my apps are *supposed* to be smart enough to set the working directory to their own dir no matter how they are started, but i may have messed it up on this one, ill try to fix in next version so this isnt an issue.

can you check to see if its not just a really slow startup with the ini file?
give it 5 or 10 seconds - just so i know if its really a hang or a dif issue.

hi jarc,

it should be remembering its position and transparency.

can you do a test to help me figure out what is going wrong?

go to the desktopcoral directory and see if there is a DesktopCoral.ini file, and let me know if there is.
if there is, delete it.

then run DesktopCoral from that dir (ie double click), don't run from start menu.
dock it to some side of screen and set transparency to some level, and then exit it.

then restart it and see if it remembers position.
if not, see if it at least created the ini file
if it did save an ini file try this: repeat the procedure, dock to side of screen, set transparency, then exit, then open up the ini file in notepad and post its contents.

what i'm tryign to figure out is if maybe the problem is in saving its ini file. either due to permission problems or bug.

version 1.00.19 now up - jeffk can you test and see if it cures the problem?

37181
well it sounds like xplorer does precisely what fantum wanted.

37182
it sounds like keene knows the problems,
i was more interested in just the basic effect.

i thought it was going to be an annoying effect, but it was actually kinda nice to have all but active window dimmed..

37183
well there are a bunch of apps to monitor specific directories and do stuff when a file appears in them, either alert you or process name in some way.

but i read the question as being that fantum was browsing directories in explorer and wanted to know if folders were empty without navigating into them.

directory opus is nice about that.

tenseiken says xplorer^2 does it better than dir opus.. i didnt know that.  tenseiken how is it better?

Living Room / Review Day: Saturday -> Monday
« on: May 15, 2005, 02:30 AM »
ok, it was getting harder and harder to hit the saturday deadlines for reviews, given that the weekend is the best time to do the bulk of the work.  So i've changed it to Monday.

The aim will be to have reviews available monday morning.

I think it makes a little more sense and it's a little easier deadline as well.

1.00.18 now up.

known problem: png files do not store comments :(
all other file formats do.

not too much changed on outside of this version, but the internal mechanisms for detecting file changes outside of app are completely redone, hopefully will work better with external graphics editors now.

can those who were experiencing that access fault error on startup tell me if it still happens or if its fixed now?

just a warning - i might not get my review done until monday; been working too hard on screenshot captor.

guys i could use some more help here identifying useful features and comparing the programs..

37188
this isnt a direct answer to your question, but Directory Opus (a very expensive replacement for windows explorer), has a very nice feature that calculates folder contents sizes, and is wonderful for the kind of thing you are asking, allowing you to see at a glace what folders have stuff in them and how much..

there are some free file explorer replacements, maybe one of them has something similar?

thanks jef, i'll get it fixed, i just have to try to figure out a way to reproduce the bug here - you're not the only one getting this behavior.

new version up (won't help jeff's problem).
changes:
you can now set default image format to jpg, gif, png, tif (comments are saved in all now)
  compression slider
  sound is optional
statusbar now lists resolution and filesize of images as you view

i got another report of that, it seems to be related to the file browser component not being happy about something.

do you get the error each time you start the program, or is it all fixed now that it has created its ini file.

i will be adding a lossless file capture mode, i just have to figure out how to save comments inside it.

37195
sorry that was my fault..
there was 1 thread that was about the early idea of coding snacks that wandered off topic, and your request was in it, so i moved it to a temp area. ill move it back , for the sake of compelteness.

i will write your program at the next coding snacks if no one else does, it can be done in a few hours.

sound optional, ok i will add that tonight.
other formats, yes, i just have to figure out how to save the comments inside them.

ps. i already added a "Save As.." to file menu where you can save at any format and compression quality.

cool!

although as you say, it gets confused if new windows appear, i have to say, its quite cool, and in fact just using it for a second or two, you can see that it is a neat idea for a program, and maybe one worth taking the time to write in visual c++ for optimum speed.

i had real doubts about whether this would be anything but an annoying thing to use, but it's actually kind of a fun effect, that might be worth spending some time on.
