Found Deals and Discounts / READ IN: Posting in this Section
« on: May 17, 2005, 11:22 PM »
This section is for posts relating to deals/discounts found on the web.

So any kind of special offers or discounts relating to software are acceptable in that section (the offers should be at a minimum be computer related).

We will allow posts from people with a financial stake in the offer - but you must make clear your affiliation with the company.

And do not spam the section with repeated multiple posts.

And hey if you find a good (software) deal on the web, please post it - might be nice if this section turned into a useful resource!

NEW GUIDELINE MAY 13, 2011 : I think in order to better organize the found discounts section, and make it easier for people to find stuff long term, posters should try to post the the daily/weekly deal-site announcements either:
  • In a single thread for the giveaway site (giveaway of the day thread for example)
  • Or in a thread collecting all discounts past and future for a given product.

37152
We set up a child board of this section for posts relating to deals/discounts found on the web:

https://www.donation...index.php?board=39.0

I think it makes sense in terms of providing a specific place for such things; it will help people who are interested to have a single place to look, and it will also serve to keep the other sections of the board free from advertisements, etc.

So any kind of special offers or discounts relating to software are acceptable in that section (and only that section).

The offers should be computer related, and my previously stated position of allowing posts from people with a financial stake in the offer still stands - just state your affiliation and do not spam the section with multiple posts.

I encourage you to share any good (software) deals you find on the web in that section; I hope it will turn into a useful resource for all of us.  I think if we have some good deal-finders that post regularly to it, it will be a nice addition to the fourm.

In keeping with the spirit of the site, i encourage our respected members to comment on the deals if they think they are not worth it, or if they think there is something people should know, etc. (but please be respectful); some editorial comment on the offers would be helpful.

And a bit of warning with regard to all discounts and deals you run across on the web.  Don't just jump on some offer as a spur-of-the-moment thing.  Many an ebay bid has been regretted by someone who pushed the "bid" button in the heat of the moment, and came to regret it in the morning.

we also forgot to include the company's name in the product name.

"EvilCore's MailZillaGator!.NET XP 2000 Pro"

(why are so many of these evil conventions used by microsoft?)

has MS ever use a ! yet in one of their program names yet?

one of the very rare occasions i disagree with jibz..
i'm not a heavy user of download managers.. but i have used mass downloader in the past and quite liked it, and can see the real use for it sometimes, when downloading bunches of slow files.

37155
i am a big fan of pine too for commandline *nix use.

37156
thats useful feedback.

i tried foxmail+mulberry and i've updated the review with my impressions and some screenshots.

note that whenever a review has a non-trivial update, you will see a list of links to the dated changes in the upper left of the review sidebar,
and the archive page (https://www.donation...s/Archive/index.html) will have the date-of-last update changed.  That's our way of trying to minimize the confusion that comes with modifying an already public review, and an acknowledgement that such modifcations/additions are just unavoidable given our approach.

37157
i'm not nearly as sensitive about such posts as many forums i've seen.

i think it's important that when people make posts about special offers, etc., they state clearly if they have a financial interest, which you did.

so i have no problem with it at all, please everyone feel free to make such posts, just state clearly whether you are affiliated with or benefiting from sales.

and i don't really mind people posting such offers if they are financially involved, as long as they so state, and don't post repeatedly.  one post about an offer/program is fine with me and I won't consider it spam.  :)

ok, new version up without the code to check for another running copy -
tenseiken would you mind testing this version and see if it helps?

(no need for jeffk test on this one).

you know, the program does have code to prevent it from opening multiple copies - perhaps that is getting confused;
let me upload a version with that turned off, and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

jibz you are losing your touch, you forgot to add the year into the program name, perhaps the most inegeniusly bad of all the naming conventions:

MailZillaGator!.NET XP 2000 Pro

well i don't hold much help of this latest version fixing it but it's worth a try.

jeffk, this version may bring back your crashing bug so please try as well if you dont mind.

would it be easier for you guys if i just uploaded the main app exe? or do you prefer the setup program?

[link out of date]

once i get this bug fixes i can start polishing the program.

btw - i did use this program for the email review, and it did help me :)

Living Room / Re: Review Day: Saturday -> Monday
« on: May 17, 2005, 05:08 AM »
i do like the idea of having the initial easy part of the review up for an entire week where members could make suggestions and comments and help shape the review..

part 1 would be basically writing the skeleton part of the review.  the intro, and describing the set of programs up for consideration, and features of interest.  then we could essentially fill in the details and comments about the various apps..
then on the 2nd weekend the reviewer will make a final decision about which app is best and move that one to forefront of review, and leave the rest of the descriptions of the alternate programs.  this should also increase the size and completeness of the "alternative programs" section, which i think everyone likes.  i'm guessing this approach will shift the reviews to be a little less focused on describing the single best app, and a little more focused on the range of apps and features, while still clearly picking one program and describing why it was chosen as best.

this approach would also let people on the forum contribute content to the descriptions of various alternative programs, making it more of a group effort.

for example, let's say we do file explorer replacements next time (another hairy review, ugh).  then the idea would be that the first week would be posted an overview of the topic and a table of alternative programs with some screenshots, etc.  then in the course of the week, people could post their descriptions of the alternative programs they favor and why, and features they like, etc.

these comments could be collected and worked into the review over the course of the week, culminating in a decision about the final best program, and a more elaboarte description of its features and why the reviewer believes they are better.

i'm a little worried that its going to ruin the suspense though and make the reviews something that the participating members don't much care to read in the end since they've seen it coming for the last 2 weeks... not sure..

another potential monkey wrench: i want to reserve some weekends for coding snacks also..

so maybe weekend schedules would be like
Review part 1
Review part 2
Coding snacks
Review part 1
Review part 2
Coding snacks

or we could do
Review Part 1
Coding Snacks
Review Part 2
Review Part 1
Coding Snacks
Review Part 2

or we could do
Review Part 1
Coding Snacks
Review Part 2
something related to coding
Review Part 1
Coding Snacks
Review Part 2
something related to coding

zaine, the new avatar is great, but i loved the trailer one; it reminded me of some maxfield parish landscape paintings.  i hope you will rotate the old one back every once and a while.

here's another idea that is sort of a combination of various ideas rolled up into one:

we could make all reviews like 2 part (2 week things),

where the first week would be a sort of short intro to the category and maybe a capsule overview and first impressions of
various programs, and then a week later the final conclusion award/review.

and in that week period, we could talk about issues and update the first part regularly as our discussions unfold,
leading finally to the conclusion review and award.

that approach might also help out in terms of having the review develop over the course of the week allowing us to get better feedback in the process.

General Review Discussion / Re: A suggestion for reviews
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:54 PM »
well, one weekend a month is now being devoted to coding snacks, so that makes 3 review per month currently.
ideally id let to set up a bunch of people who can do reviews, so that each person is only working on 1 per month or so, that would help immensely.  otherwise we may indeed slow down the pace of reviews, and do some other stuff every week.

i like the idea of something new weekly.
so we could entertain other possibilities,
like
one weekend per month a full detailed award review like we are currently doing.
one weekend per month a coding snacks weekend.
one weekend per month a group forum review, where we pick a program or category and then a bunch of use do our own evaluation and discussion of what we like best.
one weekend per month .. ?

ideas welcomed.

thanks edvard.

do you happen to know a good very newbie introduction to these replacement shell type things and what they are good for etc., i have to admit i am totally ignorant of them.

yes
this is a very good idea and one i intended on doing for this email review, as we knew it was going to be needing some modifications, as all the reviews have so far.

and having an early link for members to comment on is the perfect solution.
it's just really hard to get these reviews done on deadline, and i slipped this time because i spend most of the last week working on my new Screenshot Captor program.

i think it's definitely a good idea we should make standard practice, maybe idea would be have review up sunday afternoon, with private comments through to monday and then live public on monday?  ideally it would be up long before then but in reality its just hard to get these things written too far ahead of time due to real life obligations.

scott,

I went back and gave PocoMail another look and I've updated the review to indicate that in fact the way pocomail handles folders vs. accounts is a very nice idea.  Jibz and I were talking about how Becky! tries to do something similar but in a rougher way, and i completely overlooked that in fact PocoMail was doing this in a nice way.

Best E-mail Client / Re: The Bat! PGP Support
« on: May 16, 2005, 04:22 PM »
The home edition supports PGP.
my understanding is that message base encryptions refers to storing your files (address book, mail contents) in an encrypted form on your hard disk, which would be useful for example if you used a shared computer on an episodic basis.

i added a little to the review discussing pro vs. home.

im finishing up the review now.
no it doesnt address webmail clients;
i have a personal bias against such things, and most web-related apps.
i like to have data and app on my computer, not floating around in the ethers.

i think these bugs are all related to the same problem,
they sound like a problem i thought i had fixed, with the program getting confused about the directory it is in,
i just wish i knew a way to reproduce it.  any think strange about your directory structure that might cause the problem?

question, if you try browsing arround using the .. entry
ie just navigate around directories and dont try capturing antyhing
and see if the program confuses itself and gets lost, etc.

37172
i have to say i love what chr has done, and it's exactly the app i've been wanting.
it should be up on the coding snacks download page this week.

how strange...
so if you delete the ini then it runs, but after you exit and restart, it hangs (without even showing icon), is that right?
but the other versions did work..

really strange. i will try to fix.
if you have some time it might be nice for you to play with the .ini file a bit and see if changing anything or deleting an entry fixes it.
in particular, try changing the FolderPathEdit.Text entry or deleting it.

great to hear that that is fixed, though it created this startup delay.

im going to try one more fix compromise and see if that solves it..
