Really good to see you posting here again, Ken! I'm having a hard time really adjusting to eXtreme Movie Manager TBH, Collectorz really made a good app. But I'd love to move away from this company, which seems more intent on collecting money than anything else, really. A shame, since they make great software.

Thanks Tuck!!! It's very good indeed to 'see' you here, as well as the other users. I have not been following the forum for a while, perhaps at all since I moved to Austin. I have been busy trying to adapt to my new life in Texas and my participation in the forum and chat room have been on pause. I am starting to catch up with things a bit though and hopefully, I will be able to drop in more and more though.

Some more threads have mysteriously vanished from the Collectorz board

I'm starting the conversion to eXtreme Movie Manager. While not the most beautiful app out there, it's got tons of features, uses a number of scripts (more can be added by users) to import data, is actively developed by an author who seems genuinely interested in his customers. The program only costs $10 btw! Data exported from Movie Collector to XML can be imported (images as well!) so the change didn't take long, but there's a fair bit of updating needed. Best alternative I've found!

Only 10$ , unlimited updats included!

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but I also think that formatting adds a lot. You can tell a lot about where you are in a program from indentation and other stylistic matters that the compiler doesn't care about, but makes the programmers life a bit simpler. Simple-minded I know, but so am I.

I bought version 9 at the end of June last year. What happened with v.10 was that when I checked the upgrade price I missed the "fine print" on their front page indicating free upgrades for a year. That was only valid with the maintenance upgrade but I only caught the "free upgrade" part.

They corrected me when I inquired about it but they were nice enough to offer an additional discount anyway. I would almost certainly not have upgraded without that discount.

I've not Darwin. I looked it over and didn't see that the upgrade would make a lot of difference for me. So, although I respect JPSoft and like to support shareware development, I don't think I'm going to given the price and perceived cost/benefit ratio.

What are your thoughts on the upgrade?

As an example, if you want to rip a music video to mp3, the settings don't go any higher than 160 kbps! If on the other hand you would like to rip to iPod, iTunes, PSP, etcetera, (of which I have none), this program just might be perfect for you.

I use PerfectDisk and got a free upgrade to version 10.

As usual it seems good and solid but it really is the same package as they always sell and I can't see any noticeable difference from version 9 (2008).

They say:

• version 10 is faster - well it doesn't seem to be on my system
• new AutoPilot - which looks pretty much the same as in the previous version as far as I can tell
• enhanced user interface - the only difference I can see is that they changed th colours in the drive map (which is just plain confusing when you are used to their colour scheme in previous versions)
• Free Space Management - looks exactly what they had in the previous version and all it does is list duplicate files and lets you choose which one (if any) to delete. They also have a warning that deleting duplicates is not a good idea in many cases - so why not avoid flagging duplicates that are potentially dangerous to delete?

They are MS certified - well whoopty-do .... they actually pay MS for a certificate - bully for them. Doesn't actually mean much!

The only genuinely new things seems to be:

• you can pause indefinitely - why would you want to do that? If you are doing something disk intensive then you would want to reanalyse the disk before continuing with a defrag wouldn't you?
• Win7 support - but given that Win7 still uses NTFS as its base filing system it isn't exactly a great leap (plus Win7 isn't finalised yet so they really shouldn't claim compatibility until they can actually test the product on the final version!)

All in all it is a solid app and if you are buying with 20% discount then it is worth having but as an upgrade I am not convinced unless you want Win7 support at this point? Certainly if you are tempted by the upgrade give the trial a run and be prepared to reinstall the old version.

Ok, so let's say I was copying from my laptop's internal drive from one partition to another or from a drive to an external drive connected via USB. At last virus scan, the file count was close to 2M. Most of these are very small files. Would either terracopy or McTool copy them faster than Windows Vista 64, directory opus, or xyplorer?

Hi Andrea and all,

I would like to put in a plug here for Direct Access and its creator, Andrea. She has gotten a blizzard of messages from me. She has been prompt and her responses have been very helpful. Each one was hand written and pertained directly to my question rather than canned text that was tangentially relevant if at all.

I resisted trying Direct Access for a long time because I was using AutoHotkey and saw no real use for it. Having tried it, however, I must say I am a convert. Also, I have looked at a number of similar apps and have found Direct Access to have the best interface of the bunch.

If you've not tried it, take a look at it. You couldn't want a more helpful app or better support.


Oh yes, and while I am at it, I would like to thank Darwin (Thanks Mike!) for all his help and input regarding these programs as well. I can tell you that thanks to me, he has gotten little, if at all, work done on his Ph.D. lately.

Some time ago I was talking with some other dudes and the result of the discussion was that speed isn´t important. Now in this thread it seems that the speed is the main thing you´re looking at. What´s up now, do you prefer a big software packet with many great search features or speed?

I use both Crush. I think of them as different. One just finds files by name, the other for more/different information. For a name find though, you don't need all those features. So, I currently use Everything and Where Is It?

I've only used Check&Get, so can only note that it also allows you to mark a link as "hot". Not sure if that's what you were referring to, actually. Have you looked at mouser's Best Website Monitoring Tool Review? The winner, Website Watcher, might be worth a look as well. It's a perennial favourite among DC regulars. Don't know about its bookmark management capabilities though.

FWIW, I am very happy with Check&Get, but I don't use it for bookmark management (I don't use anything). I know at least one Check&Get user is now very happy using Linkman for management purposes. He (KenR) wrote a mini-review of it here. You've probably already seen it, though...

Far be it from me to disagree with ANYTHING Darwin says! So, consistent with his post, while Check&Get can be used to keep track of bookmarks, it is really for monitoring changes on websites and would therefore be overkill for this purpose.

I have looked at multiple programs and have not found anything better than Linkman. There is also a free version of it now. For straightforward organization of links, you might also take a look at Link Commander.

Vista-SP1 is actually quite fine, if you have the hardware to make it sing. After Win 7 comes out, just once I want John Hodgman to kick the Apple schmuck in the onions; commercial ends with him writhing and crying on the ground!

My God Zaine, I can't believe you said that. Maybe you are talking about Vista 32, rather than x64, which I have. I can't print to any driver in Quicken. Many programs won't install at all and I have some kind of problem with about 10% or so of those that do.

Yeah, installing XP is an option - IF - you have XP drivers for your computer hardware, which I don't.

Anyone beginning to sense that I despise the refuse that is Vista?

Hey Jesse,
I think it's a great program and that toolbars are the fastest way to start commonly used programs. The ONLY reason I don't use it is because I build toolbars with Directory Opus, which I am using anyway. So, even adding a nicer toolbar program would be largely redundant.

Hi all.

Six months or so ago, I bought a computer that had Vista x64 installed. Though I like the computer, I am rapidly approaching my limit with software having problems or not running at all. I have an unused copy of XP from a computer I have discarded. What would be the easiest way of installing XP with all the patches and updates?
