Living Room / Retro Remakes 2006 Competition: Game Overload of the Day
« on: February 15, 2007, 09:10 AM »
This competition to recreate games will let people play their favorites again or try popular old games for the first time.

Green Beret, Wings of Fury and Ghouls and Ghosts - if those names ring a bell you have come to the right place. Everyone else join us as we delve into a time where some of the greatest games of all time were produced. The motto of the 2006 Retro Remakes competition is “Good remakes of good games that anyone can play, regardless of their ability”. I think this is indeed a great opportunity for old folks like us to enjoy those games we played when we were young once again and for  young folks to play games that we probably never heard about before...

Ok, now see if you can say that 3 times as fast as you can.

Yesterday Microsoft released the pre-release of DreamScene as part of the Ultimate Extras that Vista Ultimate users have the capability to use. It’s one of those “wow” factors that a lot of people will probably be impressed with. You could take it and use it for it’s face value, or you could dive in and try out DeskScapes which extends the Windows DreamScene and adds more capability.
DeskScapes was created by Stardock who was contracted by Microsoft to work with them on the animated wallpaper feature. Stardock were actually the ones that created the default wallpapers that you’ll find with the DreamScene. While they were at it, they created the program DreamScapes which is free, and supports the new .DREAM format (which supports dynamic content instead of video, generated dynamically). According to the official news release, the program extends the DreamScene to include dynamic/live content, and triggers...

General Software Discussion / DeskSave: Icon Layout Restore Tool
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:53 PM »
Here is a free tool to save and restore icon positions on the desktop

In Windows, when screen resolution changes, the order of the desktop icons very often gets mixed up. With DeskSave it is quite easy to recover a previously saved icon layout either manually or automatically. Software developers are given the opportunity to test their applications in different screen resolutions without disarranging the desktop icons...

General Software Discussion / Note taking software and Web Services
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:44 PM »
Fantastic listing of text editing for multiple topics such as basic note taking and programming.

...I started thinking about all the services I’ve used for taking notes and thought it would be a good idea to share them with you and while I’m at it, to make a list of any others that I find. Now, when it comes to note taking, I personally look for quick and simple. If I have something on my mind, I don’t want to go through some advanced system and climb a mountain just to save a note for myself. There won’t be all the note taking tools out there on my list, but ones that I feel get the job done well...

Here is an article from an online, peer-reviewed journal that discusses motivating factors in open-source software.

The goal of the study on Fun and Software Development (FASD) is to precisely assess the importance that fun has as motivation for software developers to engage in open source projects. A survey carried out both under open source developers and programmers working in Swiss software companies yielded that the fun motive accounts for about 27 percent to 33 percent of open source developers’ motivation.
Fun is a pervasive feature of software development, not only for open source programmers but in the area of commercial software development too: Open source developers that are paid for their work are observed to be very motivated and prepared for future effort, especially if they enjoy their development time. Furthermore, the fun that programmers experience functions as a good proxy for their productivity. Therefore, employers that want to enhance the programmers’ productivity can safely invest in an environment of fun for developers in their company.

General Software Discussion / Wavosaur free audio clip editor
« on: February 12, 2007, 07:28 PM »
Here's a free, cool program for working with audio clips, particularly if you want to "mangle" them.

Wavosaur is a powerful free audio editor for Windows XP, ideal for editing audio clips, sound designing, mastering, audio mangling and recording of your digital audio sounds.
Wavosaur lets you edit all your samples and audio recording. You can cut, copy, paste parts of your digital recording. Wavosaur provides many tools and shortcuts to make the editing very fast and efficient. The program was designed to give a powerful audio editor but very easy and fast to use.
Wavosaur is also a VST host, it means you can use VST effects on your audio recording, listen in real time to the audio processed by effects, and apply the effects of course.

Living Room / Flea Circus: Flah Game of the Day
« on: February 12, 2007, 06:19 AM »
For those of you who have wanted fleas, this is your big chance.

How to Play Flea Circus
Click on the Start New Game button to begin playing
Once you have started the game you will be confronted with a screen split into 2 sections. The top section is the main playing area. After a short delay you will see the fleas fall out the block marked with an arrow and begin running backwards and forwards. You must guide them to the exit which looks like a doorway - to do this you must place blocks and ramps correctly on the screen. Do this by clicking on which of the 3 shapes at the bottom of the screen you want to place, then click on the screen where you want to put it. You can use as many of each block as you want, but there are a few limitations:
    * Blocks can only be placed on empty squares
    * Blocks cannot be placed where a flea is standing - Wait for it to move away.
    * A block cannot be removed again except when destroyed by bomb blocks
Blocks can be used to bridge gaps, or block ways you don't want the fleas to go...

Living Room / Will Wikipedia Run Out of Money and Disappear
« on: February 10, 2007, 04:18 PM »
They need Mouser take over and show em how to do things!  ;)

Florence Devouard, chairwoman of the Wikimedia Foundation, has touched off a tempest with her suggestion in a talk at the Lift07 conference that Wikipedia has funding for only another quarter and "might disappear" if donations don't pick up.
Dire stuff ... if true.
According to this post by media producer Philippe Mottaz, Devouard told the audience: "At this point, Wikipedia has the financial resources to run its servers for about 3 to 4 months...

Developer's Corner / Why AJAX is Preferred for RIAs over Java
« on: February 09, 2007, 09:23 PM »
Here's an informative discussion of why AJAX is preferred for this issue.

Several of Bruce Tate’s books focused on the flaws in Java and the need to let go of some of the ideas that haven’t worked out. And blogs like this and this have been appearing more frequently. And of course there’s Steve Jobs now-famous quote (referring to the iPhone): “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
This backlash has only been necessary because of Sun’s death grip on the idea of ubiquitous, omniscient Java. It was admirable once, but a language only evolves if its designers and advocates can acknowledge problems. Pretending that a language is successful in places where it’s not is just denial.
Some adaptations have occurred. Finally admitting that EJBs have cost the world enormously, the EJB3 team...

Developer's Corner / Iconize Textlinks with CSS
« on: February 05, 2007, 04:06 PM »
Here's a cool CSS trick to show icons next to each download link.

Iconize Textlinks with CSS
Where will this link take me?

Links are fun, but sometimes we don't know where they take us. With this little CSS technique a user can identify a link by it's icon. This whole thing was inspired by the "Showing Hyperlink Cues with CSS" article of Ask the CSS Guy.

The idea is pretty simple, if a link points to a .pdf file, we show the .pdf icon after the link.
Here are some more examples which i already implemented:

Living Room / Saving Electricity and Power Consumption
« on: February 05, 2007, 02:37 PM »
Here is everything you've always wanted to know, but were afraid to ask about power use.

Later on we'll cover how to measure the exact amount of electricity something uses. But the shortcut is to just look at the label! Nearly everything you can plug into the wall has a label that says how much electricity it uses. (It may be printed directly into the plastic or metal.) You may have to hunt for the label. It's often located on the bottom or side of the device, or possibly where the power cord enters the unit. If the device is powered with an AC/DC adapter, the electrical rating is usually listed on the adapter itself.

If the label only gives the number of amps and not the number of watts, then just multiply the amps by 120 to get the number of watts. (Amps x Volts = Watts, and most U.S. electricity is 120 volts. So a hot plate that uses 6 amps uses 6 x 120 = 720 watts...

Here is an interesting site of flash-based widgets for your own sites.

There is a reason why we call them YOUR minis...

...because you personalize them, silly!

Use the awesome power and flexibility of Flash to display content you gather from all over the web in tabs, then share those tabs with the world by publishing them to the yourminis.com community.

The tabs can represent your favorite sports team or be a way to keep track of the activity on your various social network accounts. You can create fan pages, promotional pages, art pieces, school projects, design mockups, or anything else you can dream up.

Give yourminis a whirl without signing up by adding a tab and dragging content from the left add content bar onto your page.  If you want to publish your tabs and view yourminis on multiple computers, create an account.

Enjoy!

« on: February 05, 2007, 12:10 PM »
For those not having enough to do, here are some mental challenges for you to work at.

Project Euler is a series of challenging mathematical/computer programming problems that will require more than just mathematical insights to solve. Although mathematics will help you arrive at elegant and efficient methods, the use of a computer and programming skills will be required to solve most problems.

The motivation for starting Project Euler, and its continuation, is to provide a platform for the inquiring mind to delve into unfamiliar areas and learn new concepts in a fun and recreational context.

Even if quite important, the data provided in the test reports on this site are just some aspects that you should consider when buying Anti-Virus software.
