I have a couple keys to give away for some games:

  - Insurgency (Steam): I don't know much about this game - got some keys in a Humble Bundle that I'm supposed to give away

  - Witcher 2 (gog): I got a free key in their recent sale's giveaway, and I already have the game in my library. I imagine that almost anyone who might be interested in the game has one already (since they were being given away quite recently), but I figure there might be someone who missed out for whatever reason.

PM me if you're interested in either or both.

XYplorer 2014 Cyber Monday sale: Lifetime Pro licenses %50 off through Cyber Monday: December 1st, 2014, 23:59 GMT

US$ 79.95 39.95        EUR 59.95 29.95

I purchased my first XY license many years ago, and it has been one of the best values of my software purchases.  DonL is a machine that keeps making it better.

User-based licensing and a lifetime license on quality software that is continually improved and shows no signs of slowing down - good stuff.

How One Woman Hid Her Pregnancy From Big Data

For the past nine months, Janet Vertesi, assistant professor of sociology at Princeton University, tried to hide from the Internet the fact that she's pregnant — and it wasn't easy.

...
According to Vertesi, the average person's marketing data is worth 10 cents; a pregnant woman's data skyrockets to $1.50. And once targeted advertising finds a pregnant woman, it won't let up.

General Software Discussion / OneNote is now free
« on: March 17, 2014, 04:41 PM »
Today we’re excited to complete that story with three major developments:

OneNote for Mac is available for the first time and for free. With this, OneNote is now available on all the platforms you care about: PC, Mac, Windows tablets, Windows Phone, iPad, iPhone, Android and the Web. And they’re always in sync.

OneNote is now free everywhere including the Windows PC desktop and Mac version because we want everyone to be able to use it. Premium features are available to paid customers.

The OneNote service now provides a cloud API enabling any application to connect to it. This makes it easier than ever to capture ideas, information and inspirations from more applications and more places straight into OneNote, including:

  •    OneNote Clipper for saving web pages to OneNote
  •    [email protected] for emailing notes to OneNote
  •    Office Lens for capturing documents and whiteboards with your Windows Phone
  •    Sending blog and news articles to OneNote from Feedly, News360 and Weave
  •    Easy document scanning to OneNote with Brother, Doxie Go, Epson, and Neat
  •    Writing notes with pen and paper and sending them to OneNote with Livescribe
  •    Mobile document scanning to OneNote with Genius Scan and JotNot
  •    Having your physical notebooks scanned into OneNote with Mod Notebooks
  •    Connecting your world to OneNote with IFTTT

Go to www.onenote.com to get OneNote for free for your Mac, PC or other devices, and try out the new OneNote service connected experiences.

There is still a paid version of OneNote if you need such "premium features like SharePoint support, version history, Outlook integration and so on".

So, is this an Evernote-killer or is it too late or not enough for that?

Macecraft has an Indiegogo fundraiser that has a target of $100K - if they meet the target, they have committed to releasing the source to jv16 Powertools under the GPL.  If the fundraiser meets some higher targets, they'll release under a more liberal open source license.

I'm not sure what to think about this exactly.  Interesting, if nothing else.

I haven't been a fan of registry cleaners for a long while now (and I *think* that's what jv16 Powertools' main function is), but I guess a quality open source package would be a good thing.

If I correctly understand all the updates they've posted, a $10 pledge will get you a jv16 license immediately, so you can consider it a sale of sorts.

But be aware!  This crowdsource fundraiser will immediately charge you for a pledge, even if the goal is never met.  I'm not very experienced with these things, but it was my understanding that the usual rule was that pledges didn't get charged unless the goal was met.

At the moment, they stand at $37K of the $100K goal, with 11 days remaining.

About once a year I have a special sale that most people think is crazy and I swear I’ll never do it again. This month I have a good reason to try to have more people protected by WinPatrol.

For long weekend I’m making a one system lifetime upgrade license to WinPatrol PLUS available for $2.00. Our full family pack lifetime license normally $49.95 can also be purchased for $10.00.  Sale ends Monday night at midnight EST.

It's nice to hear a story of someone successfully standing up against one of these extortion attempts:

In an unusual turn of events, after more than a year of litigation Uniloc USA, Inc. asked the Court to dismiss its own lawsuit against SlickEdit, Inc.  This came a week after the court held a three-hour Markman hearing on February 13, 2014 in which SlickEdit argued that Uniloc’s patent covered far less than what Uniloc was claiming.

At some point (soon?) after Malwarebytes v2.0  is launched, they will stop offering lifetime licenses.  The new license model will be a yearly subscription, with each subscription valid for 3 PCs.

Current lifetime licenses are grandfathered, of course.

With the launch of 2.0, we'll also be moving to a subscription licensing model, $24.95 per year. As more and more people have come to rely on us for malware protection and cleanup, our costs in bandwidth, hosting fees, infrastructure, salaries of our researchers, QA department, and more have grown immensely. Though our company is about more than just making money, we are a company and we do have to make money to pay our staff to continue doing what they love, which is fighting malware. The subscription model will help us to be sustainable for the future while staying true to our roots that we will always make malware cleanup free for everyone.

We will continue to honor existing lifetime licenses, meaning any users that already have a lifetime license for 1.x will continue to have a lifetime license for 2.x. We'll be offering a few thousand more lifetime licenses during launch as well. On top of all of that, new subscription licenses will be valid for 3 PCs, not just 1.

If you're considering pulling the trigger on Malwarebytes Pro and would like a lifetime license, don't wait too long.

$10 off by ordering through this link: https://store.malwar....org/342/purl-arrrlp

http://www.gog.com/

Lots of stuff on sale, and it looks like each day will have some 24-hour BIG deals.

One of today's big deals is: Fallout, Fallout 2 , and Fallout Tactics are all FREE!  - https://secure.gog.c...ay_winter_promo_2013

Note that there's a strong rumor that these titles will no longer be on sale on GOG after the new year due to changes in ownership of rights to the games. So get 'em while you can, and get 'em while they're free. (If you've purchased a title, the download remains in your account even after GOG no longer sells it - at least that's been true so far)

Understandably, the site is getting hammered.

Update:

It looks like the link to the free Fallout offers has been taken off of the GOG home page.  It also looks like the direct link above still works.  The site seems to be a bit better but is still pretty flaky, so I'm not sure how easy it'll be to get through the checkout process - or even if the offer might be cancelled (it looks like it was planned to be for today and tomorrow).

Until Friday, Nov. 1 at 11:59pm Eastern

Happy Halloween from Wadjet Eye Games! The indie developer has just updated their retro-style, point & click PC adventure The Blackwell Deception with higher quality character portraits. And how better to celebrate Rosa Blackwell's favorite holiday than by giving away the full, updated game?

Of course, anyone who already bought Blackwell Deception from Steam, GOG, Desura, or directly from Wadjet Eye will get free access to the updated version. Here's the "trick or treat!" part -- for everyone else, Wadjet Eye is offering Blackwell Deception totally free through Friday, Nov. 1 at 11:59pm Eastern.

To pocket this Halloween goodie:

1) Visit http://www.rosablackwell.com

2) Click Buy Now to add Blackwell Deception to the cart

3) [edited: the buy button takes you directly to download links now - there's no longer any need to enter a code in a checkout page]

Just like that one house on the block that hands out full-sized candy bars, this is news worth spreading! Tell your readers, tell your friends. (Or else Rosa and Joey might have to come over and toilet paper your house. Just saying...)

The game is a DRM-free download (they are no longer distributing Steam keys)

[Edit: removed inactive download links]

http://www.reddit.co...geddon_franchise_ama

All you have to do is send a PM to the "GOGaway" reddit account, and a bot will PM back a GOG key for the game.

Details on the game in case free isn't a good enough detail: http://www.gog.com/g...carmageddon_max_pack

And don't forget - all GOG games are DRM-free.

Microsoft is stopping development of some of their web development tools sets (Expression Studio, Expression Design, and Expression Web):

They are making Expression Design 4 and Expression Web 4 available for free now:

  - http://www.microsoft...etails.aspx?id=36180

Keep in mind these are end of life products; they will net be enhanced or officially supported.

I've never used them, so I have no opinion on whether or not they're worthwhile downloads.

GOG is redoing the "End of the World" sale that they had on Dec 21 - there are a bunch of bundles at 75% off and nearly all of their games are 50% off if you decide not to go with a bundle.

If you like old, nostalgic games, it's a good time to buy.  I've been replaying Ultima Underworld the past few days, and I'm loving it (but my sleep cycle isn't).

All games on GOG are DRM free.
