My replies going to be similar to Superboyac.

Generally all audio editing software use exactly the same methods to edit, the layouts, the tool funtions etc, all based on the late 70`s DAW`s.

Now, looking at your specifics, it looks like your looking for some "auto takes" system. The best auto take system ive come across is sony`s sound forge. It can be set up to automatically create regions for multiple takes , also auto rewind for re-takes and automatic punch in settings (punch means it records to a specific time). Unfortunatly Soundforge is not meant for multiple layering of recordings, its a pure editing tool, its not a multitrack application. But it will work with mp3 nativly (well, in a way you wont notice.) Just a note, its generally a bad idea to edit from mp3 as everytime your editing and saving your loosing bits of audio data as its re-compressing.

I personally dont really bother that much with automatic auto takes, i prefer to do everything in post, once everything has been recorded. You`ll find it probably a lot easier to edit a single long audio file with all the takes already recorded, rather than trying to get the takes right during the recording . If you say after every take go "BEEP" very loudly (or generate a test tone) after every take, you`ll find it very easy to visually see your takes on the waveform. But that of course is all down to personal preference of working.

The august DC podcast was mastered with the following

Adobe Audition
Sony Soundforge (only to edit out some bizarre audio headers in audacity`s file format that audition didnt like)
(admitidly , total overkill for a simple podcast, but i have them anyway)

JavaJones uses a free app called Audacity to record his segments, and does a fine job, its also muti tracking (in a basic sense)

Another of couple of apps to check out (that are not free, in fact a bit pricy) would be:

Sony`s Acid (has a built in sample editor), Acid is really designed to be a loop based multitrack editor, and the tools that go with it reflect that, but can be used just as well as a basic multitracker.
Cubase SX (as mentioned by superboyac)

Also not forgetting this post here
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4551.0 , which actually may be an ideal solution. (its basically a free Adobe Audition), and even better it supports VST so you can download filters and compressors to tidy up the audio (especially if your working with a cheap mic)

is another free one , i think, im sure it is, there no payment options on the website anyhow, clients a bit hefty at 20mb, but seems to run ok.

I still like the idea of running around Unreal Tournament and shooting the crap out of you all.

Or alternativly we could all just get everyone to design an avatar, print them out , and attach them to our monitors with double  sided sticky tape while talking on IRC

ok, in the middle of us all..hmm , well that would propably be kiritimati island (blame the australians for messing up the average distance), its a lovely little rock , isolated, probably no wi-fi access however. Strong swimming ability recommended.

I used to be like innuendo, as im pretty messy by nature. But after trying to scan 343 icons because windows decided to re-arrange them "because it felt like it"  i decided to get organise, and minimal is now my thing. I now shudder and despise messy desktops, a bit like an annoying ex-smoker who down the pub surrounded by smokers.

General Review Discussion / Re: Trillian
« on: August 06, 2006, 11:28 PM »
Well, apart from being on the beta testing list , ahem

I just personally found Trillian more intuitive overall and a lot more slicker (admitidly thats asthetic rather than practical) .At the time of decision i also found out GAIM was a hell of a memory hog and miranda was buggy as hell, especially with using multiple plugins. Admitidly thats not the case anymore. I also use audio conferencing and video chat now and again, GAIM just didnt cut the mustard for me on them features.

Of course theres also je nai se qua  to take into account.

trillian.jpg

Intro:

Trillian originaly was released a good few years ago in 2000 as a solution for cross IM service messenging (despite the hostile action from certain companies to prevent 3rd party access to there services). This current version now supports connection to AIM,ICQ,MSN,Yahoo Messenger, IRC, Jabber,Rendezvous and Novell Groupwise Messenger. It supports pretty much all the features of the native clients its emulating (Voice, Video, File Transfer etc) and recently its been able to interface with Skype (via plugin) for VOIP calling

Who is this app designed for:

If you use Instant Messenging a lot, and you`ve over the years acquired multiple ID across the different networks this app is ideal.

The Good

First of all it has an excellent plug in engine with a wide variety of plugins to choose from, including email checkers, remote control for winamp, system stats. Literally hundreds to choose from. It also has a XML based skinning engine that makes it easy to customise to fit in with your desktop. It offers a tabs feature that makes it very easy to organise  that bursting contact list and the import of existing contacts is a breeze. It also has a nice little docking feature to keep contol of the conversations your paying attention to. It also comes a nicely laid out options screen (this app has LOADS of options) to help set it up the way you want it.

The needs improvement section

Some skins can be a little hit and miss, mostly due to Trillian not being 100% backward compatible with older ones.

Why I think you should use this product

Products like that are down to personal choice on how you respond to the "feel" of the app. I`ve been using trillian since 2000 and have seen it grow up into the fine piece of software it is today. I think it offers more features and customisation than anything else out there.

How does it compare to similar apps

Similar apps for IM interoperability include Miranda and Gaim, both of which ive installed and used during the "shall i pay to go pro" stage. I stuck with trillian.

Conclusions

Well as ive been using this App in one form or another for 6 years id have to be a sadist not to give it 5 out of 5. Its all you need to communicate to your friends, collegues and family accross the wide spectrum of IM protocols out there. Did i mention the plugins?

BUT, I have yet to see a PC that explodes when its NOT PLUGGED IN.

Um , it`s happend to PC laptops quite a few times recently. Lithium Ion Batteries are extremely dangerous if mistreated or get to hot or get Short-circuited. Most laptops, be it apple or PC use Litium Ion batteries

General Review Discussion / Daemon Tools

Trial Version Available?Daemon Tools is free (but it isnt freeware)
Pricing SchemePro version £TBA

DT1.jpg

Intro:

Daemon Tools is a virtual CD/DVD-ROM emulator, it basically takes an image of a CD/DVD from your your Hard drive and mounts it as a Physical Drive

Who is this app designed for:

The app due to its emulation of copy protection schemes has gained popularity for people who wish to play from there CD backups and keep the original media safe. Aside from that its just a very good all purpose CD/DVD Tool.

The Good

Daemon Tools for me is integral to my Operating System. Having tons and tons of material spread over shiny discs i have to physically hunt for is just not the way i work anymore. Creating images of these discs and keeping them on a server is part of my workflow, with a couple of clicks i have a CD/DVD mounted without the delay of motors spinning up and slow seek times. Using VMWare is great with Daemon tools as i can download the latest Distro image and not have to waste a CD to install it. If i need to check out if the menu structure of a DVD is programmed correctly, i dont have to burn, i just mount. Anything i have to distribute on CD/DVD i can check it without having to burn discs.

The needs improvement section

The recent versions have got an annoying "WhenU SaveNow" searchbar installer , which is opt out as long as you remember to unselect it during installation

Why I think you should use this product

Because like all great apps you dont know it`s there, but if it isnt there you miss it.

How does it compare to similar apps

There are a couple of other virtual drives out there, Nero Drive mounter for one which comes with Nero Burning Rom , but everything else just seems clunky in comparison.

Conclusions

It does exactly what it says on the tin,  5 out of 5

Podcast Radio Show / Podcast #4 Submission Time!
« on: August 02, 2006, 04:57 PM »
Hi

The time has come where the 4th Donation Coder podcast needs to start being nailed down and getting prepared for the August Broadcast.

The production of the Podcast has been deligated to JavaJones and me Mukestar (I use the term delegated loosly, as in “Ghengis Khan deligated his way into northern China”)

We`ve got a couple of new idea to introduce a monthly format flavour to the podcast, and turn it into a mean lean podcasting machine (think George Forman grill with a USB connector).

The  podcast can only exist if we can get the continual support from all you  Donation Coder members out there, and this is who we need.

1. YOU
We would like to introduce a monthly feature where a member tells us who they are, where there from, what they do, there first PC, there hates, there loves. You get the idea. An Audio version of the “OK-Lets get to know each other” thread on the forum. So come on tell us who you are, speak out be it funny or serious – its all good.

2. SOFTWARE REVIEWERS
We want people to give us a concise review of the software they love or loathe, the piece of code they cant live without , the piece of code they cant live with. The best review for a piece of software is from the people who actually use it day to day. Get recording.

3.ARTICLES AND FEATURES
More “Man on the street” interviews please
More Interviews full stop
Articles related to the wonderfull world of computers

4. Ranters
Everyone can rant, ranting is good for you. We like rants.

And remember

Just noticed that people where asking about alternative codecs for the cast, not a problem. Vorbis, WMA,IFF,Mp3,Impala,ADPCM,G.726 whatever you like , the masters going to be batched encoded anyhow so not a problem. JavaJones has even volunteered to hand deliver 4-track versions of it

Damn beat me to it.

I was reading them over the weekend. Dont think they`ll give people with common sense any new insight, but at least you`ll know the real pschological terminology for a script kiddies, flamers, trolls and n00bs

Or alternativly when mapping the drives selecting "Connect using a different user name" and using the user and pass to how its set up on the server. As long as reconnect at login is selected it should remeber the name and pass.

Does this version manage to properly render .PNG images , i.e it can handle .PNG with transparency alpha layers.

General Software Discussion / Re: Scripting vs. Programming
« on: July 28, 2006, 06:37 PM »
I actually got it from my old boss, we had a web designer trying to chat up the receptionist and was telling her he was a programmer, and my boss shouted across the room

"Your not a F****ng programmer, you wouldn`t know a variable if it bit you on the arse"

Oh happy days

43
Hey

Im an experienced sound editor (worked in Broadcast enviroment). If you need a hand mixing, editing and mastering only to pleased to help.

44
Woah, Id never put faith in Raid 1,  I would in Raid 5. :)

And you werent being harsh, im just used to working with Huge files that are quite frankly impracticle to back up. Its just down to what your using your PC for.  But your right , theres no escaping the fact if youve overwritten a file , youve overwritten a file, and unless your a dab hand with MFT records (or have something like r-studio installed) , your going to need a backup.

45
Ok, i see your point and stand corrected.

47
Ahem

Also, Ideally I want a program that can keep a copy of EVERY FILE in use in the system.

Which sounds like a good use of Mirroring, dontcha think

Anyway, asking someone to repeat something 1.000 times is basically just repeating it once, you`d make a rubbish teacher  :P

48
As drives are cheap, why not just go for a raid 1 configuration.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Maya for Free
« on: July 28, 2006, 02:41 PM »
The biggest problem with the different modeling tools is that there is a big learning curve from moving from one app to the next, in fact i cant think of any other "craft" that has such a big jump between apps.

Anyhow, if you want to get your toes wet into the 3d modeling world (and maya wont be getting your toes wet, its jumping in with a brick tied to your leg) i recommend some of Daz3d products to get you used to the concept of 3d modeling and animation http://www.daz3d.com  . There carrera basic is brilliant.

WOW, thanks guys , im really chuffed on the win, havent won anything since 1984, and that was a goldfish that died on the way home. WinISO was an App i was currently evaluating cos Windows Server 2003 Web edition (personal webserver)  is a pile of pants that doesnt allow you install daemon tools and i needed to mount install images. Thank you , thank you, thank you.
