Living Room / Review Day: Saturday -> Monday
« on: May 15, 2005, 02:30 AM »
ok, it was getting harder and harder to hit the saturday deadlines for reviews, given that the weekend is the best time to do the bulk of the work.  So i've changed it to Monday.

The aim will be to have reviews available monday morning.

I think it makes a little more sense and it's a little easier deadline as well.

Screenshot Captor / Beta Testers For ScreenshotCaptor?
« on: May 13, 2005, 06:00 AM »
This is a VERY early beta, no help file to speak of.  But it does have and installer/uninstaller:

[link out of date]

its a screenshot taking app made to be used with minimal intervention from user.
(ie it auto saves files, etc.)

it's also designed to let you add comments into the screenshots, to be useful for taking visual notes.

it doesnt write to registry or make any system changes, so it's completely safe to test.

i wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't crash sometimes.

ideas, suggestions, bug reprts, all welcomed.

Living Room / Do you run a forum on your site?
« on: May 12, 2005, 01:10 PM »
Just making a post saying that I have been using an OpenSource automated sql database backup program that has been working quite well for us with this forum; it emails me backups of all the server databases once a day.

Direct link to db_backup: http://www.restkultu...f/scripts/db_backup/
(More links to software we use on this site on our Links page).

Living Room / Are you reading the blogs on our Link page?
« on: May 12, 2005, 12:50 PM »
Our links page has a nice collection of entertaining blogs about software and about programmers.

For example I enjoyed todays post on Coding Horror about "Dog Fooding": http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/

I was thinking, if you find something on the Links Page (https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html) that you like, maybe you could email the person running the page, let them know you like what they are doing, and mention that you came across their page through the DonationCoder.com Best Links Page?

Would be a nice way of letting them know that we appreciate what they are doing, and spreading the word about our site too.

Step-by-step Walkthrough on Adding a new Browser to BrowserTraySwitch:

1.   First, run BrowserTrayWwitch at least once, to let it generate its backup file and .ini configuration file.
2.   Now exit BrowserTraySwitch, by right clicking on it's system tray icon, and selecting "Exit".
3.   Start notepad.exe, windows built-in text editor. You should find notepad in your Start Menu, under Programs->Accessories or sometplace similar).
4.   Once notepad is running, choose File -> Open from the notepad menu.  The Open Dialog will appear.  In the Open dialog, browse to the BrowserTraySwitch directory, which will be at "C:\Program Files\BrowserTraySwitch\".
5.   Notepad only shows files ending in .txt by default, so once you are there, click the combo box at the bottom of the dialog that says "Files of type: Text Documents (*.txt)", and select "All Files".
6.   You should then see "BrowserTraySwitch.ini" in the Dialog (if not, did you remember to run the program and exit it at last once?) Select it and push the "Open" button to open it in Notepad.
7.   Notepad will load the .ini configuration file, which lists each configured browser on its own line.
8.   It's ok to have entries for browsers that you don't have installed, so there is no need to delete anything, just go to the end of the file, to a new blank line at the end.
9.   Now type the label you would like to use for the new browser, for example: Maxon or Super Browser or Opera.
10.   Then a space, then a | character (it should be above your enter key on your keyboard).
11.   Then you need to add the full path to this browser, enclosed in double quotes.  The easiest way to get this is to use your start menu.  Click the "Start" button on the bottom left of your Windows Desktop, and navigate to the main entry (the item that would launch the browser) for the broswer you want to add.  Then RIGHT-CLICK on the entry and select "Properties".
12.   You should see the Properties dialog and on the "Shortcut" tab, in the "Target:" box should be the full path of the browser executable.  Simply select the text in that box and hit Ctrl+C to copy it.  Then click "Cancel" to dismiss the Properties dialog without making any changes.
13.   Now return to Notepad and paste in the full path to the browser that you just copied to the clipbaord, by hitting ctrl+V.
14.   You're finally result should be a line at the end of the BrowserTraySwitch.ini file like this: Opera | "C:\Program Files\Opera\Opera.exe"
15.   Hit enter to give yourself a new blank line at the end of the file for next time, and then choose File ->Save from the notepad menu.
16.   Now you need to restart BrowserTraySwitch to have the changes take effect.  If it's running in your system tray (you can hover the mouse over icons in the system tray to identify it), then right click and select exit.  And then restart BrowserTraySwitch from your start menu.  Right click on it in system tray and you should see your new browser listed in the choices.  If not, then something went wrong and you should ask for help on the DonationCoder.com forums.

Best E-mail Client / ASRT 5/14/05 - EMAIL CLIENT
« on: May 09, 2005, 01:17 PM »
Well..

I have to tell you that this one scares me a bit, but i'm thinking we should do email clients next week.

I know this one is bound to be controversial, and I'm not looking forward to it, but it seems like something that would be useful.

I could really use some help with this one, in identifying features and requirements to look at.

Let me give you my personal bias; i would really appreciate counter-arguments and as much detailed opinion and facts from people who have some experience with different email clients.

I have been using TheBat for many years now, and i'm a real fan. I have found their beta releases to be quite buggy, but the final versions have been wonderfully reliable.  I've never lost a single email, and i have over 60,000 emails dating back to 1996 which thebat handles perfectly (very nice import function).  I also really love the way it handles multiple accounts, which i have lots of.

As i see it, the two main competitors to the bat are Outlook (express) and the new thunderbird, which has tons of fans.

Thunderbird is sure to win excellence in open source no matter what, its incredible how substantial its become in such a short time.

But i have very little experience with thunderbird and outlook (+outlook express), and i really really could use some help from people who use these seriously and know the feature set, especially people who have used these and thebat.

as much help as you can give in terms of discussing issues, etc, would be welcome.

No matter what, this is bound to be a controversial review - people have strong attachments to their email clients, especially since they are used throughout the day by most people.

So, regardless of which program ultimately wins the best-in-class award, we will want to do justice to the others and properly talk about their advantages and disadvantages.

If someone has experience with all of these programs and would be willing to write a lengthy advocacy of one of these programs, i think this would be a good time to include such opinions in the review itself.  but only if you've seriously checked out more than one of these clients or switched from one to the other, and feel qualified to speak on why you switched, etc.

I'd also appreciate links to other reviews so we can see what aspects people liked/didnt like. and lists of features which are important to you.

i could really use your help on this review, so please give me as much info/details as you can.

and it has a long roundup of recommended software (2005 Utility Guide).

Living Room / Guide To ... (an idea)
« on: May 06, 2005, 08:02 AM »
If some of our memebrs had any interest in writing some long "how to" guides, i'd be delighted to set up a special section for them and provide web hosting, etc.

ie like "Guide To Setting Up Your Own Web Server", etc.  anything to do with software.

there's no point in us reproducing what already exists, so we'd only want to make a how to do something if it was a better guide than could be found elsewhere, so we'd only want really comprehensive friendly guides with lots of pictures, etc.  kind of a tall order, but let me know if you are interested.

another alternative would be just a page or section of the forum where we could collect links to the Best offsite How To Guides relating to software...

3768
i think this is something that can be implemented in coding snacks if it doesnt already exist.

a tray based tool that shows you all your printers in a menu and lets you change new default printer.

shareware to do this:
http://www.southbayp....com/PrinterExpress/

so my question is, is there a freeware to do this already? if not i'll write it.

3769
i'd love to see someone come up with a game that can be programmed in a day.
Especially one which made use of external data files that could be written by users. A good example of this would be a trivia game, or hangman, where the core game engine is simple, and other users can make data files containing trivia questions or hangman words+phrases.

I'd love to have some suggestions for some new creative ideas for a fun game that had a very simple engine but could be greatly expanded by user-written data files.

General Software Discussion / PngOut.dll + PngOut.exe
« on: May 01, 2005, 03:34 PM »
an awesome png output compressor (available as standalone exe or dll for irfanview 3.97) is out:
http://advsys.net/ken/utils.htm

takes some time to run but does a fantastic job of creating small full color png files.

(note you could use drag&drop robot to do batch processing with the commandline pngout.exe).

3774
i was thinking of like a little tray tool or else a window on top,
and you are supposed to click it once per hour, on the hour.
and it would assign you a score based on how far off you are.

so after each hour you would get some points:
maybe like score+= 1800-Offset (in seconds).

so if you ran it for 24 hours and always hit the timer exactly, you would have 24 * (1800-0) points (43200 points)
if you ran it for 24 hours and were 30 minutes late on average, you would have 24 * (1800-1800) points (0 points)
if you ran it for 24 hours and were 40 minutes late on average, you would have 24 * (1800-2400) pointe (-14400 points)

further more, each time you shut it down it should take away 50000 points, just for spite.

we could call it SPITEFUL TIMER.

plus as an extra feature, if you are LATE it should make a scary sound, to encourage you.

if you leave it running for 24 hours in a row you get a bonus 100,000 points.
If you are within 1 second, a bonus 50.000.
