to register and log in.
There are LibreVox recordings on YouTube, but sometimes the speech quality is indistinct and a little difficult to understand, and there are necessarily no subtitles.
Any text format would be fine, as I intend to play them back using my text to speech player anyway, which is easier on my eyes, and would also automatically give me built-in subtitles to be sure what is being spoken.

General Software Discussion / Re: urgent free AVG expired request!
« on: September 06, 2015, 11:48 AM »
bit, the message looks like from 'internet security' option of AVG which is in AVG PRO and can be enabled for 30 days in the free version.

AVG Free does not give any message for expiry. I have been using satisfactorily AVG Free since early days of AVG.

You may try this link http://www.avg.com/i...antivirus-protection to compare and download the free version, which will auto update but not expire. I have now AVG 2015 Free.

Regards,

Anand

^It worked, and so far so good.
I now have AVG free with no expiration date. Tnx 1000x.
Tnx also to everyone who replied, you never know when your info is going to be the key data the other person so desperately needs.

General Software Discussion / urgent free AVG expired request!
« on: September 05, 2015, 09:30 PM »
My free AVG antivirus just gave me this Desktop pop-up window.
It looks like I am being cut off even from the so-called 'free' AVG antivirus protection.
Is AVG still protecting me, or what should I do?
I still have some days left on my paid Norton I can reinstall.
Or is there any other free antivirus I should switch to?
If I'm not protected, I need someone to confirm it asap. Tnx!

edit: just found this free AVG for 365 days offer, installed it, and it looks good so far.

Okay, once and for all, I understand DC's page layout perfectly, and there is nothing wrong with it.
There is absolutely no need to rethink DC's page layout.
I picked the 'silly humor' thread, dreamed up utter nonsense, total idiocy, and ranted like it was a big huge deal.
It was supposed to be funny, and not to confuse anyone and I wasn't laughing -at- anyone.
Apologies to all, it's a joke that may have come off more as a prank or spoof.
Whenever I post to a joke thread and rant idiotically like this, it's not intended to be taken seriously.
Long live DC.

I'm just letting you guys know that there is something seriously wrong here!
If you click on 'top', it should take you to where it says 'top'.
And when you click on 'bottom', you should go to where it says 'bottom'.
It's ass-backwards! You guys? Hello?

^Mmm...yes, it's a joke. hahhhhaaahaha  :)
(this is, after all, the 'silly humor' thread)

(no harm done, I hope)

^I'm really sorry to hear of your DVD problems in Paraguay.
Since reseating my ram, my DVD burner & disks work perfectly.
But if I could afford to trade my mid-tower pc and DVD burner & disks for a mini-pc setup with 4-8GB ram and whatever peripherals I needed, I do believe I would be tempted to make the switch.
For a basic noninclusive list of mini-pc peripherals, I would need 3 duplicate HDs and cloning unit, 2 thumb drives, and I think I would actually try for an external DVD burner anyways.
Also to be able to plug in my vintage 286 key-click keyboard.
My DVD backup burning activities typically come in the 5MB to 10MB range, rarely 20MB or 30MB or more.

edit: Come to think of it, generically speaking, a DVD and a thumb drive are both 'removable media' with 'no moving parts'; so a set of 2, 3, or 4 identical large capacity, high data-rate transfer thumb drives would make a suitable upgrade/replacement for DVD disks.
To avoid virus hits or other hazards, the thumb drives would need to normally only be plugged in just long enough to write or read the backup data, and be unplugged all the rest of the time.

Cortana is an interactive virtual AI 'helper' created by Microsoft for Windows Phone 8.1 (where it now supersedes Bing Mobile), Microsoft Band, Windows 10, and coming to iOS, Android, and the Xbox One.
Firstly, here's a poster for the flick 'Ex-Machina', an innocuous but sinister robotic AI who spends most of the movie begging to be let out of the prison her creator keeps her locked up in.

^That is really awesome. I'll see if I can figure out how to do it.
I do have questions, in case anyone can please help:
Will ^this 'elevated powershell' program work in Windows 7?
(One of the above links speaks only of running in Windows 8.
What does 'elevated' mean or refer to, please?

I already found one of the four spyware updates waiting to be installed on my Win 7 Pro (which has updates turned off), and set it to be 'hidden'.

Here are some YT vids about the Win 10 spyware scene;
Windows ten spying on every image you look at.
Top 5 Reasons To Not Upgrade to Windows 10
^btw, this guy hates 'Cortana'.

Would anybody mind if I posted my pix of 'Ex-Machina' & 'Ex-Cortana' here?
I worked so hard on it, and pic-mods like this usually don't come out so well.
To really understand what the pix mean, you need to see the film 'Ex-Machina', and I'm not giving spoilers.
BTW, I did say I was going to adopt a 'wait & see' attitude towards the 'free' Windows 10 upgrade, but I make no special claim to being smarter than anybody else; I still haven't 'upgraded' to owning a cellphone either, so it's more 'attitude' for me than 'smarts'.  ;)
