General Software Discussion / DC Computer Defense Resource
« on: January 31, 2008, 12:02 AM »
In reading the various threads on computer security I  noticed they were loaded with useful information.  Unfortunately, as time passes the information will be lost to other threads as new discussions push the present ones down and eventually out of sight and out of mind.

Although, I have focsed on Computer Defense, this framework or something else like it could be extended to a lot of different things.  The whole idea is not to lose the treasures to replacement and obscurity.

In another thread about computer security Target said ..."There is no silver bullet."  He is correct.  As I have been reading the threads I have noticed that what is one's "panacea" ends up being an other's "bane."

This got me to thinking that maybe the bulls-eye is not defined correctly.  There have been numerous attempts to isolate the "Best {Fill in the blank} Security" software for any particular purpose, but this focuses on Computer Defense specifically.  The sad news is that these threads/topics, although loaded with valuable insights and advice are/were not/never coalesced into a usable reference tool.

---===o===---

As mentioned before, the security solutions for some work and for others it is a parasite.  Maybe the community could best be served by preserving something of a resource and let everyone do due diligence and make their own decisions from an organized record that we could build.  "Threads" could be the "Categories" and the "Posts" could be a concise record in some standard format (see below) like the "Reviews" format  that would include a particular member's experience, like a description, performance, caveats, general comments/recommendations/warnings.

The plethora of solutions could be formatted to provide a usable and evolving tool for DC and others.  Since adding a "record" would be voluntary no one would be "forced" to participate and each member could submit as many "Posts" as they have softwares as it creates another reference record that would be valuable to others.

This "tool" would be completely "grass-roots" developed and produced no "Tech Staff" time or resources would be necessary, except that if we did it well enough, Mouser just might make the threads "stickys" and set the first post as a "read only" template to be copied and filled in by each member.

It would be a good idea to refrain from conversation or quote to keep the thread tidy.  Instead of a "Mini-Review," think of the individual "Posts" as "Micro-Reviews." ( FYI - This would in no way replace the "Mini-Reviews" members graciously provide for our benefit.)

---===o===---

As I see it, regardless of the O/S there are some basic threat categories.

-=o=-  Inbound Network threats - malware/hacker that attacks the computer from an external source.
-=o=-  Onboard Threats - Installs of softtware from downloads/CDs/DVDs/USBs/etc.
-=o=-  InternalResident Threats - Trojans, virii, etc.
-=o=-  Outbound Threats - "Phone home"-type spyware, etc.
-=o=-  Interface Threats - Think "phishing" scams.

Others are far more versed in these subjects than I and could add/modify, but these are what I perceived to be top-level divisions.

General Software Discussion / Opera Browser Power-User Mods
« on: January 26, 2008, 11:26 AM »
I have heard there are *.ini files or other files in Opera that will allow numerous modifications to the browser and its functions.

What are these files and what is the best mod you have found most beneficial?

Thank you for your help in advance!

General Software Discussion / Attention Mod
« on: January 25, 2008, 04:18 PM »
Maybe this is already in effect, but in 15 months of participating/lurking on this board, I have not seen it.

What we're talking about is a forum modification/device/method that will "call" any particular member to a discussion rather than just hoping they drop in.  Here is a tangible example.

Imagine being in a thread where the issue of servers arises and no one on the thread is particularly versed in servers, it would be beneficial IMO to be able to "call" f0dder.  You might add to the bottom of your post in that thread...

"Attention:: @f0dder@ - we need assistance with some aspects of servers, can you help?"

The next time f0dder logs in or if he is online and clicks to the next page a similar window to the announcement that he has PMs waiting would alert f0dder to check his "call box" or display the "call" with a suitable link that would allow f0dder to go directly to the thread and offer whatever he would.

Likewise if there was a discussion on UltraEdit, a "call" could be dispatched for @zridling@ and @mrainey@.  A discussion on Microsoft could call @Veign@ and one on Python might "call" @tinjaw@, etc.  Oh and we would need @CarolHaynes@ if we had a discussion on the English equestrian scene. :)

I am sure you get the idea and I think there would be great value with instant R.O.I. rather than relying on chance, but this is only my view.  I can tell you I would have used such a mod twice yesterday, if it had already been available.

What do you say?    Could you have used it? :feedback:

[Disclaimer - the use of "f0dder," "zridling," "mrainey," " Veign," "tinjaw" and "Carol Haynes" are only for example due to their related involvements with the subjects and does not suggest that they should be involved in any way.]

This may seem simplistic, but it worked for me.  All I did was rename (not copy) the numeric part of the prolile folder name and in the "profile.ini".

I changed my original profile folder name from...

97234.default  (your number part of the name will be different)

to...

     12345.default

I followed with going up one level and editing the "profiles.ini" line from...

     Path=Profiles/97234.default

to...

     Path=Profiles/12345.default

I saved the "profiles.ini" and fired up T-Bird and My mail was back!  The only caveat was I had to re-install all my Add-ons.  I am still working on how to make them re-appear.

Hope this works for you too!

Update...

I did some more experimenting and I found the following...

-=o=-  I was able to rename the profile folder/path entry to anything  I tried "jhasdjdf034ai7uha4n80q734uih80qhcv8734hn.default" this was just random jibberish and it worked just fine.  I also tried using a single character or number and that worked too.  It seems that any matched string will work, but I put mine back to the original, just in case.

-=o=-  I also found that to restore all my Add-ons all I had to do was go into the Tools >> Add-Ons and select any one of them and then re-select the same one.  I exited out of Thunderbird and re-opened it to find all my extensions back and working perfectly.  Please note it was not necessary to select/deselect each one.

-=o=-  I was also able to duplicate the dreaded "Thunderbird is already running..." error message and I was able to fix it.  The fact is that Thunderbird was not running.  This is why you can't go into the Processes and turn it off.  It isn't there.  It is not running.

I was able to reproduce the error at will by making any kind of incongruent change in the number part of the "Path=Profiles/54321.default" line in the "profiles.ini".  Like making it Path=Profiles/5432.default" WHILE Thunderbird was running.  I wasn't able to make the change like this to the "54321.default" in the profile follder since it was being used.

It appears that when Thunderbird is opened it checks to make sure that something in the "54321.default" is not open (maybe the folder itself) and it checks against what is in the "profiles.ini "Path=Profiles/54321.default".  I really don't know for sure, but what I do know is if these two are not matched then Thunderbird assumes it is running because it appears to T-Bird that the profile folder is not available and produces the "Thunderbird is already running..." error.  The good news is that it is easy to fix!  You need to make the "Path=Profiles/54321.default" line in the "profiles.ini" and the "54321.default" folder name match and it will work AFAICT.   As a final experiment I renamed them both to "mouser" without the ".default" part and it worked just fine.  :D

-=o=-  Conclusion - The reason this error appears is somehow the profile folder name or the "Path" information becomes corrupt in memory and when you try to open T-Bird it throws the error.  I am guessing it has to be in the memory or registry(?) because I never was able to see any visual corruption other than my own intended discrepancies.  Since the corruption has occured before I figured this out, I was not able to verify if there had actually been a name/path change.  If any of you are experiencing the "Thunderbird is still running..." error, I would be interested to have you look at the profile folder name and the "Path" line in the "profiles.ini" and report back if you did or did not see a discrepancy.

Your mileage may vary, but it was completely consistent for every experiment I tried.  I am not a "Guru" or hacker.  I just tried something and it worked for me.  Maybe it will for you too!

Lastly, if you have any kind of corruption with T-Bird that makes it unusable, regardless if you get "Thunderbird is still running..." error, please try the renaming as outlined above and post back with the results.

Hope this helps someone. :)

Developer's Corner / AHK Capability
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:08 PM »
I have not used AHK and am not familiar with the syntax.  I am interested if AHK has any limitations on  outline or "tree" functionality.  If I present a window with numerous/multiple checkboxes and press a "Next" buttion I will be presented with another set of windows based on the check boxes selected where there may be additional selections and so forth.  Here is the logic structure as I envision it...
  • Select A
    • Select A1
      • Perform Function 1
    • Select A2
      • Perform Function 2
    • Go Back
  • SelectB
    • Select B1
      • Perform Function 3
    • Go Back
  • SelectC
    • Select C1
      • Select C1a
        • Perform Function 4
      • Select C1b
        • Perform Function 5
        • Perform Function 6
        • Perform Function 7
      • Go Back
    • Select C2
    • Go Back
  • Select D
    • Close

It is a simple tree, but in some cases above there would have been as many as four more levels to drill down to.

Can AHK handle this?  I am not opposed to learning AHK if it is the best tool. :)  Any comments?

Can AHK build/demolish paths dynamically based on user input?

What language is AHK most like?

Living Room / An apology
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:11 AM »
Hello All,

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for causing such a disruption in the "flow" of DC. :(   My reason for taking my actions were not intended to harm and I feel I had valid reasons for trying to communicate something out of frustration I wasn't capable of doing verbally...

... but regardless of my intentions, the results were not painless for many and for that I am truly sorrowful.  Please accept my apologies for any harm you may have incurred.

"Thank You" to Mouser and the senior staff for allowing my return.

I am glad to be back.

Is there a way to get that file back?  Is there a temporary hiding somewhere?

TIA!

I would be interested in attempting to explore a tagging system that could make DC more palatable to those who might find some of the raw discussions here an unpleasant experience.  I am not attempting to censor what is said, but only to provide sign posts to any that may have a preference to not expose themselves to some questionable verbiage.

Living Room / What do you think about "What I like to do" medallions
« on: January 04, 2008, 03:23 PM »

Living Room / What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« on: January 03, 2008, 04:50 PM »
Greetings to Everyone!

After more than a year of doing all I can from my end and having some private conversations with moderators and Mouser, I now have been given leave by our overseers to take my appeal to the masses.  It is not that I needed their collective permission, but that it was my desire to exhaust every available option to compromise all the way to where I could go no further without eroding the core of my person and purpose.  I am persuaded that it was my commitment to maintaining harmony at Cody's Home and my  love for our DC community members that has provoked the leadership to encourage me to express my concerns in the open forum.  I am honored by this.  It confirms to me that my intent is devoid of selfish ambition that would manipulate others for its own narcissistic ends.  So with that disclaimer and endorsement I submit my case.

Unfortunately, my aforementioned limit has now presented itself and I am faced with a terrible dilemma.  The dilemma is...

On one hand... I have come to love this community.  I have felt at home here.  I came here because there was a special spark that made the coding alive.  In my experience, I have found no other computing forum where every bug is pursued by a relentless posse until succinctly squished by such a cerebral and compassionate community.  My coding skills and system thought processes have grown quickly and substantially greater in my participation.  I anticipate greater growth is yet to come.  I have even found a sense of my own vicarious exultation when one of our members succeeds!

On the other hand... The environment has degraded  to where I am vexed with ever increasing frequency by the profanity and graphic content that is so accepted in the threads and is so distasteful to me.

Let me share a hypothetical example...

Click
Let's say that I have found a local meeting place that is not advertised as a bar, but a common place of association.  When I first arrived, I sensed no smoke and no bottles were visible on the nicely rafted shelves and the general appointments were most pleasing to the senses.  A delicious aroma wafts up to my nose and I am anticipating sharing a sumptious dining experience with an admirable and congenial group of folks.  I am taken in ambush by my heart to gather all these people in without reserve.  I find myself a willing victim of this coronary onslaught.  After some more meals shared between us and my sense of being home is now set in,

I arrive one evening to discover a couple of whiskey bottles , their levels lowered due to being dispensed into various shots.  Beer mugs also are now present with thier white-headed yellow contents, some being illuminated from behind as the setting sun pierces through the slits in the shades.  "Hmmm... " I think to myself.  "this is a new wrinkle," but as I was so warmly allowed to enter their ranks I can not find it in myself to criticize.  I even offer my services as a dedicated driver so the integrity of thier safety will not be compromised.  In the process of learning of these new surroundings, I discover other rooms with other attributes and like the alcohol, while it is not my preference, I still can hold in higher esteem the greater character of my new friends.  Unfortunately, when I return to my accustomed theatre, I sense the smell of cigar and cigarette smoke.  Now, I have a dilemma.  If I remain, I will suffer as my respiratory health will suffer, but how can I leave such a nurturing place?  I can't, so I acquire an invisible breathing filter at significant personal cost which I can adjust to my needs.  It works successfully for the present and I can still dine on the most satisfying cuisine.  I also am made aware by the host and some of the others that I was really missed while I was gone for a time and that it was really good having me back.  Indeed the absence of my contribution had left a noticable hole.  I had never been aware that I counted that much.  It felt good!

As time progressed and with some particular instances the quantity and quality of the now smoke-filled rooms had grown to the point of overpowering my invisible filter.  My respiratory health was being adversely affected.  After discussing my plight with the storekeeper, I was advised to let them know how the environment was harming me and to have confidence that they knew me, cared for me and would do what they could to make some accomodation for my needs.  I agreed and on the next occasion I submitted that I loved them dearly and was keenly aware that there was mutual benefit to be had, but that as a non-smoker, it had become untennable for me to remain iin the present environment as it would eventually remove me anyway as my health failed even if I tried to stay.  I waited for their response.

Please note that the references to drinking and smoking are not intended to be character judgements.  They were used to offer an unreconcilable juxtaposition.  Lastly,   Thank you for taking the time to read my short story.

So, I am needful of finding out if others share my vexation or if I am a relic of a by-gone day and not compatible with the community at large.  Now that you know my thoughts, what are your thoughts?

N.A.N.Y. 2008 / Log Watch
« on: January 01, 2008, 12:19 AM »
I am considering an app that would take the stress off a trucker at the end of driving eleven hours straight at 3:17 A.M.
I am envisioning a form with large buttons with large type (perfect for those bulging blood-shot peepers).
Since everything in the logbook is based on time, I would incorporate "countdown" windows and a forecast feature.

114
I have been trying to upgrade my Toshiba laptop from Vista to XP without a lot of success, so I am needing some help.

115
I am at roughly the half-century mark and I will remember the most important things (I write a lot) for just long enough to get them down in a most spartan-like condition.  Twice I have had BSODs during some very critical apologetic writing and not even the autosave was able to rebuild Humpty-Dumpty again.  I was able to jot down the subject and where I wanted to go, but electrons are now the keeper of "how" I wanted to express and I have never been able to recall those sentences.

Enter "Evernote"

For me the most important feature (documented or not) is the ability to somehow save every keystroke.  When the keyup event is triggered, it is on my doc!  I have tested this in numerous ways and in every test Evernote still had it on the screen when Windows and came back up and I executed Evernote.

If you write and NEVER want to risk losing any pearls of wisdom, then Evernote is here to help.

FYI - The above is my own experience.  I am not spamming nor am I receiving any compensation.  I am offering a friendly tip.

Living Room / Cached pages in IE - help please!
« on: May 11, 2007, 11:14 PM »
Help!  A local newspaper has been giving quite a lot of press to antagonist's interests in regard to an organization I know.  This is the work of an angry person who was highly offended when his attempts to change community patterns to his own liking were not realized.  I can assure you the people are not "kool-aid" drinkers and many of them are my personal friends.  Good people.

The main instigator to the attacks has now publicly confessed (on the newspaper's forum) that his accusations against my friends were contrived and none of it is true.   On the same forum where all of the vehemence has been vented is now the place of significant embarrassment to the local paper and the reporter that has had major full page stories for weeks in the Sunday editions.  Not surprisingly, this forum has been deleted and no confession that it ever existed has been acknowledged when I called to question the paper.  They even denied any knowledge of the confession I read with my own eyes.

I am now trying to find that post containing the confession for some specific reasons, but the cache I have no longer can present it.

Does anyone know how I might be able to recover it?

TIA

« on: January 11, 2007, 03:18 PM »
Here's something I came across, but I can't remember where it was?    Oh well...

"Freeware" is software you do not pay for, ever, in any way.
  • It is not "Shareware," which you eventually must pay for.
  • It is not "Nagware," which tries to get you to pay for something that was originally offered as though it was free.
  • It is not "Crippleware," software that perpetually tries to annoy and tease you about features only enabled in the commercial version.
  • It is not "Adware," an increasingly popular form of software that is actually a vehicle for advertising, and that is much like the modern Internet itself.
  • It is not "Spyware," a sleazy kind of program that opens a channel of communication between your computer and someone who wants to know what you are doing.

FYI - this is something I copied somewhere, so give him/her/them the credit, not me. :)
