DC Website Help and Extras / Quick Reply >> Tab != Post?
« on: November 09, 2006, 10:33 PM »
Hiya Mouser.

I'm guessing most every poweruser here uses the Quick Reply textarea at the bottom of all threads.
I'm also quessing that a common habit of everyone that enters a reply is used to hitting Tab then Enter (on Windows) to post their reply.

But on the forum, pressing Tab scrolls the page to the top.
Can that be fixed?

177
How's that to-do list coming along Mouser?

... bookmarking is slowed down by the fact that the page title for forum threads does not include the string "DonationCoder.com" like all non-forum page titles does. Manually adding such a string to the title of each bookmark is time-consuming (in the long run at least).

very good ideas indeed. adding it to my todo list.

that's a pretty cool tattoo; great job of making her name into art.
:P thanks.

I used to draw LOTS when I was younger. I loved doing portraits. I had done everyone in my 7th grade class once.
but my need for perfection quickly overcame and then I came across Macromedia Fireworks and Notepad ... haven't looked back since. lol.

What do you mean by webdevelopment? How'd you like to use it?
I do lots of graphic file editing with Fireworks. mostly site background gradients, icons, css background images, etc.

rather than always have FileZilla open, I'd like an alternative (your app) to facilitate things.
I too used rcftp. It worked well for me, but offered no configuration.
I'd rather use a AHK script, learn to use it, and as i get better with scripting with auto hot key, edit the source to do more precisely what i need.
:D

You can get the compiled version here.
Or the .ahk file here.
Any new developments jgpaiva?

I am very interested in using this for webdevelopment.

Tried and tested:

AHK BBCodeWriter v.6.6
http://www.autohotke.../homepage/index.html
verdict: needs more configuration options to allow [ table ][ tr ][ td ]

[ B ][ /B ]ed Offline BBcode Editor
http://www.kyrsoft.c.../opentools/bbed.html
verdict: NOT configurable

Fass 0.8
http://www.pawsoft.com/?p=fass/home
verdict: NOT configurable

182
I really dig all the effort into making this happen.
I would definitely use this, but I am looking for a way to do this OFFLINE.

A quick Googling and I came across a thread at the AHK forum. AHK BBCodeWriter v6.6 - An offline BBCode Editor.

When I get around to writing an indepth review of an application of my choice, I'd prefer to do it offline.
But the template code (actually the tables) doesnt get parsed properly by the engine. I am looking for one with greater customization.

Any alternatives?

I know this thread is almost a year old, and I don't know where you (Mouser) stand with the decision.

was one made?
are you using a home-made CMS?
i dunno!
:)
Just offering my own opinion: ExpressionEngine by http://www.pmachine.com/ is highly robust, extremely customizable and it offers EVERYTHING you are seeking.

I've been toying with the free Core version for over 5 months now. Highly recommended.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« on: November 07, 2006, 05:26 PM »
I was fortunate enough to locate the free version of Sygate Personal Firewall long ago when it was around.
Saved it to disk, just as I do all my software goodies.

<<quick Googling>>

<<check my application installations>>
The version I have is v.5.6 build 2808

That is the one available for download at FileHippo

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 2 hints and tips
« on: November 05, 2006, 11:43 AM »
Just one tip that interested me. Firefox 2.0 default putting the close icons on every tab. I prefer instead just one single red X icon, on the right.
Just set browser.tabs.closeButtons = 3 to have it this way.

Bye!
to get it on just the tab being viewed (my preference) do this:
browser.tabs.closeButtons = 0

I also vaguely remember a similar thread, like "what are the best programs you use?" - I can't find it, maybe someone could post the URL to it here?

My favorite software! What's yours?

<<EEK shoots self in foot>>
sorry for starting an already live topic.

Edit by brotherS: Topic locked now - please post in that other thread, thanks!

yeah we really need to consolidate these threads since we have a few of them now :)

jammo - you've got some nice things on your list
i think so too.

after having used Treeliner to make my original list, i grabbed TiddlyWiki.
and I put them all on there.

now it will be easier than everrr to keep track of WHAT i install. when I install it, and then UNinstall it. LOL.

for my file versioning (i do a little hobby webdev), so I need to keep track of file versions. but have not looked at Subversion, although it looks promising!

i use TClockEx (http://www.rcis.co.z...e/tclockex/index.htm) for my taskbar clock.
it has this neat feature: (my own configuration) i clock on it, and it copies the following to my clipboard:
061104-011122
Year. Month. Day. - Hour.Minute.Second.
makes it so much easier when manually searching my file directory for a previous version.

i do that file method only when saving a big change. not all file saves.

i am indeed proud to state that i am weening myself off of Macromedia, Adobe, and other expensive software, and switching over to OpenSource and Freeware.
I can't forget DonationWare.
In fact, most of the applications written by Mouser are located in a zip file that's close to 34.5MB.
Plus I'm tinkering more and more with autohotkey.
Never was a programmer, but it's satisfaction rate, positive results and community of users makes me want to really get into it. :)

Living Room / what do YOU install on a fresh Windows PC?
« on: November 04, 2006, 12:39 AM »
My old PC was my hot testing ground. I installed all KINDA of crap on that poor Compaq machine.
back in those days, i didn't defrag, i had poor PC maintenance habits, i'd had partitions from old installations and tests i did over the years. yadda yadda yadda ... ya know?!

When I bought my wife a new PC for Christmas a few years ago for college (she was then just my girlfriend), I now have her computer (whats hers is mine, right?) cause mine finally died on me.
I use it more than she does.
The shop where I got it built also included Windows XP Pro. I've since then messed around with hers MORE than I ever did with mine, cause, HEY! I got a new XP install disk, right?
Mess up bad enough, i can just reinstall. ;)

So I got a buddy of mine to show me how to make my installation smaller, using nLite.
i still don't get how to do it, but last week, he was able to cut down my windows installation to about 300KB.

ssoo ... my question for YOU DonationCoders, what is your amazing list of software that you install on a new XP machine?

<<BTW:I've made a list of what i wish to install on my next XP installation with my newly composed (is that the right word?) ... my newly composed XP disk. http://jammo.net/myEssentialsCD3.txt
i used this opensource app called TreeLine? it's on that list.>>

virtual machines like vmware are ideal for testing stuff, but i wouldn't want to have a live website running on one on a personal pc, for performance reasons.
nor would xampp be ideal for running a production site.
as i mentioned, i use it for testing offline, then i move everything over.
files and databases.
thats how i learned the expression engine tags.

UPDATE:
running Damn Small Linux 3.0.1
screen shot = 1280x1024

http://jammo.net/uploads/screens/2006-10-28_07-48-25.png

Kinda neat.
Just messing around right now. Enjoying the possibilities :)

Which would be the better (faster, efficient, least resources) choice?!

I am a budding web developer.
Mostly xhtml + css, with little php.
For over a year now, I have been using XAMPP (http://www.apachefri...ds.org/en/xampp.html)
I've tested and launched my own site blog many times over. Tested WordPress, Text Pattern, NucleusCMS, sBlog, and just a few months ago, started using ExpressionEngine (which is what I use now for my domain).
Testing off line makes things so much easier!

Just the other day, I came across EasyVMX(http://www.easyvmx.com/index.shtml) and I used that to re-install my Windows XP Pro. I was just amazed!
I've only ever read about virtual machines, and using them to test software and OS installations, but I never though it would be so easy!

So now, I'd like some advise from some serious software freaks.
Which would be the better alternative (fun) coding environment: xampp or vm?

I've had Ubuntu installed before, I loved it. But I had to migrate back to Windows as all my software collection is ... well, windows based. I'd like to tinker with Damn Small Linux, or go back to Ubuntu.
I won't be able to share a windows directory, but figured that whatever files I create in Windows that I need to share with my linux, I can just FTP to my server via Filezilla and download with Linux (right?).

hhmm ... oh what a pickle coders.

Override version checking and you can reenable them - I didn't find any that wouldn't work (except for RoboForm and they have now released a version 2 extension).
where is the option to disable version checking?

i went to: Tools > Options > Advanced ???

i can find nothing on Version Checking.
:(

Hint for those who are in England or Canada or anyone who spells "colour" with a U: to download another dictionary go to https://addons.mozil...ionaries/?lang=en-US

It took me a long time to figure this out.

Ever closed a TAB only to realise you wish you hadn't? Try Ctrl + Shift + T and you can step back through closed tabs and they will be reopened in new tabs. Really useful.
realise = real eyes realize real lies.

WOW!
i heard all about the spell-checker that's built in, and when i quoted you, it did that little underline thing to show it's misspelled. thats awesome!

and thanks for the Ctrl + shift + T tip, i found that by pressing that combo several times, it opens ALL OTHER previously closed tabs as well, not just the past last one.
it even does it in the original tab location!

sweeeeeeet.

... I love the enthusiasm you have for the project and for learning and doing things. I just think this is not a very productive use of time ...
... The other issue to consider with all of this is the legality of redistributing these apps. Check the EULA's of all apps to be sure.

- Oshyan
yes, same here amigo.
best of luck with this great project.
you've made a great choice to join these forums. many great coders here.

EULAs are my concern for you too. most would NOT want you to distribute their software. mostly due to customers/clients getting updates
