If it is what f0dder thinks it is (and it would make sense), I think they're playing a dangerous game with their reputation as a company. Taking money for such a tip is despicable. Not only that, if it really is what f0dder suspect they completely fail to mention the increased CPU usage you would get from compressing/decompressing the files. Also, no matter what method you use, not every filetype is compressable. I seriously doubt you would see any improved performance (and certainly not 40%+) on a HDD that stored mainly movies and music.

I've been using the old version for some time now, and I had absolutely no idea that the guy had finished up a new version. Thanks for posting this mouser!: )

Looks like they were very heavily inspired by the Tex Murphy series of games (Mean Streets, Martian Memorandum, Under a Killing Moon, Pandora Directive & Text Murphy: Overseer) :) I absolutely loved those games back in the day, so I might just check out this as well. No matter how it turns out, it's free...so why not.

Nowhere, on my system and I haven't deleted it ??

It's not here, and never have been, on my Vista Ultimate system either...

@ Dirhael - your desktop is high class!

Would tell which apps are behind the various buttons and effects, please?  :tellme:

Thanks! :)

As you requested, here's a breakdown of the components that make up my desktop:

1. The visual style is a modified version of the default Vista Aero theme. I just didn't like the start "orb" so I used Restorator 2007 to edit it. I didn't start out with a unmodified theme though, I used this editied version as a base. The reason for this is that this mod have modified the taskbar to a reasonable size, instead of the oversized fat thing Microsoft shipped. As for using custom themes, you can either patch the dll files that's responsible for the visual styles (free), or if you'd like something non-permanent you could check out TuneUp Utilities 2007 (commercial).

2. The cover art etc. in the lower left corner is the excellent freeware application CD Art Display (works with most players). As for the looks for it, I'm using the Celluloid Enthusiast skin.

3. The dock I'm using is Stardocks Objectdock (free and commercial "+" version available), along with my own dock icons (just a quick PS job using the "Trajan Pro" font) and the Konfabulator Glass background theme (don't remember where I got it from, so I've uploaded it to one of my servers).

4. The playback controls in the upper right is True Launch Bar (highly recommended!) with the Media Control Plugin and a skin called "Come Out". Once again, I don't recall where I got the skin so I've uploaded that to my server as well :)

5. The wallpaper is a beautiful vector called "Facing Life" (yes, it's Adriana Lima :-*) by someone calling himself "snir" over at deviantart.

If I've forgotten anything, let me know and I'll update my post!

Here's mine at the moment. It's still a work-in-progress, but I think I'm heading in the right direction :)

No, you don't need any other programs to install the updates. It simply downloads the hotfixes directly from Microsoft so as soon as you have it you just double-click the file(s).

As for the update lists, you can find them all on this page :)

The SC nag screen doesn't appear if you use QuickView instead of View.

No, but how does that help? Of course I wouldn't experience any problems with a feature if I don't use it, but that doesn't change the fact that they've gimped the trial badly by doing it the way they did. Quickview is by no means the same as the view you get with F3, and isn't even remotely close to being an acceptable workaround.

If my projector doesn't work, I don't see staring at the slides themselves as an acceptable workaround and this is pretty much the same thing. If this is the way they want the trial to work then fine, but seeing as their competitors are able to get it right I'd much rather give one of them my money instead. I would think that the purpose of a trial is to give a potential customer a good impression of the software and the company behind it, so while this isn't something I'd encounter in a purchased copy it doesn't exactly give me a good impression on how I can expect to be handled as a customer. A good product can only get you so far. It's how you handle public relations etc. that makes something good great.

Anyway, enough about that. It's not really worth discussing any further seeing as I don't think there is much I can do about it :)

I agree with all your points except:

fails to provide me with an alternative to the dual-pane display mode.
You can set the SC panel divider to 100% (or 0%), turn off the tree, maximize the SC window, turn on the thumbs, and have the full screen to organize your thumbs.  Save that as a named layout, put the layout dropdown on a tool bar and switch to it instantly.  Voila!

Salamander has by far the slickest/smoothest "seeming" interface behavior and appearance.  It's like silk.  I love it.  The Salamander helper dialogs for copying/moving etc, are also excellent, though they have fewer options than TC's do (the leader in copy exception dialogs, IMHO).

The nice thing about the Dopus thumbs is that you can put a slider in a tool bar and resize the thumbs on the fly without having to enter the Options dialog.  Seems de riguer, to me.

And: I have no problem with a nag screen if I haven't paid.

No I don't have a problem with a nag screen if I haven't paid either, but it's over the top to display a nag screen every single time I hit F3 to view a file considering that I've already viewed this nag screen when I opened the program itself. This excessive nagging doesn't allow me to really evaluate the product, as it means that just to view a single image with the viewer, I have to first hit F3 to open the file, then hit TAB twice to reach the "continue" button on the nag screen, then enter to close said nag screen and first then am I able to take a good look at the image I tried to open. This is insane and only serves to alienate potential customers. I'd much rather have a fully functional, usable, trial peroid lasting a week instead of 60 days of excessive nagging...all the time.

Oh and by the way, while you can set the divider to split the view 0/100%, the program still behaves like you are in dual-pane view. As an example, try hitting TAB when using that display mode and you'll soon see what I mean. It is not a good enough alternative to multiple display modes.

I do not feel that Speedcommander implements file collections any better than Dopus or Xyplorer, as in both of those it feels perfectly natural and easy to use as well. Total Commander doesn't do this as transparently as any of the 3 previously mentioned ones (neither does Xplorer^2), but it's by no means difficult as long as you already have the plugins installed.

I don't agree fully on the GUI either. I mean, it's pretty and very comfortable but if fails to provide me with an alternative to the dual-pane display mode. Thus, it gives me to little space to properly organize my images in thumbnail mode. It's essentially the same as TC in that regard. Can't comment on the folder trees, as I never use them in any file manager but I'm sure it does it well.
Another thing that bothers me in SC though is that the quick search forces me to hit enter twice to actually launch the results (you type what you want to find, need to hit enter to close the find box, then enter *again* to actually launch the file or enter the folder). I know it's not a big problem, but for a file manager that otherwise feels quite polished it seems sloppy to let that one slide release after release. They would do well to take a look at how Servant Salamander and Dopus handles it, as those are the ones that I feel get it just right. The fact that it is not fully translated into English isn't really a selling point for me either…

Ultimately though, what made me drop it despite the fact that I'm quite the file manager addict, is that it does not always create standard-compliant zip files (try to add/extract files from a Opera skin file, which is contained in zip files, and you'll see what I mean when you try to load them up in the browser), and a result of this was that I never quite felt that I could rely on it. I'm anticipating the release of v12 somewhat despite the fact that I might come off as a little negative towards the program, as it does hold great promise :)

By the way, Dopus allows you to use VBscript but only for renaming (so far at least).

EDIT: By the way, I absolutely *HATE* they way SC feels that it needs to remind you that you're using the trial version every…single…time…you…open…the…file…viewer! Damn nag screens should only appear when you first open the application (example to follow: Total Commander).

General Software Discussion / Re: browse text files

Well, you could also use Total Commander, Speedcommander or Xyplorer to do it if Dopus isn't to your liking...or even Far Manager should you prefer it. I've attached a screen of each :)

2 Dirhael

Yeh that Dopus is a monster.  I have a license, too.  It is really the most powerful straight file manager but has so many "little" quirks and lacunae that I have never been able to abandon TC for it.

By the way, Challenge 1 was to place the recursive counts of folders and files in ONE column.  You display two columns in your DOpus screen dump.  So again, Challenge 1 is still not met.

The purpose of Challenge 1 was to show how TC handles custom columns, allowing you to combine various metadata into one file panel column.  Not only that, there is a TC plugin that lets you "overload" a single column with different column values based on file masks.   This is incredibly useful:  for instance, I have a column that shows subfolders/files for folders, dimensions for images, duration for MP3s etc etc.  All in a single column!

I understood what you said in challenge 1, but as I mentioned in my post, that's just nitpicking as it has nothing to do with functionality as such. It is merely a presentational matter, as I still get the same end result as you get in TC. If we were to consider slight differences in presentation on the same level as functionality, there would be almost no file managers that could do the same thing.

313
Nice Dirhael! I love DOpus and have been using it through versions 6,8 and now 9 (over four years and counting) and it blows me away how much there is to learn about it (rephrased: how much I don't bloody well know!).

Hehe, yeah... I'm discovering new things all the time as well :) The Dopus Resource Centre and the (huge) manual just contains a wealth of information, and I love browsing through it from time to time.

NOTE: The following post is in response to the posts by JohnFredC in the Xplorer^2 thread.

Not to get in a pissing match, but since my post has been impugned, I'll respond with a couple of challenges to any other file manager (not just xplorer2).

The challenge:

Rename a set (ie. more than one) of image files  (*.jpg, for instance) to include the dimensions of the image file in the filename.

To wit:

Original filename:  MyFile.jpg
Output: MyFile.640x480.jpg

Stipulation: No spaces may be included in the resulting file name.

This is a prima facia example of the integration of metadata into TC.  The rename template for the filename portion in TC would be: [N].[=imgsize.x]x[=imgsize.y]

Where:

[N] ...denotes the original filename
[=imgsize. ...denotes a specific (free) TC content plugin implemented by a user
.x] ...denotes one of the plugins calculated metadata values (the x dimension of the image)
.y] ...denotes the other dimension.

Extra credit:

Sort the file display ascending by the Y dimension.

Ok, after reading your posts in the Xplorer^2 thread it's hard not to see it as anything but a pissing contest but ok, I'll take your challenge. After all, who am I to judge? ;) I give you the Directory Opus way:

Renaming the files to include the X & Y resolution:
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/8375/renamedirectoryopusvp4.png

(You don't need to use th regex method, but it's my prefered method so...)

Sorting ascending by Y dimension (height):
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/8991/fdownloadsbilderwallpapzb2.jpg

(I can also save this format for this folder, this and all subfolders, all folders in general and more. Notice how there is a ton+1 different fields available...and that's just in this category. Extra point to Dopus for not forcing me to install a single plugin to do this, something that TC does)

Second challenge:

For folders only (ie the column should be blank for files), show a column in the file display named "Folders/Files" that shows the number of subfolders and "subfiles" in each folder, separated by a slash.

To wit:

12/77

Extra credit:

In the file list, automatically highlight each folder that has > 300 subfiles in red.

Display subfolder and file count for folders, leaving the column empty for filenames:
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/3414/fdownloadsbilderwallpaphr2.png

No, it doesn't separate it with a slash, and doesn't colourize them but other than that I can do it. The slash thing is just nitpicking, while the colourize thing being the only thing I can see any use for. Anyway, to make a point in that I have many other options in Dopus, I added two different ways of displaying the subfolder count; one of them displays the subfolders 1 level deep, and the other displays the total number of subfolders, no matter how deep down they are.

Here's an example that matters if you work in thumbnails mode:

In xplorer2, display thumbnails.  Now sort them by date.  To do that, you must either select View>Arrange By>Date or press a 3-key short cut.  Either way, that's three clicks.  Further, there is no obvious way in xplorer2 to make a tool button to perform the sort.

In TC you click once on the column header for date.

I'm not singling xplorer2 out, here.  No other file manager I know of displays the column headers in thumbnail mode.  And this is a really big deal if you need to sort your thumbs by a custom column not accounted for by the menu.

For instance, in xplorer2, how would one sort image thumbs by image dimensions?  Or by age in days?  Or by an EXIF value?  One can do these things, of course (switch to detail mode, sort, switch back to thumbs), but extra steps are involved.

When one file manager takes three steps for another file manager's one step, and the activity represented by those steps is performed repetitively day after day, month after month, year after year, that "two step" ;) difference really begins to add up.

In Dopus you can just create a toolbar button for the sort methods you want available, no matter what display mode you're in or if it is something not displayed in the usual "sort by" menus. More importantly, with Directory Opus you can save display modes, including sort method, for individual folders and this will automatically get applied as soon as you enter said folder. This for me is a much more intuitive method. That, and the fact that I can use folder content auto detection so that I don't even have to bother clicking anything to get the display modes I want.

---

All that said, I still really like TC (and own a license for it and use it regularly) but it is not the "alpha & omega" of file management. It all depends on what you need and like.

315
JohnFredC : you seem to know TC pretty well. Can it be easily configured to replace explorer (Directory Opus can)?

No, not easily but I'm quite sure you'd be able to it the same way as with Xyplorer: More details at the Xyplorer wiki.

General Software Discussion / Re: SubmitToTab - a Firefox add-on
« on: August 28, 2007, 08:20 AM »
Don't know if you realize it, but you have always(?) been able to do this in Opera without resorting to extensions or customizing. If you simply shift-click any link or form buttons, it will open in a new tab (or window, depending on your settings). If the form button you pressed submits the form, the results will of course be submitted to the new tab or window as well. Should you, like me, prefer to stay away from the mouse when typing in a form, you can achieve the same result by hitting shift+enter to submit, instead of just enter by itself. This keyboard shortcut extends to other parts of the interface as well, and will work in elements like search boxes to.

317
absolutely incredible!

so simple and yet i didn't believe it could be done.

thanks, Dirhael.

a few credits on their way...

Dopus can really do a whole lot of things, but despite the fact that they have made a almost 300 page manual there are still lots of things let undocumented (or difficult to find in that pdf). I suppose you know this already, but I find the DOpus Resource Centre a really valuable source of information when there's something about Dopus I need to figure out. They are all a very helpful bunch over there, just like here :D

318
It's actually quite easy. You just create a new button with the following action:
Copy TO="coll://My Notes"

Works just fine :) Another button I find useful to create is one with the following action:
Copy COLLLIST
That will drop down a menu with all available collections.

Hope this helps!

Looks good, Dirhael. Thanks for the link - I'm checking it out. I'm attracted by the idea of picking and choosing the updates. I usually use the Custom option in MS Updates to achieve this, but like the availability of an option to simply download the files and research the updates without having to have MS or Windows Update scan my computer (and go through all of the WGA checking and so on).

Yeah, WGA is a pain as I hardly ever use IE so to validate I have to run their manual 1.5MB validation tool. It's not a big download or hard to use, but I don't feel like I should have to prove over and over again that I acually own my copy of Windows.

By the way, press the "Show options" if you like me like to see the publish date for the updates :)

While all those update packs are great (I've used them myself), I actually prefer a small utility called "Windows Updates Downloader". It'll download all the hotfixes directly from Microsoft (thus ensuring that they're safe and not tampered with), and it let's you pick just the ones you want. He even have update lists for Vista now :)

Thanks for posting this, I didn't know of this service until now! While I don't see myself uploading much music to such a site until I know more about the legality of it etc., I love the fact that it makes it very easy to discover new bands. Just since I started listening 5 minutes ago, I've discovered at least 1 new band that I need to find the full CD's of :)

General Software Discussion / Re: How do this in a screenshot?

Looks to me like the zooming is an in-game feature, which the user then has taken a regular screenshot of.

The functionality to zoom on on the action is most certainly a in-game feature, but that doesn't really help you take screenshots such as that. You would still have to take two snaps and edit them afterwards. In the game those screenshots are taken from, I am absolutely certain that you can't zoom in/out like that (at least not without using cheatcodes/development console or something), as I've played it...a lot :)

General Software Discussion / Re: How do this in a screenshot?
« on: August 20, 2007, 08:17 AM »
You would have to take two screenshots to do what those pictures are showing, then edit them manually. So to answer your question, no it would not be possible mainly due to the fact that no screen capture program could take a snapshot of something that isn't being displayed on the screen. The only exception would be if the game natively had the functionality to take such screenshots, but I've never seen it.

Tried running it with administrative privileges (right-click, run as admin)? Don't know if it'll help, but it has solved many problems with certain programs for me. That said, I actually went back to XP for the time being after running Vista since around the commercial release. Just got sick of all the problems with it, application compatibility being one of the major factors.
