Living Room / PC-Centric to PDA-Centric... Thoughts?
« on: August 30, 2009, 12:52 PM »
Hi,

I have been re-evaluating my PC-Centric lifestyle and have done a fair amount of reading on the subject of cutting the umbilical and becoming PDA-Centric, specifically, BlackBerry-Centric.  I am particularly interested in anyone that has tried this with the BlackBerry, but I welcome all input.

I can't cut myself off completely (Adobe PhotoShop, SoundScape, etc.), but I am wanting to ween myself off my PC as much as practicable.

Given this post, my vote should be obvious.  :P

Fair winds,
 -CT

I recently asked about having a flag to let me know at-a-glance if I had any new PMs.  This was resolved quite well, but has since highlighted another deficiency(?).

In the header there is the line...

Show new replies to your posts (unreplied topics).

Unfortunately, unless one clicks on the link(s) there is no way to know if there are any items that need attention.  Would it be possible to add "flags" like...

Show new replies to your posts... 8 new (unreplied topics... 5 new).

... or something adequate to allow not wasting time clicking on links that has nothing new?

If there is a setting which may turn "this" on, please advise.

TIA

Living Room / Where did your DC user I.D come from?
« on: June 02, 2009, 07:51 PM »
CodeTRUCKER here!.
Ever wondered where that appellation came from?  Ok, maybe not, but in the last three years I have often wondered where the different UIDs originated. Names like "allen," "mrainey" and "zridling" are not too tough to guess at but, nicknames like, "Tinjaw," "app103," "f0dder" "Ampa" and "Innuendo" intrigue me.  There has to be a story behind those monikers, for sure.  Take mine; for instance,... "CodeTRUCKER."

My UID, "CodeTRUCKER" was born because I have been a professional TRUCKER for 20+ years and I own (as in, "paid for") my Volvo VNL770 tractor.  I am a degreed Computer Programmer, but I still can do a modicum of "Code"-ing, in spite of the degree. :P  The only thing is, this has backfired among my associates.  Read on...

The world of the Trucker is laden with regulations and "codes" we have to adhere to in order to operate and my fellow-truck drivers ALWAYS read my "CodeTRUCKER" as me being a goody-two-shoes driver that never breaks any law and only does everything "by the book."  I have to explain that I "code," as in "program" computers to keep the lynch mobs to a minimum.

Ok, now it is your turn.  While I hope no one feels compelled to reveal any deep, dark secrets, I am persuaded that I am not the only one who was curious when seeing a post by "Mouser." :)

General Software Discussion / Attention: All TheBAT! users!
« on: June 01, 2009, 11:39 PM »
I have been chasing rabbit trails for several days.  I think I may have finally ferreted out the problem being Avast! AV Home , but before I proceed any farther I would like to know if anyone has been using TheBAT!(4.0.38), AntiSpamSniper and Avast! together without problems of major slowdown and errors like...

Connection to host broken (last commands sent were: "DELE 414", "RETR 423"

80
I have been trying to re-establish  TheBAT! as my primary email client, but I have been stuck on the following log error for days and nothing I have tried has helped.

6/1/2009, 01:01:17: FETCH - receiving mail messages
 6/1/2009, 01:01:18: FETCH - connected to POP3 server
 6/1/2009, 01:01:18: FETCH - authenticated (plain)
 6/1/2009, 01:01:26: FETCH - 12730 messages in the mailbox, 12308 new
!6/1/2009, 01:02:47: FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were: "DELE 414", "RETR 423")

Other than the times and the number of messages the logs are always the same.  I realize "DELE 414", "RETR 423" means Delete message 414 and Retrieve message 432, respectively, but what I do not understand is WHY it is hanging on those messages?

The next step will be to destroy my TB! mail file and re-download all the mails from the server.  I don't mind this, except I have over a hundred folders (years of mails) and about the same number of filters.

Living Room / Members Only! A good way to randomly view DC
« on: May 30, 2009, 01:44 PM »
DonationCoder has a huge database of discussions ranging in subject matter from "cooking" to "18-wheelers."  There is also a good bit about computers, technology and coding too!

The next time you have some time to kill, may I invite you members to try the following...

  • Click on the top-level "DonationCoder.com Forum" Llink.
  • At the bottom of the listings click on the link that will look something like, "270 Guests, 31 Users (2 Hidden)"
  • On the page that presents itself, peruse the list at your leisure.

It is kind of like "surfing the web" since you will be looking at what different people are viewing.  When I have done this I have never failed to discover a discussion I had never seen before that was interesting/informative or just plain fun!

Next time you find yourself on DC without a specific purpose give it a try and see if you do not find something you have not seen before.

Enjoy! :)

Living Room / "Check mail every ??? minutes"
« on: May 23, 2009, 12:53 PM »
One of the really fun things about DC is how we can satisfy our whims! :D

I was surveying my email settings and when I saw the "Check mail every..." setting, I wondered how all the fine folks at DC used it. So, voila!  Here you go!

The poll is "blind" until you cast your vote to keep from being influenced beforehand, but you can change your vote later if you need to.

Enjoy!

Site/Forum Features / Read/Unread PM Counts
« on: May 22, 2009, 01:37 AM »
At the top of my DC pages I see...

"You have XXX messages.  Give out some credits."

... is it possible to reformat that to...

(Idea 1) "You have XXX Unread and YYY Read messages.  Give out some credits."

... or even a more spartan...

(Idea 2) "You have XXX/YYY messages.  Give out some credits."

I never can remember what my last count was, so I never know when I actually have new ones.  As a result I have to keep deleting them to keep it simple.

I had to re-install EN, but I never had a license as I always used the lose-features-after-trial "free" demo version.  I have decided I want to go ahead an purchase a license for EN 2.2 (do not like the "new-improved" 3.0 web version), but when I went to register I found the following...

"... Scroll down to purchase EverNote 2.2. First, let us introduce you to the new Evernote —the only note taking service that makes all your notes and memories accessible across all the devices and platforms that you use. The best part: it's free!
Introducing the new Evernote...[blah, blah, blah]"

 Further down the page...

"Fatal error: Call to undefined function __() in /home/vhosts/trunk/new.evernote.com/about/promo/index.php on line 102"

I do not know PHP, but the "function __()" seemed kind of odd to me.  It is exactly the same message at any time on every browser I have tried.

In your opinion, is this a real "Fatal Error," or just a subtle, "you can not register Evernote 2.2 anymore" statement.

TIA

BillP is having a birthday and is celebrating by offering WinPatrol Plus for $14.98 according to the website.

Click here --->  BillP Studios

This is one program that should be on every computer!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that BillP never charges for upgrades (Thanks, cyberdiva:Thmbsup:)

FYI - BillP has also offered WinPatrol (standard) for years at no cost.

I often "watch" the "who's doing what" feature of the forums and at times have been intrigued by interest patterns of the viewers.  Following members is a cinch (yes you are being watched... but not cataloged  :P), but "Guests" present a problem.  I often let this list direct my interest exploring DC and being able to discern if there really is interest or just the random wanderings of many "Guests" would be helpful

If it was desirable, is there a way to say enumerate "Guest0001," "Guest0002," etc. without being intrusive?  The purpose is not to be Big Brother, but to give each visitor some "identity."

Like I said in the subject,"... maybe the worst idea ever...," but I thoght I'd live dangerously.  Anyway, what's the worst that could  happen?

88
After my L-A-S-T catastrophic loss of my hard-earned data, I have spent a lot of time researching backups and online backup services.  In doing so, something kept crawling up my spine I couldn't identify until today...

There was not a single word on including online backups in a last will and testament!

The obligatory search on Google for "online backups and your last will and testament" yielded not a single hit on this subject that I could detect, of course your mileage may vary.

Regardless of your station in life... You, your likes, dislikes, convictions, and even what you do for fun are summarised in what you leave behind to your decendants.  These bits and pieces will be of immense intrinsic value.  I can only imagine what my great, great, great grandchildren will experience when they view, listen to and read the collection of my personal treasures!

Think about how tragic it would be to amass a digital history of one's personna only to leave it to NO posterity whatever!  To be sure there may be items included that you would best leave to oblivion, but I task the reader to take whatever action he/she deems appropriate so their heirs may "eat the chicken without having to spit out the bones."

The point is if you have never considered this aspect of your eventual probate, you have a very important item for your priority "To Do" list!

"I did some research on the Internet and discovered that 10 out of 10 people die."
                                                                                         - Roger Bennet

(A personal note to my international readers... please excuse me if I have not represented your countries customs correctly in regard to a "will" or "probate.")

Fair winds,

General Software Discussion / Apps won't open?
« on: June 24, 2008, 12:44 PM »
I have two apps that have just stopped opening on my HP Laptop 3GB RAM Vista 32 Home Premium...

Both are Java-based apps, I believe.  When I try to execute the apps the "busy" mouse shows for a second and then... nothing.
No other programs seem to have this issue.  What can cause this?

FYI - XoftSpy and Avast! show no malware.  Also, no problem opening Open Office.

Living Room / CAD as artistic expression turned into a business
« on: June 16, 2008, 09:22 PM »
Textual Creations is is a site where a man found an outlet of artistic expression through the use of CAD, specifically TurboCAD.  Since I first discovered his site (see below) he has become quite an instructor and now makes a living in enjoying his recognized talent and just plain hard work.  He is also something of an author, but I've never read him.  I've just enjoyed looking at the pictures and being provoked toward my own artistic bents.

His name is Don Cheke from Canada, eh, and his site is Textual Creations.

FYI - While he does "sell" his work and services, this is no way spam as I receive nothing from offering this except the satisfaction of sharing a success story.  :)

Enjoy!

Living Room / A new paradigm as the ultimate defense
« on: March 20, 2008, 04:09 AM »
On the heels of the attack against DC recently, I began to wonder if a different kind of thinking, a new paradigm shift might provide the ultimate defense against attack?  I really don't have my head around all that I'm thinking yet, but I wanted to ask if you erased the mechanics of DC and redrew it on a clean white sheet, what might it look like?

I'll post later as the fog clears, but I wanted to provoke a discussion.

Please only post positive ideas at this juncture as there will be plenty of opportunity later to criticize.  I would like to let the creative juices flow for a while.

Thank you,
CodeTRUCJKER

Hello All,

I would like to touch on (ever so delicately) the "pain" felt by the absence of DC on our browsers while the DC-Team was working their tails off.  Now... I don't want to stir up a hornet's nest nor do I want to cause a big ruckus about Gri and "Grivitation," but it is only fair that this be addressed, given how Gri has been made the butt-end of some chuckles and guffaws on DC at times.   Ironically, if Gri were watching the latest goings-ons he might have had the last laugh.

Regardless of what you think of Gri and his weird (to the western world) style of communication, *IF* we had somehow adopted at least a tolerant mindset and tried to understand "Grivitation" the loss of connection with each other during the loss of the forums would have been non-existent and an antidote to "withdrawal" that so many expressed.

I'm not smart enough to understand all of the mechanics of Grivitation, but I do understand that it is a methodology whereby communication and thereby relationships (read: DC Community) are not restricted to a single conduit and therfore NOT vulnerable to injuries caused by attack/damage of the recent sort.  As I said, I'm not smart enough to understand the way Grivitation works in the nitty-gritty (perhaps Gri does?), but the real fix is not a new server, but a new paradigm.  As long as our connections/communications/relationships are sequestered to a single interface vulnerability cannot be eliminated.  The stronger you make a fortress, the greater the destruction *when* (not *if*) it is finally compromised.

I don't have the answer (yet?), but there are a lot of bright, creative and intuitive folks around these parts.  A Grivitation-like paradigm has additional benefit, but I think I've said enough.

FYI - This is not a note in support of Gri or an attempt to condone his actions/inactions.  If you have comments about Gri, please take it to another thread.  This is an attempt to suggest we might think "outside the box" (maybe we need a whole new box) in regard to "forum" structure and interraction.

Something to think about...

Find As You Type for Internet Explorer

Stays out of your way until you need it.  When you need it just "CTRL + F" and start typing!  Works just like FF, Maxthon and Opera, but with some options.  Source code in all languages is available and the developer has other software too!

Enjoy!  :)

This is only a pointer to this post.

Please keep in mind that this is for Outlook 2002, but I wouldn't be surprised if it worked in other versions too. :)

Below is some code I scavenged from the Internet for a macro that will take attached images in Outlook 2002 and display them in a window.

Does anyone know how to intercept an email w/ pix attchments in a locale Outlook client and "rewrite" the HTML so the pix display in the body automagically?

I have tried some experiments with the code below, but I don't know how to intercept the email before it is displayed in my client.

Is this possible?

Thanks! :)

Hi,

Anyone know of a full-blown PIM that will allow dual-direction synching with my Palm T|X?  The PIM must have the following...

  • Email client that can display inline-HTML images as well as displaying image attachments inline.
  • Calendar
  • Task Manager, preferably with the ability to have the tasks integrated with the Calendar so Due Dates are displayed.
  • Memos, Letters and large Writings (small novels, etc.)

Some things that would be nice to have are...

  • Create/play sound files for relaxing or verbal emails.
  • One-click integration with a Text-to-Speech reader.

My laptop is useful, but I need to be ale to pop the PDA in my pocket and step away from my laptop quite often.

I have been searching this forum's history and have read everything I can find on DC, but without success.  I have searched the internet as well.

The best combo discovered so far is...

  • Outlook 2002 (I have a license) - Outlook is the only one I have found with the One-Click TTS.
  • Agendus Pro by iambic.
  • Documents-To-Go.
  • Text Aloud or NaturalReader
  • <Off Topic> IE7 also has the "One-Click" buttons too. </Off Topic>

While this setup can fill my needs, I am interested to see if anyone knows of a comprehensive alternative.

Thank you. for your help. :)

Out of 130+ views of the "Phase I" thread there have been 13 responses to this point.  This provides a represents sample of a 10% response rate, but out of that 10%, 11 out of 13 responses were either "Yes" or "Yes and I would like to help!" This equates to a positive response of 85%!  There have been no dissenters and only two of the responses were neutral.

Given the above, it appears that it is safe enough to move forward with "Phase II - Ideas for Implementation."

FYI - I have copied the ideas from the previous thread to this one for your convenience.

Keeping in mind that this should remain a membership-driven and membership-maintained initiative, is a wiki the only/best course to follow?  What other ideas does anyone else have in mind?

Also, the only way this will come to reality is if the workload of initial implementation and maintenance is not over-burdensome.  What is realistic for DonationCoder?

@Mouser - is establishing a wiki with a membership-only, minimum post count requirement (per f0dder) a doable and realistic plan?  Can the "wiki" be set up with minimum of inconvenience to you and the staff?  Further, how would a "wiki" dovetail into the tagging initiative?

@f0dder & @Ampa - you both indicated that there would be considerable maintenance required to make a "wiki" work.  Could you please explain in detail?

Everyone - For those that have not yet expressed your level of "Interest" in this project, please vote in the poll and leave a comment about your feelings/thoughts in the DC User's Resource - Phase I (Interest survey - Please post comments) thread and then return here to offer your ideas/plans on how to make this happen.

Thank you.

Everyday various member's offer advice and experience on a variety of topics in differing threads across DonationCoder.  Although this information is available today, it will be gone tomorrow. Are we interested, as a community, in preserving the knowledge that, like a river comes and goes by the minute?  I am aware the present search feature can help one locate terms related to the item, but is this adequate as a usable "reference" tool?

Please note that this is a "grass-roots" initiative.  The effort will be a member-driven methodology that will require a minimum of DC Staff involvement (less than 15 mins.).  Also, at this juncture, what this may look like at the end is not yet known.

This is a poll to determine if there is interest in this type of initiative.  If there is sufficient interest, then we can examine format/mechanics/etc. ideas later.

Thank you.
