Find And Run Robot / Re: Wow.
« on: March 17, 2005, 02:18 PM »
great to hear that - i've been discussing some possible new features with other new members..
if anyone has some feature requests please post!
i may be able to do an update next week.

two features in consideration for adding are optional reading of windows' internal list of programs run and adding them to history for faster search and easier location of recently run programs outside of f&r, and the ability to search for folders.

i'm open to any other feature requests!

Just a link to the old mircryption forum on sourceforge:

http://sourceforge.n....php?forum_id=202523

further discussions about mircryption should take place here.

of course mircryption is still open source and always will be - it's just that as wonderful as sourceforge is, the forums their are truely the worlds worst  ;)

Living Room / Re: BIO
« on: March 17, 2005, 01:00 AM »
i was thinking about putting up a little bio.
i'm one of those people who are kind of private but i realize people like to know who they are dealing with; we put a real snail mail address up on the contact page for people who want a real person to contact about registering, but it might be helpful if i put up some info about myself so people can feel like they are interacting with a real human being :)

i was actually thinking about making a blog for developer's with their software here (so far i'm the only author here but i think we will have more once i figure out the best way to do it).  might be interesting for people to hear about whether this approach is going to work or not..

i tried in the past offering my software and just making a passing reference to donations and no one ever donates, so i'm trying to do a more pro-active approach this time, while still keeping with the core idea that the software remain free for all, but just trying to offer some incentives for donating, and making it more of a community thing.

Mouser's Zone / Re: Any new ideas for small utilities?
« on: March 16, 2005, 05:19 AM »
i have to admit i've not explored the icon extractors - i've been meaning too but havent yet;
maybe something to investigate and then review..

i just found some random ones:
Icon Scanner - http://www.softspice.com/
Icon Catcher - http://www.helexis.c...products/find_icons/

i'm sure there must be some good free ones too..
seems to me one feature that would be nice would be dupe checking.

I'm wondering how valuable people think it would be to make the help files for my programs browsable online?

ProcessTamer / Re: ideas for process tamer
« on: March 15, 2005, 11:26 AM »
im definitely going to move to a more full config file instead of the applicationovverides file;
the config file will allow settings parameters like high and low thresholds cpu usage triggering.

and i will add gui config file.

would a gui config file do away with the need to use wildcards?
though you do have that nice wildcard library you wrote i could use for that :)
i should also probably make the filename matching case insensitive.

switching rulesets is def. something im considering;
it would involve some extra work, but it would allow some extra functionality that i used to have in another program i made,
such that if i added ability to specify processes to start and stop with a rule set,
then you could use a rule set to start up or shut down a whole set of processes.

ie you could select from tray to start your web server config, and it would launch (if not already running) your web server and helper tools, and set up your cpu thresholds, etc.  then you could switch "off" that ruleset and it would shut down those programs.

almost sounds like a different program though..

Mouser's Zone / Any new ideas for small utilities?
« on: March 14, 2005, 10:35 PM »

ProcessTamer / ideas for process tamer
« on: March 14, 2005, 08:06 PM »
ProcessTamer is the latest little utility i've been working on.
there are several things i could add to it - if anyone has desired functions please let me know.

things that could be added:
  • a nice gui for configuring new rules/exclusions
  • more kinds of rules, for example to restart an app if it is found not running; to set time periods for running apps at certain priorities, etc.
  • ability to display current processes and priorities from tray click
  • ability to configure and switch between rule sets from the tray icon
  • customizable icons for tray
  • ability to add custom menus to tray icon for launching or stopping certain processes
  • features to let you use process tamer to collect a log of what programs were run and when (ie statistics on time spent)
  • better simple logging info
  • more options about configuring program, like turning off baloon hints, etc.
  • win9x suppper

ps. if you are a member of donationcoder.com make sure you grab the latest release which is available for members only (see members only section).

very good suggestions.

we should have an award for tools that people didn't even know they needed.

speaking of best editor, i made another macro for ultraedit, im thinking of making a place for them;  the more i make ultra edit macros though, the more i see that this is the achilles heel of ultraedit..  it's macro support is HORRIBLE.

smiley's enabled  :)

General Review Discussion / Review suggestions
« on: March 13, 2005, 10:55 PM »
Here are the categories we plan on reviewing next:

Best File/Folder Comparison Tool.
Best Web Change Monitor.

Please let us know what you think we should review next..  Once we get enough members we can use a weekly poll to decide what categories we should judge, that way members can get reviews that are most useful to them.

we could also investigate getting more reviewers to increase the quantity of reviews.

We are still working out the best way to add new developers to this site.

We are interested in authors with high quality software (ideally more than one program), who are willing to provide some degree of informal support to users through our forums.  the software cannot be shareware, ie it cannot have any limitations that are only available on purchase.

I think we have some good ideas that would be fair for everyone  in terms of ways to split incoming donations - one approach would be simply to let people who donate to DonationCoder.com decide how to divide their donations among developers; would require a little bit of work setting up but has some real advantages in terms of fairness and in terms of avoiding people feeling like they weren't getting their "fair share".

ps.
if you expect to make lots of money from having your programs here, then you're better off trying to sell your programs as shareware.  very little money comes into this site, and we are not about getting rich.  of all the people that use the programs I wrote here, very very few ever donate.  this is more about having a nice home for your software, and getting the occasional donation from somone who likes your work.
