ill start with one, and can add more later.
keep in mind the thumbnail/file list is a regular shell browser
so you can right click for shell context menu, or doubleclick, or drag files from there into other editors.

external editor will be configurable
(or do you mean you want to add 2 choices for yourself?)

question regarding hotkeys- are you running windows as admin or non-admin?

new version is up with some fixed (1.00.04).

i'm not sure what i should do about things like annotations on images and stuff..
there are a lot of good image editors and screenshot tools that do this.

i think what i would rather do is make it easy to launch a 3rd party tool to edit the images and annotate them.

and leave my tool really just for quickly capturing/saving/viewing.

ive gotten another report that capture not working..
its something to do with the prtscr hotkeys..  ill add custom hotkeys soon until i can figure out how to get prtscr keys working.

Screenshot Captor / Beta Testers For ScreenshotCaptor?
« on: May 13, 2005, 06:00 AM »
This is a VERY early beta, no help file to speak of.  But it does have and installer/uninstaller:

[link out of date]

its a screenshot taking app made to be used with minimal intervention from user.
(ie it auto saves files, etc.)

it's also designed to let you add comments into the screenshots, to be useful for taking visual notes.

it doesnt write to registry or make any system changes, so it's completely safe to test.

i wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't crash sometimes.

ideas, suggestions, bug reprts, all welcomed.

I have a new program i'm going to be adding soon..
a screenshot taking program.

yes, i know there are a lot of freeware ones already, but i thought i would make one especially designed for quickly taking screenshots for taking notes and stuff..

if anyone has any unique ideas for features to add to a screen capture util i'd love to hear to hear them.

i don't know of an official term, i just think of us as "software addicts" or "software junkies",
but softaholic is a hillarious term - i vote for that one.

So if you are a coder who wants to write some freeware for coding snacks, and would like people to donate to you if they appreciate your program, go register at paypal or amazon or whatever, and we will host your freeware and add the link so people can easily donate to show appreciation for your program.

well i have to admit, that you do make me realize that "hot tracking" in the widest sense of the word is sometimes good.
For example, i use the scroll wheel on mouse to scroll windows, and it is absolutely essential to efficient work that this scroll wheel work in the panel/window under the mouse without having to first tab into that panel/window to give it focues.

Living Room / Do you run a forum on your site?
« on: May 12, 2005, 01:10 PM »
Just making a post saying that I have been using an OpenSource automated sql database backup program that has been working quite well for us with this forum; it emails me backups of all the server databases once a day.

Direct link to db_backup: http://www.restkultu...f/scripts/db_backup/
(More links to software we use on this site on our Links page).

Living Room / Are you reading the blogs on our Link page?
« on: May 12, 2005, 12:50 PM »
Our links page has a nice collection of entertaining blogs about software and about programmers.

For example I enjoyed todays post on Coding Horror about "Dog Fooding": http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/

I was thinking, if you find something on the Links Page (https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html) that you like, maybe you could email the person running the page, let them know you like what they are doing, and mention that you came across their page through the DonationCoder.com Best Links Page?

Would be a nice way of letting them know that we appreciate what they are doing, and spreading the word about our site too.

Step-by-step Walkthrough on Adding a new Browser to BrowserTraySwitch:

1.   First, run BrowserTrayWwitch at least once, to let it generate its backup file and .ini configuration file.
2.   Now exit BrowserTraySwitch, by right clicking on it's system tray icon, and selecting "Exit".
3.   Start notepad.exe, windows built-in text editor. You should find notepad in your Start Menu, under Programs->Accessories or sometplace similar).
4.   Once notepad is running, choose File -> Open from the notepad menu.  The Open Dialog will appear.  In the Open dialog, browse to the BrowserTraySwitch directory, which will be at "C:\Program Files\BrowserTraySwitch\".
5.   Notepad only shows files ending in .txt by default, so once you are there, click the combo box at the bottom of the dialog that says "Files of type: Text Documents (*.txt)", and select "All Files".
6.   You should then see "BrowserTraySwitch.ini" in the Dialog (if not, did you remember to run the program and exit it at last once?) Select it and push the "Open" button to open it in Notepad.
7.   Notepad will load the .ini configuration file, which lists each configured browser on its own line.
8.   It's ok to have entries for browsers that you don't have installed, so there is no need to delete anything, just go to the end of the file, to a new blank line at the end.
9.   Now type the label you would like to use for the new browser, for example: Maxon or Super Browser or Opera.
10.   Then a space, then a | character (it should be above your enter key on your keyboard).
11.   Then you need to add the full path to this browser, enclosed in double quotes.  The easiest way to get this is to use your start menu.  Click the "Start" button on the bottom left of your Windows Desktop, and navigate to the main entry (the item that would launch the browser) for the broswer you want to add.  Then RIGHT-CLICK on the entry and select "Properties".
12.   You should see the Properties dialog and on the "Shortcut" tab, in the "Target:" box should be the full path of the browser executable.  Simply select the text in that box and hit Ctrl+C to copy it.  Then click "Cancel" to dismiss the Properties dialog without making any changes.
13.   Now return to Notepad and paste in the full path to the browser that you just copied to the clipbaord, by hitting ctrl+V.
14.   You're finally result should be a line at the end of the BrowserTraySwitch.ini file like this: Opera | "C:\Program Files\Opera\Opera.exe"
15.   Hit enter to give yourself a new blank line at the end of the file for next time, and then choose File ->Save from the notepad menu.
16.   Now you need to restart BrowserTraySwitch to have the changes take effect.  If it's running in your system tray (you can hover the mouse over icons in the system tray to identify it), then right click and select exit.  And then restart BrowserTraySwitch from your start menu.  Right click on it in system tray and you should see your new browser listed in the choices.  If not, then something went wrong and you should ask for help on the DonationCoder.com forums.

hot tracking is a horrible evil thing.
which makes me guess that microsoft invented it (or funded it , or rescued it from history's trash bin), like the wonderous ever-changing ever-hiding "smart" menus.

prove me wrong!

Find And Run Robot / Re: New Thought
« on: May 11, 2005, 11:56 AM »
this is just my own bias, almost every program i write there you can type a file or path, i support drag&drop from windows explorer.

so you can drag and drop onto those places.

but you are definitely right that a browse button should be added.

i'm sorry that i haven't updated f&r in a while, i promise that im going to devote some real time to it soon.

there are a lot of very nice free cpu usage monitoring systemt tray apps, maybe someone can recommend some that already exist.

but
i am thinking of adding options to Process Tamer to allow user to customize how the tray activity is displayed, so that you can specify customize icons to use for various cpu usage levels that the user can customize.  And then we could make some sets of icons colored as you are requesting, which i think would be nice.

ProcessTamer / Re: Processes running as IUSR_SERVER
« on: May 11, 2005, 02:19 AM »
yes, that is the critical question..
is there a way to run it as a service with uber permissions to modify all exes.
or does it have to run as a specific service tied to the target.

if the latter, then the only way i see to fix it is to make a little commandline helper util with same taming abilities, which the main process tamer could launch as a specific user, when targetting specific services. sounds a little involved unless this is something really needed.
