Are there desktop apps for GitHub or Visualsvn? I have never used them.

Some download sites also have "editors" who create pages for software that look like the author put them there. I've had this happen with BrotherSoft for instance.

Living Room / Re: OneDrive v. Google Drive?

At first look that seems great. I wonder what I would use it for though.

For quickly storing/sharing low-priority stuff, there are so many free services, and many of them (Google Drive, DropBox, etc.) have great integration with all kinds of devices and services. And I rarely use more than a few GB for that, so unlimited storage would be a waste of money.

The other use would be for backup of my "important" files. But with no client-side encryption (I can't even tell if they encrypt the data on their end), it doesn't really beat CrashPlan/SpiderOak.

Of course it might help drive down the prices of the other services, which would be great.

The one interesting option to me would be the unlimited photo storage, which unlike some of the others supports RAW files, and promises to keep your originals. It would be a relatively cheap second online backup of all my RAW files at $12/y.

I am trying out Sticky Password as an alternative to LastPass.

That sounds a bit like what happened to my SugarSync account. Apparently, if you haven't logged in for 3 months, they delete your free account unless you pay. They do let you download your data for 7 days, but still ...

You have not used your SugarSync account in over three months. SugarSync periodically deletes accounts that have been inactive for 3 months. To save your data from deletion, please take one of the following actions in the next 7 days:

  • Upgrade to an annual plan and never worry about account expiration again.
  • Remove your data from SugarSync by following these directions.

Same here, the current upgrade price of ~AU$77 is almost more than I paid for previous versions, (2008, 2010, 2012), combined.

Considering there seems to be only the Pro version now and they no longer use a purpose designed third-party email/calendar component, it seems a little steep for those of us who use the Standard version since we didn't need the added functionality of emClient/Thunderbird, (since I already have Thunderbird).

I think you're right. If you look at their pricing for the previous and new version:

The price of the professional version is the same, but the upgrade price has doubled. And if you were using the standard edition, the upgrade price is now three times as much(!).

As far as I am aware, OneDrive does not muck about with (e.g., alter or compress) your files, whereas Google Drive does.
From experience, for documents, Google Drive/Docs will create "GDocs" copies of some of your files, and duplicate them, then later delete and update them to new formats. All without the user's say-so.

Drive -> Settings -> Convert uploaded files to Google Docs format?

^ SoftMaker Office 2016 is so expensively priced that I feel certain there is no free update from 2012, no matter how late you bought it.

I agree it feels a bit pricy -- I think I'll wait till they send out one of those ugprade specials for customers using older versions.

I wonder how software that uses machine IDs in license activation schemes will stop working. Some developers may get a lot of email come July 29th ;D.

Feature deprecation section
  • Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates.

Wait what? so if there is an update with issues on your system, you cannot stop it being applied?

Some places say the upgrade offer is available in the first year after Windows 10 is released.

Edit: The FAQ seems to cover most of these:

I am getting the same thing here

I am a little unsure if I'd want Win10 though -- Win7 has been working well for me.

Do you know your portrait resolution?

Looks like it's 1080x1920, here is a (scaled down) screenshot of what it looks like:

So, I installed this today -- looks very nice .

Some observations:

The app icon does not work well on a white background, which is the default in the app drawer in lollipop.

If holding the phone normal (non-landscape), the text indicating the last time a task was performed is broken into a lot of lines, which makes it hard to read, and take up a lot of space. Perhaps put the task name above and the text below instead of side by side in this mode?

Localization would be nice.

Is there an undo option in case you hit the NOW button by accident :-[.

As far as I know, the original author of ublock transferred ownership to someone else recently, and there was a dispute afterwards about some actions taken (something about taking credit for the extension). ublock origin was an attempt by the original author to rectify the issues he saw, but perhaps they solved it.

I got it as well, and the AdGuard people were nice enough to combine the two licenses with the one I already had (from black friday sale). So I have a new license for 3 now (easier to manage one account for me).

I haven't actually used it yet, because I still have Ad Muncher running here and, except for facebook, I see few adds. But now I will probably try it on the other computers.

Nice find .

KingSoft also has a professional version that costs a "chunk" of money.

There is a comparison page here and here, I have no idea if both are the same company, the web design is different. They also have this homepage, which appears to be the same company and office suite, but with a different name. I guess stuff like this is part of why I have been a little wary of it.

SoftMaker also has a free office suite, comparison here.

Just noticed this announced last week. It is from the author of WebSite-Watcher, which should make it worth checking out:

I'll second ManicTime, if you are looking for time tracking/management software. It stays in the background and on your computer.

Apparently all based on Mark Russinovich saying at a conference that “It’s definitely possible”.

General Software Discussion / Re: Busy Body Browsers
« on: April 04, 2015, 10:57 AM »
The only real solution, which isn't really a solution, would be to bundle a full-blown malware/AV into the browser so only genuine threats were flagged, but who in the world would want to tackle that coding job, ongoing maintenance, *and* listening to critics declare your browser as bloatware?

Surprisingly many of those also greet anything that looks even the slightest bit unusual with a big red Threat Found! dialog saying the user has something along the lines of Yadayada.Win32.Malware.generic-- where the thing to note is the generic keyword, but what most users will think is just "OMG I ran that file and I got a virus".

It's hard when most users have little idea what threats are, and it's safer for protection software to warn on anything to not risk missing a detection.

[/AV Rant]

Looks like Ghostery took care of them, so they do not bother me :P.

Pretty Run is actually mentioned in the FARR manual under related programs.

I have always thought it was a nice gesture of mouser to list the competition :-[.
